I'm going to organize a mini-course for CS students who have completed CS1 (Python) and CS2 (Java). I'd like to show them more principled approach to programming practice and design, something along the lines of McConnel's Code Complete. If I had enough copies of Code Complete, I would assign some readings from that book. Can you recommend some freely available material (books, blog posts, articles, essays) for such a course? Should I use scaffolding or not in Ruby on Rails?

I'm learning Ruby on Rails for a new project of mine. I am referring the book 'Agile Web Development with Rails' which shows how to build a shopping cart and they use scaffolding. I'm pretty familiar with MVC architecture and have used several frameworks in PHP to build applications. I've never used scaffolding and I'm not sure if that's the best way to start building an application. Has any formal research been done into architecture defects, and their impact on project speed, defects, and the like? Breathing for game/movie characters

Breathing (the movement of chest and face features): I'd like to ask if it is hard to model and whether it is computationaly expensive. I recently noticed the great effect it has in Madagascar 3 movie, but (please, correct me if I am wrong) don't remember seeing it in any games (except maybe steam cloud in cold/winter setting) and very few animated movies does that to noticable degree (e.g. when it is necessary by the plot or situation). I'd greatly appreciate answers from both movie graphics and game graphics perspective.Read the article

How to view files backed up to Ubuntu One by Déjà Dup?

I decided to try out the Ubuntu Backup system application on my 11.10 partition. Currently I am just using the default settings to back up folders in my Home (~) folder to the deja-dup in my Ubuntu One cloud. I have not been able to figure out how to view which files have been saved to the backup location other than by restoring them to a temp folder and then seeing what was restored. I'm hoping there is a less kludgy way to just find out what has or has not been backed up.Read the article

I've taken it upon myself to learn a couple of new programming languages and frameworks and aside from sheer practice I usually start by learning from an O'Reilly book or other technical "bibles". While most have been very helpful I'd like to know the steps or methods others use to best comprehend what's taught. In dependency injection, is there a simple name for the counterpart of the injected object?

In tutorials and books, I have never seen a single word describing the object that the injected object is injected into. Instead, other terms are used, like "injection point" which don't denote the object containing the injected object. And nothing I can think of sounds right, except maybe "injection target" - but I have never read it anywhere. Is there a single word or a simple expression for it, or is it like the "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" from a recent fantasy book series?Read the article

He states that <SolidColorBrush>White</SolidColorBrush> is equivalent to <SolidColorBrush Color="White"/> , because a string can be converted into a SolidColorBrush object. But how is that enough?
