  • ubuntu not detecting CDdrives

    - by Mirage
Ihave insatlled ubuntu 10.4 on my compuer with 6 cd drives. Now initiallyi had window server 2008 and i had to install marvel raid sata controller and then my window detected all 6 drives. Now ubuntu is detecting only 3 drives and i have not found marvell drivers for ubuntu bt i have drives for window 2008. Now my question is if i have vrtual machine inside ubuntu using vmware workstation and i install that driver. then can VM dtect thse 6 drives or host has to detect those drives first to make VMs use that Ubuntu shows this thing from terminal *-cdrom:0 description: DVD-RAM writer product: DVDRAM GSA-H10N vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 0.0.0 bus info: scsi@0:0.0.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom2 logical name: /dev/cdrw2 logical name: /dev/dvd2 logical name: /dev/dvdrw2 logical name: /dev/scd0 logical name: /dev/sr0 version: JL10 capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc *-cdrom:1 description: DVD writer product: DVDRRW GWA-4164B vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 0.1.0 bus info: scsi@0:0.1.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom logical name: /dev/cdrw logical name: /dev/dvd logical name: /dev/dvdrw logical name: /dev/scd1 logical name: /dev/sr1 version: 1.01 serial: [HL-DT-STDVDRRW GWA-4164B1.0105/05/12 capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc Is t detecting all drives or thise local names just same

  • Decyphering Seagate drive model numbers?

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
I'm comparing Seagate's Enterprise and Desktop drives for a variety of old and new servers. These servers come from different generations, so options like size (73GB, 2TB) and interface (SATA vs SAS 3.0Gbps vs SAS 6Gbps vs SCSI Ultra320) are widely variable. I'm trying to compare the sizes, speeds and interfaces, but I'm getting thrown off by different models. Also, their website is not the best. Does anyone know of a documented explanation of the Seagate model numbers? And is there a single spreadsheet which compares the features for all drives (or all 'Enterprise' drives?). Seagate drives have model numbers like this: Model ST3600057SS 6-Gb/s SAS 600 GB None at Cheetah® 15K Hard Drives Model ST373455LW Ultra320 SCSI 73.4 GB 68-Pin LW at Cheetah® 15K Hard Drives Model ST32000644NS SATA 3Gb/s 2 TB None at Constellation™ ES Hard Drives Model ST973452SS 6-Gb/s SAS 73 GB None Savvio® 15K Hard Drives Model ST9200011FS SATA 3Gb/s 200 GB Pulsar™ Solid State Drives I understand the model numbers read something like this: ST - SOMETHING1 - SIZE - SOMETHING2 - INTERFACE Where the fields mean something like this: ST : For 'Seagate'? 'Seagate Technoligies'? SOMETHING1 - This field has number, but I'm not sure what that represents. SIZE - Size in Gigabytes. This is a number like '73' or '300' or '2000' SOMETHING2 - This field also has a number, but I'm not sure what it means. INTERFACE - This field seems to indicate the Interface. 'SS' means SAS, 'FC' means Fibre Channel, but I don't see how to distinguish between 6Gbps SAS and 3Gbps SAS, or different SATA or FC speeds. I don't see a field which indicates the RPM (15K , 10K, 7.2K) etc. Is this part of the model number?

  • No clue for high load average on top

    - by Oz.
We have several machines on Amazon (ec2) of the type c1.xlarge with 16 cpus, running the Amazon AMI. Details on the machine: 7 GB of memory 20 EC2 Compute Units (8 virtual cores with 2.5 EC2 Compute Units each) 1690 GB of instance storage 64-bit platform I/O Performance: High API name: c1.xlarge One out of the several machines is showing a high load average, since we have run the last yum upgrade a couple of weeks a go. We did not yet update the other machines, and everything looks normal on them. The strange thing is that the top command not showing any hint for the cause of the load. CPUs are 4.8%us, 1.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 94.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st(see below). Mem is about 1.5GB free. Any idea what could it be, or where else can we check? • load average in top and procs in vmstat

    - by Mingfei.hua
    As far as I know, the load average in top is the numbers of precess(threads) in running or uninterrupted sleep status, So it should be equal to (procs-r +1 )+ procs-b in vmstat, but in practice, this two number always have big gap. Any wrongs in my understanding, appreciate so much if some guys give me some guide. top - 05:34:50 up 1 day, 20:56, 5 users, load average: 2.83, 2.67, 1.62 Tasks: 79 total, 1 running, 78 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 6.8%us, 1.8%sy, 0.0%ni, 91.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.4%st Mem: 1758000k total, 582636k used, 1175364k free, 103932k buffers Swap: 917500k total, 0k used, 917500k free, 180868k cached procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu----- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st 0 0 0 1182524 103784 180860 0 0 1 9 6 53 7 2 91 0 0 0 0 0 1182524 103784 180860 0 0 0 36 70 117 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182516 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 73 132 0 1 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182516 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 60 127 0 0 100 0 0 1 0 0 1182516 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 62 102 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182628 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 289 238 1 2 97 0 0 2 0 0 1152160 103784 180892 0 0 0 8 1481 2371 54 12 34 0 0 1 0 0 1182192 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 681 834 19 4 78 0 0 0 0 0 1182200 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 80 147 0 1 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182200 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 53 107 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182208 103788 180856 0 0 0 72 64 123 0 0 100 1 0

  • MySQL query, 2 similar servers, 2 minute difference in execution times

    - by mr12086
I had a similar question on stack overflow, but it seems to be more server/mysql setup related than coding. The queries below all execute instantly on our development server where as they can take upto 2 minutes 20 seconds. The query execution time seems to be affected by home ambiguous the LIKE string's are. If they closely match a country that has few matches it will take less time, and if you use something like 'ge' for germany - it will take longer to execute. But this doesn't always work out like that, at times its quite erratic. Sending data appears to be the culprit but why and what does that mean. Also memory on production looks to be quite low (free memory)? • Outlook Signature Broken in Entourage

    - by Eric J.
Some of our company uses Windows with Outlook 2010, and the rest use Mac with Entourage. When our standard signature line is included in an email that goes to Entourage, the result does not display correctly. It appears that Entourage is mangling the HTML. My working theory is that Entourage encounters inline CSS styles it does not know about and stops processing styles, but I'm really not sure. Question: How can I enter a signature into Outlook 2010 that will render correctly in Entourage? For example, can I specify somehow the exact HTML to use? Here's an example of how the HTML is being changed. Original on Outlook, as received by another Outlook client: <span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"; color:#1785C5'>My Company<br> </span></b><span class=apple-style-span><span style='font-size:9.0pt; font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif";color:#666666'>123 Main St.</span></span><span class=apple-style-span><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"; color:#AFAFAF'>&nbsp;</span></span><span class=apple-style-span><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif";color:#666666'>Suite 100</span></span> Note the use of spans, color #1785C5 and color #666666. Same original email, as displayed in an Entourage client: <span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><br> <span style='color:#656565'>My Company<br> 123 Main St Suite 100<br> </span> Note the use of br tags rather than spans, and the color #656565.

  • wget crawling search results of news website

    - by kiltek
I am trying to crawl the search results of a news website using wget. The name of the website is www.voanews.com. After typing in my search keyword and clicking search, it proceeds to the results. Then i can specify a "to" and a "from"-date and hit search again. After this the URL becomes: http://www.voanews.com/search/?st=article&k=mykeyword&df=10%2F01%2F2013&dt=09%2F20%2F2013&ob=dt#article and the actual content of the results is what i want to download. To achieve this I created the following wget-command: wget --reject=js,txt,gif,jpeg,jpg \ --accept=html \ --user-agent=My-Browser \ --recursive --level=2 \ www.voanews.com/search/?st=article&k=germany&df=08%2F21%2F2013&dt=09%2F20%2F2013&ob=dt#article Unfortunately, the crawler doesn't download the search results. It only gets into the upper link bar, which contains the "Home,USA,Africa,Asia,..." links and saves the articles they link to. It seems like he crawler doesn't check the search result links at all. What am I doing wrong and how can I modify the wget command to download the results search list links (and of course the sites they link to) only ?

I know I could grep through the hex dump of the conversation, but I was hoping for something a little more elegant. I would prefer Linux tools, but Windows (or other) would be fine. This question is motivated by the security testing I do for PCI and general penetration testing. Update: GregS points out below that the SSL server picks from the cipher suites of the client. So it seems I would need to test all cipher suites one at a time. I think I can hack something together, but is there a tool that does particularly this?

  • Redirecting or routing all traffic to OpenVPN on a Mac OS X client

    - by sdr56p
I have configured an OpenVPN (2.2.1) server on an Ubuntu virtual machine in the Amazon elastic compute cloud. The server is up and running. I have installed OpenVPN (2.2.1) on a Mac OS X (10.8.2) client and I am using the openvpn2 binary to connect (in opposition to other clients like Tunnelblick or Viscosity). I can connect with the client and successfully ping or ssh the server through the tunnel. However, I can't redirect all internet traffic through the VPN even if I use the push "redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp" option in the server.conf configurations. When I connect to the server with these configurations, I get a successful connection, but then an infinite series of error messages: "write UDPv4: No route to host (code=65)". Traffic routing seems to be compromised because I am not able to access anything anymore, not even the OpenVPN server (by pinging 10.8.0.1 for instance). This is beyond me. I am finding little help on the web and don't know what to try next. I don't think it is a problem of forwarding the traffic on the server since, first, I have also took care of that and, second, I can't even ping the VPN server locally through the tunnel (or ping anything at all for that matter). Thank you for your help. • How to find out which process is hogging the linux server?

    - by user1149518
We have a RHEL server. Today it suddenly became slow. Symptoms - It was responding slow to ping queries from other server. When I try to login using ssh, it was taking about 10 seconds to login. I was able to resolve the problem by doing some guess work. I killed one process which I thought was culprit. Which resolved the problem. Though I would like to know what's proper approach to detect the culprit in such kind of "slow server" situations. Le me know proper way to resolving such slowness issues and decting the process causing the slowness. These were the conditions when the server was slow - # vmstat 3 3 procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu------ r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st 1 1 176 6730868 285052 4899676 0 0 3 4 0 0 1 1 97 1 0 0 0 176 6751576 285064 4899704 0 0 0 115 15307 37171 1 1 96 3 0 0 0 176 6751948 285068 4899700 0 0 0 23 14813 39559 1 1 98 1 0 # top top - 16:38:18 up 150 days, 19:36, 64 users, load average: 1.68, 1.46, 1.44 Tasks: 1287 total, 2 running, 1284 sleeping, 1 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 1.3%us, 1.7%sy, 0.1%ni, 95.9%id, 0.7%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st Mem: 16620824k total, 9867124k used, 6753700k free, 287424k buffers Swap: 8193140k total, 176k used, 8192964k free, 4898996k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 26258 khk 34 19 130m 47m 7088 S 11.2 0.3 385:32.42 edm Though I would like to know what's proper approach to detect the culprit in such kind of "slow server" situations. • The Clocks on USACO

    - by philip
    I submitted my code for a question on USACO titled "The Clocks". This is the link to the question: http://ace.delos.com/usacoprob2?a=wj7UqN4l7zk&S=clocks This is the output: Compiling... Compile: OK Executing... Test 1: TEST OK [0.173 secs, 13928 KB] Test 2: TEST OK [0.130 secs, 13928 KB] Test 3: TEST OK [0.583 secs, 13928 KB] Test 4: TEST OK [0.965 secs, 13928 KB] Run 5: Execution error: Your program (`clocks') used more than the allotted runtime of 1 seconds (it ended or was stopped at 1.584 seconds) when presented with test case 5. It used 13928 KB of memory. ------ Data for Run 5 ------ 6 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 ---------------------------- Your program printed data to stdout. Here is the data: ------------------- time:_0.40928452 ------------------- Test 5: RUNTIME 1.5841 (13928 KB) I wrote my program so that it will print out the time taken (in seconds) for the program to complete before it exits. As can be seen, it took 0.40928452 seconds before exiting. So how the heck did the runtime end up to be 1.584 seconds? What should I do about it? This is the code if it helps: import java.io.; import java.util.; class clocks { public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { long start = System.nanoTime(); // Use BufferedReader rather than RandomAccessFile; it's much faster BufferedReader f = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("clocks.in")); // input file name goes above PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("clocks.out"))); // Use StringTokenizer vs. readLine/split -- lots faster int[] clock = new int[9]; for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++) { StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(f.readLine()); // Get line, break into tokens clock[i * 3] = Integer.parseInt(st.nextToken()); clock[i * 3 + 1] = Integer.parseInt(st.nextToken()); clock[i * 3 + 2] = Integer.parseInt(st.nextToken()); } ArrayList validCombination = new ArrayList();; for (int i = 1; true; i++) { ArrayList combination = getPossibleCombinations(i); for (int j = 0; j < combination.size(); j++) { if (tryCombination(clock, (int[]) combination.get(j))) { validCombination.add(combination.get(j)); } } if (validCombination.size() > 0) { break; } } int [] min = (int[])validCombination.get(0); if (validCombination.size() > 1){ String minS = ""; for (int i=0; i<min.length; i++) minS += min[i]; for (int i=1; i<validCombination.size(); i++){ String tempS = ""; int [] temp = (int[])validCombination.get(i); for (int j=0; j<temp.length; j++) tempS += temp[j]; if (tempS.compareTo(minS) < 0){ minS = tempS; min = temp; } } } for (int i=0; i<min.length-1; i++) out.print(min[i] + " "); out.println(min[min.length-1]); out.close(); // close the output file long end = System.nanoTime(); System.out.println("time: " + (end-start)/1000000000.0); System.exit(0); // don't omit this! } static boolean tryCombination(int[] clock, int[] steps) { int[] temp = Arrays.copyOf(clock, clock.length); for (int i = 0; i < steps.length; i++) transform(temp, steps[i]); for (int i=0; i<temp.length; i++) if (temp[i] != 12) return false; return true; } static void transform(int[] clock, int n) { if (n == 1) { int[] clocksToChange = {0, 1, 3, 4}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 2) { int[] clocksToChange = {0, 1, 2}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 3) { int[] clocksToChange = {1, 2, 4, 5}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 4) { int[] clocksToChange = {0, 3, 6}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 5) { int[] clocksToChange = {1, 3, 4, 5, 7}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 6) { int[] clocksToChange = {2, 5, 8}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 7) { int[] clocksToChange = {3, 4, 6, 7}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 8) { int[] clocksToChange = {6, 7, 8}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } else if (n == 9) { int[] clocksToChange = {4, 5, 7, 8}; add3(clock, clocksToChange); } } static void add3(int[] clock, int[] position) { for (int i = 0; i < position.length; i++) { if (clock[position[i]] != 12) { clock[position[i]] += 3; } else { clock[position[i]] = 3; } } } static ArrayList getPossibleCombinations(int size) { ArrayList l = new ArrayList(); int[] current = new int[size]; for (int i = 0; i < current.length; i++) { current[i] = 1; } int[] end = new int[size]; for (int i = 0; i < end.length; i++) { end[i] = 9; } l.add(Arrays.copyOf(current, size)); while (!Arrays.equals(current, end)) { incrementWithoutRepetition(current, current.length - 1); l.add(Arrays.copyOf(current, size)); } int [][] combination = new int[l.size()][size]; for (int i=0; i<l.size(); i++) combination[i] = (int[])l.get(i); return l; } static int incrementWithoutRepetition(int[] n, int index) { if (n[index] != 9) { n[index]++; return n[index]; } else { n[index] = incrementWithoutRepetition(n, index - 1); return n[index]; } } static void p(int[] n) { for (int i = 0; i < n.length; i++) { System.out.print(n[i] + " "); } System.out.println(""); } }

  • Personal | Going For A Long Drive

    - by Jeff Julian
This weekend, we were planning on going to Mt. Rushmore, but with the weather the way it is, we decided to head south instead. So what are we going to do? A tour of different restaurants on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Not very original I know since there are web sites and iPhone apps dedicated to locating the establishments, but it definitely sounds like it could be some fun. We are going to leave KC tonight and go through St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and back to KC. The kiddos are excited and we have plenty of movies, coloring books, etc in the car for the trip. This will be the first time we will get to use our turn around seats in the mini-van with our pull out table. I will have my laptop and phone if anything goes wrong with the site while I am gone and John will be back in KC as well. I hope to pushing some photos and reviews of the restaurants as we travel. • Sign-On für APEX Anwendungen mit Kerberos

    - by Carsten Czarski
