• What IRC client do you use on Windows?

  I used to use XChat, until i realised it was only free on Linux. It was my favourite IRC client I've used and it's my preferred choice on Linux now. I moved to mIRC but it's not perfect imo. I should try to get to use irssi more but I have a thing for GUIs. Terminal-style apps are ok but not something I'd like to spend ages looking at, especially on Windows. What GUI-based client do you use on Windows and why?

• icacls, Network Service, and setting ACLs on Windows Server 2008

  Setting ACLs on Windows Server 2008 via the command line is giving me some problems. As per http://web2.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC%5FID=26907 I've tried all sorts of variations: C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant 'NT A uthority\NETWORK SERVICE: (OI) (CI)M' C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant "NETWORK SERVICE": (OI) (CI)M And all variations in between. However, each try leads to i.e. "Invalid parameter "'NETWORK'"" depending on the variation above. As per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753525%28WS.10%29.aspx (see in comments), it appears that others have experienced the same issue where the same command works on Windows 7/Vista/etc., but not on Windows Server 2008. What's the best way to apply permissions to Network Service account on a directory and/or files via the command line in Windows Server 2008? Especially as there's no way to do multiple file permissions at once via the GUI (see http://serverfault.com/questions/30991/windows-server-2008-change-security-settings-for-multiple-files-at-once).

• VPN is working, except for DNS lookups. Firewall (Cisco ASA 5505) issue?

  I've got the following set up: LAN -> DHCP / DNS / VPN server (OSX 10.6) -> Cisco ASA 5505 -> WAN Connecting to the LAN via VPN works fine. I get all the details properly and I can ping any host on the internal network using their IP. However, I can't do any host lookups whatsoever. I've looked through the logs on and found this nugget in the firewall log: 3 Sep 08 2010 10:46:40 305006 10.0.0.197 65371 portmap translation creation failed for udp src inside:myhostname.local/53 dst inside:10.0.0.197/65371 Port 53 is dns services, no? Because of that log entry, I'm thinking that the issue is with the firewall, not the server. Any ideas? Please keep in mind that I have very little knowledge and experience with this kind of firewall and the little experience I do have is with the ASDM GUI console, not the CLI console.

• Unable to set NTFS permissions for ApplicationPoolIdentity on Windows 2008 SP2

  On Windows 2008 R2 I am able to set NTFS permissions for an application pool's synthesised ApplicationPoolIdentity account thus: ICACLS d:\websites\site1\www /grant "IIS AppPool\site1":(CI)(OI)(M) The website's application pool is named site1 and is configured to run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. The site's authentication is also configured to authenticate as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I've done this a thousand times on Windows 2008 Standard Edition R2 with never a hitch. However if I try to do the same in Windows 2008 Standard Edition SP2 I get the error: IIS AppPool\site1: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files I also notice that this fails if I try to set permissions for the application pool identity via the security GUI as well. I've seen this before and a reboot has cleared this issue but I'd like to know why this happens periodically. Googling around suggests other folks have hit this problem but there's never a satisfactory explanation. Why would this be?

  I'm googling for a while about how can I install Gentoo on Virtual Box. The hand book provides less information about installing it on virtual box rather on a real partition. I thought there will be a GUI tool to install Gentoo. [Now I think there is not :(] Whenever I'm booting into gentoo Im going into a LiveDVD environment where fdisk returning "command not found !" (Not sure this is a bug or Im using a wronng command) Now Im not a very exprienced user but do like to learn and play with Gentoo. Any help link will be appriciated. Downloaded File: livedvd-x86-amd64-32ul-2012.iso (Do I need to use Gentoo 64 as OS version in Virtual Box ?)

• Windows 7 - Home Drive Map Fails

  Server 2003 SP2 (not R2) with 2 new Win 7 Pro workstations. Home Drive is set in AD (not GP) to map to \\server\users\username. Home Drive map fails, other network drives map correctly. No error logged on server or PC, Win 7 shows "Could not reconnect all network drives." There is no Y: (Home Drive) listed, either in the GUI or via Net Use. Manual map via batch file in startup group with the same path works correctly? Home Drive map works correctly on XP workstations.

  I would like to start multiple GUI applications with a single script or command in Ubuntu 12. By now, I have a shell script that starts an application in the foreground and waits for the termination of the application afterwards starts several applications (like browser, mailer, IRC client) in the background The script is working, however all the applications are getting the same icon and are treated like different windows of one application, i.e. the script. Is there a way to start applications from a script, that makes Unity display the icons of the applications, e.g. the Thunderbird icon, instead of a single default icon for the script? • Is it possible to code on two different computers simultaneously?

  I want to work with another programmer and I want the source code to be live in real-time on both of our screens. Is this possible on the Mac OS x or Linux? We're going to be using OS X but occasionally we might need to add an Ubuntu computer too. Is there a way I can do this using ssh, any shell based program, or even a good GUI? I thought Coda might be capable of this but it's not really working. Anyone ever do this? I'm not look for a git/svn/or any other version control system. This is more of a live coding session. :)

• Resizing partition in VMware Fusion didn't work

  I migrated a Parallels VM to VMware Fusion. That worked well, although the original partition size was way too small (8GB). Following some instructions from VMware, I used the Fusion GUI to extend the size of the disk to 20GB, and then I booted from a GPartEd LiveCD to grow the C: partition to the full 20GB. That seemed to work, and I can see that the disk is 20GB in Disk Manager, but it still thinks the actual partition is 8GB. Here is a screenshot of it. What can I do to get the entire 20GB usable?

  I have a linksys WRT54GL router with a DD-WRT installed and I want to setup some advanced filtering that seem to not be available through "Access restrictions" web gui option. I guess I would be using IPTABLES then. I have ssh access to router and can run iptables, but I'm not so experienced with iptables. So here are my needs: my policy would be deny all first and then allow exceptions allow all http (port 80) access to WAN through wireless allow all other traffic only to PCs with specific MAC addresses allow internet access to PC with specific MAC address according to schedule (let's say everyday between 18:00-21:00) is this possible to setup with IPtables? could somebody help me a bit with it? or should go and RTFM?

• Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Why does my Mac address reset after reconnecting?

  I have ubuntu 12. I'm changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx which works. However when I restart my connection my computer resets my mac to my original mac address. I'm guessing that this happens because something calls... ifconfig wlan0 down ... do something before connecting ifconfig wlan0 up ... connect to designated access point I want my mac address to however be the same no matter how many times I disconnect and reconnect, whether to another network or the same one. Also it would be nice to turn off the auto-connect feature for my network-manager with out having to edit each individual connection. Lastly I would like to know how to connect to a wifi network through the terminal and not via gui network manager ubuntu provides.

  using ASP.NET 3.5 WebForm using C# 3.0, is it possible to setup a RS 232 communication with a device? I need the WebForm to be able to read and write data to the serial port. I understand that under Components, there is a SerialPort .NET Component, but it seems to me that it can only be used in a Windows application (WinForm). • How to manage several Linux workstation like a cluster?

  How does one go about managing a lab of Linux workstations? I'd like for users to be able to log in, run their GUI apps (LibreOffice, Firefox, Eclipse, etc), and for the computers to be able to be used as compute nodes (OpenMPI). This part I'm fine with. But how can I centrally deploy a new software package or upgrade an installed package? How can I reload the entire OS on a given node, as if these workstations were part of a super computing cluster? Is there a nice program to help with setting up PXE booting and image management, and remotely managing packages? Ideally such a system would work with Ubuntu. If there isn't a nice package, how could this be set up manually?

• Install Navicat for MySQL on Linux Ubuntu 12.04

  How do I install Navicat on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04? I have just configured a new Ubuntu 12.04. Because I'm not so familiar with the command line, I prefer to use Ubuntu Desktop so that I can have a GUI. Now I need to install a front-end to connect with MySQL. I prefer to use Navicat in a MAC environment, so I was hoping to install Navicat on the Ubuntu machine. I downloaded a Linux copy of Navicat for MySQL from here: http://www.navicat.com/download/navicat-for-mysql The problem I am having is that I don't know how to install the program after it has been downloaded. There is a navicat.exe file in the navicat folder, but that seems to be for a DOS/Windows environment. I just can't figure out how to install Navicat onto Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. Anyone have any ideas? • How do I catalog files on several external hard drives that I want to store off-line? OSX

  My partner, an artist, has more than 10 external hardisks both USB and firewire and every 2-3 months a new one has to be added (She's working with videos and pictures) currently its 10TB and growing so too much for a affordable NAS. Right now the files are not indexed and I think can not be searched with spotlight because not all drives can be connected at the same time. So if she wants to search for a file, she has to guess which disk/disks (based mostly on the date) and then search several drives. Now I'm looking for a solution to index/catalog the drives, something like GentibusCD Cathy Disclib (all these solutions are unfortunately Windows only) Is there any software for OSX that will catalog all the hard drives, so she can search the catalog, find the files, and get the ID of the disk / disk name that has the content? Preferably something with a GUI so my partner can also use it easily Preferably with Thumbnails for pictures/videos (But even an equivalent to "tree /F /A" would be better than nothing)

  Is there such as thing as a text-mode FTP client for Windows 7 ? By 'text-mode' I mean one that runs in a CMD.EXE window as opposed to a Windows GUI application. It also needs to be something along the lines of FileZilla, i.e. menu-driven as opposed to command-entry clients like NcFTP or indeed the built-in one. edit: To avoid confusion, what I mean is an application similar to that pictured (ZTreeWin File Manager), which runs from CMD.EXE and uses text characters for its UI, within the CMD.EXE window. The built-in FTP client, and things like NcFTP offer a prompt at which you issue commands. That's not what I'm looking for.

• Is it possible to upgrade using the Windows Server 2012 evaluation?

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?

• Combining features from other projects in an ASP.NET MVC application

  Hello, I am writing an ASP.NET MVC application that combines a set of features from existing applications. The new application is suppose to use UI features and logic created (especially for this purpose) in the existing applications. For that reason I wanted to create in the existing applications some kind of a "blackbox" that I will be able to drop in my new application along with a matching connection string, and it will work independently, binding data on it's own. I thought about using partial views, but I am having trouble with passing the model data to it, since the controller of the new application should not know about the model of the existing applications. I can not use ASP.NET WebForms, since my application should be a "postback-less" application, and ASP.NET AJAX toolkit or frameworks alike are out of the question. • vmware workstation - virtual network adapters missing from ipconfig, still show in networking (XP host)

  Hi Folks - here's a new one for me, and my first time posting here: I installed VMWare workstation 7.1 on a new PC. VMWare properly installs the virtual network adapters under the Network Connections control panel, however for some reason they do not show up under ipconfig, which is very weird. They also don't appear anywhere in "route print". I don't have network connectivity to the VM. My guesses are perhaps some conflict with Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Firewall. Tried the following things: enabling TCP/IP in the virtual network adapters (they often get installed with it disabled for some reason) Restoring defualts in the VMnetcfg gui tool (this causes an uninstall and reinstall of the virtual network adapters on the host) Re-installing vmware workstation Uninstalling checkpoint secureremote and then reinstalling vmware Just to be clear, this problem is totally on the host. In my searching for stuff about (non-vmware) adapters missing from ipconfig, I see some posts about resetting the TCP/IP stack using netsh. Looking into that next... Thanks!

• Ubuntu/Linux version recommendation for HP dv6 3122TX?

  I purchased a HP dv6 3122TX recently and after installing Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I ran into multiple issues like, The wireless driver is not supported by Uubntu. (1) [The driver is RaLink RT3090 ] The ethernet stopped working sometimes for no reason [The driver is Realtek RTL8111/8168B ] "Corrupted low memory at ..." issue which is described as a kernel bug in Ubuntu support forums. (It started to take me to a terminal instead of the GUI and couldn't start x server after that) As I'm not an expert Ubuntu user I got fed up of all these issue and got back to Windows 7. But I need an Ubuntu installation up and running for my development work. What are your suggestions about a reasonable Ubuntu version that I should try? Or a different Linux variation? Should I stick to a 32-bit version? It'd be great anyone can give some advice on this issue.

  I bought Dell Vostro 3360 notebook with Windows 7 It has 128 GB SSD hard disk, it is already has 4 partitions: Dell partition, Recovery partition, OS partition, Hibernate partition. Here is screenshot (Russian language, but I made some marks): I want to split OS partition, because I need c:\ and d:\ . Reason is that I have a lot of difficulties with administration mode on c:. So I tried to split OS partition but I already have 4 partitions. Can I remove hibernate partition without consequences? I have Hibernate disabled in settings, but I have hiberfil.sys file on c:\ If I can remove it, how can I do this, I can't do this with standard GUI disk managment tool

  I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Express, working on a Silverlight 4 project in C#. • Aircrack-ng Usage on Windows (XP) -- Needs clear steps

  I've found that Aircrack-ng is very powerful tool for wireless hacking. But it is a bit complicated to use (even with its documentation). Also, when I run the GUI, it needs to add a "capture file". What is that? Additionally, it says Windows version is weaker than the Linux version. So how can I get it to run like a Linux version? What are some step-by-step instructions (to use on Windows XP)?
