  I have a SharePoint 2010 site with a document library for storing Excel files. If someone is editing an Excel file (using stand-alone Excel, not Excel services), everyone else will be forced to open the file read-only until the first person is done editing. Is there a way around this? What I want is to allow two or more people to be able to edit the file at the same time. Also, I don't want people to overwrite each other. Instead, I'd like SharePoint to merge their changes. Is this possible in SharePoint 2010?

  I looking for a simple way to wire the homepage of my website so that it fires off a Push notification message to my iPhone every time someone lands on the page (just visiting in their browser). I'm aware this could become annoying! I currently send regular notifications to my iPhone using cron and curl to check sites / RSS feeds for change and then fire to to the Prowl API who in turn send it to my iPhone - like so: curl https://prowl.weks.net/publicapi/add -F apikey=$apikey -F priority=$priority -F application="$app" -F event="$eventname" -F description="$description" Could I do something similar from with the HTML of the homepage - call a script on my server which in turn fires a similar curl request above? Maybe with Javascript or PHP? Ideally I'd like the loading and rendering of me webpage to be uninterrupted by the call. • TabWidget Activity Handling - Does it Create a New Activity EVERY Time?

  When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order––A, B, A, C, A, B––how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?

• How can I make datagridview can only select the cells in the same column at a time?

  I am using winforms to develop my application. And I set my datagridview control's selectionmode to "CellSelect", and this allow the user to select as many cells as he want which spread over several columns; but I want to constraint my user can only select cells in single column at a time, and there isn't any such kind of selectionmode for me. So If I want to implement this, how can I extend the datagridview class ? I also think that I can check in eventhandler whenever the selection cells are changed, through which I might make the user can not select cells spread over multiple columns, but this is not that good, I think. Can any other people help me to find out a better solution ?

• Why does my NSWindow only receive mouseOver events the first time?

  I have an application where a borderless window is shown and hidden, using orderOut and orderFront. When it is visible, I want the it to become the key window when the mouse moves over it. So far I've done this: In awakeFromNib I have set its first responder to itself. In the window's constructor I set accepts mouse events to YES. In the mouseMoved method, I use makeKeyAndOrderToFront. My problem is, that this only works the first time I move the mouse over the window. After that, it doesn't receive any mouseOver events. I've tried checking the firstResponder but as far as I can tell it never changes from the window. Any ideas what I can do to get this working?

  I'm developing an app that checks several conditions during an incoming phone call. The main parts of the app are a BroadcastReceiver listening for Intents related to the phone's status and a local Service checking the conditions. At the moment the service is started each time an incoming call is detected and is stopped when the phone status changed back to idle. Now I'm wondering if this procedure is correct and whether it is reasonable to start and stop the service related to the phone's status. Or would it be better to let the service run regardless of the phone's status and bind/unbind to/from it when needed. Are there any performance issues I would have to think about? Perhaps it is more expensive to start/stop a service than letting it run and communicate with it. Are there any best practices out there regarding the implementation of services?

• Using SqlCacheDependency to get real time updates? - ASP.NET

  I would like to display real time updates on a web page (based on a status field in a database table that is altered by an external process). Based on my research, there are several ways of doing this. Long Polling (Comet) - This seems to be complex to implement Regular Polling - I can have an AJAX method trigger a database hit every 5seconds to get the current status. But I fear this will have performance issues. Then I read about using SqlCacheDependency - basically the cache gets invalidated based on a field in the table. I am assuming I can use the event trigerred when the cache is invalidated to show the new update to the user? What's an easy solution that will not have performance issues? anyone?

• VS2010 patce: why it's take so muce time to install it?

  Visual Studio 2010 RC has a few of patches release. For more information about them take a look here. What I'm expect from patch program, is to replace a few dll's of the program to a new fixed version of them. But when I run each of this 3 patches, they take a lot of time (5 minutes each), and you think that the program was frozen because the progress bar stay on the begging. This is question may not be so important, but it really interesting me to know, why this happens? It's really confusing to see that each VS2010 (or Microsoft in general) is frozen to 4-5 minutes.

• Why doesn't Maven's mvn clean ever work the first time?

  Nine times out of ten when I run mvn clean on my projects I experience a build error. I have to execute mvn clean multiple times until the build error goes away. Does anyone else experience this? Is there any way to fix this within Maven? If not, how do you get around it? I wrote a bat file that deletes the target folders and that works well, but it's not practical when you are working on multiple projects. I am using Maven 2.2.1. • Air XmlHttpRequest time out if remote server is offline?

  I'm writing an AIR application that communicates with a server via XmlHttpRequest. The problem that I'm having is that if the server is unreachable, my asynchronous XmlHttpRequest never seems to fail. My onreadystatechange handler detects the OPENED state, but nothing else. Is there a way to make the XmlHttpRequest time out? Do I have to do something silly like using setTimeout() to wait a while then abort() if the connection isn't established? Edit: Found this, but in my testing, wrapping my xmlhttprequest.send() in a try/catch block or setting a value on xmlhttprequest.timeout (or TimeOut or timeOut) doesn't have any affect.

  Hi, I'm choosing between AMQP (RabbitMQ) vs XMPP (eJabberd) for my browser-based flash-free javascript powered real-time turn-based game. I don't know much about AMQP and XMPP protocol. I would like to use PHP for user-authorization and some data store-retrieve with MySQL. As far as I found out, RabbitMQ has PHP clients but eJabberd not. There is a good book 'Pro XMPP Programming with JS and jQuery' from Wrox but there is no example with PHP. • my realtime network receiving time differs a lot, anyone can help?

  I wrote a program using tcpip sockets to send commands to a device and receive the data from the device. The data size would be around 200kB to 600KB. The computer is directly connected to the device using a 100MB network. I found that the sending packets always arrive at the computer at 100MB/s speed (I have debugging information on the unit and I also verified this using some network monitoring software), but the receiving time differs a lot from 40ms to 250ms, even if the size is the same (I have a receiving buffer about 700K and the receiving window of 8092 bytes and changing the window size does not change anything). The phenomena differs also on different computers, but on the same computer the problem is very stable. For example, receiving 300k bytes on computer a would be 40ms, but it may cost 200ms on another computer. I have disabled firewall, antivirus, all other network protocol except the TCP/IP. Any experts on this can give me some hints?

The hour will most likely be during the night, because that's when nobody is accessing the folder (it's outside working hours). Is there a way to trigger that event at that certain hour? I know about timers, but is there an easier way to do this without a timer that ticks and checks to see what time it is? Thanks.

  I have been profiling javascript on my page that uses dojo widgets. I don't use explicit parsing - the parser runs on page load. What I noticed is that if I clear browser cache before refreshing the page, dojo parsing takes much more time than if all the files are already cached. Note that we build all the required dojo modules into a layer (a single file), so we don't lazy-load any js files. I wonder if dojo parsing process depends on images and css resources, as far as I know it only instantiates widgets and injects dom nodes. Do you have any ideas why dojo parser runs longer (2-3 times longer in my case) when the cache is cleared?

  I've optimized my code to use only lightweight libraries. I'm even using the low level datastore rather than JDO. And my cold start CPU usage has dropped from about 5 seconds to about 1.5 seconds. However, the time it takes to respond is often about 4.5 seconds, though it varies a lot. • Python subprocess: 64 bit windows server PIPE doesn't exist :(

  I have a GUI that launches selected python scripts and runs it in cmd next to the gui window. I am able to get my launcher to work on my (windows xp 32 bit) laptop but when I upload it to the server(64bit windows iss7) I am running into some issues. The script runs, to my knowledge but spits back no information into the cmd window. My script is a bit of a Frankenstein that I have hacked and slashed together to get it to work I am fairly certain that this is a very bad example of the subprocess module. Just wondering if i could get a hand :).   Hello, I try to understand the memory management in ObjectiveC and still some things are a misery for me. I've got an instance variable: NSMutableArray *postResultsArray; when a button is clicked in the UI I create new array: self.postResultsArray = [NSMutableArray array]; then I add some objects to the array and when the whole operation is done I would like to release the array: [self.postResultsArray release]; (I assume that all the objects stoed in the array will be released along with the array). The problem appears when I click the button again and in the code I want to create the array again with: self.postResultsArray = [NSMutableArray array]; I get: [CFArray release]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x3d9e390 Can't I initialize the same instance variable for the second time? or maybe I should not release it? and if so, why?
