• A little tidbit on Team Build 2010 and error MSB3147

  The problem? Performing a build on a ClickOnce solution would not be successful due to the setup.bin not being located. Ok, now what? Researched from corner to corner, install, re-install, update.  Found some interesting posts to fix the issue, but most of them were focused on Team Foundation Server/Team Build 2008, and some other on 2005.  The other interesting tidbit was the frequent indication to modify the registry to help Team Build find the bootstrapper. Background info:  This was a migration I posted about a few days ago, a 32 bit TFS implementation to a full 64 bit TFS implementation.  Now, the project has binaries and dependencies on X86 (This piece of information became essential to moving from a failed build to a successful build). So, what’s the fix? The trick in this case was to go back into the Build Type and check the properties/configuration.  Upon further investigation, I found the following:  Once you Edit the Build Definition, then select Process, expand 3. Advanced and look for MSBuild Platform, switch from Auto to X86.  Ran the Build, and success!

• Java JRE 1.7.0_60 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

  Java Runtime Environment 7u60 (a.k.a. JRE 7u60-b19) and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline are now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.0, 12.1, and 12.2 for Windows-based desktop clients. Effects of new support dates on Java upgrades for EBS environments Support dates for the E-Business Suite and Java have changed.  Please review the sections below for more details: What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers? All JRE 6 and 7 releases are certified with EBS upon release Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline, and from JRE 7u10 and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 and JRE 7 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 and 7 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 or JRE 7 releases to your EBS users' desktops. No need to worry -- it's fixed.  To recap: JRE releases 1.6.0_18 through 1.6.0_22 had issues with mismanaging session cookies that affected some users in some circumstances. The fix for those issues was first included in JRE 1.6.0_23. These fixes will carry forward and continue to be fixed in all future JRE releases on the JRE 6 and 7 codelines.  In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22 on the JRE 6 codeline, and JRE 7u10 and later JRE 7 codeline updates. Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users The Support Roadmap for Oracle Java is published here: Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap The latest updates to that page (as of Sept. 19, 2012) state (emphasis added): Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support . What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates from February 2013 to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017. In other words, nothing changes for EBS users after February 2013.  EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 until the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017. How can EBS customers obtain Java 6 updates after the public end-of-life? EBS customers can download Java 6 patches from My Oracle Support.  For a complete list of all Java SE patch numbers, see: All Java SE Downloads on MOS (Note 1439822.1) Both JDK and JRE packages are contained in a single combined download after 6u45.  Download the "JDK" package for both the desktop client JRE and the server-side JDK package.  Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? This upgrade is highly recommended but remains optional while Java 6 is covered by Extended Support. Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.  Java 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All E-Business Suite customers must upgrade to JRE 7 by June 2017. Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290807.1 and 393931.1. Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed. Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed.  JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release. • Developing an internet-enabled application as a Kiosk on Windows 7

  I am finalizing development of a desktop Java application that communicates with an outside web server, and now I need to start seriously considering deployment. This application will run on a large touchscreen all-in-one workstation running Windows 7. It will be located in a public-area and thus must be LOCKED-DOWN Hanibal Lecter style. Early in the project nobody really concerned themselves with this fact just assuming that we can buy some magical software for Windows 7 that will automatically take care of all this, however I am finding now that this looks to be a LOT more complicated than my manager ever thought. I need to: - Lock down the standard hot-keys (ALT+TAB, ALT+CTRL+DEL, etc...) Prevent the user from opening ANY programs other than the kiosk application and its spawned executables Prevent the user from closing the application Start the kiosk application on startup (this can be done without kiosk software) Auto-login to Windows on reboot (Windows Updates, power failure, bratty kid pressing the power button, etc...) Administrator passcode escape sequence for routine maintenance by desktop support professionals. To my dismay I am having a really hard time finding software that contains the whole package and am finding numerous swaths of competing information on the best way to do this. I am not necessarily looking for free or open source software and am willing to pay for software that can help me achieve this. Have any of you ever wrote kiosk software before and if so what approaches have you taken to do this?

• How to facilitate code reviews in a small team for embedded software?

  Short Question Does a cost-effective tool / workflow exist to facilitate code reviews in a small team? More specifically, a small team that relies on post-commit code reviews. Background Our team currently consists of 3 full time and 1 part time software engineers, with plans on hiring more in the near future. Due to our team size and volume of projects we all must juggle, the pre-commit workflow that major tools (such as Review Board and Code Collaborator) use is not obtainable for us right now. The best we can do at the moment is to perform post-commit reviews before major releases or as time permits. Nearly all of our projects are hosted on RepositoryHosting.com (which I highly recommend) and contain a mixture of SVN and GIT repositories. Current Thoughts Since I cannot find a tool that fits our needs right now, I am turning to TRAC that is built into our repository's site. At the moment we use TRAC to file tickets and track milestones, so to me this seems like a natural fit for code review results as well. The direction I am heading in right now is to use a spread sheet(s) to log all of the bugs and comments. Do some macro magic to get it in a format that I can use TRAC's import ticket method and use TRAC's ticketing system to create the action items / bug reports automatically. The auto ticket generation is darn near a must have, adding in bugs and comments one at a time from a web-gui is really painful. Secondary Question If this workflow makes sense, is there a good / standard template to use as a code review log?

• Gnome 3 - Multiple Video Cards - Xinerama -- Forced Fallback Mode

  Just installed a 2nd nvidia video card -- previously had gnome 3 working perfectly with 2 monitors on a a single video card using twinview tried a number of things thus far twinview on 1 card + xinerama no xinerama no twinview various manual xorg.conf hacks based on random forums (couple references below) xinerama no twinview with and without Extensions Composite The last one is what I'm using now -- it results in a forced fallback mode with Composite Disable set at the end of xorg.conf via nvidia-settings Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Disable" EndSection when I disabled that last snippet it boots to gnome 3 full with the left monitor on a black screen and the middle monitor as primary but non-responsive switching to console mode Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then switching back I get 3 black screens with a mouse that can move around but nothing to interact with issue seems related to OpenGL and the multiple video cards -- I can boot into Unity without issue though my Glx-Dock shows up with the black background as barely shows in the screenshot below indicating the OpenGL is not initiated has anyone had any luck with getting Xinerama to work with Multiple NVidia Video Cards with OpenGL support? Found this in the logs while looking a bit further [ 23.208] (II) NVIDIA(1): Setting mode "nvidia-auto-select+0+0" [ 23.254] (WW) NVIDIA(1): The GPU driving screen 1 is incompatible with the rest of the [ 23.254] (WW) NVIDIA(1): GPUs composing the desktop. OpenGL rendering will be [ 23.254] (WW) NVIDIA(1): disabled on screen 1. [ 23.277] (==) NVIDIA(1): Disabling shared memory pixmaps [ 23.277] (==) NVIDIA(1): Backing store disabled [ 23.277] (==) NVIDIA(1): Silken mouse enabled [ 23.277] (==) NVIDIA(1): DPMS enabled According to this page at the NVidia User Docs http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.09/README/chapter-14.html I may be out of luck =( Starting this question with the hopes that others may be able to help debug and perhaps gain answers over time as I really want to get the full gnome 3 back.

• How do I get a Broadcom BCM4311 working?

  I'm having serious problems installing the broadcom drivers for ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless not working Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. Now, the only options i see are: Wired Network Auto Eth0 Disconnect VPN Enable networking Connection information Edit connection. hope above info is enough for your help.

• Powershell: Install-dotNET4 function

  This function will download and install ,NET 4.0. It uses the Get-Framework-Versions function to determine if the installation is necessary or not. Internet Connectivity will be required as the script auto downloads the setup file (and sleeps for 360 seconds... I had a function in there to monitor for install completion at first, turns out the setup file spawns so many childprocesses the function just got confused and locked up -_-)Alternatively you could drop the installation file in the folder specified on the $folderPath variable too. That will skip the download and use the file. This function easily adapts in to other versions f.e. • Are very short or abbreviated method/function names that don't use full words bad practice or a matter of style.

  Is there nowadays any case for brevity over clarity with method names? Tonight I came across the Python method repr() which seems like a bad name for a method to me. It's not an English word. It apparently is an abbreviation of 'representation' and even if you can deduce that, it still doesn't tell you what the method does. A good method name is subjective to a certain degree, but I had assumed that modern best practices agreed that names should be at least full words and descriptive enough to reveal enough about the method that you would easily find one when looking for it. Method names made from words help let your code read like English. repr() seems to have no advantages as a name other than being short and IDE auto-complete makes this a non-issue. An additional reason given in an answer is that python names are brief so that you can do many things on one line. Surely the better way is to just extract the many things to their own function, and repeat until lines are not too long. Are these just a hangover from the unix way of doing things? Commands with names like ls, rm, ps and du (if you could call those names) were hard to find and hard to remember. I know that the everyday usage of commands such as these is different than methods in code so the matter of whether those are bad names is a different matter.

• What is the best way to design a table with an arbitrary id?

  I have the need to create a table with a unique id as the PK. The ID is a surrogate key. Originally, I had a natural key, but requirement changes have undermined this idea. Then, I considered adding an auto incrementing identity. But, this presents problems. A. I can't specify my own ID. B. The ID's are difficult to reset. Both of these together make it difficult to copy over this table with new data or move the table across domains, e.g. Dev to QA. I need to refer to these ID's from the front end, JavaScript...so they must not change. So, the only way I am aware of to meet all these challenges is to make a GUID ID. This way, I can overwrite the ID's when I need to or I can generate a new one without concern for order (E.G. an int based id would require I know the last inserted ID). Is a GUID the best way to accomplish my goals? Considering that a GUID is a string and joining on a string is an expensive task, is there a better way?

• Launching Ops Center 12c

  Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c is most ambitious version of the Ops Center tooling that we've ever released. I think that make it appropriate that we launched it in grand style! When it became clear we were going to be complete with the 12c final release about this time of year, the marketing team proposed that we roll the launch of 12c into Oracle OpenWorld Tokyo.  I thought that sounded like a fine idea!  You see, I have always loved Japan.  I even studied a bit of Japanese language back in school. OpenWorld Tokyo was an outstanding even this year.  It was held in Roppongi, one of the most stylish districts in Tokyo. And, to make things even better, the Sakura (cherry blossoms) were blooming.  If you've never been in Japan for cherry blossom season, it's a must see!  Here are a couple of pics for you. Here is a picture from Roppongi, near the conference.  Here's a picture near the Imperial Palace.  A couple of friends from the local sales team took me here before my flight out. So, now back to the product launch! We choose to launch the product in John Fowler's "Engineered Systems" keynote address.  It made perfect sense because of the close ties of Ops Center to the Systems portfolio of products.  It was a packed house for the keynote.  Here's a picture I took just before we started -- there were also hundreds more people in "overflow" rooms in other parts of the venue. Here's a picture of me on stage during the launch. While there are countless new features in Ops Center 12c that customers will love, I had to limit myself to discussing just three. Mission Critical Clouds Solaris 11 Engineered Systems So, what does Mission Critical Cloud mean?  It means we've expanded EM's cloud capabilities in a couple of key areas. First, we've expanded the "self service provisioning" capabilities we have to include SPARC -- not just x86.  Now you can build clouds of Solaris Zones with ease!  Second, we've much more deeply integrated high-end storage and network management into the cloud layers.  These may our IaaS story is now much more powerful! For Solaris 11, we didn't simply port our monitoring agent to S11.  That would have been easy, but also boring! We support S11 deeply.  Full access to the power of the IPS packaging system, the new virtualized networking stack, new Zones features, the Auto Install framework.  If you're ready to try Solaris 11 then Ops Center is ready for you. Last is on the area of Engineered Systems.  These combinations of hardware and software are fast and powerful. However, we're also on a mission to make them ever easier to manage.  We've made major strides with Ops Center 12c. Manage these systems as racks, not individual components.  The new capabilities for the new engineered systems like Exalogic and SPARC SuperCluster and striking. • A question about the cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script

  I have been testing the latest cobbler for PXE booting Ubuntu 12.04.1-server-x86_64 and 12.10-server-x86_64 using a Scentific Linux 6.3 host to run the cobbler server. With the former, I got everything going. But with the later, I haven't been successful. As an attempt to figure things out, I downloaded Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 source package. Examining the content, I soon noticed that Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 came with a cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script. I reviewed the code and spotted something interesting: line 9 of the script states: 9 AUTO_KOPTS='log_host=@@server@@ log_port=514 priority=critical locale=en_US netcfg/choose_interface=auto' But after extensive googling, reading both Debian and Ubuntu's documentation about the debian-installer, I don't see these two kopts log_host and log_port documented anywhere. Putting it in the profile of my current test setup, even my cobbler server host does run rsyslogd, I don't see anything logged either. No, I don't have iptables and selinux on on the cobbler server host. Can anyone point to me where I can read more about these two options? Having the ability to log an installation to a remote central logging host would be really cool.

• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011.   I have connected an external monitor to my laptop through HDMI. Currently either my Desktop is getting extended to the external monitor (with native resolution) or low resolution on both when I choose "Same Image in both". How can I ensure that the external monitor is used by default and the laptop monitor just blanks.   Introducing Extensibility Exchange Version 2 On the heals of Enterprise Manager 12c Release 4 this week comes version 2.0 of the Extensibility Exchange.  A new theme allows optimal viewing on a number of different computing devices from large monitor displays to tablets to smartphones.   One of the first things you'll notice is a scrollable banner with the latest news related to Enterprise Manager and extensibility.  Along with the "slider" and the latest entries from Oracle and the Partner community, new features like a tag cloud and an auto-complete search box provide a better way to find the plug-in, connector or other Enterprise Manager entity you are looking for.  Once you find it, a content details page with specific info related to that particular entity will enable you to access it at the provider's site and also rate and comment on that particular item. • Can't enable wireless lan on Fujitsu Siemens A1665G with Ubuntu 11.10 installed

  I saw my old Notebook yesterday and wanted to make that work again. On Windows XP the wireless worked still fine. Then I installed new Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and I'm sadly not able to make the wireless enabled. [I replaced Win XP entirely] lspci lists following network: 08:0a.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) So after recommendation from this link I installed the b43 firmware module. iwconfig prints the following: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associatd Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management: off As you can see, my wireless lan adapter is not turned on. sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto Doesn't change anything. Then I tried to make it work with rfkill. rfkill list 0: phy0: Wirless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes sudo rfkill unblock all rfkill list 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes remains the same. The question is now, how I could enable the hard blocked wireless LAN. There is no hardware switch for wlan integrated. However there is a button to change the state. I always thought this would be software sided, but it seems to make some hardware changes as well... The wireless LED is also not blinking (as it did on windows xp) I reset bios and searched for some settings in there, but it has only a few options and nothing to do with wireless settings, nothing works here.. At last I tried to install the acer hotkeys but I was not able to manage that. I installed the acerhkgui package, but in initializing progress, it was not able to compile acer hotkeys for my machine. There was a message that asm/linkage.h was not found while compiling. Do you have any ideas what I could do to make this hard blocked stuff disabled and my wireless card work? PS: I also tried sudo rm /dev/rfkill and a reboot to reinit that stuff... No success :(
