• Duplicate forwarded messages in Blackberry when using BIS

  Our Setup External email arrives at a Postfix server, is scanned, and then forwarded via settings in transport (using the RELAY:[{ip-address}] for a given address) to an Exchange 2007 server. Some users are on Exchange, but a few are still on the Postfix server (they will be moved in the near future). IMAPS is provided for external connections via Dovecot; in-house, IMAP is provided for the Gateway and native MAPI is used for Exchange/Outlook. Blackberries are connected via BIS, which uses Dovecot as a reverse-proxy IMAPS service to connect to Exchange (when the mailbox exists on Exchange, otherwise it connects to the mailbox on the gateway). The Issue We have a user that, when they forward an email on their Outlook client, they get a duplicate of the original message on their Blackberry. When I say duplicate, I mean that they have a copy of the forwarded version of the message (i.e. their version of the message that they obtained hitting the forward button), and a copy of the original message that shows up at the same time. The expected behavior is to just see the forwarded message, not the forwarded message and a 2nd copy of the original message. We've only seen this with Outlook users that also have a Blackberry. Other IMAP clients, such as OS X Mail or Thunderbird, do not exhibit this behavior when connecting to the Exchange server; forwarded messages work as expected. The Questions what is causing this to happen? why does it only affect Outlook/Blackberry setups, and not TBird/Blackberry or OSX-Mail/Blackberry? how do we get it to stop, before people go insane and never forward messages again?

• Same script, different behavior [migrated]

  I just stumbled upon an interesting bug... Still trying to figure out what is exactly happening. Maybe you can help. First, the context. I'm currently building yet another man to html converter (for some reasons I won't motivate here, but I need it). So, have a look at the screenshot below (see the link), more precisely at the outlined spots. See? On the upper shell, I have &lt ; and &gt ;, that is, escaped html. While on the shell below I have < and directly. But as you can see (or do I seriously need looking glass ?), the command man 2 semget | webmanneris the same on both sides, as is the which webmanner. The two are executed roughly at the same moment, with no modification made to the script between. [Oops, cannot post pictures just yet... Here comes the link] http://aspyct.org/media/webmanner-bug.png But the shell below is older (open about 1 hour ago). Newer shells all print out &lt ;. So my first guess was that it somehow had a cached reference to the old inode of the file, or old blocks or whatever. So I modified parts of the script, at the start and then at the end, to print different messages. And, surprise, the message shown up on both terminals. But still, same difference between &lt ; and <. I'm confused... How to explain that behavior? I'm working on a OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) EDIT: OK, there is one big difference: the shell below uses ruby 1.9.3, while above is 1.8.7. Is there any known difference in string handling between the two versions ?

• Information on the BMPP File Extension/Format

  I am looking for information on the file type BMPp. Namely I need an application that can create this file type, preferably open source or free. Wikipedia says for BMP File Format that 'BMPp' is a "type code", which is the "mechanism used by pre-OSX Macs ... to denote a files format..." (Look in the little info-box of general information under "Type code"). Continuing my research, I found an old 2009 archived mailing list "Re: Incorrect png file type 'PNG' that talks about something related to another problem a developer is having. In the response he talks about there being variant file types, and lists BMPp as being linked to an old version of Graphics Converter. The company Lemkesoft sells Graphics Converter, which I am not willing to purchase. I can't imagine that the only program in existence to make a BMPp file is that program. There has got to be another way to make that file type, other than creating a BMP file and just renaming it to BMPp (unless of course it is really that easy)? This is the first time I've run into this file format, and it took a bit on Google, Bing, and Wikipedia to find the information that I've posted here. Any further help would be appreciated.

• Mail server DNS failed to resolved by Mac clients

  We have two internal DNS servers. One is located on a linux server box and the other is the router's DNS management. We set the linux box as primary DNS via DHCP and the router as secondary. We have a few Mac clients that are accessing our internal mail server (hostnamed "mail" internally). When using IMAP or SMTP against the mail server internally, the mac boxes will sometimes fail to locate the server. If I use NSLOOKUP I can see that "mail" is pointed to the correct IP address and is being resolved via the correct DNS server, but if I ping "mail" it fails. ~ (bash)$ nslookup mail Server: 254.254.254.206 Address: 254.254.254.206#53 Name: mail.example.com Address: 254.254.254.205 Note: I replaced our actual internal IP address with 254.254.254.* If I wait a few minutes (3-5 minutes), somehow it resolves itself and sends successfully. This happens multiple times a day. The /etc/hosts file on the mac boxes is the default config. ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. • How can I extend / create a new partition from the following setup?

  I'm a little unsure what to do in this situation. When I try to create a new simple volume from the unallocated space I get an error because I already have 4 partitions. I have no option to extend either my C:\ primary partition or the E:\ logical drive. C:\ - Gaming Win7 install. D:\ - Storage Unallocated Space - Would somehow like to install OSX on a partition from this space. E:\ - Software Development Win7 install. I:\ - Ignore this. It's an external 1TB HDD. Do I have any options that do not involve formatting / losing information on either C:\ or E:\? Thank you. Link to visual disk partitioning setup image. • GRUB 2 problem after Mac OS X update

  I have a MacBook Pro in dual boot Mac OS X / Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). When I boot it I have a rEFIt menu, and I can chose between Mac OS X and Linux. A few days ago I have updated Mac OS X from 10.7 (Lion) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) using a .dmg image provided by my company. Since then when I select Linux in rEFIt it says: No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key I have tried going to rEFIt partitioning tool. This is what I got: As suggested in Mac OSX Mavericks update rEFIT broken I wanted to fix the issue the same way as AndrewM, but I don't have the option "MBR table must be updated". Then I booted on Ubuntu 12.04 CD, chose repair broken system, chose root patition /dev/sda6 as this is where my Ubuntu file system is. I got a shell, but I don't really know how to repair the poblem since if it was just Windows dual boot. A GRUB update would solve the issue, but here I don't know where the GRUB 2 is installed. Here are results from Parted, and it is a bit confusing for me as the Mac partition is the one with boot: As you can see the entry 1 is an EFI system partition and is the boot partition, so I wonder if I should install GRUB there or in sda6, which is the Ubuntu filesystem. I am not sure should I work on rEFIt shell or Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I don't remember where GRUB was before update. UPDATE: using same link above I have tried RoundSparrow hilltx answer and installed rEFInd, but the result is same.... still no bootable device when I select Linux. UPDATE 2: just used alternate CD again, mounted on /dev/sda6 and the ran update-grub. It seemed to wok and started listing all my kernels. But after rebooting several times still no bootable device when I select Linux in rEFInd. UDATE 3: Have tried to boot from Ubuntu cd and select "boot from first available filesystem. I got error and dropped to grub rescue shell. • Terminal Colors Not Working

  I am accessing an Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS server via SSH from OSX. Recently the colors stopped working. I think it happened while I was installing/troubleshooting RVM, but I am not positive. In .bashrc I uncommeneted force_color_prompt=yes, and when I run env | grep TERM I get TERM=xterm-color. But still no colors. Any ideas? Thanks! • Introducing the Metro User Interface on Windows 2012

  Although I am a big fan of using PowerShell to do many of my server operations, that aspect is well covered by those far more knowledgeable than I, and there is vast information around the web already on that. The new Metro interface, and getting around both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 though is relatively new, even for those whop ran the previews. What is this? A blank Desktop!   Where did the start button go? Well, it is still there...sort of. It is hidden, and acts like an auto hidden component that appear only when the mouse is hovered over the lower left corner of the screen. Those familiar with Gnome or OSX can relate this to the "Hot Corners" functions. To get to the start button, hover your mouse in the very left corner of the task bar. Let it sit there a moment, and a small blue square with colored tiles in it called start will appear. Click it. I clicked it and now I have all the tiles..What is this?   Welcome to the Metro interface. This is a much more modern look, and although at first seems weird and cumbersome, I have actually found that it is a bit more extensible, allowing greater organization and customization than the older explorer desktop. If you look closely, you'll see each box represents either a program, or program group. First, a few basics about using the start view. First and foremost, a right mouse click will bring up a bar on the bottom, with an icon towards the right. Notice it is titled “All Apps”. An even easier way in many places is to hover your mouse in the exact opposite corner, in the upper right. A sidebar will open and expose what used to be a widget bar (remember Vista?), and there are options for Search, Start, and Settings.   Ok Great, but where is everything? It’s all there…Click the All Apps icon.   Look better? Notice the scroll bar at the bottom. Move it right..your desktop is sized to your content..so you can have a smaller, or larger amount of programs exposed. Each icon can be secondary clicked (right mouse click for most of us, and an options bar at the bottom, rather than the old small context menu, is opened with some very familiar options.   Notice the top of the Windows Explorer window has some new features. You still have your right mouse click functions, but since the shortcuts for these items already exist..just copy them. There are many ways, but here is a long way to show you more of the interface. 1. Right mouse click a program icon, and select the Open File Location option. 2. Trusty file manager opens…but if you look closely up at top edge of the window, you’ll see a nifty enhancement. An orange colored box that is titled Shortcut Tools and another lavender box Title Application tools. Each of these adds options at the top of the file manager window to make selection easy. Of course, you can still secondary click an item in the listing window too. 3. Click shortcut tools, right click your app shortcut and copy it. Then simply paste it into the desktop outside the File Explorer window Also note some of the newer features. The large icons up top below the menu that has many common operations. The options change as you select each menu item. Well, that’s it for this installment. I hope this helps you out.

• Software Center seems to freeze system when installing, syslog has "blocked for more than 120 seconds" errors

  12.04 (precise) 64-bit Kernel Linux 3.2.0-39 3.6GB memory Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 2.40GHz x2 WUBI-installed Ubuntu running on a MacBook Pro 7.1 with OSX running Vista via Boot Camp (hey, I like lots of OS's m'kay?) When installing from Ubuntu software center my system very frequently freezes. This has happened 4 of the last 5 installs. Most recently I was installing the Google Earth .deb from Google's website: clicking the .deb file automatically opens Software Center (otherwise I would have used Synaptic, as I've grown to expect Software Center to freeze my system and I'm rather tired of it.) By "freeze" I mean nothing works: no dash, no launcher, no mouse movement, no alt-tab, can't open terminal (keyboard does not work). Software center does show the "installing" icon but after that it greys out and I can't click anything. REISUB has no effect but a cold power-down and restart is possible. Occasionally, after 5-10 minutes, I'll be able to move the mouse / use the keyboard and run a launcher command or two, although other open apps (Chrome and Software Center) will still be greyed-out/frozen. (I've never waited longer than that - if still unresponsive after 15 minutes I just power down and restart.) Most recently, which is why I am finally posting a question, I waited about 15 minutes and was finally able to open System Monitor while this was going on. Processes tells me that System Monitor is using about 20% of CPU, and nothing else is using much (zeros mostly). In fact I didn't even see Software Center listed? However at this point the system finally partially unfroze, the installation completed, and while I wasn't about to close Software Center I was able to do a system shutdown and fresh restart and I went and took a look at the syslog. In /var/log/syslog I see a lot of ":blocked for more than 120 seconds" messages. Similar to ubuntu hang out with this message :blocked for more than 120 seconds Which has not been answered, and I'm not running a virtual machine. My full syslog with stack traces looks very, very similar to this: Why do tasks on Amazon Xen instance block for over 120 seconds causing server to hang? Note that that question was solved, but that's because the problem was being caused by Amazon and Amazon fixed the bug. I'm not running anything Amazon-related. My syslog does look very similar, however. My question is also similar to this: Troubleshooting server hang But the referenced "duplicate" in that question is about how to kill processes/restart when the system freezes. I know how to kill processes and restart. I want to figure out what is causing the problem so I can try to fix it. I realize that I could just use Synaptic instead of Ubuntu Software Center, but I'd like to try to solve the problem if possible. I'm thinking I should perhaps submit a bug report, but I wanted to first see if anyone else was having any similar problems, and if so what you all did to fix it. I see a number of questions about Software Center freezing and others, including those I linked, about the "blocked for more than 120 seconds" log error, but I didn't see any question that links the two. I did save a copy of the syslog report if anyone wants to see it, but as mentioned it's quite similar to the one posted in the Amazon-related question...and I didn't want to take up even more space unnecessarily as, my apologies - this question has already become extremely verbose!

• Android ADT Eclipse plugin, parseSDKContent failed

  I've just set up my first Android development environment consisting of Eclipse 3.5 Mac OSX 10.5 Android SDK for x86 macs ADT Eclipse plugin 0.9.6 I've set set $PATH to my SDK/tools directory (which shouldn't matter if I only use Eclipse right?) and started Eclipse, but when I try to set the path to the SDK in Eclipse, i get the error "parseSdkContent failed". • Problems with jQuery getJSON using local files in Chrome

  I have a very simple test page that uses XHR requests with jQuery's $.getJSON and $.ajax methods. The same page works in some situations and not in others. Specificially, it doesn't work in Chrome on Ubuntu. I'm testing on Ubuntu 9.10 with Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta and Mac OSX 10.6.2 with Chrome 5.0.307.9 beta. It works correctly when files are installed on a web server from both Ubuntu/Chrome and Mac/Chrome (try it out here). It works correctly when files are installed on local hard drive in Mac/Chrome (accessed with file:///...). It FAILS when files are installed on local hard drive in Ubuntu/Chrome (access with file:///...). • AppEngine JRuby - OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space - can it be solved?

  I use AppEngine JRuby on Rails (SDK version 1.3.3.1) - a problem I encounter often is that after a few requests the server is getting really SLOW, until it dies and throws OutOfMemoryError on the terminal (OSX). The requests themselves are very lightweight, not more than looking for an entity or saving it, using DataMapper. On appspot, this problem is not happening. Is there any way to enlarge the heap space for JRuby? • iPhone app linker error on Snow Leopard (Only on simulator)

  Im getting this linker error that won't let me compile. It only happens on the simulator. NOTE: - OSX 10.6.2 but had to use 10.5 as build target to avoid other linker errors - libxml2.dylib IS required and is in my Frameworks group - The other cited libraries I have never heard of. - Tried bringing in those other Libs under frameworks, didn't solve. • Help with stock ticker style scrolling using Core Animation

  Hi, I'm looking for some guidance on the best way to implement stock ticker style right-to-left scrolling of CALayers in Core Animation on OSX. I'm pretty new to Cocoa and don't know the best way to implement this. I have a continuous stream of news items and stock details that I turn into CALayers (made up of 1 image and a CATextLayer) and I want to animate the CALayers from right to left of my custom view. The news and stock information is constantly updating so I would like to add 1 item at a time to the view, scroll it right to left until the right-most point of the CALayer is showing, then add another CALayer to the view and start scrolling that as well. I would like to do this dynamic updating instead of taking a big snapshot of all my data, turning it into a big horizontal CALayer and scrolling that. I'm looking for guidance on how to achieve this sort of effect - do I manually animate each new CALayer along a path in the view? Or should I be using CAScrollLayer to achieve this effect?   Hi- I'm attempting to get my first "hello world" rails example going using the rails' getting started guide on my OSX 10.6.3 box. • How can I debug why this click handler never fires?

  I am going to be excrutiatingly detailed here. I am using Firefox 3.6.3 on Max OSX with Firebug 1.5.3. I have two versions of a project, one which works and one with a bug. One I downloaded and one I typed by hand. Take a guess which one doesn't work. They should be the same except that mine uses a newer version of jQuery and the files are named differently. jQuery version is not the issue. I made mine use the older jquery and I made the working one use the newer jquery. Either way, mine still broke and the downloaded one still works. I've busted my eyes trying to see how these projects are different. The only thing I don't want to do is copy the working code to the busted code because I need to be able to figure this stuff out when it is my own unique code causing similar issues. There are no errors that I can see in Firebug in my code, in fact, 2/3 of it works just fine. just the second button does nothing. So I wanted to step through. These are always eyeball errors and I really suck at seeing them. I put it on a public server. http://colleenweb.com/jqtests/ex71.html And I want to debug ex71.js If you firebug the working one and set a break point at line 13 in ex71.js the variable json has the expected values when you click on the second button. But If you firebug this one, it never gets there. I've been over the html and all the names of everything seem to match up. I also wonder why the buttons aren't right justified but that's a css thing. Please tell me what I'm missing, and more importantly, what tool/technique I could use to find these types of bugs.

  I've just upgraded my Mac to Snow Leopard and got my Rails environment up and running. The only difference -- OSX aside -- with my previous install is that I'm now running ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) [universal-darwin10.0] (Snow Leopard default) rather than 1.8.6. I'm now seeing deprecation warnings relating to OpenSSL when I run my code: warning: argumtents for OpenSSL::Cipher::Cipher#encrypt and OpenSSL::Cipher::Cipher#decrypt were deprecated; use OpenSSL::Cipher::Cipher#pkcs5_keyivgen to derive key and IV Example of my code which is causing these warnings (it decodes an encrypted string) on line 4: 1. def decrypt(data) 2. encryptor = OpenSSL::Cipher::Cipher.new('DES-EDE3-CBC') 3. key = "my key" 4. encryptor.decrypt(key) 5. text = encryptor.update(data) 6. text << encryptor.final 7. end I'm struggling to understand how I can resolve this, and Google isn't really helping. Should I try and downgrade to Ruby 1.8.6 (and if so, what's the best way of doing this?), should I try and just hide the warnings (bury my head in the sand?!) or is there an easy fix I can apply in the code?

• XNA Reach profile with VMWare - Vertex Buffers not working?

  Running XNA app, using Reach profile, in VMWare Fusion host OS Mac OSX, VM is Windows XP SP 3 (my dual-boot OS). Running on MacBook Pro w/NVidia 320M graphics card When I am booted in to XP natively, my code works. The code is drawing cubes that are set up using vertex buffers When another friend runs this same code on Windows 7, it also works for him just fine When I am running my code in the VM, it doesn't work. I have billboarding sprites running in a shader program and this part displays fine. I get no crashing or errors, the geometry just doesn't appear. I tried Debug and Release. This is very basic operation so I'm thinking VMWare isn't the problem, but it's my code....
