  • dd-wrt router firmware QoS troubleshooting

    I've been using the dd-wrt firmware on my router and I like it a lot! But -- I'm not sure the quality of service (QoS) is working on it. I have it set up as follows: http, port 80 -- Premium bittorrent, port 6969 -- Bulk https, port 443 -- Premium dns, port 53 -- Premium Per the QoS documentation, these levels are: bandwidth is allocated based on the following percentages of uplink and downlink values for each class: Exempt: 100mbps - ignores global limits. Premium: 75% - 100% Express: 15% - 100% Standard: 10% - 100% Bulk: 1.5% - 100% This doesn't entirely seem to work, though -- with busy torrents going I get major pauses in my web browsing which sucks! The QoS documentation gives some steps to check the QoS ... What you'll be interested to look at will be the first set of source and destination IP, including the port numbers. Next the presence of l7proto and the "mark" field. The entries indicate the current live connection QoS priority applied on them based on the "mark" field. The "mark" values correspond to the following Exempt: 100 Premium: 10 Express: 20 Standard: 30 Bulk: 40 (no QoS matched): 0 You may see "mark=0" for some l7proto service even though they are in configured in the list of QoS rules. This may mean that the layer 7 pattern matching system didn't match a new or changed header for that protocol. Custom service on port matches will usually take care of these. Why is some port 6969 bittorrent traffic tagged mark=0 (not matched) by dd-wrt's QoS while others are tagged mark=40 (Bulk) .. any ideas?

    This is the standard scenario: User registers on the site User receives an account activation email, clicks link to activate Web site notifies the user that account is activated Now there are at least two pathways: User is taken to the login screen and asked to enter login details User is automatically logged in and taken to a welcome/profile/etc page While there are obvious benefits in (1) as far as the user's experience is concerned, there could be drawbacks as well. Option (2) offers improved security at cost of UX. Which of the scenarios is preferable and why? Any serious flaws in any of them?

    I develop a political survey website where anyone can vote once. Obviously I have to prevent multiple registrations for the survey remains relevant. Already I force every user to login with their Google, Facebook or Twitter account. But they can authenticate 3 times if they have an account on each, or authenticate with multiple accounts of the same platform (I have 3 accounts on Google). So I thought also store the IP address, but they can still go through a proxy... I thought also keep the HTTP User Agent with PHP's get_browser(), although they can still change browsers. I can extract the OS with a regex, to change OS is less easier than browsers. And there is also geolocation, for example with the Google Map API. So to summarize, several ideas: 1 / SSO Authentication (I keep the email) 2 / IP Address 3 / HTTP User Agent 4 / Geolocation with an API Have you any other ideas that I did not think? How to embed these tests? Execute in what order? Have you already deploy this kind of solution?

  • COM on Windows7 and Visual Studio

    I registered a COM dll (under administrator) using regsvr32, which I want to use in Visual Studio 2008 (under administrator) for my project in Windows 7. Now, when I try to use the interfaces and classes from the COM, then I can't see any of the methods. When I use the object browser to view the COM classes, then I can see that they are all empty. However when I use the same COM on windows XP using VS2008, then all methods are suddenly available. Does anybody know why this is happening and how to get this working under Windows 7?

The typical pattern is to present a challenge to each URL that is opened, yet the challenge doesn't actually belong to the page itself which causes additional bandwidth usage. So, if I open up six pages at the same time and want to present a challenge on each page. I want the challenge to be tied to the page and not to the session. How can I make this work with Spring and/or Struts.

At first i add a new user through default sign up page (E.g./users/sign_up) Then, i made "sign_up" page only available to signed_in users by following instructions from Devise before filter that prevents access to "new_user_registration_path" unless user is signed-in Now, after sign in process when i try open sign up page it always directs me to root_path! How can i access sign up page?     Hello stackoverflow, I'm working on an Ruby on Rails application (2.3.x) and i want to make a form that lets the user login or register. I want to do this in the same form. But i want to use the validates_presence_of methods and i don't want to slap the "conventions over configurations" in the face. So another thing i have tried is adding a hidden field to the form: #login form <%= f.hidden_field :login, :value => true %> # and ofcourse set it to false if we want to register. And then i wanted to use the method: before_validation before_validation_on_create do |user| if params[:user].login == true #throws an error i know... validates_presence_of :email, :password validates_format_of :email, :with => /\A([^@\s]+)@((?:[-a-z0-9]+\.)+[a-z]{2,})\Z/i else validates_presence_of :name, :email, :password validates_format_of :email, :with => /\A([^@\s]+)@((?:[-a-z0-9]+\.)+[a-z]{2,})\Z/i validates_confirmation_of :password end end But this doesn't work because i can't access the params. And login isn't a attribute for the user object. But i thought that in this way i could validate the email and password params if the user wants to login. And all the other attrs if the user want to register. So all i could think of doesn't work how i want it to work. So my main goal is this: 1 form for login/register with the use of the validation methods in the user model. So if we want to login but don't fill in any information = give validation errors. And if the user wants to login but the email/password combination doens't match give the "@user.errors.add(:email, "the combination wasn't found in the db...")". And the same goes for user register... Thanks in advance!

I'm not really sure how to go about this, as this could pave the way to bruteforce attack, since you could check for any username and see whether or not it exists. Any suggestions?

  • how to make it easy for users to register at my site?

    I want to make it dirt simple for users coming to my site to register so they can post comments, vote on things, etc. I would like for them to be able to use their facebook id, twitter id, yahoo mail id, gmail id, AIM id, msn id, or whatever else people are likely to have (not necessarily all of those, but the more the better). I want my mom to be able to do it in 30 seconds or less. (that is, no "enter your open id url here" type thing that would confuse her). I prefer they not have to pick a unique name, as that gets annoying as the site gets more users and it gets hard to find one that is unique. What is the best option here? I'm not quite sure about OpenId vs. OAuth, and whether there are other options. And I'd like it to be as simple for me, the developer, as possible (of course!). I don't want to spend forever learning some protocol, nor have to structure my whole app around this. It would be great if there was a site with sample code that is pretty easy to drop in. BTW, StackOverflow is a good example of a site that was easy for me to register for.

  • If spambots are filling out forms on my website, should I mark the mail as spam?

    Apparently spambots have discovered the contact forms my website. I'm considering adding a CAPTCHA, but in the meantime I've been getting dozens of completed website forms in my Gmail account each day. I know I can configure a filter to always allow e-mails from my website to be delivered (i.e., "never send to spam"), but I'm wondering whether there are also larger implications. At first, I was marking the spam forms as spam because I figured it would block the sender's e-mail address from getting through again. But since then, I've given it some more thought. I know many spam filters use Bayesian filters and other techniques to identify spam based on its content. If I mark all these e-mails as spam, will legitimate e-mails from my website be marked as spam? Even if I stop marking the messages as spam, I can see another potential problem. My form is pretty standard (in fact, it's probably very similar to other online forms). If I mark my spambot-submitted website forms as spam, will Gmail begin to mark other people's similar-looking messages as spam?

  • Easiest solution to setup payments for a conference registration page?

    I've got a fair amount of website development experience, but I've been asked to setup a conference registration page in short order. However, I have absolutely zero experience with shopping carts, payment processing, etc. What is the absolutely quickest and easiest way to get this thing up and running? Here are my criteria: Site is currently hosted on Godaddy.com and someone has suggested using their QuickCart We cannot use any option that visits the paypal.com domain because it has been blocked my a large segment of the potential audience (on a military base). Need a $0 option for speakers Cancellations can be accepted, so maybe something that could handle that would be a bonus There is no "product" other than a confirmation that they have registered for the conference.
