• If a command line program is unsure of stdout's encoding, what encoding should it output?

  I have a command line program written in Python, and when I pipe it through another program on the command line, sys.stdout.encoding is None. This makes sense, I suppose -- the output could be another program, or a file you're redirecting it into, or whatever, and it doesn't know what encoding is desired. But neither do I! This program will be used by many different people (humor me) in different ways. Should I play it safe and output only ascii (replacing non-ascii chars with question marks)? Or should I output UTF-8, since it's so widespread these days?

• Recommended ways to install USB drivers with a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project?

  I need to install a USB driver with an application, and I'm using a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project to create the installer. The driver only needs to be installed sufficient enough so that when the USB device is plugged in, Windows will go off doing it's "installing device" routine and do the rest of the job. It would be okay also to have the setup finish and then the user connects the device when required with the driver install completing then. However the user shouldn't be prompted to find a driver location. The USB drivers I have are available either as plain .sys / .inf files, or as a full installer (.msi together with a setup.exe wrapper). The full installer deals with combinations of operating systems and languages, but the application is for internal use and I can limit the target OS to Windows XP. Would it be better just to run the available installer via a custom action, or to install via the .inf file somehow (I'm not sure how to do that)?

• Looking for python lib to manage remote tasks

  Hi, I have server with django on it, this server runs some manage.py commands and update database. Now I need to move some of this tasks to different servers. I don't want to allow remote db access and need some tool\lib to be able to start task on remote servers by main server's command and update tasks code/add new tasks. I have ssh access to every server, all servers run under debian and all code in python. I was thiking about creating my own xmpp based solution(server sends messages to slave servers with commands to execute, like "update task", "run task"), or maybe some low-level ssh based solution where main server logs to slave servers and executes bash commands. But I would be happy to hear any advices.

  Why does this work: #include <sys/types.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <stddef.h> typedef struct x { int a; int b[128]; } x_t; int function(int i) { size_t a; a = offsetof(x_t, b[i]); return a; } int main(int argc, char **argv) { printf("%d\n", function(atoi(argv[1]))); } If I remember the definition of offsetof correctly, it's a compile time construct. Using 'i' as the array index results in a non-constant expression. I don't understand how the compiler can evaluate the expression at compile time. Why isn't this flagged as an error?

• Make network changes permanent - C++

  I need to allow an external client to change the IP of the Linux machine where the program is running (C++). I already know how to list all the local interfaces and the current IPs assigned to them. I also know how to programatically change said IPs. What I need to know is how to make this change permanent so, if the machine reboots, it keeps the same network configuration. What's the best way to do this? Manually parsing /etc/network/interfaces? Calling some linux command? Edit: I'm using Debian. Thanks!

• Why do apache2 upgrades remove and not re-install libapache2-mod-php5?

  We repeatedly see that when an apache2 update arrives and is installed it causes the libapache2-mod-php5 package to be removed and does not subsequently re-install it automatically. We must subsequently re-install the libapache2-mod-php5 manually in order to restore functionality to our web server. Please see the following github gist, it is a contiguous section of our server's dpkg.log showing the November 14, 2011 update to apache2: https://gist.github.com/1368361 it includes 2011-11-14 11:22:18 remove libapache2-mod-php5 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 Is this a known issue? Do other people see this too? I could not find any launchpad bug reports about it. • SQL SERVER – FT_IFTS_SCHEDULER_IDLE_WAIT – Full Text – Wait Type – Day 13 of 28

  In the last few days during this series, I got many question about this Wait type. It would be great if you read my original related wait stats query in the first post because I have filtered it out in WHERE clause. However, I still get questions about this being one of the most wait types they encounter. The truth is, this is a background task processing and it really does not matter and it should be filtered out. There are many new Wait types related to Full Text Search that are introduced in SQL Server 2008. If you run the following query, you will be able to find them in the list. Currently there is not enough information for all of them available on BOL or any other place. But don’t worry; I will write an in-depth article when I learn more about them. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_os_wait_stats WHERE wait_type LIKE 'FT_%' The result set will contain following rows. FT_RESTART_CRAWL FT_METADATA_MUTEX FT_IFTSHC_MUTEX FT_IFTSISM_MUTEX FT_IFTS_RWLOCK FT_COMPROWSET_RWLOCK FT_MASTER_MERGE FT_IFTS_SCHEDULER_IDLE_WAIT We have understood so far that there is not much information available. But the problem is when you have this Wait type, what should you do?  The answer is to filter them out for the moment (i.e, do not pay attention on them) and focus on other pressing issues in wait stats or performance tuning. Here are two of my informal suggestions, which are totally independent from wait stats: Turn off the Full Text Search service in your system if you are  not necessarily using it on your server. Learn proper Full Text Search methodology. You can get Michael Coles’ book: Pro Full-Text Search in SQL Server 2008. Now I invite you to speak out your suggestions or any input regarding Full Text-related best practices and wait stats issue. Please leave a comment. • Unable to ssh out anywhere - ssh_exchange_identification

  I have a setup where I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 as a VirtualBox guest under a Windows 7 host, behind a restrictive corporate firewall. I have set up NAT from the host port 22 to Ubuntu's port 22; IT inform me that they have opened port 22 outbound for the host machine's IP address. I have run ssh-keygen -t rsa, and am trying to test the setup by connecting to github and another known ssh server. In both cases the connect is refused with ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host. Full -vvv log is below. Is this possibly still due to the corporate firewall? If so, what else might I need to request from them?
