The problem I have is that at one point the program reads two different values and returns the first one twice. • Why does std::cout convert volatile pointers to bool?

  If you try to cout a volatile pointer, even a volatile char pointer where you would normally expect cout to print the string, you will instead simply get '1' (assuming the pointer is not null I think). I assume output stream operator<< is template specialized for volatile pointers, but my question is, why? What use case motivates this behavior?   Its great when you can return a null/empty object in most cases to avoid nulls, but what about Collection like objects? In Java, Map returns null if key in get(key) is not found in the map. The best way I can think of to avoid nulls in this situation is to return an Entry<T> object, which is either the EmptyEntry<T>, or contains the value T. Sure we avoid the null, but now you can have a class cast exception if you don't check if its an EmptyEntry<T>. Is there a better way to avoid nulls in Map's get(K)? And for argument sake, let's say this language don't even have null, so don't say just use nulls.

  I'm working on a codebase ported from Objective C to Java. There are several usages of method chaining without nullchecks dog.collar().tag().name() I was looking for something similar to safe-dereferencing operator ?. in Groovy instead of having nullchecks dog.collar?.tag?.name This led to Maybe monad to have the notion of Nothing instead of Null. But all the implementations of Nothing i came across throw exception when value is accessed which still doesn't solve the chaining problem. I made Nothing return a mock, which behaves like NullObject pattern. But it solves the chaining problem. Is there anything wrong with this implementation of Nothing? [http://github.com/sathish316/jsafederef/blob/master/src/s2k/util/safederef/Nothing.java] As far as i can see 1. It feels odd to use mocking library in code 2. It doesn't stop at the first null. 3. • How can I match a match a null byte (0x00) in the Visual Studio binary editor with a find using a re

  Open a file in the Visual Studio binary editor that contains a null byte (0x00), then use the Quick Find feature (Ctrl +F) to find null bytes. I would have thought I could use a regular expression such as \x00 to match null bytes but it doesn't work. Searching for any other hex value using this method works fine. Is this a VS bug, 'feature', or am I just missing something? Is there a work around?

So, I tried this. if (!myString.eqauls("")) { doSomething } and this if (!myString.eqauls(null)) { doSomething } and this if ( (!myString.eqauls("")) && (!myString.eqauls(null))) { doSomething } and this if ( (!myString.eqauls("")) && (myString!=null)) { doSomething } and this if ( myString.length()>0) { doSomething } And in all cases my program doSomething in spite on the fact that my string IS EMPTY. It equals to null. So, what is wrong with that?

• Using "null" in jQuery functions. Is this okay?

  My database consists of some entries which are NULL (so they don't affect max, min, etc..). When I pull all of the data from the database, I need to repopulate form fields with the values. Using .val(value) where value = NULL seems to work without any problems, but I'm not sure if this is a valid way to go about this. It doesn't say anything in the jQuery documentation (that I can find) about using NULL as parameters to functions.

• Preventing Users/Groups from accessing certain Domains

  I have created a Study account which I use when doing anything school related work. It's purpose is to remove the distractions of my normal account, such as social media and news websites. I know /etc/hosts can be edited to block certain domains from being accessed, but this is for all Users, and I don't want to have to switch in and out of Admin to change it every time I want to focus. Is there any way to block these domains for specific Users or Groups?

• How can I back up my ubuntu system?

  I'm sure there's a lot of questions on here similar to this, and I've been reading them, but I still feel this warrants a new question. I want nightly, incremental backups (full disk images would waste a lot of space - unless compressed somehow.) Preferably rotating or deleting old backups when running out of space or after a fixed number of backups. I want to be able to quickly and painlessly restore my system from these backups. This is my first time running ubuntu as my main development machine and I know from my experience with it as a server and in virtual machines that I regularly manage to make it unbootable or damage it to the point of being unable to rescue it. So how would you recommend I do this? There are so many options out there I really don't know where to start. There seems to be a vocal school of thought that it's sufficient to backup your home directory and the list of installed packages from the package manager. I've already installed lots of things from source, or outside of the package manager (development tools, ides, compilers, graphics drivers, etc.) So at the very least, if I do not back up the operating system itself I need to grab all config files, all program binaries, all created but required files, etc. I'd rather backup too much than too little - an ubuntu install is tiny anyway. Also this drastically reduces the restore time, which would cost me more in my time than the extra storage space. NULL is used correctly when the field is missing alltogether. Unfortunately, I have to be able to distinguish between NULL and 0 at this stage so any help would be appreciated. Thanks S.

• C++ How do you set an array of pointers to null in an initialiser list like way?

  I am aware you cannot use an initialiser list for an array. However I have heard of ways that you can set an array of pointers to NULL in a way that is similar to an initialiser list. I am not certain how this is done. I have heard that a pointer is set to NULL by default, though I do not know if this is guaranteed/ in the C++ standard. I am also not sure if initialising through the new operator compared to normal allocation can make a difference too.

• Why "object reference not set to an instance of an object" doesn't tell us which object?

  We're launching a system, and we sometimes get the famous exception NullReferenceException with the message Object reference not set to an instance of an object. However, in a method where we have almost 20 objects, having a log which says an object is null, is really of no use at all. It's like telling you, when you are the security agent of a seminar, that a man among 100 attendees is a terrorist. That's really of no use to you at all. You should get more information, if you want to detect which man is the threatening man. Likewise, if we want to remove the bug, we do need to know which object is null. Now, something has obsessed my mind for several months, and that is: Why .NET doesn't give us the name, or at least the type of the object reference, which is null?. Can't it understand the type from reflection or any other source? Also, what are the best practices to understand which object is null? Should we always test nullability of objects in these contexts manually and log the result? Is there a better way?
