• ubuntu update problem: freezes on "preparing to update mysql-server-5.1"

  I'm trying to update my ubuntu desktop. When it tries to update mysql-server-5.1, it freezes up saying preparing to update mysql-server-5.1. It won't let me do any other updates, because it says that things are broken, and tells me to reinstall this. I don't use mysql-server, so i would be happy to just remove the whole thing. But it won't let me do a remove.

• Windows 7 system drive says it is raw, but System Recovery starts without issues

  I have been running Windows 7 RC1 since it was available a couple of months ago and had no issues whatsoever until today. When I start my laptop, Windows does not boot but instead Windows System Recovery starts. I've used diskpart to list the partitions on the drive and my system partition (c:) has a RAW filesystem. I really need to save all data on the disk as fast as I cant and I would really like not to have to reinstall my system.

In Windows XP this can be done via Add/Remove Programs. Is there something equivalent on OSX? Or does reinstalling the runtime overwrite the current version?

• Macbook Pro keeps ejecting anything I put into the internal optical drive

  My hard disk crashed and I need to reinstall Mac OS X. I restart, insert the installation DVD, press c on the keyboard and the dvd ejects. I've tried different DVDs, even CDs. It's a Macbook Pro from march 2008. Is it broken? Or can it be something more severe like the firewire controller on the motherboard (since I noticed this after my hard drive started to act strangely)? I've ran Apple Hardware Test successfully.

  Started off with a Server Core install to which I then added the GUI with: Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra So far so good, I then removed the GUI again to get back to text only mode with: Remove-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra Now at this point I should beable to use SConfig option 12 to reinstall the GUI again but that SConfig option is missing: "12) Restore Graphical User Interface (GUI)" not present, how can I get SConfig to display this option? Has anyone else noticed that this option is missing. Thanks, Nick

  I'm thinking about encrypting my whole harddrive for example using TrueCrypt, which I've used for encrypting file containers for a while. It is possible to encrypt the whole harddisk through the program and then add a password secured bootloader before the actual bootloader. Is it possible to do this on a dualboot system with Windows 7 and Fedora 15 currently using Grub as the main bootloader? If so, is it possible to reinstall a system later or will that ruin the whole setup? Thanks

  I've install apache2 on an Unbuntu 12.04 machine, but I can't get the server to start at boot time. Although I've tried many things : reinstall apache2 run update-rc.d apache2 enable But each time the apache2 is not start after boot time : I get nothing with a pgrep apache2 or a ps -e | grep apache2 UPDATE I've also tried the logging tweak suggested in another related post, but no entries at all can be found in /var/log/syslog What could I do to make it work ? I was very careful to leave the recovery partition intact so that I could do this, but I don't see a way to boot to it.   The error when trying to open MS Office is that there is no file association & another error when trying to open individual progs is - side bt side configuration is incorrect. The suite has been working perfectly until last week ( no significant changes to system ) I have tried downloading the VC++ & uninstalled & reinstalled twice, even deleted the registry entry for office 2010 before reinstall but have had no success. • SSD has 32-bit Win 7 Ult.; partition now both unformattable and undeletable.

  Drive 0, Partition 1 can't be deleted or formatted, at least by using the HD drive bay and attempting a delete or format with the 32-bit Win 7 CD. Most of my data is still on it and available for read/write (where the drive isn't occasionally pocked with "unrecoverable" or "corrupted" files). I've just never heard of a condition where the HD cannot be formattable. I now just have a very expensive backup drive that's got Swiss cheesed areas. The thing doesn't accept a Windows 7 repair or reinstall either.
