  • Event feed implementation - will it scale?

    - by SlappyTheFish
Situation: I am currently designing a feed system for a social website whereby each user has a feed of their friends' activities. I have two possible methods how to generate the feeds and I would like to ask which is best in terms of ability to scale. Events from all users are collected in one central database table, event_log. Users are paired as friends in the table friends. The RDBMS we are using is MySQL. Standard method: When a user requests their feed page, the system generates the feed by inner joining event_log with friends. The result is then cached and set to timeout after 5 minutes. Scaling is achieved by varying this timeout. Hypothesised method: A task runs in the background and for each new, unprocessed item in event_log, it creates entries in the database table user_feed pairing that event with all of the users who are friends with the user who initiated the event. One table row pairs one event with one user. The problems with the standard method are well known – what if a lot of people's caches expire at the same time? The solution also does not scale well – the brief is for feeds to update as close to real-time as possible The hypothesised solution in my eyes seems much better; all processing is done offline so no user waits for a page to generate and there are no joins so database tables can be sharded across physical machines. However, if a user has 100,000 friends and creates 20 events in one session, then that results in inserting 2,000,000 rows into the database. Question: The question boils down to two points: Is this worst-case scenario mentioned above problematic, i.e. does table size have an impact on MySQL performance and are there any issues with this mass inserting of data for each event? Is there anything else I have missed?

  • Parsing a JSON feed from YQL using jQuery

    - by Keith
I am using YQL's query.multi to grab multiple feeds so I can parse a single JSON feed with jQuery and reduce the number of connections I'm making. In order to parse a single feed, I need to be able to check the type of result (photo, item, entry, etc) so I can pull out items in specific ways. Because of the way the items are nested within the JSON feed, I'm not sure the best way to loop through the results and check the type and then loop through the items to display them. Here is a YQL (http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/console/) query.multi example and you can see three different result types (entry, photo, and item) and then the items nested within them: select * from query.multi where queries= "select * from twitter.user.timeline where id='twitter'; select * from flickr.photos.search where has_geo='true' and text='san francisco'; select * from delicious.feeds.popular" or here is the JSON feed itself: http://query.yahooapis.com/v1/public/yql?q=select%20*%20from%20query.multi%20where%20queries%3D%22select%20*%20from%20flickr.photos.search%20where%20user_id%3D'23433895%40N00'%3Bselect%20*%20from%20delicious.feeds%20where%20username%3D'keith.muth'%3Bselect%20*%20from%20twitter.user.timeline%20where%20id%3D'keithmuth'%22&format=json&env=store%3A%2F%2Fdatatables.org%2Falltableswithkeys&callback=

  • A feed scanner that reads data

    - by kylex
I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but... I need a scanner (paper feed scanner) where depending on either a barcode, or number, or some identifier on the paper being scanned, creates a PDF file with a name based on that identifier. For example: If I scanned a page with the number 12345 on the top-left of the page, a PDF file named 12345.pdf would be created. Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated!

  • 2-legged OAuth and the Gmail atom feed

    - by jdcotter
We're trying to get 2-legged OAuth to work with the Gmail atom feed. We're using the Java library contributed by John Kristian, Praveen Alavilli and Dirk Balfanz. [http://oauth.net/code/] instead of the GData library. We know we have the correct CONSUMER_KEY and CONSUMER_SECRET, etc. becuase it works with the Contacts feed (http://www.google.com/m8/feeds/contacts/default/full) and have no problems. However with Gmail atom feed it always returns: HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized Any ideas? Should we try a different OAuth framework or does the problem lie on the Google side?

Many thanks, Galen

  • How to model a social news feed on Google App Engine

    - by PEZ
We want to implement a "News feed" where a user can see messages broadcasted by her friends, sorted with newest message first. But the feed should reflect changes in her friends list. (If she adds new friends, messages from those should be included in the feed, and if she removes friends their messages should not be included.) If we use the pubsub-test example and attach a recipient list to each message this means a lot of manipulation of the message recipients lists when users connect and disconnect friends. We first modeled publish-subscribe "fan out" using conventional RDBMS thinking. It seemed to work at first, but then, since the IN operator works the way it does, we quickly realized we couldn't continue on that path. We found Brett Slatkin's presentation from last years Google I/O and we have now watched it a few times but it isn't clear to us how to do it with "dynamic" recipient lists. What we need are some hints on how to "think" when modeling this.

  • Scrapy - Follow RSS links

    - by Tupak Goliam
Hello, I was wondering if anyone ever tried to extract/follow RSS links using SgmlLinkExtractor/CrawlSpider. I can't get it to work... I am using the following rule: rules = ( Rule(SgmlLinkExtractor(tags=('link',), attrs=False), follow=True, callback='parse_article'), ) (having in mind that rss links are located in the link tag). I am not sure how to tell SgmlLinkExtractor to extract the text() of the link and not to search the attributes ... Any help is welcome, Thanks in advance

  • Making JSON Feed Work Server to Server

    - by Oscar Godson
I have a JSON feed (which I don't directly control, I have to ask the server admins to update it), that is returning NULL, or otherwise not working when I try to access it from another server. The actual feed works fine, but I can't get it to work like a normal API. Why can I use Flickr, WhitePages, Twitter, etc's JSON APIs, but for: http://portlandoregon.gov/shared/cfm/json.cfm It returns NULL in the browser when using JS. If I call it on the same server, it's fine though. If this is a server issue, what do I ask the admins to change, and if this is a local (browser) based issue, what am I doing wrong for this one feed that works for every other JSON API?

  • Fix: Outlook 2010 Update Progress

    - by wisecarver
Hey hey hey…Microsoft Office was released today on MSDN! What I’m posting here is not intended as a complaint. The updates to Office are awesome! I did however run into a few problems upgrading today. First of all, if you going to install the 64bit Office 2010 please note that you can’t install the 64bit Office 2010 if you are trying to install on a machine that is running 32bit Office 2007. You will need to uninstall your 32bit Office 2007 or install the 32bit Office 2010 instead of the 64bit version...(read more)

  • Ever since installing Ubuntu Accomplishments, RSSOwl won't open without crashing. Why?

    - by Edd Baisley
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on an older machine, so I am accustomed to not being able to run resource-heavy apps well, or at all. However, RSSOwl had been running like a champ up until the moment I installed Ubuntu Accomplishments. I'm not the most code savvy, but I don't see what one of these would have to do with the other. I have already tried removing and re-installing RSSOwl, to no avail, and I'd rather not have to uninstall Accomplishments, because I love trophies of all kinds. Any ideas?

  • Opera 11 - prevent panels/tabs opening when examining RSS feeds

    - by Damien_The_Unbeliever
I've reviewed the suggested questions, based on my title, so apologies if I'm going over old ground. Opera 11 recently came out. Whilst I use it as my RSS aggregator, I don't use it for any other messaging purposes. So I'm annoyed with, whenever I open Feeds-Read Feeds, I suddenly get the panels side menu, and the Mail panel opened automatically. This is new behaviour from the 10.x series, and I can't seem to find an option to turn it off. When I go to "Read Feeds", I just want the feeds window to open. That's it. Any ideas?

  • PHP's SimpleXML not handling &#8217 ; properly

    - by Matty
I'm parsing an RSS feed that has an &#8217; in it. SimpleXML turns this into a ’. What can I do to stop this? Just to answer some of the questions that have come up - I'm pulling an RSS feed using CURL. If I output this directly to the browser, the &#8217; displays as ’ which is what's expected. When I create a new SimpleXMLElement using this, (e.g. $xml = new SimpleXmlElement($raw_feed); and dump the $xml variable, every instance of &#8217; is replaced with ’. It appears that SimpleXML is having trouble with UTF-8 ampersand encoded characters. (The XML declaration specifies UTF-8.) I do have control over the feed after CURL has retrieved the feed before it's used to construct a SimpleXML element.

  • Simplepie - fetch feeds from database

    - by krike
I want to fetch multiple feeds from the database and in so doing fetch all new content from those feeds it works but there is a problem and I have no idea what's causing it, this is the code: $feed_sql = mysqli_query($link, "SELECT feed from tutorial_feed WHERE approved=1"); $feeds = array(); $i = 0; while($feed_r = mysqli_fetch_object($feed_sql)): $feeds[$i] .= $feed_r->feed; $i++; endwhile; $feed = new SimplePie($feeds); $feed-handle_content_type(); foreach($feed-get_items(0, 100) as $item) : echo $item-get_permalink().""; endforeach; I first get Notice: Undefined offset: 0 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 1 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 2 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 3 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 4 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 5 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 6 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 7 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 8 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 9 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 Notice: Undefined offset: 10 in I:\wamp\www\cmstut\includes\cron.php on line 22 and then it will start printing the permalinks to the new content based on the imported feeds, I know undefined offset means it does not exist but I don't get it, any help would be appreciated

  • Working With Feeds and Lists

    - by Nathan Campos
    I'm using a ListView component to list up some informations at a RSS feed, but when the user clicks the row, I want to change into a detailed view of that RSS Item, so far I've done this: function parseFeed(feed) { var html = ""; for(var i = 0; i < feed.items.length && i < 5; i++) { var item = feed.items[i]; var title = item.title; html += "\n<li onClick='goDetailed()'>\n"; html += "<h3><a href='#' class='ui-link-inherit'>" + title + "</a></h3>\n"; html += "<p>" + item.description + "</p>\n"; html += "</li>"; } $("#dList").append(html); $("#dList").listview('refresh'); } function goDetailed() { $.mobile.changePage($('#detailedPage')); } One of my problems is that the Back button won't come back(it does nothing). My other question is how I can pass the item.title, item.description, item.link and item.updated of the selected row(feed item) to some <div data-role="content">'s at the detail page.

  • Adding my podcast to my Facebook fan page

    - by Donald Burr
I've set up a Facebook fan page for my podcast, Otaku no Podcast. I'd love to add a Flash based player to the fan page that can play the latest episode of my podcast. Or, at the very least, a link to the latest episode on my website (which has its own Flash-based audio player). My podcast's website of course exports a valid RSS feed. I've tried several different podcast player/RSS feed display applications including Podcast Pickle (which has a facebook app), but none of them appear to work and/or are maintained any more. Podcast Pickle used to work for me a long time ago, but is no longer working for me. Any ideas?

  • How can I transfer a blog hosted on Community Server to WordPress?

    - by Martin Plante
I have a blog hosted on Community Server 2.1 (old version). I want to transfer it to WordPress (.com). I have tried exporting it to the BlogML format, but it failed with an exception. I saved a copy of the full RSS feed, by setting the # of posts to show to a huge number, save, then lower it back. I have all images and do not mind having to upload and rename them one by one. There must be a way to read that RSS file and either directly import it into WordPress, or for a more complicated path, transform it with the proper XSLT into the BlogML (or other) format, to import it into WordPress?

  • What happened to NewsGator and FeedDemon?

    - by user1413
It's been a while since I used NewsGator and FeedDemon. I tried to log on last week and today and both seem broken. NewsGator no longer has a login -- it has been replaced by DataWire on the www.newsgator.com home page and my login no longer works. FeedDemon is completely broken -- it is no longer sucking in RSS feeds. What happened? And what do I do now? Do I need to get a completely new RSS feeder? Or is there something else that NewsGator is doing that I'm not aware of?

  • Filter items from a feed using words in a text file, with Yahoo Pipes

    - by pufferfish
I have a pipe that filters an RSS feed and removes any item that contains "stopwords" that I've chosen. Currently I've manually created a filter for each stopword in the pipe editor, but the more logical way is to read these from a file. I've figured out how to read the stopwords out of the text file, but how do I apply the filter operator to the feed, once for every stopword? The documentation states explicitly that operators can't be applied within the loop construct, but hopefully I'm missing something here.
