• How to show what proxies/firewalls are enabled on Windows XP?

  Hi, I'm trying to fix a Windows XP PC that is having a strange problem. The computer can't seem to connect to the internet, even though an internet connection is present. The router and internet is working fine as I've connected a laptop to it via LAN and wireless and both worked fine. The PC in question is connected to the router as it has an IP from the DHCP. The problem is I can't connect to nor ping any internet address from the PC. I can't even connect to the router admin itself. I've tried both LAN ports in the PC, same problem and both. I'm assuming there's a proxy or firewall on the PC stopping the connections, I just don't know how to find them or see which one is causing the issue. So my question is how do I on Windows XP display the system proxy settings and/or any firewalls that are running? Cheers.

Both PCs are using Windows XP, and I have no crossover cables. I've got both computers wired up to a router, and the PC with the active internet connection has ICS enabled, but the second PC gets no internet. Any ideas?

• Network switches for LAN party

  I am working on setting up the network for a small LAN party (less than 16 people). Most of them do not have wireless cards in their rigs, so I need to set up some way for everyone to a) play LAN games and b) access the internet. The LAN party will probably take place in my basement, where I have enough space. However, the basement is not wired up with the router which is actually on the floor above. I make a cantenna a while back that can boost the wireless performance of my computer significantly. How can I use this to provide internet and LAN to guests? My hope was that I could use a switch like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181166 for the LAN - but how can I give people access to the internet? Is there such thing as a network extender / 16-port switch? Obviously, the internet performance doesn't need to be super stellar, because the games will be using LAN - so I am looking to provide some usable internet for web browsing, and very high speed LAN for games. • Onboard Ethernet suddenly stopped working to router

  Hey guys, yesterday I have a sudden problem of my Ethernet connection to my router. My computer is a Pendium 4 with Window XP SP3 running on it and it was working fine earlier in the day, but yesterday night was the start of the problem. My computer is unable to ping to the router and to any other website and unable to get internet connection. As beside it was connected to a hub, I directly connected it to the router directly and the same problem occurred, being unable to ping to the router (and connecting to it) and still no internet access. My directly connected to the modem and the problem still persisted. For each connection, I connected it to my computer and my laptop and my laptop was able to connect, while my desktop computer was unable. I wondered if it was a OS issue and ran a live Ubuntu CD to see if Ubuntu was able to connect to the internet, but the issue persisted and I was unable to get internet access. I then set my router's lease time to 1 hour and waited. After 1 hour, the lease for my computer was removed and I hoped this worked, but it didn't work, but something strange is acting up. My desktop computer is still unable to ping to the router or connect to the internet, but for some reason, my router and desktop computer is still able to contact each other by providing a lease of an local ip address. The router record of a lease to my desktop computer, and when I do ipconfig, my desktop also recognize that it has been provided a local ip address. I have concluded that this is a hardware issue and the only solution to fix this is to by a network card adapter, but I am wondering if anyone has any solutions that could explain why this happen, why my mac address is 01-23-45-67-89-ab, and is there any way to fix it without buying a new network card? Task Portforward port 29000 from office computer. Problem Once I connected wan and lan cables I just had to set static lan ip (on server) and plug in switch with office computers into second nic. Then just right click on wan nic and select share internet connection. All office computers were assigned with an IP address 192.168.0.XXX and Gateway 192.168.0.1 (server). Now I have to open port and portfoward it from computer 192.168.0.190 (static ip, manual).   I have a laptop computer that I had when I was working at an IT company. I don´t work there anymore but I could keep the computer (Lenovo) Suddenly my wireless internet didn´t work anymore showing error "insert SIM into the mobile broadband device" and month later connectiong to internet with cable got disabled I don´t know the password to sign in as an administrator on domain and whatever I try to do/install/change settings... everything needs admin rights. To surf the internet again with the computer I tried to install a new Windows but it´s seems to be protected with Bit Locker, asking for recovery key. I´ve googled and googled bunch of CMD tricks but most of the shows "system error 5 has occured" Is there anyway to get the wireless internet to work, change the admin or install new Windows? - or should I rather enjoying throwing it of the balcony or set it one fire? :)

• Lynksys WRT120N wireless router not connecting to ADSL

  I have a lynksys WRT120N wireless router that was connected to Sterlite ADSL modem. The internet connection was working fine through wireless access. I changed the ADSL router because it developed some power issues and got it replaced with the same model/brand from the service provider. However I am not able to access internet now. Here is the current setting Sterlite SAM300 XA IP Address: 192.168.2.1 (I changed it to this IP because the IP address of my ADSL router was same) Lynksys WRT120N wireless router IP Address: 192.168.1.1 If I connect my laptop to ADSL router directly, the internet works fine. It is only that that if I access it wirelessley through wireless router that I am not able to connect to internet. The IP address setting has been configured to obtain IP address automatically. I have windows 7 OS home edition. Could someone please help me to fix this issue.

• Application or plugin for turning screenshots into searchable text?

  It's a common practice in our company that people take screenshots of any software error situation they get into, and then they paste the screenshots in mail messages and/or Word documents that get sent and forwarded back and forth. I have lots of stuff like this in my Outlook mail archives, and the problem with it is, the screenshots aren't searchable, because they're just dumb images as far as Outlook or Windows Search are concerned. Sometimes I edit the original mail messages and type the text (typically an error message) from the screenshot into the message, but quite rarely, because it's slow and prone to typing errors. Is there a program or Outlook or Windows plugin that would OCR and index images in the Outlook mail archives, so the image contents would become indexable?

  I have a small office with 3 computers running Linux Ubuntu. All the data are stored in a NAS drive (WD MyBook Live). I would like to - somehow - be able to access the email archives as well from each of these computers. For now, I don't really care if it would be possible for each user to access the email archives simultaneously (although that would be ideal). I have read about Portable Thunderbird over Wine as well as installing IMAP on the NAS drive. However, not only I haven't found a complete guide on how to do that but I am also not sure whether either of these solutions would work for me anyway.

• Viewing zip archive contents using 'less' on OS X.

  I couldn't help but notice that the 'less' program on all of the recent distributions of Linux that I've used (Ubuntu and Gentoo in this case) allow me to view the contents of ZIP and TAR archives, while the install of 'less' that I have on OS X (and Solaris) instead produce a "foo.zip may be a binary file. See it anyway?", which proceeds to spit out the raw binary data instead of a nice file structure listing. Google has not produced much in the way of helpful results -- it's tricky to search for 'less' in this context. I downloaded and built the latest version from greenwoodsoftware.com, but even it refuses to show the contents of these archives. I didn't come across any related configure/build options either. Any ideas? Thanks!

  3 room mates share a single 2 Mbps connection. Have a 40GB per month download limit beyond which speed drops to 256Kbps which is annoying. One of the roommates abuses the connection by downloading beyond his quota limit. I have a Netgear WNR1000v2 Wireless router + ADSL Modem to connect to the internet. We all access internet via Wireless router which connects to ADSL Modem. I need a free proxy solution which can help me set 40GB / 3 (13 GB) limit for each person (every person has 2 devices - a PC and a phone with Wifi) Uniform Bandwidth control - when 2 people browse the internet they should get 1 Mbps each, and when 3 people access, they should get 2Mbps divided by 3. After each person crosses their monthly download limit, they should be able to access the internet with 256Kbps speed only or lesser. Can I have a custom firmware on my wireless router do this (or) Do I need a proxy server ? Please point me to any relevant tutorials (for example with Squid).

• Bridging two wireless interfaces with brctl?

  I have this topology: [internet] ^ L-------[wlan0]-[host]-[wlan1]-----[client-1] I tried to bridge wlan0 wlan1 but it wont work with brctl; but magically when I issue this command #iw set dev wlan0 4addr on it adds wlan0 to the bridge BUT I lost all internet connection and I was unable to hook it to the internet router. can somebody please explain why did that happen and is there a way to get this done ?

• Does a 300mbps 802.11n wireless connection have any noticeable speed improvement over 54mbps g?

  300mbps sounds wonderful, but not with my horrible Comcast internet connection. I doubt there's an internet connection in America that even hits 54mbps. So I'm guessing that the only reason someone would be inclined to upgrade is for faster data transfer within the local network. With my internet connection where download rates are rarely ever above a few hundred kilobytes a second, would I even see any improvement in switching from 802.11g to 802.11n?

• Can't recognize local webserver

  My Internet Cable provider has set up a web server which hosts different entertainment material like movies, songs, tv shows and games etc. While using windows the pc recognises it as a local web server and downloads files with full LAN speed of 10 mb per second. On the contrary when using Ubuntu I am only able to download the files on my Internet speed not more than 100 kb per second. What ever I try ubuntu does not recognizes the webserver as a local area network web server but as a normal internet website. How to make Ubuntu download files from this server with full LAN speed. Please help in this regard. The url is http://dmasti.pk and yes it is a web server browsable by a web browser like firefox or ie.

• website address point to localhost

  Today in firefox while surfing the internet, I opened a website it asked "This site may harm your computer" if you want to open this website add it in exception list. I added a website under exception list and trust this website. After that situation, whenever I opend this website, it always points toward the localhost untill internet connected. I have setup localhost through apache (xampp server). If internet not connected this website do not open anything but localhost still work as usaual. How can I remove this situation so that this website do not point to locathost? I am using winxp sp3. Same problem now appear in all browsers too.

• netbook alternate installation/update

  Ok I have an Asipre One D255E netbook. Installed 9.10 sucessfully, however no internet connections to upgrade to 10.04 or 10.10. have 10.10 alternate (couldnt get 10.04). However it says that no cd-rom present (netbook via live usb), and i direct it to sdb1 but that does not work. could someone guide me to the steps to installation via alternate ubs only (& no internet). the live usb's of 10.04 & 10.10 internet connections worked, but installation hanged (non alternate). Thank you greatly in advance.

Since i'm only sophomore at Computer Science, and i've only taken intermediate programming classes, i've no idea where to search for general information about this topic.
