• Troubleshooting a slow database server with no load

  I'm getting ready to soft launch my website and I've run into some problems with what I think is being caused by my MySQL database running on Fedora. All websites run fine, just as I'd expect, but any pages that establish a database connection hang until the connection is established, and then bang, the site loads as it should. Ex. My landing page (http://www.thrusong.com) doesn't make a database connection and loads quickly. User profile pages (http://www.thrusong.com/john) make a database connection and load slowly, even though most of the data comes from memcached and the database currently has no load on it. This problem just came up yesterday when my router died and I began using my Pace 2Wire modem with built-in router. Before, my old router was set to handle everything. My ISP says the settings in the modem are correct. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Find keyword values from PDF [closed]

  I have a lot of PDF reports I'd need to index. They're mostly "text-based PDFs", not images. I know they all have account number in certain format, 123456AAAAA and some other keyword info like addresses, customer names etc. needed in indexing these files. Basically if the file is ab.pdf, I need to create ab.txt that contains: ACC=123456AAAA Customer=John Doe Date=20120808 What would be the best software/solution to generate indexing information for these? I know there's pdftotext, but piping it to different grep/awk commands is a hack... It would be nice to specify an area in PDF to search for the account number, and specify the format it is in.

• Creating a custom view for windows log based on a "Contains {text}" rule

  I have a server running Windows Server 2008. I'm using Windows Server Auditing to check when and by which user a folder is modified to determine who is modifying it as the modifications are causing problems. I can see the log of the audit when a change is made in the System log. How do I create a Custom View that will return all events from System log where a certain text (which is the folder name) is present? The create custom view doesn't seem to have that option. I'm not sure whether it's possible via custom xml query or whether I'll need to export the system log to csv and search in Excel. John

  I am supposed to go to an interview to a bank for just supporting managers in projects. It's a part-time job and the thing is that bank uses Excel for everything. Modifications of tables of really lot of data... What can I expect to find in the test of Excel? I have some books that are around 1000 pages thick but I don't have time and also don't feel like reading everything that's in them. • Is there a way to automatically display the username on the Desktop background in Win7?

  We have computer used by multiple users running Win7. Unfortunately, people forget to log out, or they just use the session that is currently open, or they think that they're using their own session, but in the meantime, somebody else has logged on without logging out. To make it clear to people that they're using somebody else's session, I'd like to display the username of the person logged on (the one that's visible in the start menu) on the Desktop wallpaper; something like "John Doe's session". Is that possible?

• How to map email addresses on subdomains

  Is it possible to create email addresses like these: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] and have them all handled by one mail server, as three different mail boxes? (Many examples I've seen talk about directing mail to [email protected] into the same mail box as [email protected] - but this is not what I'm looking for.) I haven't specified the server technology being used because I'm wondering if this is generally possible. If you know that server x can do this, please mention it in your answer! Is it correct that MX records can be set to direct email to all subdomains *.mydomain.com to one mail server? Is that still true if there are also web sites at those subdomains (using A records)? • Why does MOVE command in DOS treat wildcard patterns oddly in this case?

  I am using the "move" command with a wildcard pattern in the CMD prompt under Windows 7. In my source directory, I have the following files: movie1.avi movie1.avi_metadata movie2.avi movie2.avi_metadata If I type the command move source\*.avi dest it will move all four files even though I would expect it to only move the two *.avi files and not the *.avi_metadata files. As expected, move source\*.a dest and move source\*.av dest don't move any files. However when the length of the extension for the wildcard pattern is 3 characters, it will move all extensions that begin with those first three characters. Is this a bug in the "move" command or expected behavior and is it documented anywhere? Edit: John Watts notes that this is probably do to "short" filenames. Is it possible then to make commands in the CMD interpreter only operate on long filenames and to ignore short filenames?

  I have a netbook, with window 7 starter. I was trying to change the wallpaper, and found this application: John's Background Switcher which said that I can make slide show of themes, I guess it's as you set wallpaper with window 7 ultimate. The default wallpaper was still fine until downloading that application. After trying it, error occurred, I couldnt change the background, so I closed it, but then the default wallpaper changed its size, the central image dropped out of screen, can see aaprt of it on `bottom right hand corner. I tried to adjust the image into center, but it didnt work when i right click on desktop - Graphic option - panel fit - "center image". Anybody can help me? how to adjust it back to normal as original?

• How can I dynamically change auto complete entries in a C# combobox or textbox?

  I have a combobox in C# and I want to use auto complete suggestions with it, however I want to be able to change the auto complete entries as the user types, because the possible valid entries are far too numerous to populate the AutoCompleteStringCollection at startup. As an example, suppose I'm letting the user type in a name. I have a list of possible first names ("Joe", "John") and a list of surnames ("Bloggs", "Smith"), but if I have a thousand of each, then that would be a million possible strings - too many to put in the auto complete entries. So initially I want to have just the first names as suggestions ("Joe", "John") , and then once the user has typed the first name, ("Joe"), I want to remove the existing auto complete entries and replace them with a new set consisting of the chosen first name followed by the possible surnames ("Joe Bloggs", "Joe Smith"). In order to do this, I tried the following code: void InitializeComboBox() { ComboName.AutoCompleteMode = AutoCompleteMode.SuggestAppend; ComboName.AutoCompleteSource = AutoCompleteSource.CustomSource; ComboName.AutoCompleteCustomSource = new AutoCompleteStringCollection(); ComboName.TextChanged += new EventHandler( ComboName_TextChanged ); } void ComboName_TextChanged( object sender, EventArgs e ) { string text = this.ComboName.Text; string[] suggestions = GetNameSuggestions( text ); this.ComboQuery.AutoCompleteCustomSource.Clear(); this.ComboQuery.AutoCompleteCustomSource.AddRange( suggestions ); } However, this does not work properly. It seems that the call to Clear() causes the auto complete mechanism to "turn off" until the next character appears in the combo box, but of course when the next character appears the above code calls Clear() again, so the user never actually sees the auto complete functionality. It also causes the entire contents of the combo box to become selected, so between every keypress you have to deselect the existing text, which makes it unusable. If I remove the call to Clear() then the auto complete works, but it seems that then the AddRange() call has no effect, because the new suggestions that I add do not appear in the auto complete dropdown. I have been searching for a solution to this, and seen various things suggested, but I cannot get any of them to work - either the auto complete functionality appears disabled, or new strings do not appear. Here is a list of things I have tried: Calling BeginUpdate() before changing the strings and EndUpdate() afterwards. Calling Remove() on all the existing strings instead of Clear(). Clearing the text from the combobox while I update the strings, and adding it back afterwards. Setting the AutoCompleteMode to "None" while I change the strings, and setting it back to "SuggestAppend" afterwards. Hooking the TextUpdate or KeyPress event instead of TextChanged. Replacing the existing AutoCompleteCustomSource with a new AutoCompleteStringCollection each time. None of these helped, even in various combinations. Spence suggested that I try overriding the ComboBox function that gets the list of strings to use in auto complete. Using a reflector I found a couple of methods in the ComboBox class that look promising - GetStringsForAutoComplete() and SetAutoComplete(), but they are both private so I can't access them from a derived class. I couldn't take that any further. I tried replacing the ComboBox with a TextBox, because the auto complete interface is the same, and I found that the behaviour is slightly different. With the TextBox it appears to work better, in that the Append part of the auto complete works properly, but the Suggest part doesn't - the suggestion box briefly flashes to life but then immediately disappears.   Hi, I'm trying to pick up Svn.NET (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/) library for use in my Mono project. I tried compiling its mockapp - svnmockapp project (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/browser/trunk/SvnMockApp) , I am able to get the references right and get it compiled right. I understand that it references 2 other modules libapr (libapr-1.so.0) and svn_client (libsvn_client-1.so.0) , by which I've created PumaCode.SvnDotNet.dll.config in /bin/Debug . That is all I've done to tried to try to get the mockapp at least outputting something to show that it is indeed interfacing SVN. Nevertheless, it is not working. Commands that are entered that doesn't interface SVN works fine: $ mono SvnTest.exe -usage Usage: SvnTest <subcommand> [options] Short Options: ~?.V Subcommands: add, checkout[co], status[st], update[up] For help on subcommands, use the -?/--help subcommand option. Google yielded a few results in antique Java and Python, but no modern implementations. I am curious if I have to write my own parser. Do you know of a modern implementation in C# or Java? In case there really are no parsers available, how should I implement one? Are there general guidelines or tools (in a C# environment) I should know of? • Invalid UTF-8 for Postgres, Perl thinks they're ok

  I'm running perl 5.10.0 and Postgres 8.4.3, and strings into a database, which is behind a DBIx::Class. These strings should be in UTF-8, and therefore my database is running in UTF-8. Unfortunatly some of these strings are bad, containing malformed UTF-8, so when I run it I'm getting an exception DBI Exception: DBD::Pg::st execute failed: ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0xb5 I thought that I could simply ignore the invalid ones, and worry about the malformed UTF-8 later, so using this code, it should flag & ignore the bad titles. if(not utf8::valid($title)){ $title="Invalid UTF-8"; } $data->title($title); $data->update(); However perl seems to think that the strings are valid, but it still throws the exceptions. How can I get perl to detect the bad UTF-8?

  I'm using JSON.org APIs for Java to use JSON in my JSP webapp, I know JSONObject doesn't preserve order of elements the way they are put into it and one has to use JSONArray for that but I don't know how to use it since I need to send key and value both as received from the database, and here I'm sending data to jQuery via JSON where I need the order of data to be maintained. Following is my servlet code, where I'm getting results from the database using ORDER BY and hence I want the order to be exact as returned from the database. Also this JSON object requested using $.post method of jQuery and is used to populate dropdown on reciever page.
