• Can we configure windows 2008 DHCP server to not ignore the broadcast falg of DHCP requests?

  We have a Cisco WAP4410N access point that does not relay broadcast packets from the wired network to the wireless clients when the network is secured by WPA2. This cause problem with Windows server's DHCP server that respond to DHCP request by broadcasting it's OFFER instead of Unicasting it like it's asked by Windows (and Android and iOS) clients. When we had a Windows 2003 server we configured the server not to ignore the broadcast flag (following these instructions) and it solved the problem. Now we upgraded our servers to Windows 2008 servers and the problem is back. Unfortunately, it seems Windows server 2008 ignore the IgnoreBroadcastFlag parameter. Is there any other way to make sure that Windows Server 2008 respond to DHCP requests using Unicast instead of broadcast? mp

• Siteminder webagent installation failed

  Hi All, I have tried to install a 32 bit Netegrity(CA) siteminder web agent on 64 bit Windows server 2003. The IIS server is V 6.0 and so it is also 64 bit. But the problem is while configuring the agent it is showing metabase error. Previously 64 bit web agent was installed on the same server and removed. The IIS V 6.0 is also reinstalled on the server. But after that when I tried to install 32 bit siteminder web agent, it is showing an error as said above. Is it possible to install a 32 bit siteminder web agent on 64 bit IIS? Please help me as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

  I started using the old confbot python conference script in 2005 for my family. This essentially implements an IRC like conference room over Google Talk (or any Jabber/XMPP server). It has significantly increased family communication, and has become rather indispensable due to this. Recently it's begun to have severe problems (people can't see each other in the conference room) which has nearly killed the usefulness of it. Before I develop my own software or debug confbot (probably not - it uses an older jabber library that hasn't been updated since 2003) I wanted to see what other solutions exist that meet our needs: Supports Google Talk (Sorry, I'm not going to try to convince everyone involved to move to a new IM or other client) Free and open source (ideal, but not required) Runs on Windows (Not a web service run by someone else) Implements basic functionality such as kick/ban, emotes Remembers who joined the conference room across restarts Obeys Do Not Disturb and Busy status Archives all activity -Adam

• Problem with regsvr32 on Windows Server 2008

  Hi all! I am attempting to register a basic COM dll on a Windows Server 2008 standard box. I run regsvr32 capicom.dll and it reports DllRegisterServer in capicom.dll succeeded. This is the same process we've used for years on Windows Server 2003. Sadly, when I attempt to create the object via a very very basic Microsoft vbscript example Set oStore = CreateObject("CAPICOM.Store") it throws a "ActiveX component can't create object" error. Thinking maybe it was a problem with this dll, I tried a few other DLLs we use with the same result. I tried using the regsvr32 in system, system32, and syswow64 all with the same result. I don't know too much about the differences between each of those, but figured it was worth a shot. The dll is being stored on the d:\ and seems to have correct permissions (though that'd be a different error altogether). Thanks to any help or thoughts you might have!

  Let me explain the problem. My system is connected to a network and 'was' having XP installed in it. Recently i formatted the system and installed windows server 2003 and added the machine to the network. Everything is working fine like mapping the network drives, pinging the machines etc. But i've the following problems. I'm not able to do a remote desktop connection to another system in the network. Some systems in the network is able to do a remote desktop to my machine. But not all. If i host any web service in my system i'm not able to connect it from any other machine in the network. I've already configured the Remote Desktop to accept connections. Any ideas? NLV

• Windows Web Server 2008 R2 Server Core local password complexity

  How can I disable the local user account password complexity settings on Windows 2008 R2 "Server Core"? I am trying to migrate our windows 2003 web server to windows 2008 R2. I am trying to see if I can use the "Server Core" install, and it has been a very internet search intensive experience. What I can't find out how to do is to find out how to disable password complexity for local user accounts. While our user account generator currently creates nice strong passwords, there was a time when this was not the case and unfortunately forcing the users to change their password is not an option at this time. • Microsoft Outlook hangs when switching input language

  Hello, I have two keyboard languages, Swedish and Amerikan English. Normally, I switch language by hitting [alt]+[shift] and it works like a charm. However, suddenly Microsoft Outlook has started to hang whenever I try to switch keyboard input language. Whenever i hit [alt]+[shift] or use the menu to switch language Outlook will hang indefinitely not responding. Why? and what can I do about it? I have English Windows 2000 and Outlook 2003 with the Google Search Desktop plugin.

• Remote desktop is slow when connecting to a computer which is part of a domain

  Hey all, We have two windows 2003 machines, one is a DC and another is joined to the domain of the DC. These machines are not locally available to us so we have to remote desktop into them. When we first got the machines remote desktop was blazing as the machines are only a couple of miles away. I then installed AD and setup routing and remote access, I also setup DNS on the DC. Now when I try remote Desktop into the machine which is part of the domain (not the DC) it is painfully slow! Remote Desktop onto the DC is also noticeably slower! Another problem is that our FTP to the DC has also become slow. I don't know what other information I can provide, as I am new to Sys Admin (moving over from development). The speed should be fast as these machines are only a couple of miles away. Any help / suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks Peuge

• Powershell or WMI to pull Printer Properties and Additional Drivers?

  What I am trying to accomplish: Use a powershell script (WMI or cmdlets directly, or a combination) to query a 2003 or 2008 server with the PrintServer role, enumerate the printers shared, then list the drivers in use for that printer and specifically if an x86 or x64 driver is being used (or both). I've looked at Win32_Printer, Win32_PrinterDriver, Get-Printer, etc. None of these seem to be able to tell me about x64 drivers or when multiple platform-specific drivers are loaded. Something like: gwmi win32_printer -computername lebowski | %{$name = $_.name $supported = $_.getrelated('Win32_PrinterDriver') | select supportedplatform, driverpath, version Write-Host $name return $supported } Produces the following: PCLOADLETTER supportedplatform : Windows NT x86 driverpath : C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\RIC54Dc.DLL version : 3 However the problem being that particular printer also has x64 drivers loaded. I really don't want to manually check the properties tab of 100 printers just to see if they have the x64 driver loaded.

• Jobs stuck in Print Queue on print server

  Hello, I have a Server 2003 machine acting as a print server for about 20 printers. There is 1 printer which we are having issues with and it has 104 documents in its queue. I have attempted the "Cancel All Documents" and tried to manually cancel individual documents without success. The print jobs state "Deleting - Sent to printer" under their status. It has been in this state for about 2 hours. I do not believe restarting the spool is an option without effecting the other printers and we have Hold printer for a specific non windows printing friendly application, in which I can not loose the jobs for.   hi there, Im used to using windows server 2003 but decided to get a Vista web edition for IIS7 and to run our MVC applications on. I have installed copSSH that i use for SFTP, and when i upload my files i am unable to change persmissions or take ownership or anything when logged in as an administrator. when i try to go to permissions i get: The permissions on uploads are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. and all permissions are the grayed out. i have tried to use icacls to reset ownership and also tried to give myself full control through icacls however all attempts are met with a access is denied message and failed processing 669 files. all i wish to do is set up write and delete permissions on an upload folder for a CMS systems admin area, but i am a week into looking into this and i am still no wiser. Please could someone give some sound advice so i can get this running smooth thanks p.s i have added the copSSH notes as i think that when i SFTP the files to the server, this may somehow have some involvement in messing up permissions

• SSRS 2008 & MOSS 2007 Alternate Access Mapping Problem

  I have a MOSS Server with SSRS 2008 Ent Ed configured in Sharepoint Integrated mode. It all works well as http://servername:88/ on the default host header. MOSS works fine using the external host name too on the intranet AAM field (http://site.domain.com/) however SSRS fails on the same url with the message: An unexpected error occurred while connecting to the report server. Verify that the report server is available and configured for SharePoint integrated mode. I think the issue is further complicated by our Windows 2008 infrastructure in which we've never been able to get SPN's working for Kerberos. SQL Server however, is on the same machine so I dont think it is a kerberos double hop issue. Extra info MOSS/SSRS are on a VM running Windows 2003 R2 VM is hosted on Win2008 HyperV DC is on Windows 2008 SBS

  My current setup has: a pfsense firewall with 4 NICs and potential for a 5th 1 48 port 3com switch, 1 24 port HP switch, willing to purchase more subnet 1) edge (Windows Server 2003 for vpn through routing and remote access) and subnet 2) LAN with one WS2003 domain controller/dns/wins etc., one WS2008 file server, one WS2003 running Vipre anti-virus and Time Limit Manager which controls client computer use, and about 50 pcs I am looking for a network design for separating clients and staff. I could do two totally isolated subnets, but I'm wondering if there is anything in between so that staff and clients could share some resources such as printers and anti-virus servers, staff could access client resources, but not vice versa. I guess what I'm asking is can you configure subnets and/or vlans like this: 1)edge for vpn 2)services available to all other internal networks 3)staff which can access services and clients 4)clients which can access services but not staff By access/non-access, I mean stronger separation than domain usernames and passwords.

• Project Server 2007 install issue - ProjectEventService won't start

  Trying to install PS2007 with SP1 on Server 2003. The install goes fine, but when running the SharePoint Configuration Wizard, it fails at stage 6 of 12 with the error: Failed to register SharePoint Services. An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown. Additional exception information: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. From the PSCDiagnostics log: Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. --- System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. The ProjectEventService (Microsoft Office Project Server Event) won't even start manually using the Network Service account. Starting the service with a domain account works, but subsequently running the Config Wizard causes the service to be removed and re-provisioned to run using the Network Service account, which again fails. Presumably Network Service needs elevated permissions, but even adding it to the local Admin group makes no difference. Anyone come across this sort of issue before?

  Hi, I am trying to set up port forwarding on a linux box to a IIS webserver on my internal network. The web server sits on Windows 2003 Server. My linux box has eth0 - Internet connection eth1 - internal subnet (10.10.10.x) eth2 - 2nd internal subnet (129.168.0.x) dhcp interface my webserver is on the eth2 interface (192.168.0.6) I am doing port forwarding for port 80 with no avail. I use the same set of rules to port forward to a different webserver and it works. • Windows performance monitor new instances

  Hi all, I am trying to configure performance monitor on 2003/2008R1&R2 to capture new instances of the counters without any luck. For example if I select counter Process\%Processor time (to monitor processor time per any instances of the process) everything works fine until I open or close any application. If in the meanwhile new application is open it will not be included in the monitoring processor, and old application instance will display zero for % processor time. The problem is performance monitor is not refreshing instances of the new applications/users/new terminal session/ or any other metrics that changes instances in the meanwhile. The solution is to stop/start log file, but I don't want to do that every sec and the logging will be split into two files. Anybody knows how do I accomplish to add all new instances? Any help greatly appreciated

  We have 2 domains “pdc1” and “devkc” both are windows 2000 Active Directory domains with a 2-way trust relationship in place., has been this way for years. All of our developer machines are joined to the “devkc” domain but the users log into there accounts on the “pdc1” domain. This all works fine with Windows XP, 2000 and 2003 server. However with Windows Server 2008 the users can only log into the “devkc” domain that the machine is joined to, they can not log into the “pdc1” domain. The following error results: "The security database on this server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship” Any ideas would be greatly appreaciated Thanks Matt Fitz

• Excel - export sheet to fixed-width text file?

  I know that Excel has functionality to import fixed-width text files where it presents a dialog that lets you choose where the begins and ends of fields are which it puts into columns. Does it also have functionality where, given an existing spreadsheet, you can export to a fixed-width text file? If so, how do I access this? I have tried using Save As and choosing Text File but it seems to only save as Tab-delimited which doesn't help me. This is Excel 2003 if it matters. Thanks, ~ Justin

  We have just deployed a Windows 2008R2 server in our Windows 2003 domain. XP clinets are unable to browse in "entire network" and find the new server. It can be accessed by entering \\servername and it can be pinged by name and IP address. Users access shares without issue. Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled. Computer browser is running on the Windows 2008R2 system. Turn on Network Discovery is enabled. • Mercurial SSH process blocks when run from Local System

  We are using Mercurial over SSH for our development. We use Hudson for continous integration, and have deployed it on Tomcat, running on a Windows 2003 Server using the Local System account. Mercurial is configured to use Putty's plink.exe as its ssh command in Mercurial.ini, together with a private key for SSH authentication. When Hudson attempts any Mercurial command over SSH, the operation just blocks. I can see the three processes being started: hg.exe, cmd.exe and plink.exe. On the remote machine, I can also see the SSH session being opened and the authentication key being accepted. After that, nothing appears to happen, and everything just blocks, seemingly forever. (As a side note, subversion/SVN over SSH works from Hudson to the same server, using the same user and authentication key). A solution would of course be the best, but at least a hint for how I should debug it to get further would be nice, since I'm stuck and haven't even got an error message right now.
