• Printing documents on HP printer very slow

  I have a strange problem with HP drivers. I have configured a HP printer 2025dn with LAN connection, on 3 pc, using the cd rom of HP driver. All works well, but sometimes for certain documents the time for printing is very slow and long. I observe during this situation, in task manager, a process called rundll32.exe loads CPU at 100%. If I kill that process the printer starts printing fast the document in the queue. I wondering the reason of this strange behaviour.

• Chromium OS Lime installation confusion

  I Used to download Chromium Vanilla build Virtual-box image from hexxeh. recently i wanted to try Lime build which only gives a .img file. I used the mentioned Windows Image Writer (link given on the lime website.) and a 8GB Transcend Website. When i tried to boot from pen-drive, the screen only flashed and nothing happened. Now when i tried to access my pendrive, it shows only 0.99 gb capacity. What happened wrong. How can i recover my pendrive. I tried to create vdi using VBoxManage.exe convertdd chromiumos.img chromiumos.vdi command given in This link. But it is not running on VBox either.

• Explorer forgetting how to cut and paste files

  My Windows XP (SP3) machine (at work) occasionally "forgets" how to cut-and-paste files in Explorer - if I cut or copy a file then go to paste it elsewhere, the "paste" and "paste shortcut" menu items are greyed out. The keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+X/Ctrl+C,Ctrl+V) don't work either, and neither does Drag-and-Drop - clicking and dragging a file/folder doesn't change the pointer and letting go doesn't drop the item anywhere. Restarting the explorer.exe process usually fixes the problem, but sometimes I need to do a full reboot.   I'm running IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I've installed PHP Version 5.2.14 using Microsoft Web Platform Installer. I've created a virtual directory and a file with which I can browse it and it returns all the PHP information just fine. I'm trying to install MantisBT, and when I copy all the file to my virtual directory and browse index.php I receive the following error detail: Error Summary HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. • How to disable Utility Manager (Windows Key + U)

  How do I disable the Windows Key+U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it*. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell. This removes most Windows Key hotkeys but the Win+U still pops up the manager app. Update: Things I've tried and don't work: NoWinKeys registry setting - this only affects explorer hotkeys; Renaming utilman.exe - program reappears next login; Third party software - not really an option, these machines are audited by the clients and additional, third party software would be unlikely to be accepted. Also, the proedure needs to be reasonably straightforward - this has to be done by field service engineers to existing machines (machines currently in Russia, Holland, France, Spain, Ireland and USA). * The hole is via the internet options in the help viewer the utility app links to.

• Let task explorer always run with realtime priority

  I have replaced task manager by process explorer from sysinternals. I would like this to always run at realtime, so that I can easily get it open when my system is really slow. I have noticed that it can take a while to start this program at those moments. I have gone over the different options mentioned on SU. I can't change the shortcut, it immediately opens the .exe. I also can't use the task manager plugins/extensions, as I'm not using task manager. Any idea what I could do? Preferably without installing any other software. That is, if the priority would have any effect on starting the program.

• IIS not using available memory?

  Recently launched an ASP.NET site running on a single 32-bit WS2003 box (SQL on a separate server). The server has 4GB intalled, 3GB available. According to task manager, the w3wp.exe process is only using between 200-600MB. The site has tens of thousands of pages and makes heavy use of page output caching, so I would expect it to use a lot more of the available memory. The app pool isn't set to throttle memory usage. Is there anything else that might be limiting the amount of memory that IIS takes?

• Outlook Express hangs when selecting multiple emails

  I'm using Outlook Express (6, I think) on Windows XP. Lately, it has been hanging. Sometimes this happens at startup (right after the main window with all the panes loads) and sometimes when selecting many emails (sometimes as low as three emails at once, sometimes at ten, it's not a fixed number). When this happens, msimn.exe starts to use 98-100% CPU and RAM usage shoots up very quickly, reaching hundreds of megabytes in half a minute. The message pane goes gray instead of showing the message contents. As I said, this sometimes happens right after the main window loads, sometimes when selecting many emails at once. I tried backing up everything, deleting the identities, creating a new one and restoring, but this still happens.

• Delete temporary files from batch script in xp

  I'm looking for a good batch script that would quickly find & clean all the known safe temporary folders/files from Windows (as many variants as possible) machines (e.g. the windows temp folder, all users IE temp folders, etc.). I'm fond of UI tools like CCleaner (over Cleanmgr.exe), but when I'm trying to clean several computers quickly and/or with minimal involvement, it would be nice to have a script. Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

• Google Chrome and kerberos authentication against Apache

  I've managed to get kerberos authentication to work now with Apache and Likewise Open but so far, Google Chrome doesn't seem to play fair. Unless I start it with chrome.exe --auth-server-whitelist="*company.com" it does only pop-up a login window but will not accept any credentials at all. As far as I know, the --auth-server-whitelist option should only be used when trying to get Single-Sign-On (SSO) to work, but if you are fine with a log-in window it should work directly out of the box, but so far it doesn't.   Yesterday on a computer of a friend a strange thing happened. after booting the ports fo http, https and ftp are closed but e-mail is still working. in the control panel the windows firewall seems active even if he tries to deactivate it. I have a suspision that it is the faul of norton internet security 2010, we have tried to uninstall it, but the uninstallation did not work. when using the removal tool from symantec it just goes to 23% and then it crashes. the process ccSvcHst.exe is still running. How can I safely remove the rest of Norton Internet Security? Edit: Norton Internet Security 2010 is sucesfully removed, but still no connectivity...

  I have a hard drive which I removed from my HP Laptop and plugged into my Macbook. Windows 7 started well and then installed graphic driver but the others (sound, touchpad) were not recognized by the operating system. What should I do? Edit from OP Sorry for writing here. I don't know why but my account is not associated with this post. First, I have Tiger CD but problem is neigher my Macbook, nor my Desktop PC can read the CD. I have downloaded Driver's from Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL74) but it's not working. I mean, when I double click the exe file, It gets listed in process list int task manager but after 5 seconds, I disappears. But somehow, Windows recognized my audio device and installed its driver. Microphone is ok but red light is on.

• USER_LOGIN audit log with incorrect auid value?

  We have a CentOS 6.2 x86_64 system that's logging what looks to be erroneous audit information. We were receiving alerts for failed logins by a user who wasn't actually trying to log in. After some diagnosis, we figured out that the source of the events is our tool that periodically checks to see if SSH is answering. When that happens, we see this log this entry: type=USER_LOGIN msg=audit(1340312224.011:489216): user pid=28787 uid=0 auid=501 ses=8395 subj=unconfined_u:system_r:sshd_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 msg='op=login acct=28756E6B6E6F776E207A01234567 exe="/usr/sbin/sshd" hostname=? addr=127.0.0.1 terminal=ssh res=failed' This is the entry we get whenever there is an incomplete ssh connection, but usually the auid is the same as the ses= value. For some reason, on this system, it's using a particular user's auid, regardless of the login user. For example, ssh'ng to this system as [email protected] and cancelling before providing a password generates this error. Attempting to log to an unrelated account with a bogus password will also create an entry with the incorrect auid value.

• Can't change current working directory to external drive in Windows

  I'm trying to run a program located on an external USB disk using the Windows command prompt. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit (running in VMWare Workstation 8.0.) Here's what happens: I plug in the USB disk and it appears as drive letter 'E' in My Computer. I launch cmd from the start menu. I notice the prompt displays C:\Users\Tom> I type cd E:\ I notice the prompt displays C:\Users\Tom> (cd also yields C:\Users\Tom>) I can explore the drive using explorer.exe just fine, and it is connected according to VMWare Workstation. What am I doing wrong?

• Why does my CPU Usage reach 100% too often?

  I'm using a dual-core processor and often see my CPU usage reaches 100%. I realize this may happen if I'm running too much applications, so when I know the computer starts to run slowly, I start to close my applications. I usually run 4-5 applications simultaneously. Usually those are: web browser (Google Chrome), Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, XAMPP, and Windows Task Manager. Usually I close tabs in my Chrome first, because I often browse the net with about 20 tabs/4 windows open, so I presume that would take much memory (bad habit, I know). But even after closing Chrome's tabs or closing other applications, my CPU Usage often stays at high percentage - 72% at best, 100% at worst. I check the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager and usually found the System, System Idle Process, or services.exe taking the highest CPU process (could reach 60). Why is this happening? And is there any solution? EDIT I have T2250 @ 1,73 Ghz and 2.5 GB RAM

  Newbie questoin but I can't seem to figure it out. Using cwrsync which in turn calls ssh.exe from a Windows Vista box to Ubuntu. For below, user in ubuntu is 'linuxuser' and user on Windows box is 'winuser' - remote box is 'linuxhost' and windows box is 'winhost' Exported keys such that on the remote box /home/linuxuser/.ssh/authorized_keys is correctly populated. Problem is when I launch ssh it tries to write to /home/winuser/.ssh instead of /cygdrive/home/users/winuser/.ssh as below. c:\Program Files (x86)\cwRsync\binssh linuxuser@linuxhost Could not create directory '/home/winuser/.ssh'.   To be sure nobody will answer me with advice on not trying to terminate critical (system) processes - I'm relatively experienced in programming and Windows in general - I'd know what I'm doing so far. So there are these processes that can't be terminated with taskkill - system processes in general. But there also is, for example my Anti Virus program that makes itself "unterminateable". How can I access and mainly terminate system processes under windows? (kill.exe by Microsoft doesn't work) How do processes like anti-virus programs protect themselves? How can you turn them off again, then?

  I have just installed SBS 2008 R2 Standard on VMware Workstation 9 along with Windows 7 Pro N. Both are activated and running fine. I have followed the steps to configure SBS 2008 and am now at the point where I'm to add a computer to the domain. Here is where the problem begins. I have gone through the steps of using the webinterface. On the client I downloaded Launcher.exe. I then run it and get the error "Check computer requirements - Failed" (translated from swedish): "This computer doesn't reach the requirements for connecting to the network." I have also checked the time settings and they are correct. Any clue as to what this problem could be?

• Identify an instance of Google Chrome by PID

  While working I generally need around 40 windows open at a time and run 100-200 processes. When memory constraints become an issue, I start picking off the processes that are the most resource intensive and disposable. Often these are chrome.exe. It would be helpful to be able to match a particularly memory-hungry instance of chrome to it's PID so I can selectively close it. That is, if I knew what the page title it is currently open to, I could choose whether it lives or dies. I've tried Process Explorer to no avail. Any ideas?

• Creating an app shortcut in Windows 7 XP Mode

  I have a VERY old legacy app that I've managed to move from machine to machine; the installer for it doesn't actually work under newer versions of Windows, but I was able to track down the registry changes and DLL registrations necessary to make it work. I'm able to create a desktop icon in my XP mode environment, and the program works... but I'd like to add an icon to the Windows 7 menu, and run the program in semi-native mode. For example, the icon for Microsoft Security Essentials in XP mode has the following target: %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchVMSal "Windows XP Mode" "||232f633" "Microsoft Security Essentials" Now, the only part of that that seems to be "magic" is "||232f633" - does anyone have any idea where that comes from, or how to identify the correct equivalent for an arbitrary program? I gather that, had the program been installed normally through a .msi file (or WISE, or NSIS, or what have you), this id would have been generated automagically... Thanks for any insights!
