• How can I regain control over a "stuck" scroll bar?

  I normally have a lot of tabs open in the browser at one time, which normally doesn't cause any problems. Occasionally, though, the page will have fully rendered, the scroll bar is at the top of its track on the right, but placing the the mouse pointer on the scroll bar does not allow me to get control of it (and using the arrow at the bottom of the scroll bar doesn't work either). This seems to happen to me in both Firefox and Chrome, both latest versions. There is normally no load on the CPU, and while my memory usage can be high (especially with Chrome), I still usually have 25% left. I fear that this is one of those "for your own good" features, to prevent scrolling down a page that may still have elements loading and/or a stuck script, but I'm wondering whether or not there is a setting in Firefox or Chrome (or perhaps Windows in general) that will allow the scroll bar to be "released" even though the browser may be busy? It may be "2002" of me, but I wouldn't mind being able to scroll along gradually, even if the page hasn't had time to fully render all of the images, etc., yet. Does such an advanced setting exist "under the hood"?

• Windows 7 Loading Very Slow

  Hi guys, I've had a problem that only started to occur yesterday. When I boot into Windows 7 and log on to my user account, the computer gets very laggy and slow for at least 5 minutes. Icons take ages to load, and everything is rendered unclickable. This happens for about five minutes after which everything goes back to normal. I tried restarting a few times to see if this is a recurring problem, and it is. I ran a full system scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and found nothing wrong, and I also defragmented the disk to increase performance. However, the problem still exists. Edit: For the past day, I've been trying to install Ubuntu on the same laptop. When installing it on a partition didn't work, I decided to use Wubi. Could this somehow be the problem? Also, my hard drive gets hot a lot, so could the heat be affecting the hard drive and maybe making it defective? Any help on this issue would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

• Bad results converting PDF to EPS on Linux

  I'm having some trouble converting PDFs (created by Adobe Illustrator on a Mac) to EPS. I have tried several things but I am wondering if there is a better option. The following list is ordered by decreasing quality: inkscape --export-area-page --export-eps=out.eps in.pdf using the graphical program Inkscape works best, but is a bit slow; pdftops -eps in.pdf out.eps uses Poppler and works good and is fast; pdf2ps in.pdf out.eps uses ghostscript and works ok for simple documents; convert in.pdf out.eps uses ImageMagick and always rasterizes the image. I haven't tested the following: acroread -toPostScript use acroread (Linux only) Some issues I've found: Transparency is not supported in EPS, but instead of flattening the layers, most programs rasterize the image producing big files and ugly graphs. Inkscape does this best by only rasterizing the unsupported area. Gradients are rendered properly by Inkscape, but Poppler somehow chops up the gradient into many shapes of different colors. Greek symbols are seemingly not supported by Ghostscript and are rasterized (using pdf2ps). What are your experiences for this kind of task? Did I forgot certain programs and/or command line options that improve quality? I found some posts on this, but not a (thorough) comparison of possibilities, please correct me if I'm wrong.   Programs I found I found these programs to capture OpenGL 3D scene : 3D Ripper, OpenGL and D3D geometry capture, there are some solved problems with 3D Ripper GLIntercept captures OpenGL function calls OpenGL Extractor captures 3d geometry; should work as plugin for GLIntercept another tool to capture OpenGL 3D data EDIT: There is also HijackGL which changes how a scene is rendered so it probably can be used to capture geometry; it is backed up by a academic paper; it is just just a nice program, not related to what I want i think (or it would might be hard to change it to be for what I want, because it would require programming). 3D Ripper captures geometry, textures and shaders. OpenGL Extractor captures just geometry ... General questions about such programs What is Your experience with these programs? Which of these programs would You recommmend? Do You know other such programs? Were there any problems with them, or are there problems with them in general? Are there programs which work best overall, or is it specific to certain 3d applications? What I need to do? I am looking to program which can capture 3d geometry for study purposes. And also for a program to capture 3D animation (frames of 3d animation). I tried only 3D Ripper because application I try to capture data from is on Direct 3D. 3D Ripper works with at least Direct 3D 9, this application has Direct 3D 6.   All emails sent from the server are displaying Cyrillic letters as weird characters, for example: Можно. Regular alphabet letters are properly rendered. I searched all across the web but was not able to find any solutions. Here is some information about the system: Dedicated server with Windows 2008 and IIS7 Application are in PHP (run as FastCGI) If of any importance, Smartermail is installed on the server The emails are sent using PHPs mail() function through a Drupal website. Encoding on that site is set up properly and there are no display issues on front end. Where is the problem? How can I make Cyrillic letters to be properly encoded? Any help is greatly appreciated. • How to configure mod_proxy_balancer to gracefully fail under high load

  We have a system which has one Apache instance in front of multiple tomcats. These tomcats then connect to various databases. We balance the load to the tomcat with mod_proxy_balancer. Currently we are receiving 100 requests a second, the load on the Apache server is quite low, but due to database heavy operations on the tomcats, the load there is roughly 25% (of what I estimate they can handle). In a few weeks there is an event happening and we estimate that our requests will jump significant, maybe by a factor of 10. I'm doing everything I can do reduce the load on our tomcats, but I know we are going to run out of capacity, so I would like to fail gracefully. By this I mean, instead of trying to deal with too many connections which all timeout, I would like Apache to somehow monitor average response time, and as soon as the response time to Tomcat is getting above some threshold, I would like a error page displayed. This means that users who are lucky still get a page rendered quickly, and those who are unlucky get a error page quickly. Instead of everyone waiting far too long for their page, and eventually everyone timing out, and the database being swamped with queries which are never used. Hopefully this makes sense, so I was looking for suggestions on how I could achieve this. thanks

• RDP Connection to Windows 7 stays really slow

  I have an Issue with connecting to Windows 7 via RDP. I can open an RDP Session, but regardless of any settings, the responce times are really long. This in particulary is the case when opening a web page in a browser. I've tried IE, Firefox and Google Chrome. I also use RDP connection to a Windows 2008 Server from the same client machine, and the speed is very normal with all features turned on. We have Gigabit Ethernet here. So I think it can not be the client's fault. What concerns Windows 7 Machine, I've tried shutting all the sraphic features off and turning the color levels to 256 colors. Result - the same. If I work locally on the machine - I can not see any lags. What else have I tried: Using old RDP 5 Client from Microsoft Setting network autotuninglevel as seen here Do You have some ideas? Thanks in advance! Update the problem seems to be with rendering window contents. All the window borders and pannes are rendered pretty quickly, but the content shows up very slowly. Also mouse movements are recognised by the Win 7 box only after some period. Are there some hidden settings in the RDP, where one could turn some advanced features off or turn some caching on? I use Bitmap Caching, but this apparently doesn't help.

• Require and Includes not Functioning Nginx Fpm/FastCGI

  I've split up my FPM pools so that php will run under each individual user and set the routing correctly in my vhost.conf files to pass the proper port number. But I must have something incorrect in my environment because on this new domain I set up, require, require_once, include, include_once do not function, or rather, they may not be getting passed up to the interpreter to be rendered as php. • RDP Connection to Windows 7 stays really slow

  I have an Issue with connecting to Windows 7 via RDP. I can open an RDP Session, but regardless of any settings, the responce times are really long. This in particulary is the case when opening a web page in a browser. I've tried IE, Firefox and Google Chrome. I also use RDP connection to a Windows 2008 Server from the same client machine, and the speed is very normal with all features turned on. We have Gigabit Ethernet here. So I think it can not be the client's fault. What concerns Windows 7 Machine, I've tried shutting all the sraphic features off and turning the color levels to 256 colors. Result - the same. If I work locally on the machine - I can not see any lags. What else have I tried: Using old RDP 5 Client from Microsoft Setting network autotuninglevel as seen here Do You have some ideas? Thanks in advance! Update the problem seems to be with rendering window contents. All the window borders and pannes are rendered pretty quickly, but the content shows up very slowly. Also mouse movements are recognised by the Win 7 box only after some period. Are there some hidden settings in the RDP, where one could turn some advanced features off or turn some caching on? I use Bitmap Caching, but this apparently doesn't help.

• Telugu (unicode) font rendering in emacs

  [I asked the following question in stackoverflow, and I have been redirected here. I hope I can get some answers here. My question at stackoverflow had two small images showing the example rendering of text. As a new user at superuser, I am not being allowed to include them here, nor I am allowed to post more than one hyperlink. And, I don't have enough reputation on SO to migrate that question. Please look at the stackoverflow question for the images. Sorry about the inconvenience.] I sometimes edit text in telugu language. However, when I open the file (UTF-8 encoded) in GNU emacs (version 23.1.50.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty) the text rendering is incorrect. The same text file opened in gedit is rendered correctly. • OS X (10.6) Apache Sudden Death, Nginx not working either...

  Hi, I turned on my computer today and apache wasn't working. This is weird as its been working for the last 6 months without issue. The only thing I did which may of caused a problem, is I uninstalled a bunch of gems. This shouldn't be the issue though as apache doesn't rely on gems. I decided to give nginx a try to see if it would work and have the exact same issue. The symtoms are: I go to http://localhost and get the browsers default 404 page (not rendered by apache/nginx) No error is found anywhere (I checked all logs) Apache is rinning (also tried with Nginx) How can I debug this to find the root of the problem? I can't think of why this would be happening. I've tried repairing permissions in case this was the issue, apparently it wasn't. Everything was working the other day, and nothing changed in the apache config. • Permanent fix for unicode characters not displaying correctly (as boxes)

  Please read this entire message before replying. First I know how to fix the issue on a temporary basis. I am looking for a permanent fix. I work with foreign language files a lot. Unfortunately sometimes all the unicode characters in windows explorer, notepad, and other places (as rendered by windows, probably GDI) do not display correctly. That is they display as square blocks, where as they had just been displaying correctly. There are countless methods to temporarily correct the issue. But again, I want a way to permanently resolve the issue. What I have tried: The silly "Hide fonts based on language settings". This setting only applies to what fonts you see in the fonts folder and font dropdowns. It doesn't disable foreign fonts (doesn't work, or if it does, it is temporary). Deleting the font cache file and rebooting (works.. usually, temporary solution). Changing my locale and then back (sometimes works, temporary solution). Rebooting my PC and getting lucky (50-50 chance, temporary solution). Changing my keyboard input/adding foreign keyboard (temporary solution that only seems to work once). Reinstalling windows (temporary solution, sometimes lasts a few months though, I have done this 7 times across 3 computers) What I have not tried: Buying Windows Ultimate and installing the interface packs. This is not a solution. I can't read Japanese/Chinese and I do not want my interface in those languages. What I will not do: Switch to a different brand operating system (unix, linux, mac os x) Switch to an older version of windows (Windows Vista, XP, 2000, etc). So can anyone recommend a permanent fix for the problem?

• Adding a transaction ID to ruby-on-rails logs

  We have a RoR app (rails version 3.2.15 right now). As it has been getting busier, the log-files it's producing are becoming less and less useful for troubleshooting. • How to get IE to open JavaScript as text

  I am running IE 9. Up until last week sometime, if I would put the URL of a JavaScript file in the address bar, it would show the JavaScript as text in the browser window. Now when I do that, it wants to download the JavaScript file. How can I revert it to the previous handling? This is annoying since I'm developing a web application and if I can get it to display the .js files as text in the browser, then I can refresh it to force the cache to update. Update: I've tested on several co-workers machines. For some, browsing to .js files renders them in the browser (IE 9 in all cases). In others, it asks for a download. File associations don't seem to have any effect. One co-worker we tested with IE and Chrome. IE wanted to download it, but Chrome rendered it as text. This makes me think it's an IE issue and not an OS issue.

• Nvidia GTX 660m crashes games

  I just recently bought a Lenovo y580 with both HD intel graphics and an Nvidia GTX 660m. It works great except for one thing: playing games. Every time I load a game, either with Steam or Games for Windows Live, games will end up crashing. I've already talked with lenovo tech support and they couldn't help other than send my new laptop for repair which would take 7 days. So before I do that I thought I'd ask around. These are the games I've tested and what happens when they load: Civilization V: Game loads fine but once it gets loaded to the game, there's noticeable "tearing" popping up and certain things flash. Within a minute of this, the game crashes. Does the same thing regardless if Vsync is on or off. Total War Shogun2: Game gets to the menu screen. The background of the menu screen shows what is expected - slideshow of in-game environments rendered on high settings (this is expected). However, within 2 seconds of the menu loading up it crashes. Age of Empires 3 (Non-steam): This game is several years old so it should work on this brand new laptop fine. However the results are similar to that of Civilization V. Noticeable "Tearing" and after a few seconds it'll freeze/crash. I've done tests on all these games with both the latest stable Nvidia driver 285 as well as the nightly build 307. In addition, Nvidia control panel is set on using the dedicated graphics card for all programs. So is there anything I can do to fix this or will I have to send it back for a week to tech support?
