• Word 2010 Navigation Pane and more

I have been using Office 2010 since Beta1 and have not looked back since. I am currently on an internal RC, but will upgrade tomorrow to the RTM version. There are a plethora of new productivity features and for Word 2010 the one that overshadows everything else, IMO, is the Navigation Pane. I could spend time describing it here, but I'll never be able to cover it more thoroughly than what the product team has on their blog post. You enable it via the "Navigation Pane" checkbox in...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • The incomplete list of impolite WP7 dev requests

In my previous list of WP7 user requests, I piled all of my user hopes and dreams for my new WP7 phone (delivery date: who the hell knows) onto the universe as a way to make good things happen. And all that’s fine, but I’m not just a user; like most of my readers, I’m also a developer and have a need to control my phone with code. I have a long list of applications I want to write and an even longer list of applications I want other developers to write for me. Today at 1:30p...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Windows Embedded Compact 7

- by Valter Minute
I’m back from Seattle where I attended the MVP Summit and presented the Windows Embedded Compact 7 training materials during the Train The Trainer in Bellevue (many thanks to all the people attending and providing great suggestions to improve the materials!). The MVP summit was a great chance to discover new things about all the different technologies, to see old friends and meet new ones. The TTT location (Microsoft training facilities at Lincoln square in Bellevue) was great and here’s the landscape that the attendees could enjoy (partially ruined by my presence in the foreground!). In the meantime Windows Embedded Compact 7 has been released: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/evaluate/windows-embedded-compact-7.aspx You can download an evaluation version and start to discover its new features (SMP support, support for 3GBs of RAM, Silverlight for Windows Embedded tools, ARM v5,v6 and v7 compilers and many more…) and, maybe, decide to attend a training about it.

• WebForms vs MVC (again)

There's a new video up on www.asp.net which aims to help developers pick between ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC. The video boils down to 5 benefits per technology which Microsoft thinks you should consider. Let's go over the points, shall we? First, ASP.NET WebForms: 1 - Familiar control and event base programming model The claim here is that the ASP.NET model is comfortable for WinForm programmers (thankfully this unbiased analysis left out who it's more familiar for). This is largely...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • A C# implementation of the CallStream pattern

Dusan published this interesting post a couple of weeks ago about a novel JavaScript chaining pattern: http://dbj.org/dbj/?p=514 Its similar to many existing patterns, but the syntax is extraordinarily terse and it provides a new form of friction-free, plugin-less extensibility mechanism. Heres a JavaScript example from Dusans post: CallStream("#container") (find, "div") (attr, "A", 1) (css, "color", "#fff") ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Get your content off Blogger.com

Due to blogger.com deprecating FTP users I've decided to move my blog. When I think of the content of a blog, 4 items come to mind: blog posts, comments, binary files that the blog posts linked to (e.g. images, ZIP files) and the CSS+structure of the blog. 1. Binaries The binary files you used in your blog posts are sitting on your own web space, so really blogger.com is not involved with that. Nothing for you to do at this stage, I'll come back to these in another post. 2. CSS and structure...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • UppercuT – Custom Extensions Now With PowerShell and Ruby

Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. If you dont like what the step is doing and/or you want to replace its entire functionality,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Simple ViewModel Locator for MVVM: The Patients Have Left the Asylum

Ive been toying with some ideas for MVVM lately. Along the way I have been dragging some friends like Glenn Block and Ward Bell along for the ride. Now, normally its not so bad, but when I get an idea in my head to challenge everything I can be interesting to work with :). These guys are great and I highly encourage you all to get your own personal Glenn and Ward bobble head dolls for your home. But back to MVVM Ive been exploring the world of View first again. • Azure Boot Camp

- by Brian Schroer
Belated thanks to Perficient for sponsoring (and providing lunch, which was a nice unadvertised surprise) and to Avichal Jain and Brian Blanchard for presenting at the St. Louis Azure Boot Camp May 13-14. There was a little more upfront discussion of “What is Cloud Computing and Why is it important?” than I thought necessary (I would think that people signing up for a two-day Azure event would already be convinced that it’s a worthwhile thing), but we put on our boots and fired up Visual Studio soon enough. The good news for developers, as with most of Microsoft’s recent initiatives (e.g Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 development), is that you can leverage the skills you already have. If you’ve developed service-oriented applications, you’ve got a big head start. If a free Azure Boot Camp event is coming to your area (here’s the schedule), be sure to check it out. If not, you can download the slides and labs from their web site and “throw your own”.

• Visual Studio 2010 RC and Crystal Reports 2008 Just Works

I have Crystal Reports 2008. This is the full application, not the Crystal Reports extension embedded into Visual Studio. This morning I pulled a solution with many projects and many crystal report files into Visual Studio 2010 for the first time. This application originated in VS2003, migrated to VS2005/.NET 2.0, migrated again to VS2008 (still .NET 2.0) and now migrated to VS2010 (still .NET 2.0). Wow everything is SO much faster working with this solution in VS2010. It loads up so quickly. It...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? A few days ago I was contacted by Lianping Chen a doctoral researcher from the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre. Lianping is doing research on how to elicit architectural significant requirements and he asked me a few questions, which I though, might be interesting to a wider audience. 1. Do you agree that architecture design and requirements elicitation are usually in parallel or have a big time overlap? In other words, Architectural...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? SP1 for VS 2010 just hit the web today. Check it out at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983509/en-usHTH This should fix lots of big and little things such as startup time, bugs and more. Plus there are tons of features in there too for web, xaml, and other application types. I am really excited about the unit testing and load testing features that were added. Theres also an update for .Net 4 framework. And check out the new Silverlight performance wizard. Lots of really cool stuff. Get it today! Download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=11ea69cb-cf12-4842-a3d7-b32a1e5642e2

• Tip: Replacing Html.Encode Calls With New Html Encoding Syntax

Like the well disciplined secure developer that you are, when you built your ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application, you remembered to call Html.Encode every time you output a value that came from user input. Didnt you? Well, in ASP.NET MVC 2 running on ASP.NET 4, those calls can be replaced with the new HTML encoding syntax (aka code nugget). Ive written a three part series on the topic.
