Cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on Ubuntu 12.04

I cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on my 12.04. I first went with a manual install for the .deb from the old builds section of the Virtualbox page. That .deb opened up the Software Center and installed. Then I got the error coming up of VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot. which I can only assume was due to my Ubuntu version being 32-bit (System Details - Overview - OC type: 32-bit, right?) So I followed these instructions to remove the .deb manually, restarted my laptop, and then FOUND the actual Virtualbox install in the Software Center and installed from that (assuming it would give me the correct version I need for my system) So after all that (and then some), I'm still getting the same error when I connect to my new job's project in Virtualbox. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to do here? This is the first time I've ever worked with Virtualbox, and no one at this company is using Ubuntu, so I'm on my own here. Exit Infragistics, Enter Telerik

Today I made the purchase of the Premium Collection of components from Telerik. This follows an evaluation I’ve been doing to replace the Infragistics components we currently use for Windows Forms, ASP.NET MVC, and WPF. It was not a formal evaluation. I had already decided to move the company away from Infragistics. That decision was mostly born out of frustration with support over using the Infragistics components in my first production MVC application. One such issue was a simple scenario where you have a model that has a scalar property that can be one value out of a list. The built-in combobox does this, but I was told by Infragistics support that they didn’t support it – and it took them several emails and days of waiting between responses to determine that. I implemented this in Telerik in a minute not including the several minutes it took me to get a rudimentary understanding for the component and its API. Here’s the code using the built-in combobox:@Html.DropDownListFor(x => x.VendorId, new SelectList(ViewBag.Vendors, "VendorId", "VendorName", Model.VendorId), "Select Id") Here’s the code using the Telerik combobox:@(Html.Telerik().ComboBoxFor(model => model.VendorId) .AutoFill(true) .BindTo(new SelectList(ViewBag.Vendors, "VendorId", "VendorName", Model.VendorId)) ) I chose Telerik over other competitors based on the professional appearance of their website, and how easy it was to find information. I’d like to say I had time to evaluate other Infragistics competitors. Due to time constraints I had to make an initial decision based on superficial, but still important things. I picked Telerik with the plan to only look further at other companies if my evaluation didn’t meet my expectations. Luckily they did, because I didn’t relish the thought of carving out more time to evaluate another set of components. Overall my experience with Telerik has been superior to Infragistics in every way. The installation was easy using their control panel installer application. Getting up to speed has been easy. And the communication from Telerik has met my expectations. And we’ll continue to be good as long as I don’t start getting email messages from a sales rep saying that they want to talk to me about training and consulting – I’m looking at you Infragistics.

Windows Phone 7 and WS-Trust

A question that I often hear these days is: “Can I connect a Windows Phone 7 device to my existing enterprise services?”. Well – since most of my services are typically issued token based, this requires support for WS-Trust and WS-Security on the client. Let’s see what’s necessary to write a WP7 client for this scenario. First I converted the Silverlight library that comes with the Identity Training Kit to WP7. Some things are not supported in WP7 WCF (like message inspectors and some client runtime hooks) – but besides that this was a simple copy+paste job. Very nice! How to get around the Circular Reference issue with JSON and Entity

I have been experimenting with creating a website that leverages MVC with JSON for my presentation layer and Entity framework for data model/database. My Issue comes into play with serializing my Model objects into JSON. I am using the code first method to create my database. When doing the code first method a one to many relationship (parent/child) requires the child to have a reference back to the parent. (Example code my be a typo but you get the picture) class parent { public List<child> Children{get;set;} public int Id{get;set;} } class child { public int ParentId{get;set;} [ForeignKey("ParentId")] public parent MyParent{get;set;} public string name{get;set;} } When returning a "parent" object via a JsonResult a circular reference error is thrown because "child" has a property of class parent. I have tried the ScriptIgnore attribute but I lose the ability to look at the child objects. I will need to display information in a parent child view at some point. I have tried to make base classes for both parent and child that do not have a circular reference. Unfortunately when I attempt to send the baseParent and baseChild these are read by the JSON Parser as their derived classes (I am pretty sure this concept is escaping me). Base.baseParent basep = (Base.baseParent)parent; return Json(basep, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); The one solution I have come up with is to create "View" Models. I create simple versions of the database models that do not include the reference to the parent class. These view models each have method to return the Database Version and a constructor that takes the database model as a parameter (viewmodel.name = databasemodel.name). This method seems forced although it works. NOTE:I am posting here because I think this is more discussion worthy. I could leverage a different design pattern to over come this issue or it could be as simple as using a different attribute on my model. In my searching I have not seen a good method to overcome this problem. My end goal would be to have a nice MVC application that heavily leverages JSON for communicating with the server and displaying data. While maintaining a consistant model across layers (or as best as I can come up with).

WPF - ListView within listView Scrollbar problem

So I currently have a ListView "List A" who's items each have an expander control which contains another ListView "List B". The problem I am having is that sometimes List B grows so big that it extends beyond the range of List A's view area. List A's scroll bars do not pick up the fact that parts of List B are not being displayed. Is there a way to setup my xaml so that the scroll bars for List A will detect when the list inside the expander is longer then the viewing area of List A. WPF TreeView MouseDown

I've got something like this in a TreeView: <DataTemplate x:Key="myTemplate"> <StackPanel MouseDown="OnItemMouseDown"> ... </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> Using this I get the mouse down events if I click on items in the stack panel. However... there seems to be another item behind the stack panel that is the TreeViewItem - it's very hard to hit, but not impossible, and that's when the problems start to occur. I had a go at handling PreviewMouseDown on TreeViewItem, however that seems to require e.Handled = false otherwise standard tree view behaviour stops working. Ok, Here's the source code... Column Header for a WPF TreeView

I found two solutions that came close: 1) A TreeListView here, but this requires me to implement a custom interface (ITreeModel) to my model. Also the approach in this solution is to start with a ListView and to implement a RowExpander manually. In my case, the TreeView is sufficiently close to what I need, so I am hoping that putting a header on it should be very simple. 2) A TreeListView here. This one indeed starts with a TreeView, but I can't figure out how to customize the header. I suspect that I have to customize the GridViewHeaderRowPresenter in the generic.xaml, but this element does not seem to have its own ControlTemplate.

Unable to set maxReceivedMessageSize through web.config

Hello there, I have now investigated the 400 - BadRequest code for the last two hours. A lot of sugestions goes towards ensuring the bindingConfiguration attribute is set correctly, and in my case, it is. Now, I need YOUR help before destroying the building i am in :-) I run a WCF RestFull service (very lightweight, using this resource for inspiration: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd315413.aspx) which (for now) accepts an XmlElement (POX) provided through the POST verb. I am currently ONLY using Fiddler's request builder before implementing a true client (as this is mixed environments). When I do this for XML smaller than 65K, it works fine - larger, it throws this exception: The maximum message size quota for incoming messages (65536) has been exceeded. To increase the quota, use the MaxReceivedMessageSize property on the appropriate binding element. Attempting to update multiple partial views from a single Ajax.ActionLink

I am trying to the main partial view ( "MainPartialView" ) from an Ajax.ActionLink in a partial view contained by the main partial view ( "DetailsView" ). Everything appears to be called just fine and I can step through and it executes all of the code on the pages. MVVM pattern and nested view models - communication and lookup lists

I am using Prism for a new application that I am creating. There are several lookup lists that will be used in several places in the application. Therefore it makes sense to define it once and use that everywhere I need that functionality. My current solution is to use typed data templates to render the controls inside a content control. <DataTemplate DataType={x:Type ListOfCountriesViewModel}> <ComboBox ItemsSource={Binding Countries} SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedCountry"/> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType={x:Type ListOfRegionsViewModel}> <ComboBox ItemsSource={Binding Countries} SelectedItem={Binding SelectedRegion} /> </DataTemplate> public class ParentViewModel { SelectedCountry get; set; SelectedRegion get; set; ListOfCountriesViewModel CountriesVM; ListOfRegionsViewModel RgnsVM; } Then in my window I have 2 content controls and the rest of the controls <ContentControl Content="{Binding CountriesVM}"></ContentControl> <ContentControl Content="{Binding RgnsVM}"></ContentControl> <Rest of controls on view> At the moment I have this working and the SelectedItems for the combo boxes are publising events via EventAggregator from the child view models which are then subscribed to in the parent view model. I am not sure that this is the best way to go as I can imagine I would end up with a lot of events very quickly and it will become unwieldy. Also if I was to use the same view model on another window it will publish the event and this parent viewmodel is subscribed to it which could have unintended consequences. My questions are :- Is this the best way to put lookup lists in a view which can be re-used across screens? How do I make it so that the combobox which is bound to the child viewmodel sets the relevant property on the parent viewmodel without using events / mediator. e.g in this case SelectedCountry for example? Any alternative implementation proposals for what I am trying to do? I have a feeling I am missing something obvious and there is so much info it is hard to know what is right so any help would be most gratefully received.

Simply by commenting the style out everyting works perfectly. How do I fix this? WCF listenBacklog and maxConnections can't be set higher than 10. Why not?

My service works great under low load. But under high load I start to get connection errors. I know about other settings but I am trying to change the listenBacklog parameter in particular for my TCP Buffered binding. If I set listenBacklog="10" I am able to telnet into the port where my WCF service is running. If I change listenBacklog to anything higher than 10 it will not let me telnet into my service when it is running. No errors seem to be thrown. What can I do? I get the same problem when I change my maxConnections away from 10. All other properties of the binding I can set higher without a problem. I've been following a tutorial and a sample application, namely 5 Days of Wicket - Writing the tests: http://www.mysticcoders.com/blog/2009/03/10/5-days-of-wicket-writing-the-tests/ I've set up my own little project with a simple shoutbox that saves messages to a database. I then wanted to set up a couple of tests that would make sure that if a message is stored in the database, the retrieved object would contain the exact same data. Upon running mvn test all my tests fail. The exception has been pasted in the first code box underneath. I've noticed that even though my unitils.properties says to use the 'hdqldb'-dialect, this message is still output in the console window when starting the tests: INFO - Dialect - Using dialect: org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect. C# WCF - Failed to invoke the service.

I am getting the following error when trying to use the WCF Test Client to hit my new web service. What is weird is every once in awhile it will execute once then start popping this error. Failed to invoke the service. Possible causes: The service is offline or inaccessible; the client-side configuration does not match the proxy; the existing proxy is invalid. Refer to the stack trace for more detail. You can try to recover by starting a new proxy, restoring to default configuration, or refreshing the service. MVC 2 View Layout CSS Control Layout

I'm new to a lot of what I'm trying to do with the development of a new MVC2 web application so this is a beginner question. I need to understand my options for control and content layout on a web page. I’m using MVC2 so I’m using Controllers, Views, ViewModels, and View Templates. What I need to spin up on…fast…is control the granular layout of controls and content on any particular view. Below I’ve pasted two examples of auto generated templates that illustrate my challenge. I see that layout is controlled by CSS in my Site.css document. In the first example I get a sequential flow of DisplayLabel and DisplayField. I prefer the adjacent layout of DisplayLabel on the same line as DisplayField produced from example 2. However, example 2 is too simple because the formatting is applied to the Label and the Field. I think the correct way to tackle this learning curve is Microsoft Expression but I don’t have personal bandwidth at the moment to tackle Expression. Can anyone point me to a resource that will expose me to lots of examples for CSS formatting? I have lots of syntax questions. For instance, I believe is referencing the Site.css but I can’t find a "display-label" section in Site.css. The same happens for {0:u} or {0:s}. Any help would be gratefully received. :)

How to expose service contract interfaces with multiple inheritance in WCF service on single endpoin

I have only simple data types in method signature of service (such as int, string). My service class implements single ServiceContract interface say IMathService, and this interface in turn inherits from some other base interface say IAdderService. I want to expose the MathService using interface contract IAdderService as a service on a single endpoint. My observation is if server exposes IMathService to client then client can safely typecast to IAdderService and vice versa is also possible. However if server exposes IAdderService then the typecast fails. Is there any solution to this? or am I doing it in a wrong way.
