I receive the following exception when attempting to load an XML file... XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument(); xmlDoc.LoadXml(record); Reference to undeclared entity 'eacute'. I was able to track down the proper ent file here. How do I tell XmlDocument to use this ent file when loading my XML file?

Anyway my idea below (in the nested if clause I want to check if the newly clicked item's processing data is already in the added Array Collection) is not working, but I assume there must be a better way to differiante if an click was made on a already selected row.   I'm in the middle of porting David Blei's original C implementation of Latent Dirichlet Allocation to Haskell, and I'm trying to decide whether to leave some of the low-level stuff in C. I know practically nothing about Haskell performance, and I'm not terribly interested in digging through Core or anything like that, since I can always just call the handful of math-intensive C functions through FFI. But I'm curious about whether there's low-hanging fruit that I'm missing—some kind of extension or library or annotation that I could use to speed up this numeric stuff without making it too ugly.

• What happens with TCP packets between two Socket.BeginReceive calls?

  I have a doubt about socket programming. I am developing a TCP packet sniffer. I am using Socket.BeginAccept, Socket.BeginReceive to capture every packet, but when a packet is received I have to process something. It is a fast operation, but would take some milliseconds, and then call BeginReceive again. My question is, what would happen if some packets are sent while I am processing, and haven't called BeginReceive? Are packets lost, or are they buffered internally? Is there a limit?

How do I add search date to the dataString so that I can use that var in my searchdata.php? In searchdata, I can do this $search_word=$_GET['search_word']; and use that var, but so far every time i attempt to alter the dataString, it breaks all the other functionality. Thanks!

• In javascript, how do I find out the name of a function from within that function?

  The title should make it clear. Is it possible from within a function to determine the name of that function? Basically, I'm adding some debugging code to a number of functions, and I'd like to be able to simply add the following line inside every function: if (global_debugOn) alert("Processing function " + function-name); How can I get 'function-name'? Yes, obviously I could simply type in the function name (after all I'm typing in the whole alert bit), but that's a hassle to do, especially if there is a nice simple way of retrieving it dynamically. Plus, as function names change during development, I'd like to keep it up-to-date... I hoped that maybe the arguments attribute might hold this (e.g. arguments[0], like in C), but I couldn't get it to work. I'm not even sure if arguments works anyway. Thanks! Rory

• Windows Azure worker roles: One big job or many small jobs?

  Is there any inherent advantage when using multiple workers to process pieces of procedural code versus processing the entire load? In other words, if my workflow looks like this: Get work from queue0 and do A Store result from A in queue1 Get result from queue 1 and do B Store result from B in queue2 Get result from queue2 and do C Is there an inherent advantage to using 3 workers who each do the entire process themselves versus 3 workers that each do a part of the work (Worker 1 does 1 & 2, worker 2 does 3 & 4, worker 3 does 5). If we only care about working being done (finished with step 5) it would seem that it scales the same way (once you're using at least 3 workers). Maybe the big job is better because workers with that setup have less bottleneck issues?

  I have some javascript code that includes an ANTLR-generated lexer and parser, and some associated syntax tree evaluation functionality. This code runs in the browser in my web app to support users who author code snippets which process scientific data. Now I'd like to do some additional background processing on the server using the same generated parser. I would prefer not to have to re-implement this stuff in C# and have multiple bits of code that did the exact same thing. Performance isn't as critical to me as eliminating duplication, since this is a background process. So, how can I call into my javascript code from C#? And how can I format my script so that it plays nicely with my .NET web app?

• Spring MVC with annotations: how to beget that method always is called

  hi, I'm currently migrating a project that is using Spring MVC without annotations to Spring MVC with annotations. This is causing less problems than expected but I did come across one issue. In my project I have set up an access mechanisme. Whether or not a User has access to a certain view depends on more than just the role of the User (e.g. it also depends on the status of the entity, the mode (view/edit), ...). To address this I had created an abstract parent controller which has a method hasAccess. This method calls also other methods like getAllowedEditStatuses which are here and there overridden by the child controllers. The hasAccess method gets called from the showForm method (below code was minimized for your readability): @Override protected ModelAndView showForm(final HttpServletRequest request, final HttpServletResponse response, final BindException errors) throws Exception { Integer id = Integer.valueOf(request.getParameter("ID")); Project project = this.getProject(id); if (!this.hasAccess(project, this.getActiveUser())) { return new ModelAndView("errorNoAccess", "code", project != null ? project.getCode() : null); } return this.showForm(request, response, project, errors); } So, if the User has no access to the view then he gets redirected to an error page. Now the 'pickle': how to set this up when using annotations. There no longer is a showForm or other method that is always called by the framework. My (and maybe your) first thought was: simply call this method from within each controller before going to the view. This would of course work but I was hoping for a nicer, more generic solution (less code duplication). The only other solution I could think of is preceeding the hasAccess method with the @ModelAttribute annotation but this feels a lot like raping the framework :-). So, does anyone have a (better) idea? thanks, Stijn

• Map Reduce Frameworks/Infrastructure

  Map Reduce is a pattern that seems to get a lot of traction lately and I start to see it manifest in one of my projects that is focused on an event processing pipeline (iPhone Accelerometer and GPS data). I needed to built a lot of infrastructure for this project, in fact it overweighs the logic code interacting with it by 2x. Some of the components I built where EventProcessors (with in- and output plus buffering, timing etc.), multiplexers and aggregators. This leads me to my question what the "common" required infrastrucutre for map reduce is. Since I am working with .Net a lot I can see map reduce infrastructure built into the Framework and language constructs. Functional languages support this paradigm per se. It seems every language can be used with map reduce, some have better support than others, others again are built around that concept (e.g. Go). And there are Frameworks like Apache Hadoop to support map reduce.

• Objective C -- property lists or text files?

  I need to import a list of about 40,000 words into my Iphone app. The list will be the same every time the app starts. It seems that property lists and text files are reasonable options. Any reason to prefer one over the other? For reasons I don't understand, finder says the property list on my mac is 1MB, while the text file is only 328K. The property list is an NSMutableArray of NSMutableArrays of NSStrings. The text file is a plain txt file. But amount of time the app takes to start up is also important. If I read in a text file, my app would have to do some simple processing on it each time it starts. Thanks.

  i am trying paperclip for the first time and followed this tutorial all is well until i use styles. this is the code has_attached_file :photo, :url => "/uploads/products/:id/:style/:basename.:extension", :path => ":rails_root/public/uploads/products/:id/:style/:basename.:extension", :styles => { :thumb=> "100x100#" } the error i see on the console is [paperclip] An error was received while processing: #<Paperclip::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError: C:/DOCUME~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/stream,2956,1.jpg is not recognized by the 'identify' command.> what does this mean? I have no idea what it means. Should i install this ImageMagick? I tried installing it as a plugin as per this page. This also returns an error that "plugin not found". what am i missing here?

• Trying to recognize _NSFaultingMutableSet as member of NSSet

  I'm trying to recognize the result of a generic query to a managed object as an NSSet. Currently the class returned is a member of _NSFaultingMutableSet, which is clearly related, but fails the isMemberOf:[NSSet class] and isKindOf:[NSSet class] calls. Given that Cocoa doesn't do a direct implementation of NSSet, it's not surprising that I've got some air in the pipes, but I'm wondering if I'm messing something obvious up or this requires a higher grade of kung-fu than I possess. • Netbean6.8: Cant deploy an app if I have Message Driven Bean

  I create an Enterprise Application CustomerApp that also generated two projects CustomerApp-ejb and CustomerApp-war. In the CustomerApp-ejb, I create a SessionBean call CustomerSessionBean.java as below. package com.customerapp.ejb; import javax.ejb.Stateless; import javax.ejb.LocalBean; import javax.persistence.EntityManager; import javax.persistence.PersistenceContext; @Stateless @LocalBean public class CustomerSessionBean { @PersistenceContext(unitName = "CustomerApp-ejbPU") private EntityManager em; public void persist(Object object) { em.persist(object); } } Now I can deploy CustomerApp-war just fine. But as soon as I create a Message Driven Bean, I cant deploy CustomerApp-war anymore. When I create NotificationBean.java (message driven bean), In the project destination option, I click add, and have NotificationQueue for the Destination Name and Destination Type is Queue. • IPC speed and compare

  I am trying to implement a real-time application which involves IPC across different modules. The modules are doing some data intensive processing. I am using message queue as the backbone(Activemq) for IPC in the prototype, which is easy(considering I am a totally IPC newbie), but it's very very slow. Here is my situation: I have isolated the IPC part so that I could change it other ways in future. I have 3 weeks to implement another faster version. ;-( IPC should be fast, but also comparatively easy to pick up I have been looking into different IPC approaches: socket, pipe, shared memory. However, I have no experience in IPC, and there is definitely no way I could fail this demo in 3 weeks... Which IPC will be the safe way to start with? Thanks. Lily

• Make MySQL database replication always use the most free node?

  We started using Multi-Master Replication Manager for MySQL, and I am wondering whether it is possible to to treat this setup like multi-symmetric processing: a process pops off the process queue, and the node (in this case a server) that is most free is selected for the job. It seems that what happens is, the service switches to a slave ONLY when it mysqld crashes or goes away. Is there a way to make database replication for MySQL act in more of a distributed manner? Maybe there is other software besides MMM that can do this? Is there a way to switch the reader role to another server whene mysqld slows down (rather than just when it fails)?

• How to make an entity out of a join table without primary key

  I'm trying to generate JPA entities out of an existing database having an "interesting" design. Database has a table called UserSet, which can have links to several other UserSets. There is a one to many relation between UserSets and LinkedUserSets. LinkedUserSets also has one to one relation to UserSets. I tried to generate a JPA Entity out of the database structure using Dali JPA Tools. The resulting entity Linkeduserset misses @Id or @EmbeddedId annotation and thus failes to compile. As the resulting entity contains only two @JoinColumns (which cannot be marked as @Id), I have not so far found a way around this issue. Database structure can not be modified in any way. Is there a way to overcome this somehow? • Appengine not liking my .jspx files

  I have a little app that runs fine on local dev appengine, but appengine itself is not processing my .jspx files. The jspx files are in WEB-INF so they should not be excluded by appengine (as a static resource) I am using Apache Tiles to define my views. • What are the pros and cons of using an in memory DB rather than a ThreadLocal

  We have been using ThreadLocal so far to carry some data so as to not clutter the API. However below are some of issues of using thread local that which I don't like: 1) Over the years the data items being carried in thread local has increased 2) Since we started using threads (for some light weight processing), we have also migrating these data to the threads in the pool and copying them back again I am thinking of using an in memory DB for these (we doesn't want to add this to the API). I wondering if this approach is good. What are the pros and cons? thx in advance.

• Graphics/Vision Interesting Topics

  Hello: I would like to do an interesting project for a computer graphics course. I know that there is a lot of literature out there (i.e. SIGGRAPH conference papers). I have a very large range of interest with regard to computer graphics (i.e. image processing, 3D modeling, rendering, animation). However, I've only taken computer vision/graphics for 2 semesters and thus don't have too much background experience, except for the class projects that I had to do. I've been looking through SIGGRAPH papers trying to see if there is anything that will be of interest to me but the literature is extremely vast. I was wondering if anyone has any topic suggestions, anything interesting that you ran across that you could recommend. I would prefer to do something fun yet slightly challenging (not really interested in making a shooter game). If this question does not belong here, I apologize and please let me know where I should move it. Thanks!

  Input Server - files of type jpg,tif, raw,png, mov come in via FTP Each file needs to be watermarked, if applicable, and meta data added to the file Then each file needs to be moved to an orders directory where an order file is generated and then packaged as zip file and moved to processing server. The file names are of [orderid_userid_guid].[jpg|tif|mov|png...] As I expect the volume to grow I dont want to work on one file at a time and move it through the work flow. I would prefer multi threaded/asynchronous if possible..

• Should Python 2.6 on OS X deal with multiple easy-install.pth files in $PYTHONPATH?

  I am running ipython from sage and also am using some packages that aren't in sage (lxml, argparse) which are installed in my home directory. I have therefore ended up with a $PYTHONPATH of $HOME/sage/local/lib/python:$HOME/lib/python Python is reading and processing the first easy-install.pth it finds ($HOME/sage/local/lib/python/site-packages/easy-install.pth) but not the second, so eggs installed in $HOME/lib/python aren't added to the path. On reading the off-the-shelf site.py, I cannot for the life of me see why it's doing this. Can someone enlighten me? Or advise how to nudge Python into reading both easy-install.pth files? Consolidating both into one .pth file is a viable workaround for now, so this question is mostly for curiosity value.
