  I just wondered how to create a 3D effect similar to Pokemon White/Black? It seems to be not polygon based, but created just with sprites. If the perspective changes the sprites stay sharp and don't get blurred. How can I archive this? • Disabling Bluetooth crashes 3G: can I consider this a bug?

  I'm on an Acer TravelMate 8372G here runnning Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and I get the following weird behaviour: As soon as I turn off bluetoooth, the built-in 3G connection disconnects and Network Manager is unable to reconnect, leaving the following track in syslog: NetworkManager[1205]: <warn> GSM modem enable failed: (32) Unknown error The only way I'm able to reconnect 3G is by going all the way through rfkill unblock bluetooth rfkill block wwan rfkill unblock wwan sudo service network-manager restart My question to you guys: should I file a bug, or is there any any logical connection I'm missing that makes this a feature? = thanks! workflow

• Which Compiz plugins can I safely disable?

  On 11.10, which Compiz plugins are enabled by default? I.e. I should leave them enabled for some particular reason. I've imported my Compiz settings from my previous install and so I can't tell. I'd like to disable all unnecessary plugins because I've noticed the potential for interference or performance issues. I don't think I can trust the CCSM feature "Reset to defaults" because when I use it I need to run unity --reset afterwards in order for my desktop to work again (implying that the default values it resets to are not the values that Ubuntu/Unity requires).

It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. • Better control on code updates

  I will briefly explain my situation. I have a website in PHP, this website is powered by a custom framework + some "plug-in" made ad hoc for it. I am the only developer of this. Until now I just test locally any changes than I upload the php files via FTP. I don't feel confortable anymore with this. The code base has grown quite a lot and I need some sort of system that helps to keep track of changes (line by line) and can restore to an old version easly if something goes wrong. Are there any good solution for this?   In SQL Server 2005 and earlier, it is not possible to pass a table variable as a parameter to a stored procedure. When multiple rows of data to SQL Server need to send multiple rows of data to SQL Server, developers either had to send one row at a time or come up with other workarounds to meet requirements. While a VB.Net developer recently informed me that there is a SQLBulkCopy object available in .Net to send multiple rows of data to SQL Server at once, the data still can not be passed to a stored proc.Possibly the most anticipated T-SQL feature of SQL Server 2008 is the new Table-Valued Parameters. This is the ability to easily pass a table to a stored procedure from T-SQL code or from an application as a parameter.

  A recent question on stackoverflow provoked a discussion about the immutability of primary keys. I had thought that it was a kind of rule that primary keys should be immutable. If there is a chance that some day a primary key would be updated, I thought you should use a surrogate key. However it is not in the SQL standard and some RDBMS' "cascade update" feature allows a primary key to change. So my question is: is it still a bad practice to have a primary key that may change ? What are the cons, if any, of having a mutable primary key ?

• How do I access and enable more icons to be in the system tray?

  So I'm messing around with Natty a little, and I noticed that all the apps that would normally use the system tray (or "notification area"?) aren't displaying there. Is that a bug, or is that the way it's going to be? I heard something about Ubuntu getting rid of that feature entirely. Is there a way to add it back? I mean, I didn't really like it, either, especially when there were apps that used it unnecessarily, but I can't use CryptKeeper at all now, or easycrypt, and I don't know whether Dropbox has synced without opening Nautilus.

• Need to adjust touchpad edge scroll area

  I have an Acer Aspire that I have dual booting XP and Ubuntu. On the Windows side, the driver allows you to set how close your finger has to be to the edge of the touchpad before it goes into scroll mode. In Ubuntu I don't have the option (at least in the GUI) to change the scroll area on the pad. Is there a conf file or other way to change this? I'm constantly getting into the scroll area during normal usage. I would like to leave it on without losing so much pad area to the scroll feature. Thanks a lot.

• Unity greeter background not changing for users automatically after upgrade

  I have recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04. Normal upgrade, no new installation. In 11.10 I was using Simple LightDM Manager tool to set a custom wallpaper on the login screen. This tool unfortunately doesn't seem to do anything since I have upgraded. I have also heard that 12.04 is suppose to have this feature (changing login wallpaper per different user) by default. I have searched in settings but unfortunately in vain. So, to keep it short, could somebody direct me to the option(s) page where I can make the desired changes.

• Useful git commit messages for merged branches

  As a follow-up to this question: If I'm working on a team by myself, I can maintain useful commit messages when merging branches by squashing all the commits to a single diff and then merging that diff. That way I can easily see what changes were introduced in the branch, and I have a single summary describing the feature/change/whatever that was accomplished in that branch when browsing the master branch. My question now is, how can I accomplish this when working with a team? In that situation, the branches will be pushed to a remote repository, meaning that I can't squash all the commits in the branch down to a single commit. If the branch is public, can I still have a single useful merge commit in the master branch? (By "useful" I mean that the commit in the master line tells me (1) a useful summary of what was done in the branch and (2) diffs of the same.)

• C++: Checking if an object faces a point (within a certain range)

  I have been working on a shooter game in C++, and am trying to add a feature whereby missiles shot must be within 90 degrees (PI/2 radians) of the direction the ship is facing. The missiles will be shot towards the mouse. My idea is that the ship's angle of rotation is compared with the angle between the ship and the mouse (std::atan2(mouseY - shipY, mouseX - shipX)), and if the difference is less than PI/4 (45 degrees) then the missile can be fired. However, I can't seem to get this to work. The ship's angle of rotation is increased and decreased with the A and D keys, so it is possible that it isn't between 0 and 2*PI, hence the use of fmod() below. Code: float userRotation = std::fmod(user->Angle(), 6.28318f); if (std::abs(userRotation - missileAngle) > 0.78f) return; Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
