• Oracle collaborates with leading IT vendors on Cloud Management Standards

- by Anand Akela
During the last couple of days, two key specifications for cloud management standards have been announced. Oracle collaborated with leading technology vendors from the IT industry on both of these cloud management specifications. One of the specifications focuses "Infrastructure as a Service" ( IaaS ) cloud service model , while the other specification announced today focuses on "Platform as a Service" ( PaaS ) cloud service model. Please see The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing to learn more about IaaS and PaaS . Earlier today Oracle , CloudBees, Cloudsoft, Huawei, Rackspace, Red Hat, and Software AG announced the Cloud Application Management for Platforms (CAMP) specification that will be submitted to Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) for development of an industry standard, in an effort to help ensure interoperability for deploying and managing applications across cloud environments. Typical PaaS architecture - Source : CAMP specification The CAMP specification defines the artifacts and APIs that need to be offered by a PaaS cloud to manage the building, running, administration, monitoring and patching of applications in the cloud. Its purpose is to enable interoperability among self-service interfaces to PaaS clouds by defining artifacts and formats that can be used with any conforming cloud and enable independent vendors to create tools and services that interact with any conforming cloud using the defined interfaces. Cloud vendors can use these interfaces to develop new PaaS offerings that will interact with independently developed tools and components. In a separate cloud standards announcement yesterday, the Distributed Management Task Force ( DMTF ), the organization bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on systems management standards development, validation, promotion and adoption, released the new Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface (CIMI) specification. Oracle collaborated with various technology vendors and industry organizations on this specification. CIMI standardizes interactions between cloud environments to achieve interoperable cloud infrastructure management between service providers and their consumers and developers, enabling users to manage their cloud infrastructure use easily and without complexity. DMTF developed CIMI as a self-service interface for infrastructure clouds ( IaaS focus ) , allowing users to dynamically provision, configure and administer their cloud usage with a high-level interface that greatly simplifies cloud systems management. Mark Carlson, Principal Cloud Strategist at Oracle provides more details about CAMP and CIMI his blog . Stay Connected: Twitter | Face book | You Tube | Linked in | Newsletter

• WIF, ADFS 2 and WCF–Part 3: ADFS Setup

- by Your DisplayName here!
In part 1 of this series I briefly gave an overview of the ADFS / WS-Trust infrastructure. In part 2 we created a basic WCF service that uses ADFS for authentication. This part will walk you through the steps to register the service in ADFS 2. I could provide screenshots for all the wizard pages here – but since this is really easy – I just go through the necessary steps in textual form. Step 1 – Select Data Source Here you can decide if you want to import a federation metadata file that describes the service you want to register. In that case all necessary information is inside the metadata document and you are done. FedUtil (a tool that ships with WIF) can generate such metadata for the most simple cases. Another tool to create metadata can be found here. We choose ‘Manual’ here. Step 2 – Specify Display Name I guess that’s self explaining. Step 3 – Choose Profile Choose ‘ADFS 2 Profile’ here. Step 4 – Configure Certificate Remember that we specified a certificate (or rather a private key) to be used to decrypting incoming tokens in the previous post. Here you specify the corresponding public key that ADFS 2 should use for encrypting the token. Step 5 – Configure URL This page is used to configure WS-Federation and SAML 2.0p support. Since we are using WS-Trust you can leave both boxes unchecked. Step 6 – Configure Identifier Here you specify the identifier (aka the realm, aka the appliesTo) that will be used to request tokens for the service. This value will be used in the token request and is used by ADFS 2 to make a connection to the relying party configuration and claim rules. Step 7 – Configure Issuance Authorization Rules Here you can configure who is allowed to request token for the service. I won’t go into details here how these rules exactly work – that’s for a separate blog post. For now simply use the “Permit all users” option. OK – that’s it. The service is now registered at ADFS 2. In the next part we will finally look at the service client. Stay tuned…

Here's the latest update to the event agenda: 8:30am - 9:00am Registration and Continental Breakfast 9:00am - 9:45am Keynote 21st Century IT | Dr. James Baty VP, Global Enterprise Architecture Program, Oracle Imagine a time long, long ago. A time when servers were certified and dedicated to specific applications, when anything posted on an enterprise web site was from restricted, approved channels, and when we tried to limit the growth of 'dirty' data and storage. Today, applications are services running in the muti-tenant hybrid cloud. Companies beg their customers to tweet them, friend them, and publicly rate their products. And constantly analyzing a deluge of Internet, social and sensor data is the key to creating the next super-successful product, or capturing an evil terrorist. The old IT architecture was planned, dedicated, stable, controlled, with separate and well-defined roles. The new architecture is shared, dynamic, continuous, XaaS, DevOps. This keynote session describes the challenges and opportunities that the new business / IT paradigms present to the IT architecture and architects. 9:45am - 10:30am Technical Session Oracle Cloud: A Case Study in Building a Cloud | Anbu Krishnaswami Enterprise Architect, Oracle Building a Cloud can be challenging thanks to the complex requirements unique to Cloud computing and the massive scale typically associated with Cloud. Cloud providers can take an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) approach and build a cloud on virtualized commodity hardware, or they can take the Platform as a Service (PaaS) path, a service-oriented approach based on pre-configured, integrated, engineered systems. This presentation uses the Oracle Cloud itself as a case study in the use of engineered systems, demonstrating how the technical design of engineered systems is leveraged for building PaaS and SaaS Cloud services and a Cloud management infrastructure. The presentation will also explore the principles, patterns, best practices, and architecture views provided in Oracle's Cloud reference architecture. 10:30 am -10:45 am Break 10:45am-11:30am Technical Session Database as a Service | Markus Michalewicz Senior Principal Product Manager Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) New applications are now commonly built in a Cloud model, where the database is consumed as a service, and many established business processes are beginning to migrate to database as a service (DBaaS). This adoption of DBaaS is made possible by the availability of new capabilities in the database that enable resource pooling, dynamic resource management, model-based provisioning, metered use, and effective quality-of-service controls. This session will examine the catalog of database services at a large commercial bank to understand how these capabilities are enabling DBaaS for a wide range of needs within the enterprise. 11:30 am - 12:00 pm Panel Q&A Dr. James Baty, Anbu Krishnaswami, and Markus Michalewicz respond to audience questions. • Is this Ubuntu One DBus signal connection code correct?

- by Chris Wilson
This is my first time using DBus so I'm not entirely sure if I'm going about this the right way. I'm attempting to connect the the Ubuntu One DBus service and obtain login credentials for my app, however the slots I've connected to the DBus return signals detailed here never seem to be firing, despite a positive result being returned during the connection. Before I start looking for errors in the details relating to this specific service, could someone please tell me if this code would even work in the first place, or if I'm done something wrong here? int main() { UbuntuOneDBus *u1Dbus = new UbuntuOneDBus; if( u1Dbus->init() ){ qDebug() << "Message queued"; } } UbuntuOneDBus::UbuntuOneDBus() { service = "com.ubuntuone.Credentials"; path = "/credentials"; interface = "com.ubuntuone.CredentialsManagement"; method = "register"; signature = "a{ss} (Dict of {String, String})"; connectReturnSignals(); } bool UbuntuOneDBus::init() { QDBusMessage message = QDBusMessage::createMethodCall( service, path, interface, method ); bool queued = QDBusConnection::sessionBus().send( message ); return queued; } void UbuntuOneDBus::connectReturnSignals() { bool connectionSuccessful = false; connectionSuccessful = QDBusConnection::sessionBus().connect( service, path, interface, "CredentialsFound", "a{ss} (Dict of {String, String})", this, SLOT( credentialsFound() ) ); if( ! connectionSuccessful ) qDebug() << "Connection to DBus::CredentialsFound signal failed"; connectionSuccessful = QDBusConnection::systemBus().connect( service, path, interface, "CredentialsNotFound", "(nothing)", this, SLOT( credentialsNotFound() ) ); if( ! connectionSuccessful ) qDebug() << "Connection to DBus::CredentialsNotFound signal failed"; connectionSuccessful = QDBusConnection::systemBus().connect( service, path, interface, "CredentialsError", "a{ss} (Dict of {String, String})", this, SLOT( credential if( ! connectionSuccessful ) qDebug() << "Connection to DBus::CredentialsError signal failed"; } void UbuntuOneDBus::credentialsFound() { std::cout << "Credentials found" << std::endl; } void UbuntuOneDBus::credentialsNotFound() { std::cout << "Credentials not found" << std::endl; } void UbuntuOneDBus::credentialsError() { std::cout << "Credentials error" << std::endl; }

• Accessing SQL Server data from iOS apps

- by RobertChipperfield
Almost all mobile apps need access to external data to be valuable. With a huge amount of existing business data residing in Microsoft SQL Server databases, and an ever-increasing drive to make more and more available to mobile users, how do you marry the rather separate worlds of Microsoft's SQL Server and Apple's iOS devices? The classic answer: write a web service layer Look at any of the questions on this topic asked in Internet discussion forums, and you'll inevitably see the answer, "just write a web service and use that!". But what does this process gain? For a well-designed database with a solid security model, and business logic in the database, writing a custom web service on top of this just to access some of the data from a different platform seems inefficient and unnecessary. Desktop applications interact with the SQL Server directly - why should mobile apps be any different? The better answer: the iSql SDK Working along the lines of "if you do something more than once, make it shared," we set about coming up with a better solution for the general case. And so the iSql SDK was born: sitting between SQL Server and your iOS apps, it provides the simple API you're used to if you've been developing desktop apps using the Microsoft SQL Native Client. It turns out a web service remained a sensible idea: HTTP is much more suited to the Big Bad Internet than SQL Server's native TDS protocol, removing the need for complex configuration, firewall configuration, and the like. However, rather than writing a web service for every app that needs data access, we made the web service generic, serving only as a proxy between the SQL Server and a client library integrated into the iPhone or iPad app. This client library handles all the network communication, and provides a clean API. OSQL in 25 lines of code As an example of how to use the API, I put together a very simple app that allowed the user to enter one or more SQL statements, and displayed the results in a rather primitively formatted text field. The total amount of Objective-C code responsible for doing the work? About 25 lines. You can see this in action in the demo video. Beta out now - your chance to give us your suggestions! We've released the iSql SDK as a beta on the MobileFoo website: you're welcome to download a copy, have a play in your own apps, and let us know what we've missed using the Feedback button on the site. Software development should be fun and rewarding: no-one wants to spend their time writing boiler-plate code over and over again, so stop writing the same web service code, and start doing exciting things in the new world of mobile data!

• Using chunked encoding in a POST request to an asmx web service on IIS 6 generates a 404

- by user175869
Hi, I'm using a CXF client to communicate with a .net web service running on IIS 6. This request (anonymised): POST /EngineWebService_v1/EngineWebService_v1.asmx HTTP/1.1 Content-Type: text/xml; charset=UTF-8 SOAPAction: "http://.../Report" Accept: */* User-Agent: Apache CXF 2.2.5 Cache-Control: no-cache Pragma: no-cache Host: uat9.gtios.net Connection: keep-alive Transfer-Encoding: chunked followed by 7 chunks of 4089 bytes and one of 369 bytes, generates the following output after the first chunk has been sent: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found Content-Length: 103 Date: Wed, 10 Feb 2010 13:00:08 GMT Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: text/html Anyone know how to get IIS to accept chunked input for a POST? Thanks

• How to access the Principal from a Java service object without using FlexContext?

- by Marplesoft
We're building some Java objects that are exposed via BlazeDS to our flex client application. So basically the BlazeDS messagebroker servlet instantiates and invokes methods on these objects in response to client requests. Works great. We're using app server-based authentication and have set up a security constraint on the <destination> elements in the remoting-config.xml file element to prevent unauthenticated clients from being able to access these remote java objects. Again, works fine. However, there are several places within the implementation of these java objects where we want to get the currently logged on user's username. Right now we are doing this via FlexContext.getUserPrincipal(), which gives access to this but we have a nagging concern that we don't like the idea that the implementation of these objects (the service layer) has a hard dependency on a BlazeDS class. But we're not sure how else to get access to this. The same applies to accessing the ServletContext and such. Any ideas?

• What happens to the output to a log4net console appender in a Windows service?

- by uriDium
I have a console project that I have been working on. I added log4net to handle all my logging. In some places I have made use of the console appender. When I turn this application into a Windows Service should I just remove the console appender or what happens to that output? Does it just get lost? I would like to keep it if all possible because if I run it straight from the command prompt I would like to see the console output to help debug things.

• Why are error pages ignored in RESTEasy web service running on Tomcat?

- by Chandru
I'm developing a REST-ful web service using RESTEasy deployed on Tomcat. I've configured an error page which takes the exception's message and generates an XML based on it when any exception occurs during the request. This works fine for any application generated exceptions. However, if client sends an invalid XML which cannot be unmarshalled correctly, an javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException is thrown and Tomcat's default error page is used instead of mine. I have configured my error page to the error-code 500 in web.xml. Is using error pages the correct way to handle errors when using RESTEasy or is there an alternative way?

• Is using jquery to call a WCF Data Service from the UI violating the MVC pattern.

- by Lee Dale
I'm fairly new to ASP.Net MVC 2 and understand the MVC pattern in itself. But my question is what's the best way to populate dropdownlists in the UI sticking to the MVC pattern. Should I be going through the controller? Every article I've seen to do this shows how to do it using javascript and jquery. I have a test application that I'm re-writing in MVC2 I have my dropdowns working with jquery basically calling a WCF Data Service that returns JSON which populates the dropdowns. Seems to me though that this is bypassing the controller and going straight to the model therefore strictly violating the MVC pattern. Or am I missing something obvious here. You thoughts or best practices would be greatly welcome here. Thanks

• Deploy custom web service to sharepoint server(2007/2010)?

- by leif
According to MSDN, for deploying custom web service, we need to create *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files, and put them with .asmx together under _vti_bin folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\isapi). And put the dll under bin folder of the root of sharepoint virtual directory. It works correctly for me. However, i also found that if i put .asmx file under the root virtual directory without creating those *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files. It can work as well and much easier than the above way. So i'm wondering what's the potential issues in this way?

• Is this a correct way to host a WCF service?

- by mafutrct
For some testing code, I'd like to be able to host a WCF service in only a few lines. I figured I'd write a simple hosting class: public class WcfHost : IDisposable where Implementation : class where Contract : class { public readonly string Address = "net.tcp://localhost:8000/"; private ServiceHost _Host; public WcfHost () { _Host = new ServiceHost (typeof (Implementation)); var binding = new NetTcpBinding (); var address = new Uri (Address); _Host.AddServiceEndpoint ( typeof (Contract), binding, address); _Host.Open (); } public void Dispose () { ((IDisposable) _Host).Dispose (); } } That can be used like this: using (var host = new WcfHost<ImplementationClass, ContractClass> ()) { Is there anything wrong with this approach? Is there a flaw in the code (esp. about the disposing)?

• CFMX6.1 deplying on Websphere 6.1 Server: Error 500: The Security service is not available.

- by ahiru
I am deploying a CFMX6.1 application to a Websphere 6.1 server. The server starts up without any errors but when I goto the CF Adminstrator page (or any cf page) I get the following error: Error 500: The Security service is not available. Can you deploy CFMX6.1 to WS6.1? My searches on the internets seem to say yes and no. As far as the error goes I normally end up at a page that lists the same error with stacktrace but no answers. Am I just searching using the wrong question? Thanks.

• what is the right way to exit Windoes Service OnStart if configuration is wrong and nothing to do in

- by matti
Is something like this ok? protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { if (SomeApp.Initialize()) { SomeApp.StartMonitorAndWork(); base.OnStart(args); } } protected override void OnStop() { SomeApp.TearDown(); base.OnStop(); } Here Initialize reads a config file and if it's wrong there's nothing to do so service should STOP! If config is ok StartMonitorAndWork starts: Timer(new TimerCallback(DoWork), null, startTime, loopTime); and DoWork polls database periodically. The question is: "Is exiting OnStart without doing nothing enough if Initialize returns false? OR should there be something like this: private void ExitService() { this.OnStop(); System.Environment.Exit(1); } protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { if (ObjectFolderApp.Initialize()) { SomeApp.StartMonitorAndWork(); base.OnStart(args); } else { ExitService(); } } Thanks & BR - Matti

• What is an example of a website/service which _isn't_ REST?

- by montooner
So I just started digging into web tech, and I'm stuck on the concept of REST. Could someone clarify REST by giving me an example of what isn't rest? So, as far as I can tell, REST requires the server and client to both be in the same state at the end of every request-response HTTP transfer. Does that sound right? My understanding is that, if a client stores state information locally (which the server does not know about), that service is NOT rest. Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody here, I want to use mootools and SqueezBox class to handle a request to a RESTful service. I don't want to use any server-side script. I am using AJAX. I send a request to the following url using GET method. http://www.idevcenter.com/api/v1/links/links-upcoming.json but I receive a 404 error. Is it because cross-site scripting? here is my code: SqueezeBox.initialize({handler:'url',ajaxOptions:{method:'GET'}}); $('a.modal').addEvent('click',function(e){ new Event(e).stop(); SqueezeBox.fromElement($('a.modal')); }); In Firebug console, sometimes 'aborted' is shown and sometimes '404'.what is wrong with that?

• How to mock test a web service in PHPUnit across multiple tests?

- by scraton
I am attempting to test a web service interface class using PHPUnit. Basically, this class makes calls to a SoapClient object. I am attempting to test this class in PHPUnit using the "getMockFromWsdl" method described here: http://www.phpunit.de/manual/current/en/test-doubles.html#test-doubles.stubbing-and-mocking-web-services However, since I want to test multiple methods from this same class, every time I setup the object, I also have to setup the mock WSDL SoapClient object. This is causing a fatal error to be thrown: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class xxxx in C:\web\php5\PEAR\PHPUnit\Framework\TestCase.php(1227) : eval()'d code on line 15 How can I use the same mock object across multiple tests without having to regenerate it off the WSDL each time? That seems to be the problem.

Is JBehave a good choice for web service functional testing automation? We do use Soap UI to test manually. But we are planning to automate the functional and regression testing to reduce the release cycle time. Suggestions welcome.

• How to get Combobox.SelectedItem Return string value of what is selected instead of Service Reference Class?

- by Rohit Acharya
I currently have the following code for a button. The message box shows SilverlightApplication2.ServiceReference2.Employee instead of the text string selected by the user. The combobox items are being populated by a WCF service. As a result I am unable to pass it to the Async call. How do I get the string of what user selected? private void btnAdd_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { object selectedItem = comobo1.SelectedItem.ToString(); MessageBox.Show(selectedItem.ToString()); var proxy = new Service1Client(); proxy.GetAllEmployeesCompleted += proxy_GetAllEmployeesCompleted; proxy.GetAllEmployeesAsync(selectedItem.ToString()); }

• How do I pass the currently logged in user's credentials to a web service using Integrated Windows A

- by Chris Smith
I am having a frustrating time trying to do something with Perl that would take a couple of lines of code in C#, namely to call a web service on a Windows server that requires Integrated Windows Authentication. The most likely candidate I've found for success is a module called LWP::Authen::Ntlm, but all the examples I've googled require you to explicitly supply username, password and domain. I don't want to do that - I just want the request to use the credentials of the currently logged in user, a la CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials in .NET. Have any of you Perl gurus out there ever had to do this? Thanks.

• Is it possible to use AsyncTask in a Service class ?

- by Spredzy
Everything is in the title. On the official documentations it is stated that Note that services, like other application objects, run in the main thread of their hosting process and AsyncTask only works if it is executed in the UIThread. So is it possible to use AsyncTask in a Service class? I am trying to do so but I'm always getting the same error 05-01 18:09:25.487: ERROR/JavaBinder(270): java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError ... 05-01 18:09:25.487: ERROR/JavaBinder(270): Caused by: java.lang.RuntimeException: Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare() Am I doing something wrong or is this just impossible ?

• [C#] How to consume web service adheres to the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern?

- by codemonkie
I am following the example from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8wy069k1.aspx to consume a web service implemented (by 3rd party) using the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern. However, my program needs to do multiple calls to the DoStuffAsync() hence will get back as many DoStuffCompleted. I chose the overload which takes an extra parameter - Object userState to distinguish them. My first question is: Is it valid to cast a GUID to Object as below, where GUID is used to generate unique taskID? Object userState = Guid.NewGuid(); Secondly, do I need to spawn off a new thread for each DoStuffAsync() call, since I am calling it multiple times? Also, would be nice to have some online examples or tutorials on this subject. (I've been googling for it the whole day and didn't get much back) Many thanks
