• 11.10 system crashes for no apparent reason [closed]

  I'm relatively new to Linux, and while I know a fair amount about computers and programming, it certainly isn't my specialty. I have a dual boot with Windows 7, and it has been working very well for me until recently. Just randomly the computer will freeze. The last time I was smart enough to keep the System Monitor open when it happened, and it looks like at the time of freezing "bash" and a bunch of other processes that I don't recognize seem to have flooded the memory. So it looks like my memory is getting overloaded and this is what is crashing the system, but I honestly have no idea what could be doing it. Generally I have a bunch of programs running, but they don't take much RAM or CPU: Transmission, Libre Office Writer, Firefox, Empathy, and Banshee. Sometimes I also have Text Editor and Terminal open, but it crashes regardless. When it crashes, it seems that all of the programs are working fine but things like windows, the taskbar, and operations like Alt+Tab just stop working properly or at all. Sometimes the mouse and keyboard freeze and I have to power off manually. Other than that I don't know what the problem is. The only irregularity I've experienced is that I can't download "Debian package management system" even though other updates download fine.

• Ubuntu install can't find hard drives

  I recently got a Dell Inspiron Special Edition 7720 computer. I am trying to install Ubuntu along side Windows. When I use the WUBI installer, the installation of Ubuntu works as long as I do not boot into Windows; if I boot into Windows, when I go back into Ubuntu, I am given a variety of error messages which claim to have corrupt or missing kernel/root directory, etc. I have been working with this problem for about a week, and have reinstalled Ubuntu MANY times. So far, I have eliminated all of the following problems: Corrupt WUBI installation (Downloaded multiple times, used on other systems), I have tried using a CD and a flash drive, both of which work on other computers. I know that no program within Ubuntu is creating the problem. I know that others have successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer with my operating system (Windows 7 SP1). This is a much shortened version of the original question, which has been up for about 5 days, and included a more detailed description of the problem, but left everyone clueless as to the source of this problem. When I spoke with the Dell service technician who came over today to replace my keyboard, he suggested that the driver for my HDD was so new that it was not compatible with the current version of Ubuntu. His reasoning is as follows: 1) During an install from a flash drive or CD, where I am supposed to get the option to wipe my system or create a dual boot, I get a window that asks me to select a hard drive partition, but none are listed. 2) This model of computer was made public in June of this year, while Ubuntu was released in April Adopting this theory, it would seem to me that the WUBI install fails after booting into Windows because Ubuntu can no longer find the files that it needs to load. Does this theory seem at all plausible to anyone? I just want to install Ubuntu and have it stay on my computer. I don't care how I put it there, I just need it to work, so I would TRULY appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone could give. Thanks so much for your time and support!!!

• Login Screen hangs after entering password

  When I enter my password in the login box nothing happens. It gets stuck. It was running fine earlier. I have installed gnome-panel and cairo-dock, after which, I logged out, logged back in, and choose gnome classic session. I also added a ppa from the webupd8.org to install the themes (link). I opened Ubuntu Tweak tool, and changed the theme to Evolve the whole laptop stopped responding. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. So I was forced to do a shut down. Now whenever it starts, I cannot login into Ubuntu. I hear the fan noise, as its spinning very fast, when the laptop freezes.(Probably the CPU is running at 100%). Please help me. How can I login back to Ubuntu? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and have installed all the latest updates.. EDIT: I want to know how can I delete a folder from the file system using the live CD?

• Make a basic running sprite effect

  I'm building my very first game with XNA and i'm trying to get my sprite to run. Everything is working fine for the first sprite. E.g : if I go right(D) my sprite is looking right , if I go left(A) my sprite is looking left and if I don't touch anything my sprite is the default one. Now what I want to do is if the sprite goes Right, i want to alternatively change sprites (left leg, right leg, left leg etc..) xCurrent is the current sprite drawn xRunRight is the first running Sprite and xRunRight1 is the one that have to exchange with xRunRight while running right. • Unable to start after 13.04 > 13.10 udate

  At the end of the update process, clicking on the Restart button had no visible effect whatsoever. After waiting 5 to 10 minutes, I decided to reboot the computer manually. Since then, I rebooted a good dozen times (not with the hope that it would work but with the hope of reading the messages) with the same non-result and the same symptoms: I get the ASCII text-on-purple Ubuntu 13.10 . . . . splash screen with these messages: * Restoring resolver state... [OK] * Starting crash report submission daemon [OK] * Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [OK] Everything disappears. The whole process hangs at a purple screen with the mouse cursor right in the middle. At this point, I'm unable to use the mouse and the keyboard. Booting from a 12.04 CD works perfectly, Disk Utility says that all my disks are OK and I can mount my main partition without problems. Something obviously went wrong at the end of the upgrade but I have no idea what. I'd appreciate any pointer. This is the kind of moment where you really think "Next time, I'll separate my /home partition for sure". My machine is an aging but working Dell Inspiron 530 with an Intel Core Duo E2160 processor, 2 GHz of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3650 video card. Thanks.

• Predictive firing (in a tile-based game)

  I have a (turn-based) tile-based game, in which you can shoot at entities. You can move around with mouse and keyboard, it's all tile-based, except that bullets move "freely". I've got it all working just fine except that when I move, and the creatures shoot towards the player, they shoot towards the previous tiles.. resulting in ugly looking "miss hits" or lag. I think I need to implement some kind of predictive firing based on the bullet speed and the distance, but I don't quite know how to implement such a thing... Here's a simplified snip of my firing code. class Weapon { public void fire(int x, int y) { ... ... ... • System always halt

  Good day, Thanks Bruno for the prompt response. First sorry for my bad writing. I'll try to clarify my problem. Now my system already update to version 13.10. The problem is my system always put on stop whenever there is no activity. Example: I open terminal then execute "sudo apt-get update" then I leave my laptop away, the update stop at 20%. After I move my mouse then the update continue. When I watch a movie using vlc. Play the movie and change to full screen. After a while like 30-40 seconds the movie pause, and again after I move my mouse or hit any button on my keyboard the movie continue to play. I downloading torrent file, a big file, I leave my laptop the whole night, the next morning the downloading just stop. the problem my laptop cannot be on idle. means when I downloading a file or updating my system I just cannot leave my laptop away. I have to kept my laptop busy like surfing the internet...playing games etc.

• Mouse freezes for User Account but not guest session

  this question has been asked before but there wasn't an answer. The mouse on my computer freezes whenever I log in to my User Account, a few seconds after, just before the account opens. The keyboard still works, and programs seem to work as normal. If I log out, the mouse starts to work again. If I log in as a guest, the mouse works fine throughout. I have tried restarting, shutting down, which hasn't resolved the problem. Just after the problem started, I logged in as a guest and tried to open Firefox, but although I haven't logged in as a guest for ages, there was a message saying that Firefox couldn't be opened as it was already running. Could this have been in my main account? Do you know how I can unfreeze the mouse? Is it the same procedure that is recommended on other questions? I am extremely untechnical, and a friend did all the ubuntu installation. So a very detailed step by step would be appreciated if I have to use code to fix this.

• How can I activate a Panel-icon via a script (or get its screen co-ordinates; to click it)?

  This question is in the context of Lucid 10.04 desktop (ie. no Unity). I do most screen navigation via the keyboard (not the mouse), so I'm looking for a script solution to re-activating an app which has been "minimized" to the Panel's Notification Area. I'll use Skype as an example. wmctrl allows me enough access to normally-minimized windows, but when Skype is "minimized" to the Notification Area, it simply goes "off the radar" as far as wmctrl is concerned. Bearing in mind that icon positions in the Notification Area can vary, is there some way to determine the screen co-ordinates of Skype's Panel icon, so I can "click" it using xdotool (or a similar utility)? ...or maybe there is a more direct way to activate the "dormant" Skype? ... (and I don't mean the mouse ;) Here is the script, so far. • How to Boot or "enter" into ubnutu 11.04 (Natty Narwhall) on PS3 after installing it?

  After failing to install ubuntu 11.04 Desktop version (burned on a dvd, because iso's file size was 726 Mb), in tried the alternate version (about 686 Mb) which i burned into a CD. During the installation process, i manually partitioned the hard drive using ext3. After the installation, the CD ejects itself and i hit "continue". In the k boot prompt i hit "enter" on my the keyboard. I see i welcome message in a dark background (a kind of full screen terminal/console called CLI i think) and was asked to enter my user name and password. After that, instead of booting into the beautiful desktop of Ubuntu, i saw this: ubuntu@my_name$ It was like a line of command i think, where you can use "sudo" commands. It is called a non-graphic mode i think. My my REAL problem is to enter Ubuntu 11.04 with the chocolate-colored background and the African music drum. I tried many commands to boot into the graphic mode of the system such as Ctr+Alt+F7 but nothing happened. In this case, i just saw numbers showing available blocks. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. I also tried startx and sudo startx without result. I DO bought a PS3 BOTH for gaming and for Ubuntu because i can't afford buying a PC. Please help me with my trouble dear Ubuntu 11.04 users.   I have a desktop PC which I built a while back. It has an Athlon XP 2500+, 2.5GB RAM, and an Nvidia (PNY Verto) Geforce 6200. I removed the CD drive to add another hard drive so I install from a USB flash drive. When I try to install 12.04 it seems to work just fine. The GUI boots up and wifi even connects to my router. I go through the language screen, the partition screen, the keyboard screen, the location screen, and the import my Windows settings screen just fine. But as soon as I'm done with all that the next screen goes black and displays this message: drm:[drm_crtc_helper_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC6] Since the GUI starts just fine earlier during the install, I know I shouldn't be having any display problems, but I am. How do I get Ubuntu to install properly? I have four IDE hard drives, all Western Digital: a 250GB, a 160GB, a 40GB occupied by Windows XP, and a 120GB that I'm trying to use for Ubuntu. 3GB of the 120GB drive are formatted for swap. • How to get the level and position of the player from an extern program? [on hold]

  I want to write a program that needs the current level and position of the player (primary single player). This should work for potentially every game installed and running on the computer my program is running on. The data I need is basically one integer value for the level (if there are any) and three integer values for x, y and optimal z for the position of the player. In which relation/scale or where the null point is does not matter, because this information is going to be interpreted game dependent, I will use this information to read information out of a database created for the game currently running. Currently I'm using C++, but if there is a better option for Java I´m willing to port my program. My thoughs so far are: make a mod for every game that should be supported, get the position/level from there, write this information to the disk and read it from my program tracking mouse/keyboard events and reconstructing the movement won't work Are there any general APIs for something like this? Any Tool to find this data? Or maybe engines that provide APIs to get this data directly from the game?

  What does a company need to offer you (apart from a fat pay cheque) for you to work for them? I am aware of this question, which is from an employer's perspective. I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside. Flexible hours/ option to work from home is a bonus

• How do I have an arrow follow different height parabolas depending on how long the player holds down a key?

  i'm trying to throw an arrow in my game, but i'm having a hard time trying to realize how to make a good parabola. What I need: The more you hold "enter" stronger the arrow goes. The arrow angle will be always the same, 45 degrees. • What do you use to store all of your personal data?

  I have been on a quest for years to find the perfect tool to store all "my stuff". You know... personal information, code snippets, software keys, people's birthdays, whatever. There are lots of tools out there for this sort of thing, but I've never found any of them quite what I need. Ideally, I would just be able to type some notes, tag them (I don't like the idea of folder organization... too cumbersome) and then easily search and retrieve what I need later. It seems so simple, but for some reason I just can't find it. I currently use Backpack (sometimes), which is OK, but I hate the fact that you always have to create "pages" to store things. I don't want to have to do that. I want to just type some notes, tag it and save. That's it. And Backpack didn't even have search for a long time. What I do like about Backpack is that it's fast and it's web based. I've tried some desktop apps, which probably came closer to the functionality I want, but I just hate being tied to a single machine. I want to be able to get to my stuff anywhere, so the web based thing is a definite requirement. Anyway, I'm thinking about writing my own thing for this if I can't find anything, but before I make the attempt, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I've used Backpack, Zoho Planner, Stikkit and Google Notes so far, and they are not quite to my liking. Anyone? (Sorry if this is off-topic, but I figured you guys might be legitimately into this kind of thing... you know, storing code snippets and such.) UPDATE: I've been using Evernote for a few days, and it is exactly what I've been looking for. It is totally tag based and allows both online and offline usage. The desktop app sits in your system tray and allows you to add whatever you want on the fly either as text notes or clippings from the browser. It also syncs it to the web (if you want) where you can get to it from anywhere using their web client. They even have a mobile client which I haven't used, but I will try it soon. • DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

  Hello, I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD. • What the hell was THAT?!?

  My system is Windows XP SP3, updated with the latest patches. The PC is connected to a Cisco 877 ADSL router, which does NAT from the internal network to its single static public IP address. There are no forwarded ports, and the router's management console can only be accessed from the inside. I was doing two things: working on a remote office machine via VPN and browsing some web pages on the Cisco web site. The remote network is absolutely safe (it's a lab network, four virtual servers, no publicly accessible services and no users at all; also, none of what I'm going to describe ever happened there). The Cisco web site... well, I suppose is quite safe, too. Suddenly, something happened. Strange popups appears anywhere; programs claiming they're "antimalware", "antispyware" et so on begins autoinstalling; fake Windows Update and Security Center icons pop up in the system tray. svchost.exe began crashing repeatedly. Then, finally, after some minutes of this... BSOD. And, upon rebooting, BSOD again. Even in safe mode. Ok, that was obviously some virus/trojan/whatever. I had to install a new copy of Windows on another partition to clean things up. I found strange executables, services and DLLs almost anywhere. Amongst the other things, user32.dll and ndis.sys had been replaced. A fake software called "Antimalware Doctor" had been installed. There were services with completely random names or even GUIDs (!), and also ones called "IpSect" and "Darkness". There were executable files without an .exe extension. There were even two boot-class drivers, which I'm quite sure are the ones that finally caused the system to crash. A true massacre. Ok, now the questions: What the hell was that?!? It was something more than a simple virus! How did it manage to attack my computer, as I am behind a firewall and was not doing anything even only potentially harmful on the web at the time?

• Radeon HD4850 serious issues when using DirectX 10

  Hello, I have a problem with my video card. Whenever I run a DirectX 10 game, it works for a few seconds (10 or so) and then starts displaying nothing but big polygons. I have tested this with Crysis and Resident Evil 5, both have the same problems. The same games running under DirectX 9 work fine, except for some small black squares once in a while. I have the following specs: Asus P7P55D LE Intel Core i5 750 Sapphire Radeon HD4850 1GB 2x2GB Patriot Viper II Sector 5, DDR3 1600 MHz OCZ Stealth X Stream 500SXS 500W At first I thought it could be the video card overheating (it has stock cooling), but the game crashes even when it's running at 50 degrees C, and it's never been higher than 70. I also thought it could be the PSU, but as far as I know 500W is enough for this computer, especially because I haven't overclocked anything. My OS is Windows 7 X64 and I am using Catalyst 10.10, but I have also tried many older versions with no success. I don't think there is a problem with the card itself, or else it wouldn't run DirectX 9 games I believe. I have spent many hours searching for a solution but I couldn't, so any help is appreciated. Thank you. EDIT: I did some further investigation about the problem, and it seems taspeotis was right, it might be related to memory. I slightly underclocked the memory from 993 to 965 MHz and the problem went away completely. Both the black squares using DirectX 9 and the weird polygons using DirectX 10. I was using RE DirectX 10 Benchmark, as it consistently crashed around the same point, and now I can play the full benchmark with no artifacts at all. Unfortunately, the underclock has an obvious hit in performance. Although it's not critical, it's definitely noticeable. So, if the video memory test software showed no erros, but the card needs an underclock to work, what might be the problem? Temperature? Voltage? By the way, I couldn't find what the default voltage for this card is. And what is a good software to try and increase it? I tried Ati Tray Tools but it has a bug that increases the clock speed dramatically whenever I change something in the Overclock tab, so I'm afraid it might fry my card. Worst case scenario, if I don't find I solution I will try to slightly increase the GPU clock to compensate for the memory clock. Thank you again.

• Problem with several USB devices on Windows XP. How to diagnose USB device?

  Hello All, Recently I've bought some electronic devices (like e.g. Sony Ebook reader PRS-600 or HP PDA IPaq) which are connected to PC using USB ports. These devices have own batteries and they are recharged using USB. However, I am experiencing a problem with Ebook Reader and the similiar thing happens with my PDA (but in this case it's more rare). Sometimes, I am unable to make it start recharging, when it's connected to USB port. The LCD diode on my Reader lights up and the icon in the system tray appears. They both indicate that the device has been connected. However, the device should start recharching and it should appear on Windows XP as a 'explorable' device (just like pendrive it offers some HDDs). None of these happens:( This problem appears on two PCs - desktop and laptop. Both have Windows XP SP3 installed. And what's interesting and surprising to me is the fact that these devices sometimes work without any problems. I mean, I just plug them in and they work properly. Besides that, there are some computers (I have tested a variety of possible conditions) on which the problem does not appear! I am confused and, on the other hand, determined to find out what is the real cause of such strange behavior. Maybe I'm wrong but I always assumed that I'm using deterministic machines, but the described situation makes me feel like I was dreaming:) And that's why I'm asking you here. Are there any tools that could help me diagnose USB ports? Or maybe anyone knows the solution? I have a lot experience with low level programming (mostly from the times of MS-DOS applications), but I'm not an expert when it comes to WinXP technology. If this was a problem with network connection, I would know what to do - I know how to track network traffic, but with USB ports I feel powerless. I have a feeling that the problem may lie in a way WinXP handles USB devices. Personally, I hate auto-discovery and P'n'P features available in Windows. I know that some of may suggest to move to Linux or other *Nix system. Unfortunately, I have to use WinXP in my professional life, so it's rather impossible. Besides that, I don't consider XP as a total disaster. Any help from you will be appreciated!
