• System monitor network speed monitor not working for LAN but works for my Wi-fi

  I'm on Ubuntu 13.10. I generally use wi-fi to connect to the internet. But Yesterday my wi-fi router occurred some problem and now it's out for warranty. So temporarily I'm using LAN. System monitor displayed the network speed correctly when I was in wi-fi. But now it's not showing any kinda network speed in System Monitor. I checked the preferences opption but couldn't find a way. I also checked "ksysguard"(KDE's system monitor) and conky. None of them working. How can i solve this? I'm attaching a screenshot to clear the problem.

• How to recover a website's lost robot.txt?

  I found my website in the Wayback Machine a few months ago, but today I've tried again and now it tells me it can't find robots.txt. My old webhost stopped paying for their servers back in August without any notice. I was going to do a backup the day it happened. Is there a way just to find the text? I have the old IP, images, but nothing else. None of the big search engines have caches anymore, and I already looked in the cache of three of my Macs with nothing to be found.

• 2D Planet Gravity

  I'm trying to make a simple game where a spaceship is launched and then its path is effected by the gravity of planets. Similar to this game: http://sciencenetlinks.com/interactives/gravity.html I wish to know how to replicate the effect the planets have on the spaceship in this game so a spaceship can 'loop' around a planet to change direction. I have managed to achieve some bogus results where the spaceship loops in a huge ellipse around the planet or is only slightly affected by the gravity of a planet using Vectors. Thanks in advance. p.s I have plenty of coding experience just none to do with game dev.

• Fastest way to get up to speed on webapp development with ASP.NET?

  I'm trying to get better at C# ASP.NET 3.5 development (...no none of that MVC stuff :), and fast! My boss gave me a book to read on it from Wrox, but the thing reads like a history novel, telling you how things worked as far back as ASP.NET 1.0; The web application we are developing is completely in ASP.NET 3.5 so I don't need to read through any of the history (maybe I'm wrong about that...but I don't really have the time to read about that...) Do you have any suggestions for a faster (book, series of tutorials) to come up to speed on it? I'd like to learn about UI components, database access, etc... P.S. In a previous position I was an JSP/J2EE developer (and I used MVC all the time! :-D) P.S.S. I did take a course on it in 2008 at some point, but it seemed all very pointy and clickly. I wanna learn the code stuff! The how it works, and where the events are!

• Automatically select headphones when plugged in

  When I plug headphones into my desktop computer, they are not automatically selected for output, instead all sound still goes through my S/PDIF output to the stereo. The headphones alternative is added in the sound settings, and I have to manually select it as output device. $ cat /proc/asound/pcm 00-00: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1 00-01: ALC898 Digital : ALC898 Digital : playback 1 00-02: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : capture 2 I have done a Google search, as well as search askubuntu.com, but none of the answers in the hits I found seems to help. Also, after listening with the headphones and then unplug them, the previous output is not automatically selected, so I have no sound at all then. I have to manually select the correct output in the settings.

• How to share internet connection and making the client accessible over the lan

  I've a Pc with Ubuntu 14.04 connected to a linkys router through wlan0, and I'd like to share internet connection to an AVR with ethernet port. This is pretty simple if only internet connection is required for the AVR: actually, creating an ethernet connection as "Shared with other computers" and setting up the AVR IP configuration to use DHCP works just fine, but that makes a private class A lan between those two; of course ip addresses are not in the range of the LAN the router is managing. So, I tried with static ip on both sides (Ubuntu eth0 and AVR ip). Tried many combinations, none of them work to provide Internet access to the AVR and at the same time make the AVR accessible over the network through his static ip address (say, 192.168.0.110). Any tips around to share??

• Making XNA Play Nice With 3DS Max, Boundiing Spheres

  I'm using 3DS Max 2010 with the KW x-porter plugin, which outputs a .X file (just downloaded the very latest version). Note, that models I make in Milkshape don't seem to be having these problems. I've also tried to export an FBX file from 3DS Max 2010 and have been getting similar results. What are your suggestions in terms of exporting *.3DS models to a workable XNA form? What tools do you use?.   I downloaded Multiple times Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.04.1. And tried to install them using first Virtual box if it work I move to install on actual drive. I dont knw but 12.04.1 dont wanna install on my system So i downloaded 12.04 release and installed it on Virtual box and it installed perfectly then i moved on to install it as Dual OS along with windows 7 but the installer crashed just like the other version and I dont know what the heck is the problem with ubuntu OS Installers. Ubuntu really need to work on their Installer. I love Ubuntu but such things are really headache. At first I thought image was not properly so i burned on another dvd but alas no use same stupid error. Now there are 3 images of 12.04 and 2 images of 12.04.1 and none of them is working on my system. And wasted two dvds. Does anyone know how to solve this problemo.

• How to remove desktop environments?

  I installed few environments that I wanted to try out on Ubuntu 12.04, but none of them worked at all. It could be that I installed them all at the same time, meaning the OS didn't get a chance to work everything out, but either way, they didn't work. I would now like to remove them. The one's that I installed are Fluxbox, OpenBox, XFCE, and MATE. I installed them through the help of this site. Everything seemed to have been working properly until I actually tried to use the shells and nothing loaded at all. Except for Fluxbox, I think that one worked. I want to know of any way to repair or perhaps just remove the packages entirely. I might have already removed them because I did the apt-get remove command on all of them, but they were still in the list on the login screen.

• Improving mdadm RAID-6 write speed

  Hi! I have a mdadm RAID-6 in my home server of 5x1Tb WD Green HDDs. Read speed is more than enough - 268 Mb/s in dd. But write speed is just 37.1 Mb/s. (Both tested via dd on 48Gb file, RAM size is 1Gb, block size used in testing is 8kb) Could you please suggest why write speed is so low and is there any ways to improve it? • LVM volumes don't appear in Nautilus since upgrading to 11.10

  up to Ubuntu 11.04 all my LVM volumes used to show up in the sidebar of Nautilus as devices available to be mounted, alongside software RAID volumes. after upgrading to 11.10 last week, i can only see software RAID volumes (i can mount/umount them) but i can't find a way to make Nautilus show LVM volumes (on both my main desktop systems). i guess this must be a change in gio/gvfs but i can't find any settings for this - anyone has experienced this issue upon upgrading to Gnome 3.0/3.2 and has figured out how to make LVM volumes appear in Nautilus' sidebar? i can mount the volumes manually ok from the command line. none of them is in /etc/fstab.

• How to change eclipse font sizes

  I'm trying to reduce the font sizes used in Eclipse. I've read several notes talking about how to do this, but none of them have made a difference. Obviously, changing it in Eclipse preferences doesn't do it. The common answers about using "Appearance-Fonts" doesn't work, because there is no "Fonts" tab. I believe I saw one person say that the "Fonts" tab isn't supposed to be there anymore. The next suggestion is to install MyUnity and change the font settings there. That appeared to change the fonts used in other apps, like gnome-terminal and window headers, but it still has had no effect on Eclipse.

• Flash Webcam non responsive Ubuntu 11.10

  I've got the same problem as this gentleman: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+question/176541 Where the webcam settings / access does not work at all / is completely unresponsive in Ubuntu 11.10. I've tried webcam access in Facebook, Google+, my own code + a number of tutorials/demos and none work. What happens is the settings dialogue is completely unresponsive. Clicking tabs or buttons does nothing. In the question linked to a suggested answer is to run Unity 2D. Unfortunately this does not work for me (the exact same thing happens). I've also tried Gnome 3 which also does not work. Note that it is only the webcam settings that don't work. YouTube videos and annoying banners work just fine. Does anyone know of a workaround for this (except going back to 11.04) or if they've fixed this in 12.04? - also, are any of you experiencing the same thing?

• Do employers prefer software engineering over CS majors?

  I'm in grad school at a university that was one of the first to have a software engineering accredited program. My undergrad is in CS. An employer recently recruited at our university and hired 5 SE majors. None of them were CS. Do employers prefer software engineering majors? The reason I ask is because I can focus on many different areas during my graduate studies and really want to take the classes that will help me land a great job. Right now I'm either going to use CUDA and parallelize an advanced ray-tracer for a graduate project or do research on non-photo-realistic rendering in augmented reality. Pursuing these would leave very little SE classes in my schedule. If I went the software engineering route, I would probably either do research into data-oriented programming or software design complexity. Sometimes I think when I'm 40 and look back will it matter at all? For some reason I'm thinking not.

Often, I’ve heard web managers say that their segments aren’t well understood yet, so they can’t really deliver personalized online experiences that are meaningful. This lack of complete understanding means that they don't really bother to try. But, I don’t think you necessarily need to have an elaborate segmentation and targeting strategy already in place to start delivering a more relevant online customer experience. Sometimes it helps to think of how segmentation and targeting might solve some of the challenges your sites visitors are currently experiencing on your web presence, rather than doing nothing and waiting until a fully baked segmentation strategy lands in your inbox.  For example, perhaps you have a broad and varied service offering that makes it difficult for site visitors to easily find the solutions that are most relevant for them.  How can segmentation and targeting help solve this problem?  Or maybe it’s like the airline I described in Monday’s post where the special deals featured on the home page are only relevant to site visitors from a couple of cities.  Couldn’t segmentation and targeting help them to highlight offers on their home page that are relevant to a larger share of their site visitors? Your early segmentation and targeting efforts do not need to be complicated.  There are simple ways to start delivering a more relevant online customer experience, even if you’re dealing with anonymous site visitors.  These include targeting content to site visitors based on: Referral: Deliver targeted content to your site visitors that is based on where they came from or the search term they used to find your site Behavior:  Deliver content to your site visitors that is related or similar to content they’ve clicked on already Location:  Deliver content your site visitors that is most relevant for their geographic location (this would solve that pesky airline home page problem described above) So as you can see, there really are some very simple ways in which you can start improving your online customer experience using very basic segmentation and targeting methods.  One thing to keep in mind as you start to define you segmentation and targeting strategy is that there are many different types of attributes or combinations of attributes upon which you can base your segmentation and targeting strategy.  In addition to referral, behavior and location, other attributes that you should consider are: Profile Information:  What profile information do you know about this customer already?  Perhaps they provided some information on their interests and preferences when they first registered with your site. Time:  What time is it and how does that impact what my site visitors are looking for or trying to do? Demographics: What are my site visitors’ ages, incomes or ethnicities? Which attributes you select to include in your segmentation strategy will depend on your unique business needs and objectives.  Attributes such as behavior or referral may not be the most important targeting criteria depending on your situation. For example, if you’re a newspaper you might know that certain visitors are sports fans based on their profile information.  You can create a segment for sports fans and target sports related content to that segment of your readership online.  Or perhaps, a reader is browsing stories that are related to politics; you can use that visitor’s behavior to assign him or her to a segment for those interested in politics. From there you can recommend more stories to that visitor based on their interest in politics. For an airline, the visitor’s location may be a more important attribute. By detecting the visitor’s location, you can assign them to an appropriate segment and then target special flights and offers to them based on their likely departure airport. As you can see, there are many practical ways that you can start improving the experience your customers receive on your web presence using fairly basic segmentation and targeting techniques. • How to change fonts using gnome-tweak-tool?

  As a non-techie type user, I've managed to find the "Advanced Settings" option in the "other" menu listing, which is good (sort of). In the past, I've routinely installed the windows fonts from my windows partition. Now even though I have the msttcorefonts package installed, and all of the .ttf windows fonts installed (as far as I can tell), it doesn't matter whether I log out and back in (which in the past has brought up some of the stuff I've wanted installed), or even if I just restart the Ubuntu completely from boot, none of them are listed. So how do I make the gnome tweek tool see the directory with all the fonts in it please ?

• Markdown, LaTeX combined in WYSIWYG editor. Is there any?

  I really like the way markdown is implemented in SE bunch of sites, where I can easily write code blocks, performing formatting or even use latex on some of sites like writing $\pi$. I also like how this online editor looks and feels. But it's all online. Is there any offline WYSIWYG analogs of notepag or WMD in Ubuntu that optionally supports pdf as an output format? Both markdown and latex desired. I desire to simultaneously use Markdown and LaTeX. I'm planing to use an editor for writing some technical stuff with math, but it's annoying to be constantly in "LaTeX-mode". So it would be awesome to immerse in LaTeX when I need formulas and use markdown when I need to speak on natural language. UPD. Almost all answers was quite useful, but none of them answers directly on my question. I'll accept @N.N. answer as a most complete.

I cannot tell you how many times I removed all devices, removed stored passwords, killed all processes of u1, logged out and back in online...and still, the tick in the file browser (Synchronize this folder) is loading and loading and loading. Also, I have logged out, rebooted countless times. And this is after me somehow managing to get the u1 preferences to finally "connect" again. I have also checked the status of your services, and none are close to what I am experiencing. And I have checked the suggested related questions above! So please, just confirm whether it is a problem on my side, or a problem on your side.

• Google Analytics - Unable to get GA Tracking

  We've been using GA for a few years with no probs. About 2-3 weeks ago we tried to clean up some of our tracking and on one of our profiles, it's not working anymore (since oct 10.) First, some context then some GA Debugging code. 1. Context. We have the following setup: different root domains AND different sub-domains on one of the root domains. www.website.com www.website.com.au www.anotherWebsite.com foo.website.com baa.website.com So what we're doing is the following: each root domain and each sub-domain get their own tracking code. This way we can allow separate people (from outside our company) to access only their own data. Eg. a manager for foo.website.com can only see data related to that domain .. and see data on the other domains. Have a last account which is the SUM of all the domains. this is for us. so we can see total numbers. So to do this, we have two trackers that fire off, on the page. the individual accounts all work fine - they seem to be tracking data ok. the 'global' account is not working and this gives us the = Tracking Not Installed error. This has been going on since oct 10. So the wait 24/48/72 hours thing is waaaaay over. 2. GA Debug code. Installing GA Debug chrome extension gives the following output. I've tried to hide anything that could be considered secret. UA-XXXXX34-1 == Global account (which isn't working any more). • How to reset settings when Unity won't finish booting?

  I have a new 12.04 installation and I messed things up after trying to move /home to an NTFS partition, which I later learned was a bad idea. I removed references to the NTFS partition on fstab and created new users on the ext4 / partition. Now I can't get Unity to start up properly for any user. I get the GUI with only three Launch icons (none of which are clickable) and no bar at the top. The keyboard seems to the nonfunctional after I enter my credentials. The interesting thing is that I can boot when I go through recovery mode and select resume. I wonder whether I am creating the new users properly. What is the correct protocol for doing so in order to ensure that they can run Unity?

• Is there a simpler way to create a borderless window with XNA 4.0?

  When looking into making my XNA game's window border-less, I found no properties or methods under Game.Window that would provide this, but I did find a window handle to the form. I was able to accomplish what I wanted by doing this: IntPtr hWnd = this.Window.Handle; var control = System.Windows.Forms.Control.FromHandle( hWnd ); var form = control.FindForm(); form.FormBorderStyle = System.Windows.Forms.FormBorderStyle.None; I don't know why but this feels like a dirty hack. Is there a built-in way to do this in XNA that I'm missing?
