• How well do laptops with Nvidia Optimus work?

  I am considering buying a Dell XPS 15 laptop. The laptop has a nvidia 420m card which should work with linux but I keep reading about the Nvidia optimus technology that isn't supported on Linux. I am not really interested in switching from Nvidia to intel to save power but need to know that the Nvidia card will infact work if i installed Ubuntu. If anyone has experience usung a nvidia card with optimus technology or even better the exact laptop in question (Dell XPS 15 with 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 420M) it would be great. A major problem holding people back from adopting Linux is this sort of hardware issue. I am a long term Ubuntu user and supporter who can't afford to make a mistake with a purchase like this. I don't want to spend £500+ to find I have no graphics acceleration because Windows7 is not an option.

• Drawing graphics in Java game

  I am quite new to game development, so here is a question (maybe a stupid one): In my sidescroller i have a bunch of different graphics objects that i need to draw (player, background tiles, creatures, projectiles etc). Most tutorials i've read so far show that each object has its own draw method, which is then called from some other method. What if I had one method that does all the drawing? Lets say i keep all my objects in an array or queue (or multiple arrays) and then go through each of them, get an image and draw it. So basically would it be better (and why) to have each object have its own draw method or one method that does all the drawing? Or does it matter at all? I feel like the second option is more comfortable, because then all the stuff to do with drawing would be in one place...

  I applied for a Web developer job in Quebec City and they call me back for a phone interview everything went well it last for over a hours and at the end they ask me to send code simple and a portfolio but in my research about the company and their products I found a PHP error(bug) in their app. Should I tell them or I will look like a total jerk and blew my chance for a interview? I know it might sound stupid, as a Jr developer I did 2 interviews they didn't went so well and I am very interested in this position part of my question is like a big lack of confidence so to make it short should I tell them about where is the error and how to fix it? • Accidentally uninstalled Ubuntu 14.04 system settings. How to get them back?

  Somehow, cleaning up useless software (using software center), I uninstalled Ubuntu "system settings". I did this by mistake. Now I fail to find system settings application using software center (and there are so many items in history...). It seems strange to me because usually when I try to uninstall something critical (system testing for example), the dependencies manager tells me It will uninstall the whole desktop system then. I am sure I did not have that warning. So I need the name of the software to install or a command line command rather than a system restore to get it back. Very interesting thing. If you ever want to play with this and reproduce it, you will be confused to see Ubuntu Mobile system settings instead! Yes, mobile network and touchscreen settings! Happy pre-release viewing!

  I'm currently doing R&D for a web application which we plan to host ourselves initially and then allow customers to self host. My task has been evaluating web frameworks to see which would give us the biggest productivity initially and ease of maintence while also allowing us to easily support deployment to customer controlled environments. Our team has experience with ASP.NET (MVC and Webforms) and Ruby on Rails. Our experience with rails is that windows deployment is a very taboo subject and any questions on IRC or SO are met with knee jerk "why not linux" responses.. However in this case our target market may be running windows or linux servers. Is this also the case in django land? Is it possible with rubbish performance? Is it possible with lost of pain? Is it seen as reasonable and not treated as a completely stupid idea for not wanting to run linux?

  First off I did something stupid. I downloaded a Nvidia driver even though I have an integrated chipset. After installation my unity was still working. However, when I restarted my computer I got an error message saying that I can't run unity. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. I restarted my computer. Unity still does not work. • Circular Bullet Spread not Even

  I'm creating a bullet shooter much in the style of Touhou. Right now I want to have a very simple circular shot being fired from the enemy. See this picture: As you can see, the spacing is very uneven, which isn't very good if you want to survive.   My brother has come up with an interesting business idea that could be commercialised. For over a month I have been creating the foundation for SaaS. I have been treating this as commercial project so designing using patterns and best practices. One of the reasons I want to include this in my Resume is my full time job doesn't involve current trendy ASP.Net technologies (e.g Linq/Entity Relationships, jQuery, ASP.Net MVC 3, Silverlight, etc) so the resume lacks impact. In my full time job I work on a 7 year old well designed product and since our data and web layers work well it would be stupid to re-engineer them only because recruiters think Linq, ASP.Net MVC and jQuery are cool. To maintain the data history I always uses the values with WHERE condition(WHERE StatusColumn=1) And will set the StatusColumn to 0 if the data is edited (So that I could keep the previous data).   When I open an avi file under Gnome Mplayer, there is an error report: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I then followed this blog to solve this problem, which suggests two ways. The first way is to call mplayer in terminal: mplayer -vo xv video.wmv This works for me. But I would like to try the second way, which is to write options in one of the configure files of Gnome Mplayer. I choose to write into ~/.mplayer/config, where I wrote: -vo xv But it does not work. So I was wondering if I make any mistake? What to write into the configure file? Thanks and regards!

• Why should i write a commit message?

  Why should i write a commit message? I dont want to and i think its stupid every single time. A gui frontend i use which will go unnamed forces you to do it. I hear other doing it everytime even if they are using the VCS on the command line. If i commit several times a day and havent finish a feature what am i writing about? • System crash when trying to drag cells in LibreOffice Calc

  Some time after upgrady to Saucy I noticed several freezes and crashes when simply trying to drag content of selected cells to another place in LibreOffice Calc (version 4.1.2.3 from repository). The system stops responding - although for example Clementine still plays music from playlist - I am not able to do anything with the mouse (cursor is able to move, but no reaction on clicking). Did anybody of you also have this problem and if yes, do you have a solution? I tried to completely remove LibreOffice and install them again but did not worked for me. Currently avoiding use of drag and drop in Calc but it is stupid. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

  I may be an alien around here, but here's my problem: the speed limit on old Ubuntu releases (= before 11) was very very fast. It was really great for me. Now, on Ubuntu 11, they may have thought: "who will ever want that speed? Nobody! So let's put the maximum speed to a lower limit". It's so stupid that they tried to narrow down the speed to some other famous OS. If Linux is more powerful, why remove some of its power? I don't get that. So is there any way to override that speed limit and get my keyboard as fast as it is on other previous versions?

• Ubuntu 12.04 installer Crashed

  I downloaded Multiple times Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.04.1. And tried to install them using first Virtual box if it work I move to install on actual drive. I dont knw but 12.04.1 dont wanna install on my system So i downloaded 12.04 release and installed it on Virtual box and it installed perfectly then i moved on to install it as Dual OS along with windows 7 but the installer crashed just like the other version and I dont know what the heck is the problem with ubuntu OS Installers. Ubuntu really need to work on their Installer. I love Ubuntu but such things are really headache. At first I thought image was not properly so i burned on another dvd but alas no use same stupid error. Now there are 3 images of 12.04 and 2 images of 12.04.1 and none of them is working on my system. And wasted two dvds. Does anyone know how to solve this problemo.

  I was having problems with sound (mono only output), so following advice from another askubuntu question I made some edits in /etc/pulse/default.pa After rebooting I had no sound at all. So I deleted /etc/pulse/default.pa entirely and tried another reboot. I did not backup the file (stupid, I know). How to come back to working config? edit: I tried: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio (reboot) sudo apt-get install pulseaudio (reboot) It's still not working. The file /etc/pulse/default.pa is missing. Here's what pulseaudio and pacmd commands show: $ pulseaudio E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup without any loaded modules, refusing to work. $ pacmd No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.

  Is this possible? I want to make my own config file for my customizations that I can apply whenever I reinstall my system. For example, Ubuntu's default font color is just stupid. I want it to be BLACK and not dark grey. And I want to turn on autosave every 3rd minute and backup files. Is there a config file that I can change? • Why does multiplying texture coordinates scale the texture?

  I'm having trouble visualizing this geometrically - why is it that multiplying the U,V coordinates of a texture coordinate has the effect of scaling that texture by that factor? eg if you scaled the texture coordinates by a factor of 3 ..then doesn't this mean that if you had texture coordinates 0,1 and 0,2 ...you'd be sampling 0,3 and 0,6 in the U,V texture space of 0..1? How does that make it bigger eg HLSL: tex2D(textureSampler, TexCoords*3) Integers make it smaller, decimals make it bigger I mean I understand intuitively if you added to the U,V coordinates, as that is simply an offset into the sampling range, but what's the case with multiplication? I have a feeling when someone explains this to me I'm going to be feeling mighty stupid

This is probably a stupid question but I'm using this tutorial as a starting guide and I'm stuck with where I have to set a socket with this command fastcgi-mono-server4 /applications=/:/var/www/www.domain1.xyz/ /socket=tcp:127.0.0.1:9000 What path am I supposed to replace '/var/www/www.domain1.xyz/' with? If I run the command as is I get an error saying Error creating the socket: Address already in use root@ubuntu:~# kill 9000; Please help.
