• Using screen to monitor non-interactive scripts (or some other solution)

  I have some autonomous scripts that run commands on remote machines over ssh. These scripts rely on getting stdout, stderr, and the return code of each command run. I want to be able to monitor the progress of the scripts on each target machine so that I can see if something has hung and possibly intervene if necessary. My initial idea was to have the scripts run commands in a screen session, so that the person monitoring could simply attach to the session with screen -x. However, it was hard to do that from a script since screen is an interactive program. I can send a command to the screen session with screen -S session -X stuff "command^M", but then I don't get the output and return code that I need back. My second idea was to put script /path/to/log in ~/.bash_profile and log the entire session to a file. Then the monitoring person could simply tail the log file. However, this doesn't provide the interactivity that I was looking for. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

• Can't ssh from CentOS 6.5 to SUSE LINUX 10.1

  We have a quite old installation of SUSE LINUX 10.1 (i586) in the office. The problem shortly: I can successfully ssh to it from machines in the same LAN (192.168.1.0) and not from others (that are in 10.23.0.0). The SuSE has SSH server openssh-4.2p1-18.12. I have ruled out the firewall and hosts.allow and hosts.deny files. • Unable to connect to SQL Database (can the password be reset)

  I have recently joined a company which has an SQL 2005 Server running a few databases. The server looks like no one has touched it in a couple of years and has this week it ran out of disk space. After a quick hard drive scan it looks like some of the databases have become a little bloated and particularly the Sharepoint_config~*~_log and WSS_Content_log.ldf have grown to about 15GB. I have been able to log into a couple of the other databases and use the shrinkfile command to free up disk space but for some reason I am unable to log into the sharepoint and Microsoft#SSEE databases (which gives me the "cannot connect to Sharepoint, a network related or instance specific error occurred..." when I try and connect) I can see that the database is running via the SQL surface configuration and I have made sure that the remote connection settings allow me to connect locally but I am still unable to log in either with windows authentication or locally. Is there any way to reset or recover the database login details so I can get in? ( I have tried logging in with all the administrative passwords I can find and after tracking down the company who installed it in the first place I found out that they have no idea what the password could have been)

I now have another webserver listening on one port, and i'd like to what changes to make to my config to flow traffic by hostname as well. • Identifying test machines in analytics logs

  We're just beginning to add analytics to our SaaS application, to begin (among other things) billing clients based on usage. The problem we're running into is there's a few circumstances where our support team will simulate a log in into production to try to reproduce reported issues with a client's configuration. When they log in, an entry will be made into our analytics logs that their specific account has logged in, which we use to calculate billing. A few ideas we had to solve this: 1) We log IP addresses as well as machine keys for each PC that logs in - we could filter out known IP addresses and/or machine keys belonging to support. The drawback is we have to maintain a list of keys / addresses manually. 2) If support (or anyone else internal) runs our application in debug mode (as opposed to release), it will not report analytics. This is fine, as long as support / anyone else remembers to switch to debug mode. 3) Include some sort of reg key / similar setting required to be set when configuring a production system in order to send analytics. Again, fine, as long as our infrastructure team remembers to set the reg key or setting. All of these approaches require some sort of human involvement, which we all know can be iffy at best. Has anyone run into a similar situation? Is there an automated approach to this problem? (PS Of course, we shouldn't be testing in production, but there are a few one-off instances with customer set up that we can't reproduce without logging in as them in production. This is the only time we do so, and this is the case I'm talking about in this question.)

• Passenger and ServerAlias not cooperating

  I have a ruby application that runs on a server with multiple IP addresses and mutliple vhosts. Here is the configuration of the problematic virtual host: <VirtualHost 10.0.0.10:80> ServerName realname.example.com ServerAlias alias.example.com DocumentRoot /var/www/sites/example/current/public <Directory /var/www/sites/example/current/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/example_error_log CustomLog /var/log/httpd/example_access_log common RailsEnv production RackEnv production </VirtualHost> When I pull up realname.example.com the Ruby on Rails application works correctly. On the other hand alias.example.com just gives me Not Found: / I'm fairly certain the correct vhost is getting used because alias.example.com produces a 404 in the correct log file. I've tried adding logging to the Passenger config and it seems to indicate that Passenger is getting the request. Note: I can't redirect alias.example.com to realname.example.com. realname is accessed using a CDN, whereas alias is directly accessed. Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working? I've been banging my head for days and I've got a similar configuration in QA that works as expected.

• How to find the reason for a weekly downtime on an Ubuntu web server hosted by AWS?

  We started monitoring our web server using Pingdom and found out that we have a downtime of a few minutes every Sunday at 0:00 UTC. The test runs every minute and checks if a successful HTTP response (code 200) is returned on port 80. The test fails due to a timeout (no response after 30 seconds). Here's what we've already checked – without success: Since we run our webserver behind a load balancer, I've set the Pingdom test on the load balancer's public DNS and the webserver's public DNS in order to find out if there's a problem with the AWS load balancer – both tests return the same result We set up Munin on our webserver. Everything looked fine even after the failure. Since the last failure lasted only 2 minutes I suppose Munin couldn't capture a potential problem (it only checks every 5 minutes) I have checked /var/log/apache2/error.log and /var/log/syslog for suspicious entries I have checked /etc/cron.weekly and /etc/crontab for suspicious entries I have searched for files created or last-modified during 0:00 and 0:15 using this method: touch -t 201209020000 start touch -t 201209020015 end find / -newer start -and ! -newer end (nothing found) Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Any proposals on how to find the reason for this behavior? It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on an AWS m1.large instance. Thanks!

• Can't login after upgrading to Windows 8.1

  This afternoon, I upgraded my work laptop from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I had previously had a local account, but after the upgrade, it prompted me to enter my windows account credentials, which I had set up beforehand at some point. I entered my password and clicked next, went through another screen or two, grew tired with the process, and clicked whatever the equivalent button to "skip this step" that I was presented with. Now I can't log in. Not with my (previous) local account password, and not with my windows account password. It's a Dell with biometric identification, which I had set up previously, so I put my finger on the reader and it complained that I couldn't use that fingerprint because I had changed my password. But, I hadn't wittingly changed my password at all. I assume that what happened is that, by entering my credentials, my local account was tied to the Windows account, but because I cancelled the process partway through, something went wrong and I cannot log in. A few questions: 1) How do I log in with my windows account credentials? Should LOCALMACHINENAME\username, which was my previous login method, still work for the Windows account? When I booted to safemode it prompted me with WindowsAccount\myemailaddress, which allowed me to login there, but the regular login doesn't accept the '@' symbol. 2) Is there any way to make that account local-only again? I can't find any way of doing it. 3) I managed to enable the local administrator account and get back into the box; failing all else, is there a quick way to migrate my old profile over to a new user?

• Why won't sql server express 2008 service restart after I enable TCP/IP Protocol?

  Whenever I enable TCP/IP connections on my SQL Server Express 2008 database server running on Windows XP SP3, I cannot restart the service, it simply states "The request failed or did respond in a timely fashion". • My system is always disk-bound (the disk light is always on). Why is this?

  I have been given a laptop by the good folks at my company on which to do my work (Java development). I usually use eclipse as my primary development platform. The laptop is a Dell D830 and runs Windows 7 - 32 bit. Although the processor supports a 64 bit instruction-set, licensing limits me to running the 32 bit OS. The HDD is a WD1600BEVT (Western Digital). I have noticed that my disk is always very slow. Windows start up is usually pretty quick, however as soon as I log on, my disk light stays on and usually, the laptop takes about 4 minutes (after logging in -- immediately upon getting the prompt to press Ctrl + Alt + Del to log in) before it's usable. Questions: Is this expected behavior? What can I do to examine the disk and determine the cause of the problem? What can I do to improve my disk's performance? Any optimizations you may be able to suggest? Other Questions: Some have suggested running Process Monitor (from sysinternals), but how would i get the log since start up? Instead of trying to fix this myself, should I simply push this onto the system administrator? Thanks all.

• rsync via cron. How do I enable logging?

  Hi all I'm backing up a remote server to another computer using rsync. In cron.daily I have a file with this: rsync -avz -e ssh [email protected]:/ /mybackup/ It uses a public / private key pair to login. This seems to work well most of the time however, I've (foolishly) only ever really checked it by looking at the dates on some important files (MySQL dumps) that I know change every day. Obviously, an error could occur after that file. Sometimes it fails. When I run it manually, something like "client reset" sometimes happens. What is the best way to log it so that I can check with certainty if it completed or not? The cron log doesn't indicate any errors. I haven't tried it but the rsync man page on the oldish version of CentOS on the backup machine doesn't show the --log-file option. I guess I could redirect stdout with but I don't really want to know about every file. I just want to know if it all worked or not.. Thanks

But when I select the combo to change the value, I can see the data and when I change the value, I can see the displayFiel! I don't understand what's the problem? • Facebook Oauth Logout

  I have an application that integrates with Facebook using Oauth 2. I can authorize with FB and query their REST and Graph APIs perfectly well, but when I authorize an active browser session is created with FB. I can then log-out of my application just fine, but the session with FB persists, so if anyone else uses the browser they will see the previous users FB account (unless the previous user manually logs out of FB also). The steps I take to authorize are: Call [LINK: graph.facebook.com/oauth/authorize?client_id...] This step opens a Facebook login/connect window if the user's browser doesn't already have an active FB session. Once they log-in to facebook they redirect to my site with a code I can exchange for an oauth token. Call [LINK: graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?client_id..] with the code from (1) Now I have an Oauth Token, and the user's browser is logged into my site, and into FB. I call a bunch of APIs to do stuff: i.e. [LINK: graph.facebook.com/me?access_token=..] Lets say my user wants to log out of my site. The FB terms and conditions demand that I perform Single Sign Off, so when the user logs out of my site, they also are logged out of Facebook. There are arguments that this is a bit daft, but I'm happy to comply if there is any way of actually achieving that. I have seen suggestions that: A. I use the Javascript API to logout: FB.Connect.logout(). Well I tried using that, but it didn't work, and I'm not sure exactly how it could, as I don't use the Javascript API in any way on my site. The session isn't maintained or created by the Javascript API so I'm not sure how it's supposed to expire it either. B. Use [LINK: facebook.com/logout.php]. This was suggested by an admin in the Facebook forums some time ago. The example given related to the old way of getting FB sessions (non-oauth) so I don't think I can apply it in my case. C. Use the old REST api expireSession or revokeAuthorization. I tried both of these and while they do expire the Oauth token they don't invalidate the session that the browser is currently using so it has no effect, the user is not logged out of Facebook. I'm really at a bit of a loose end, the Facebook documentation is patchy, ambiguous and pretty poor. The support on the forums is non-existant, at the moment I can't even log in to the facebook forum, and aside from that, their own FB Connect integration doesn't even work on the forum itself. • Facebook connect displaying invite friends dialog and closing on completion

  I'm trying to create a Facebook Connect application that displays a friend invite dialog within the page using Facebook's Javascript API (through a FBMLPopupDialog). The trouble is to display a friend invite dialog you use a multi-friend form which requires an action="url" attribute that represents the URL to redirect your page to when the user completes or skips the form. The problem is that I want to just close the FBMLPopupDialog (the same behavior as if the user just hit the 'X' button on the popup dialog). The best I can do is redirect the user back to the page they were on basically a reload but they lose all AJAX/Flash application state. I'm wondering if any Facebook Connect developers have run into this issue and have a good way to simply display a friend invite "lightbox" dialog within their website where they don't want to "refresh" or "redirect" when the user finishes. My problem is that when I play it out it plays vis the speaker phone. I want it to play out via the ear piece on the device. I tried providing the XmlContentBuilder with an absolute path. That worked fine when I compiled with MXMLC via Ant, but still didn't work when I used MXMLC in the command-line... • singleton vs factory?

  i've got 3 Log classes that all implements iLog interface: DatabaseLog FileLog ScreenLog there can only be one instance of them. initially i though of using single pattern for each class but then i thought why not use a factory for instantiation instead, cause then i wont have to create single pattern for each one of them and for all future Log classes. and maybe someone would want them as multiple objects in the future. so my questions is: should i use factory or singleton pattern here?

Now, the Java versions on the two machines are slightly different. Both the machines have Sun's java, the Linux machine has 1.6.0_10, while the Windows machine has 1.6.0_08, or maybe 07 or 06, I can't remember the exact number right now, and don't have the machine at hand.
