  I would like to resolve this 'error: gnome.h: No such file or directory ' on ubuntu. • WTH? Upgrading Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 Problem: No Internet Connection?

  Earlier today I tried upgrading my Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kaola from the update manager. (FYI: all 9.10 updates were applied prior to this) Everything was going well downloading until I got an error dialog informing me that some software packages weren't downloaded because of an Internet connection. Would say it was halfway thru. Anyway, Was told that the software packages that it did download, however, would kept and I figure it's not a big deal. Just run it again. But first ran Firefox to verify my connection as I haven't had any connection problems. But my internet connection was/is fine as evident by this posting. With that cleared, I ran the update manager again, clicked on "Upgrade" and this time I received "Could not download the release notes. Please check your internet connection" huh? This is my first time dealing w/ Ubuntu and my first upgrade so I am hoping someone can help. Not sure what the problem can be. I am can surf the web w/ no problems. Please help. PS: There was no installing at any point. Just downloading. PSS: The software it managed to download the first time around is now visible in the update manager but don't think I should install as I see in the compiz description it's for v1:0.8-4-0ubuntu2 I figure it's designed for 10.04 and might ruin things further if I install

• How can I get Gnome-Do to open in multiple X Screens?

  Hi, I LOVE Gnome-Do (the Ubuntu version of QuickSilver). The only thing is that I have several monitors, which are all completely separate X Screens (I.E. I can't move windows between them), and Gnome-Do will only open in ONE of those monitors. If I go to Monitor/Screen #2 and press Super+Space, the Gnome-Do window appears in the first monitor. Is it possible to get a separate Instance of Gnome-Do on each Screen? P.S. Using profiles may be a work-around...I've managed to get multiple instances of Firefox by using "firefox -P my_first_screen"...anything like that available in Gnome-do?

• NFS Issues in Gnome

  I mount NFSv4 export via /etc/fstab and mount and use the shared folder in nautilus. There are two issues: When I copy a large file (around 4 GB) to the NFS server, the progress bar rapidly goes to 2 GB and then basically stops moving. But the copy s still in progress - it is just not displayed well When I disconnect from the network without unmounting the nfs share, nautilus freezes. How can I work around that? /etc/export on the server /export/share 192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,insecure,no_subtree_check,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000) /etc/fstab on the client: server:/share /mnt nfs4 soft,tcp

• Desktop directory disappears in gnome-terminal, then appears again, but all files in it are deleted

  I am able to see my Desktop and with all its various links and files. But in the terminal when I try to access the Desktop directory: cd ~/Desktop I get: bash: cd: /home/administrator/Desktop: No such file or directory Then I find I am unable to access any of the files on the Desktop when I click on them although the file icons are there. Then the icons disappear after my clicking on them. Then I am able to access the Desktop directory in the terminal but the directory is empty i.e. all the files/folders have been deleted. What's going on? How can I fix this?

• Problem virtualizing Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on VirtualBox 3.1 on Windows Vista 64 bit

  Software & Hardware Setup Host System : Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit Guest : Ubuntu 10.04 (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso) 32 bit VM : VirtualBox 3.1.8 Hardware : Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 4GB SDRAM What Happened I followed the tutorial called Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox located here: www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox At first I downloaded ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso because I figured that it would be a perfect fit with my Vista 64 OS. I was wrong because it turns out the my Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 CPU does not have Intel® Virtualization Technology. So I had to go with the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso which is 32 bit. This got me to the point where I could actually create the Ubuntu VM. So I set up the VM in VirtualBox (according to the tutorial I was following) to prepare for the Ubuntu 10.04 virtualization. Please go to my Picassa web album to see the screen shots of my VM settings and Ubuntu boot process so you can see what I experienced (they appear in the order that I experienced them in). www.picasaweb.google.com/rubysiddhi/ProblemVirtualizingUbuntu100432BitOnVirtualBox31OnWindowsVista64# The first 17 images show the VM settings. The last 8 show my attempt at virtualizing Ubuntu 10.04. You can see booting up but ultimately failing. The Specifics The one error message I got was: (process:210): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0) It appeared on a black screen that sort of looked like a Windows console screen but with out the c:\ or the ability to type. Then this error message got more complex when tons of text appeared in the screen. Pictures 23 - 25 in the album show this text. I should also mention that I found this post in the Ubuntu forums by zonination who seemed to have similar problems to mine even though they had a different set up. The main issue I think zonination and me may be having is the fact that we can not change the color mode to 32 bit while it is booting. I think the 16 bit color mode maybe making Ubuntu fail. Not certain though. Well I hope I explained my problem thoroughly and clearly. Thanks for the tutorial. It got me started but, now I hope to finish this process so I can start developing in Ubuntu. Even the login screen has my Desktop background. However it is a little jarring when I shut down/use grubby and its in the default maroon and white scheme. Is there any way to change this to make it more similar to my own color scheme in terminal?

After restarting, I was looking forward to some UI integration with my host desktop (resize window, not needing to press right-Ctrl to escape the client window, and having copy and paste functionality. Is it possible to install the Guest Additions without the X Window overhead (I plan to only use for shell commands)? If additional packages are required, which ones?

  I'm currently planning to get a VPS from VPS.net for a PHP project. I personally haven't used CentOS (which is recommended all the time) and this is not a good time for me to start learning it, so I want to stick with Ubuntu, as that's the one I have experience with. Now there's the good ol' 8.04 LTS that's well supported, however, 10.04 LTS was released two days ago. I installed it on my laptop and it is pretty slick (doesn't matter for a server) and quick. But I am skeptical about it: Has anyone tried it in a production environment so far? How does it perform versus 8.04? Any serious bugs so far?

  I tried to search for an answer, except that, uhhh there is no search. I want to share a Ubuntu One folder with people who do not have a Ubuntu One account. Is that possible? I found this answer in the faq, "Yes! Since Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu One supports sharing files publicly. Right click on a file already synchronized by Ubuntu One and select "Publish via Ubuntu One". Right-click on the file again and select "Copy Ubuntu One public URL". You can now paste the URL and share it with whoever you want." That doesn't seem to help me with 11.04. There is no 'Publish via Ubuntu One' button in 11.04. Does anyone know if there is a way to share files with non-ubuntu users? If so, how? Thanks In Advance, Bob

• How to change mouse pointer icon in Xfce Debian 7 Wheezy?

  I copied the cursor theme (oxy-neon or Oxygen Neon) to /usr/share/icons and from Applications Menu - Settings - Mouse, I am able to see the new theme. I clicked on it and the pointer doesn't change. However the text typing icon ('I'), busy icon, hand icon, and resize window icons got changed. The pointer icon remains the same, the black Adwaita. I removed the Adwaita folder from the icons folder, and still the mouse pointer doesn't change. Is the pointer theme specified elsewhere? I have no setting under home directory. I tried logging out, restart, restarting xfwm4, but nothing works. I just found that the icon pointer changes when the pointer is inside Firefox, but it's not consistent. It keeps changing when I click menu items. Very weird. Any idea how to fix this? • Issues when upgrading gnome-session

  I'm having issues since yesterday after an upgrade. GNOME session got messed up somehow and now i cannot install further upgrades nor new apps. Here is what i got from terminal after doing the recommended apt-get install -f; (Reading database ... 166876 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace gnome-session 3.0.1-0ubuntu1~build2 (using .../gnome-session_3.0.2-0ubuntu3~natty1_all.deb) ... • Can't add to panel nor delete panel

  Hello everybody! I cannot add any applet to any (top or bottom) panel, cannot delete any panel nor create a new panel. When I right-click on the panel the only options available are: Properties, Help or About panels. [I cannot post an image because of spam prevention, so I'll do my best] I can see when I right-click (bold means clickable): Add to panel Properties Delete this panel New panel Help About Panels Trying to solve this I did what is usually suggested: gconftool-2 –-recursive-unset /apps/panel # might be optional rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel pkill gnome-panel but I only got a nice empty panel (no Applications Places System, no clock, no shutdown button...) to which I couldn't add any applet, so I decided to take the default profiles in .gconf and .gconfd from a live CD and overwrite mines. Now we are back to the beginning. I also have tried to lock completely the panel (with both gconf-editor and pessulus) and later unlock it completely but it didn't work. Here is the system information: $ lsb_release Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Release: 10.04 Codename: lucid Thank you very much.

  My desk is situated at the edge of the range of a wireless signal which I use occasionally (when away from my desk) and is therefore saved in network manager. At my desk, however, I plug into the ethernet cable. While I'm working the computer is constantly trying to join the wireless network and usually failing this results in two annoying behaviors. 1: In gnome shell the network connect and disconnect notices keep popping up at the bottom of the screen and I have to click them to make them disappear (I assume it's been fixed in the next version of gnome). 2: (the worst!) Occasionally the wifi password dialog will pop up and ask for the password to this network (which is already saved). An additionally annoyance is that in gnome shell I'll get two copies of the dialog that I have to cancel, one is gnome shell themed (no window border etc...) and the other is just normal gnome themed. (Sometimes if I've been away from the computer for a while I will have multiple copies of this dialog up as its been trying to connect for a while resulting in at times 20 dialogs to cancel). Note, all the while I've been happily connected to the ethernet and have full network access. This is incredibly annoying and distracting, why doesn't ubuntu stop trying to connect to wifi if I'm on the ethernet (unless I want to broadcast my own network, but that's different)?

• When starting or log off/on, add'l panels show and some panel applets are duplicated

  After upgrading to 12.04 Gnome Classic amd64,every time I log on a new additional blank panel appears on the top and bottom panels - which I delete every time. In addition, the default panel applets are duplicated in the original panels. Also the panels in the second screen are empty (in addition to the wallpaper being hidden). Update: As suggested by fossfreedomm I created a new user and the same behavior occurred. I increased the height of the panels (2436) and the added panels did not change. If I don't remove the added panels and log off/on I get still another - they accumulate. If I switch user instead of logoff/logon, the add'l panel do not appear.
