    Hello IBM got me confused (again). For many years IBM have been pushing for Portlet Containers with the JSR 168 and later the JSR 286 Specification. 2008-2009, IBM the Lotus division introduced the iWidget Specification. Based on my reading, it is a more dynamic and lightweight version of the Portlets, close to Google Gadget. It uses a different paradigm than Porlet while providing the same features. A major differentiator with this kind of client side technologies is that you don’t need a big and costly Portal infrastructure. To not fall in the ‘It depends on needs’ discussions, let consider the following: * New company, no legacy portlet, no portal in place. What are your thoughts on this?

  • One page using querystring or many folders and pages?

    I have an application where I have the 'core' code in one folder for which there is a virtual directory in the root, such that I can include any core files using /myApp/core/bla.asp. I then have two folders outside of this with a default.asp which currently use the querystring to define what page should be displayed. One page is for general users, the other will only be accessible to users who have permission to manage users / usergroups / permissions. The core code checks the querystring and then checks the permissions for that user. An example of this as it is now is default.asp?action=view&viewtype=list&objectid=server. I am not worried about SEO as this is an internal app and uses Windows Auth. My question is, is it better the way it is now or would it be better to have something like the following: /server/view/list/ /server/view/?id=123 /server/create/ /server/edit/?id=123 /server/remove/?id=123 In the above folders I would have a home page which defines all the variables which are currently determined by the querystring - in /server/create/ for example, I would define the action as 'create', object name as 'server' and so on. In terms of future development, I really have no idea which method would be best. I think the 2nd method would be best in terms of following what page does what but this is such a huge change to make at this stage that I would really like some opinions, preferably based on experience. PS Sorry if the tags are wrong - I am new to this forum and thought this was a bit too much of a discussion for StackOverflow as that is very much right / wrong answer based. I got the idea SE is more discussion based.

    In my environment, I found web programmers, desktop programmers and both web and desktop programmers. About myself I started my career with desktop development using C and then Java, did couple of simple level projects. Then at the final graduating year, my project was a web one, so I turned to web development until this moment. But, when I meet people having chosen to be web or software developers from the beginning, I figure out that they have more knowledge/experience than I have. So I get kind of regret why didn't I specialize my self from the first day? The question is: Is it a good habit to work at two, more or less, different fields: web and desktop? Or we must specialize ourselves?

I know .Net web services can be written in VB or C#. Working with C,C++ will help getting used to writing code in C#. I do not have experience in .Net framework. I'd like to quickly get into writing .Net web services and learning on the go, without extensively spending a lot of time learning .Net framework (if possible) Any suggestions?   • How to setup external mail addresses without external autodiscover tries?

    We have a little Exchange/Outlook installation here that fetches the mails from our provider with POP3. Now to be able to send emails outside our organisation, I added another SMTP address to the Exchange User: [email protected] (Default / Reply Address) [email protected] Sending email works using the default address. But now there is an error message each time we start Outlook. Outlook tries to autodiscover using autodiscover.ourcompany.com which doesn't exist. Our autodiscover files are placed on our local server. I think all the servers are discovers, because everything works as expected. Everything except the error message on each Outlook start. (The error message is actually because of an invalid certificate but I don't see why Outlook should contact an external host at all!) So how can I solve this? Forcing Autodiscover on every Outlook client to use the local hosts? Or ist there an even better way?

  • Configure Web app for external access (IIS7), allowing only certain users via AD group. All users need internal access

    We have a Web app running in IIS7 (Server 2008 R2). I now need to allow external access with an SSL certificate, so certain users (e.g. the owner of the company) can use it remotely without VPN. They want to roll out the external access only to those specific users at first (thinking: a Windows credential prompt), BUT everyone will still need access internally (HTTP), without the prompt. I have the SSL cert installed on the server and public DNS configured. I've been trying to figure out how to work the authentication/authorization. I was thinking I need to disable Anonymous authn and set Windows authn, then I keep coming back to 'URL Authorization' in my research for the group setting; however, when I tried URL authz, (removed allow all, added allow rule for the special group), it broke the site internally (403.2 Forbidden, I believe it was). I thought maybe setting up a second site in IIS pointing to the same program would work, but the exact same thing happened (and again with a new app pool, just for kicks). So I guess my question is, how would you do this: allow external access, limited to users in a specific AD group, while still allowing internal access without a credentials prompt? How do I separate the external HTTPS and internal HTTP authorization requirements? Will I need to just copy the entire contents of the app in Windows Explorer to a new folder and create my external site from that? Is Windows authentication the correct option for this? I did come across this, which refers to creating a custom module.     I have a problem changing a dynamic web reference in the config file. Changing the url in the config file doesn't have any effect. I have to change the url in .settings and compile for it to change. I added the web reference using the wizard. Set the URL behavior to dynamic, which added the relevant XML tags in config file. In my solution I have the web API (web reference) in a separate project (class lib), so I referenced the project and copied the <applicationSettings> over. <applicationSettings> <StartupProject.Properties.Settings> <setting name="WebReference" serializeAs="String"> <value>http://someurl/somefile.asmx</value> </setting> </StartupProject.Properties.Settings> </applicationSettings> Note that it's <StartupProject.Properties.Settings> and not <WebRefProject.Properties.Settings>. Are there some limitations I'm not aware of or am I doing something wrong?

I'm trying to delete old calendar items (I have a few years' worth) in Outlook and was wondering if there was a way to delete only non-recurring items as I need the recurring events for the future. I tried View Arrange by Current view Category and figured that I could manually check and delete any calendar items by hand.     There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming.   • How can I open Outlook Calendar to a 2-3 week view by default?

    I use Outlook 2007, and I like to view my calendar 2 (or sometimes 3) weeks at a time. Its relatively easy to do, by dragging my mouse across several weeks in the mini calendar. BUT... it never stays that way. As soon as I change to Contacts and back to Calendar, the view resets to showing a whole month. Any ideas about how to change to default view?

    When I select View-Arrange By-Conversation in Outlook 2003, the messages I sent myself are not shown in the message threads (unlike the conversation view in say, Gmail). To show my own messages I have to go to the Sent Items folder, if not someone has replied to one of my messages and included my original text.     This may be hidden in the options somewhere but a glance through didn't find it: Is it at all possible to set Outlook so that a click on the "Reply" button (or, as I do, hitting Ctrl-R) will always reply-to-all, rather than reply to one? Or, I suppose, a basic switch of the reply buttons so that the default is reply-to-all, and, for example, I could hit Ctrl-Shift-R instead to reply to one? It's annoying me to constantly have to hit reply-to-all when that's all I do, and I sometimes forget to do it.

    Hey, I can't connect to an exchange server using windows XP and outlook 2007, using the "connect anywhere over HTTP" process, it has been working until recently and the user reports no recent changes to his environment. The error is "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" It will prompt me for the username and password which I can enter, then it will give the errorm however this only happens when I delete the account and enter all details for the excahnge server again. The client computer that is unable to connect using outlook can connect to the HTTPS mail service and login send/receive fine. Nobody else has reported issues. making a test environment with a clean install of XP and outlook 2007 gives the same error, but using windows 7 and outlook 2007 connects perfectly fine everytime. I also removed all passwords using control keymgr.dll which didnt help. Any assistance or ideas would be appreciated, at this point nothing I've tried from technet or google works <_<

  • VBE6.dll not found when opening Access 2007 database in Access 2010

    I have an access 2007 database that has some VBA code in it. I need to open this database in Access 2010, but when I first open it I get an error that says: the expression on open you entered as the event property setting produced the following error: file not found: VBE6.dll I believe it's becuase Access 2010 references VBE7.dll when it loads up, and my database was built to reference VBE6.dll. I've tried putting VBE6.dll in the same folder that VBE7.dll resides in, hoping it would just get loaded up, but no luck. What can I do to resolve this?

  • Zantaz's EAS exchange archive product doesn't integrate with Outlook in Windows 7

    I work at a place that uses Exchange with Outlook for mail, and they also use a product from Zantaz called "EAS" which does server-side archiving of old messages. One of the artifacts of this archival is that email attachments are missing from the archived messages when viewed in Outlook. EAS has a client tool that plugs into Outlook that enables easy retrieval of those archived messages and their attachments, but it doesn't seem to work when installed on Windows 7. I have no direct evidence of this, other than that it simply doesn't work on my Windows 7 machine, and some of our network support staff seem to corroborate this. The symptom is that Outlook seems to know nothing of the existence of this EAS app. The EAS app also has a system tray icon which is there and offers some minimal functionality, but the real goodness is the Outlook integration, which I sorely miss. So, my question is this: does anyone here know whether it's possible to coerce this EAS product into working correctly in Windows 7?

  • help with Outlook Exchange server and curl

    I work on a mac in a building full of PCs, and the IT department here doesn't have IMAP access turned on on the exchange servers. So I miss a lot of meetings because I don't get reminders because I access my mail via Outlook Web access. I had written a script to scrape my Outlook Web Access calendar and turn it into iCal format, so I could get my reminders via thunderbird or iCal.app. It basically downloaded the calendar page via curl, parsed the HTML and reformatted all the appointments as ical. it wasn't elegant, but it worked. Then they changed to outlook 2007, and it doesn't work any more. I have a sketchy knowledge of curl, and almost zero knowledge of how outlook works. Can anyone point me towards a reference for getting calendar info out of an exchange server without using outlook? If I can configure curl to get the HTML I will be happy, but if there's a more elegant way, such as getting the calendar info as XML I'll be delirious.
