• Having issues with initializing character array

  Ok, this is for homework about hashtables, but this is the simple stuff I thought I was able to do from earlier classes, and I'm tearing my hair out. The professor is not being responsive enough, so I thought I'd try here. We have a hashtable of stock objects.The stock objects are created like so: stock("IBM", "International Business Machines", 2573, date(date::MAY, 23, 1967)) my constructor looks like: stock::stock(char const * const symbol, char const * const name, int sharePrice, date priceDate): symbol(NULL), name(NULL), sharePrice(sharePrice), dateOfPrice(priceDate) { setSymbol(symbol); setName(name); } and setSymbol looks like this: (setName is indentical): void stock::setSymbol(const char* symbol) { if (this->symbol) delete [] this->symbol; this->symbol = new char[strlen(symbol)+1]; strcpy(this->symbol,symbol); } and it refuses to allocate on the line this->symbol = new char[strlen(symbol)+1]; with a std::bad_alloc. name and symbol are declared char * name; char * symbol; I feel like this is exactly how I've done it in previous code.I'm sure it's something silly with pointers. Can anyone help?

• How to manage data access / preloading efficiently using web services in C# ?

  Hello all, Ok, this is very "generic" question. We currently have a SQL Server database for which we need to develop an application in ASP.NET with will contain all the business logic in C# Web Services. The thing is that, architecturally speaking, I'm not sure how to design the web service and the data management. There are many things to consider : We need have very rapid access to data. Right now, we have over a million "sales" and "purchases" record from which we need to often calculate and load the current stock for a given day according to a serie of parameter. I'm not sure how we should preload the data and keep the data in the Web Service. Doing a stock calculation within a SQL query will be very lengthy. They currently have a stock calculation application that preloads all sales and purchases for the day and afterwards calculate the stock on the code-side. We want to develop powerful reporting tools. We want to implement a "pivot table" but not sure how to implement it and have good performances. For the reasons above, I'm not sure how to design the data model. Anybody can give me any guidelines on how to start, or from their personnal experiences (what have you done in the past ?) I'm not sure if it's possible to make a bounty even though the question is new (I'd put 300 rep on it, since I really need something). If you know how, let me know. Thanks

  I have a table called Sessions with two datetime columns: start and end. For each day (YYYY-MM-DD) there can be many different start and end times (HH:ii:ss). I need to find a daily average of all the differences between these start and end times. An example of a few rows would be: start: 2010-04-10 12:30:00 end: 2010-04-10 12:30:50 start: 2010-04-10 13:20:00 end: 2010-04-10 13:21:00 start: 2010-04-10 14:10:00 end: 2010-04-10 14:15:00 start: 2010-04-10 15:45:00 end: 2010-04-10 15:45:05 start: 2010-05-10 09:12:00 end: 2010-05-10 09:13:12 ... The time differences (in seconds) for 2010-04-10 would be: 50 60 300 5 The average for 2010-04-10 would be 103.75 seconds. I would like my query to return something like: day: 2010-04-10 ave: 103.75 day: 2010-05-10 ave: 72 ... I can get the time difference grouped by start date but I'm not sure how to get the average. I tried using the AVG function but I think it only works directly on column values (rather than the result of another aggregate function). This is what I have: SELECT TIME_TO_SEC(TIMEDIFF(end,start)) AS timediff FROM Sessions GROUP BY DATE(start) Is there a way to get the average of timediff for each start date group? I'm new to aggregate functions so maybe I'm misunderstanding something. If you know of an alternate solution please share. I could always do it ad hoc and compute the average manually in PHP but I'm wondering if there's a way to do it in MySQL so I can avoid running a bunch of loops. Thanks.

• Internet Explorer randomly drops sessions between pages in cakePHP

  Hello everyone, I've come across an extremely unusual bug that my team has literally no idea how to solve. Doing some research, I found some similar solutions that I thought would work, but alas did not. Here is my situation, let me know if I can provide additional insight to help solve the problem. The first step is that someone chooses a country via a flash map. Flash passes this region name (as well as a date) through the URL, which we then convert to a session. The next page contains no Flash and doesn't display the selected region, but it does hold on to it for further down the process. Everything works perfectly in Safari and Firefox; however, in IE sometimes unexpected results occur. Frequently (but not always), the session is dropped completely and no sessions are stored between the first and 2nd pages. Here are the steps that I have taken thus far, unsuccessfully: 1. Changed Security from Medium - Low 2. Changed CheckUserAgent from True - False 3. Changed storing of sessions from PHP - Database Some additional information that may be useful: I have tried printing out the session data in Debug (debug($_SESSION) on my view file and debug set to 2 in config). In Internet Explorer everything prints out as expected EXCEPT when the region and date don't get set. For example: If the region and date don't get set NOTHING is printed out for debug. I don't get the session details at the top, and I don't get the normal dump of calls at the bottom of the page either. I am not using redirection on these pages. Please let me know if you have ANY idea of what is causing this or any solutions. I am beyond frustrated and have tried as much as I can to solve this. Thanks!

• LINQ to Entities question about orderby and null collections.

  I am currently developing a forum. I am new to LINQ and EF. In my forum I have a display that shows a list of topics with the most recent topics first. The problem is that "most recent" is relative to the topic's replies. So I don't want to order the list by the topic's posted date, rather I want to order the list by the topic's last reply's posted date. So that topics with newer replies pop back to the top of the list. This is rather simple if I knew that every topic had at least one reply; I would just do this: var topicsQuery = from x in board.Topics orderby x.Replies.Last().PostedDate descending select x; However, in many cases the topic has no replies. In which case I would like to use the topic's posted date instead. Is there a way within my linq query to order by x.PostedDate in the event that the topic has no replies? I'm getting confused by this and any help would be appreciated. With the above query, it breaks on topics with no replies because of the x.Replies.Last() which assumes there are replies. LastOrDefault() doesn't work because I need to access the PostedDate property which also assumes a reply exists. Thanks in advance for any insight.

• Sprint velocity calculations

  Need some advice on working out the team velocity for a sprint. Our team normally consists of about 4 developers and 2 testers. The scrum master insists that every team member should contribute equally to the velocity calculation i.e. we should not distinguish between developers and testers when working out how much we can do in a sprint. The is correct according to Scrum, but here's the problem. Despite suggestions to the contrary, testers never help with non-test tasks and developers never help with non-dev tasks, so we are not cross functional team members at all. Also, despite various suggestions, testers normally spend the first few days of each sprint waiting for something to test. The end result is that typically we take on far more dev work than we actually have capacity for in the sprint. For example, the developers might contribute 20 days to the velocity calculation and the testers 10 days. If you add up the tasks after sprint planning though, dev tasks add up to 25 days and test tasks add up to 5 days. How do you guys deal with this sort of situation?

• Plotting an Arc in Discrete Steps

  Good afternoon, Background My question relates to the plotting of an arbitrary arc in space using discrete steps. It is unique, however, in that I am not drawing to a canvas in the typical sense. The firmware I am designing is for a gcode interpreter for a CNC mill that will translate commands into stepper motor movements. Now, I have already found a similar question on this very site, but the methodology suggested (Bresenham's Algorithm) appears to be incompatable for moving an object in space, as it only relies on the calculation of one octant of a circle which is then mirrored about the remaining axes of symmetry. Furthermore, the prescribed method of calculation an arc between two arbitrary angles relies on trigonometry (I am implementing on a microcontroller and would like to avoid costly trig functions, if possible) and simply not taking the steps that are out of the range. Finally, the algorithm only is designed to work in one rotational direction (e.g. counterclockwise). Question So, on to the actual question: Does anyone know of a general-purpose algorithm that can be used to "draw" an arbitrary arc in discrete steps while still giving respect to angular direction (CW / CCW)? The final implementation will be done in C, but the language for the purpose of the question is irrelevant. Thank you in advance.   Hello, I'm trying to export data to a csv file, as there are chinese characters in the data i had to use unicode.. but after adding the preamble for unicode, the commas are not recognized as delimiters and all data are now written to the first column. I'm not sure what is wrong. Below is my code which i wrote in a .ashx file. • Displaying same record twice- SQL Reporting Services

  Ok, here's the situation: I need to display the same record in two different sections. stupid i know, but here's why. The Report I am building is grouped by one Field, called Day. Each record has date/times, an expected arrival date time, and an expected departure date/time. so, at this point we have something like this: Day..............Arrival Time..................Departure Time 18/5.............18/5 9.00am.........19/5 11.00am The boss only wants to show times that relate to the current day in the arrive/depart coloumns (easy enough with expressions), which ends up like this: Day..............Arrival Time..................Departure Time 18/5..............9.00am.........................- the next thing he wants is to display the departing time in the correct day 'group', but as you can imagine as soon as you move to the next row, well you move to the next row of the table. So the question is: is there anyway to display the same record on multiple coloumns? Have i missed something or have i got an unsolvable problem? NOTE: this is not the only data in my table either. there is (for example) a name coloumn which also needs to be displayed on both days.

• How does one implement storage/retrieval of smart-search/mailbox features?

  Hi All, I have a question regarding implementation of smart-search features. For example, consider something like "smart mailboxes" in various email applications. Let's assume you have your data (emails) stored in a database and, depending on the field for which the query will be created, you present different options to the end user. At the moment let's assume the Subject, Verb, Object approach… For instance, say you have the following: SUBJECTs: message, to_address, from_address, subject, date_received VERBs: contains, does_not_contain, is_equal_to, greater_than, less_than OBJECTs: ??????? Now, in case it isn't clear, I want a table structure (although I'm not opposed to an external XMLesque file of some sort) to store (and later retrieve/present) my criteria for smart searches/mailboxes for later use. As an example, using SVO I could easily store then reconstruct a query for "date between two dates" -- simply use "date greater than" AND "date less than". However, what if, in the same smart search, I wanted a "between" OR'ed with another criterion? You can see that it might get out of hand -- not necessarily in the query creation (as that is rather simplistic), but in the option presentation and storage mechanism. Perhaps I need to think more on a more granular level. Perhaps I need to simply allow the user to select AND or OR for each entry independently instead of making it an ALL OR NOTHING type smart search (i.e. instead of MATCH ALL or MATCH ANY, I need to simply allow them to select -- I just don't want it to turn into a Hydra). Any input would be most appreciated. My apologies if the question is a bit incoherent. It is late, and I my brain is toast. Best.

• Shortcut to create automatic properties using Visual Studio 2008/2010 or Resharper 5

  I have a class that contains a load of properties that contain results of some calculations e.g: public class Results { public double Result1 { get; set; } public double Result2 { get; set; } } In a different class I am doing calculations to populate the above properties, e.g: public class Calc { private Results Calc() { Results res = new Results(); res.Result1 = ... some calculation res.Result2 = ... some other calculation res.Result3 = ... // not yet defined in 'Results' class return res; } } When I am writing the Calc class, 'Result3' will be highlighted in red as it is not yet defined in the 'Results' class. Currently I am using the Resharper ALT-Enter shortcut, selecting "Create Property 'Result3'" which will create the following code int the 'Results' class: public double Result3 { get { throw new NotImplementedException(); } set { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } Which I need to manually change to: public double Result3 { get; set; } Then I use the CTRL-Shift-Backspace shortcut to take me back to the 'Calc' class. How can I easily create automatic properties in the 'Results' class if they are not yet defined directly from the 'Calc' class?

• How SQLite on Android handles long strings?

  I'm wondering how Android's implementation of SQLite handles long Strings. Reading from online documentation on sqlite, it said that strings in sqlite are limited to 1 million characters. My strings are definitely smaller. I'm creating a simple RSS application, and after parsing a html document, and extracting text, I'm having problem saving it to a database. I have 2 tables in database, feeds and articles. RSS feeds are correctly saved and retrieved from feeds table, but when saving to the articles table, logcat is saying that it cannot save extracted text to it's column. I don't know if other columns are making problems too, no mention of them in logcat. I'm wondering, since text is from an article on web, are signs like (",',;) creating problems? Is Android automaticaly escaping them, or I have to do that. • Trouble creating a SQL query

  I've been thinking about how to compose this SQL query for a while now, but after thinking about it for a few hours I thought I'd ask the SO community to see if they have any ideas. Here is a mock up of the relevant portion of the tables: contracts id date ar (yes/no) term payments contract_id payment_date The object of the query is to determine, per month, how many payments we expect, vs how many payments we received. conditions for expecting a payment Expected payments begin on contracts.term months after contracts.date, if contracts.ar is "yes". Payments continue to be expected until the month after the first missed payment. There is one other complication to this: payments might be late, but they need to show up as if they were paid on the date expected. The data is all there, but I've been having trouble wrapping my head around the SQL query. I am not an SQL guru - I merely have a decent amount of experience handling simpler queries. I'd like to avoid filtering the results in code, if possible - but without your help that may be what I have to do. • How do I update a webpage with the progress of a server-side task?

  Hi everyone, I'm working on a web project that takes the results from a survey type application, and runs them through a bunch of calculations to come up with some recommended suggestions for the user. Now, this calculation might take a minute or so, so I'd like to be able to give the user some update on it's progress. Obviously, the quick and dirty solution would be to put up a message along the lines of "Please wait while we calculate your recommendations" with a spinning gear type graphic. (or whatever, you get the point..). Once the task completes, I'd redirect to the results page. However, I'd like to do something a little more flashy. Maybe something along the lines of a progress bar, and even prompt the user with what's going on in the background. For example, give them a progress bar, with some text that says "Now processing suggestion 3 of 15; Multi-Vitamin" Any suggestions on how I could set this up? One way I'm thinking of doing it is to write the progress of the calculation method to the HttpContext, and slap up an update panel and timer that would show/refresh this info. I've also checked out maybe building a web service/method, and then poll that at some interval. Has anybody done something similar to this before? What worked for you? Thanks again! ~Jim

• Hover-to-click on jQuery UI datePicker 'next month' and 'prev month' not working

  Hi there, I have a calendar which is meant to look much like the calendar in Outlook. There is a big field representing the hours in a day, and there is a date navigator. The navigator is the jQuery UI Datepicker. I want users to be able to navigate to a new day by clicking on a date in the datepicker, but also to be able to drag appointments over the datepicker and drop them on a specific date. I have that working now. I also want users, while they are dragging an appointment, to be able to move to next or previous month simply by hovering over the datepicker. So I've added a mouseenter and mouseleave event: one runs a setInterval function which sends a click every 1,5 seconds; the other cancels the interval function. This is where all sorts of things go wrong. As soon as one click has been triggered, the mouseleave function no longer works: in other words, the datepicker keeps flipping over to another month every 1,5 seconds. It seems that the datePicker interferes, or that the click event causes other things to go wrong. What can I do?

• WordPress: Using a Where Clause With A Custom Field

  I have a bunch of events that are listed on a particular page. Each event is a post. I need them to display in the order in which they occur, NOT the order of the posting date. So, I've created a custom field called TheDate and enter in the date in this format for each one: 20110306. Then, I wrote my query like this: query_posts( array ( 'cat' => '4', 'posts_per_page' => -1, 'orderby' => 'meta_value_num', 'meta_key' => 'TheDate', 'order' => 'ASC' ) ); Works perfectly and displays the events in the correct order. However, I also want it to ONLY display dates from today onward. I don't want it to display dates which have passed. It seems the way to do this is with a "filter." I tried this, but it doesn't work. $todaysdate = date('Ymd'); query_posts( array ( 'cat' => '4', 'posts_per_page' => -1, 'orderby' => 'meta_value_num', 'meta_key' => 'TheDate', 'order' => 'ASC' ) ); function filter_where( $where = '' ) { $where .= "meta_value_num >= $todaysdate"; return $where; } add_filter( 'posts_where', 'filter_where' ); I figure it's just a matter of where I'm using this filter, I probably have it in the wrong place. • How can I assign a name to a task in TPL

  I'm going to use lots of tasks running on my application. Each bunch of tasks is running for some reason. I would like to name these tasks so when I watch the Parallel Tasks window, I could recognize them easily. With another point of view, consider I'm using tasks at the framework level to populate a list. A developer that use my framework is also using tasks for her job. If she looks at the Parallel Tasks Window she will find some tasks having no idea about. I want to name tasks so she can distinguish the framework tasks from her tasks. It would be very convenient if there was such API: var task = new Task(action, "Growth calculation task") or maybe: var task = Task.Factory.StartNew(action, "Populating the datagrid") or even while working with Parallel.ForEach Parallel.ForEach(list, action, "Salary Calculation Task" Is it possible to name a task? Is it possible to give ???Parallel.ForEach a naming structure (maybe using a lambda) so it creates tasks with that naming? Is there such API somewhere that I'm missing? I've also tried to use an inherited task to override it's ToString().   I'm trying to piece together a php script to output different text depending on what day it is and the time of day. Example: On weekdays (mon-fri), I would like to output text according to the following periods of time (24H, server time, UTC): 00:00-08:00: "Lorem ipsum" 08:00-13:00: "dolor sit amet" 13:00-15:00: "Pellentesque habitant" 15:00-15:30: "dolor sit amet" 15:30-24:00: "Lorem ipsum" On weekends (sat-sun), I would like to output the following text in this time period: 00:00-24:00 "Lorem ipsum" Can anyone help with a php script to do that? I've already gotten some help over at the css-tricks forum. Now I want to group this data into hourly readings. Can someone please assist me, I'm not sure what is right way of doing this. Thanks ADDED Ok so the spilt between Datetime is working nicely, but as if I add a SUM([KW]) function SQL gives an error. And if I include any of the group functions it also nags. Below is what works, I still need to sum the KW per the grouping of hours. I've tried using Group By Hour and Group by DATEPART(Hour,[DateTime]) Both didn't work.
