• Monit won't restart process

  I just don't get it. monit behaves very strangely... check process thin with pidfile /var/run/thin.4567.pid start program = "/srv/Pusher/server start" stop program = "/srv/Pusher/server stop" if failed host 127.0.0.1 port 4567 protocol http then restart group server this is the process that should be restarted. So I tested monit and stopped the process. But it is showing only this: Process 'thin' status Does not exist monitoring status monitored data collected Wed Mar 24 01:18:55 2010 when I run "monit validate" it starts the service. Am I missing something? Thx

• Dual monitors though 1 HDMI port

  I currently have a Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop connected to a 24" HP monitor (w2448hc). Im thinking on getting a second one, however am wondering what i need for the setup (hardware wise). Also I was wondering it there is any down side to it, or something i should be aware of. For example, image quality loss, GPU overloading, or anything important I should know. More than anything Im interested in your advice. Also the monitors do have built in speakers (HDMI sound output), is the sound going to be reproduced by only one monitor or both? • IMAP email migration from Apptix to Office 365

  I am having issues setting up a migration from Apptix to Office 365 of 41 users in my company. I've found a couple guides on the Microsoft website about how to do it (Thank you Google) but I keep coming up with problems. I am trying to set up a mailbox migration through IMAP to get all of my users' emails over to Office 365 before we make the transition over from Apptix. One of the forums suggested using IMAP, since a CSV file can be uploaded to Office 365 and it will check for incoming mail for each user every 24 hours. My problem is that when I do this, I just get errors. • automysqlbackup not working weirdly on shared host

  I'm on HostGator and I have not-root-level SSH access. I manually setup automysqlbackup in a /home/user/automysqlbackup folder. Created a file called runbackup in the same folder, chmod +x'ed it. The content : /home/user/automysqlbackup/automysqlbackup /home/user/automysqlbackup/myserver.conf Now, when I run ./runbackup from shell, no email is sent. I've setup a daily cron job. The crontab line reads - 24 06 * * * /home/user/automysqlbackup/runbackup When the crontab is run, I do get an email, but, the subject is WARNING: Error Reported - MySQL Backup Log and SQL Files for localhost - 012-03-19_06h24m The email does have an attachment, but it just has the SQL for creating tables. No data in the several rows at all. I don't know what wrong I'm doing and this is freaking me out! I tried writing a custom script as well, using this guide, but mutt doesn't send email, then. The OS used by HostGator is CentOS.

  I'm having a bit of a problem with cronjobs for backups. • Are Mac Minis suitable for a proper desktop computer?

  I've read about a lot of people using their Mac Minis as a file server, or media centre or something similar. Does the mini function alright as a standard desktop PC? The Mac will be used primarily for web development, that is, it will need to run Coda, Photoshop, possible Firefox and Safari at the same time. So it will need suitable performance. Or am I better off getting an iMac? I though the mini looked like a good option because: cheaper I already have a keyboard, mouse and 24" monitor I could use a KVM between the mini and PC Also, does the mini support multiple monitors? • Tomcat 6 HTTPS connector: keep alive timeout not being respected

  I'm using Tomcat 6.0.24 on Ubuntu (JDK 1.6) with an app that does Comet-style requests on an HTTPS connector (directly against Tomcat, not using APR). I'd like to set the keep-alive to 5 minutes so I don't have to refresh my long-polling connections. Here is my config: <Connector port="8443" protocol="HTTP/1.1" SSLEnabled="true" maxThreads="1000" keepAliveTimeout="330000" scheme="https" secure="true" clientAuth="false" sslProtocol="TLS" /> Unfortunately it seems that the server closes the connection after 65 seconds. The pcap from a sample session goes something like this: T=0 Client sends SYN to server, handshake etc. T=65 Server sends FIN to client T=307 Client sends FIN to server (I'm guessing the 5 minute timeout on the client is due to the HTTP lib not detecting the socket close on the server end, but in any case -- the server shouldn't be closing the connection that early) (edit: this works as expected when using the standard HTTP connector)

• Blocking a distributed, consistent spam attack? Could it be something more serious?

  I will do my best to try and explain this as it's strange and confusing to me. I posted a little while ago about a sustained spike in mysql queries on a VPS I had recently setup. It turned out to be a single post on a site I was developmenting. The post had over 30,000 spam comments! Since the site was one I was slowly building I hadn't configured the anti-spam comment software yet. I've since deleted the particular post which has given the server a break but the post's url keeps on getting hit. The frustrating thing is every hit is from a different IP. How do I even start to block/prevent this? Is this even something I need to worry about? Here are some more specific details about my setup, just to give some context: Ubuntu 8.10 server with ufw setup The site I'm building is in Drupal which now has Mollom setup for spam control. It wasn't configured before. The requests happen inconsistently. Sometimes it's every couple seconds and other times it's a an or so between hits. However it's been going on pretty much constantly like that for over a week. • pyscripter Rpyc error

  pyscripter 2.5.3.0 x64, python 2.7.7 anaconda 2.0.1, windows 7 I was using pyscripter and EPD python happily in 32 bit, no problem. Just changed to 64 bit anaconda version and re-installed everything but now pyscripter cannot import rpyc -- it runs with internal engine (no anaconda), but no such error in pure python. • Understanding the memory consumption on iPhone

  Hello! I am working on a 2D iPhone game using OpenGL ES and I keep hitting the 24 MB memory limit – my application keeps crashing with the error code 101. I tried real hard to find where the memory goes, but the numbers in Instruments are still much bigger than what I would expect. I ran the application with the Memory Monitor, Object Alloc, Leaks and OpenGL ES instruments. When the application gets loaded, free physical memory drops from 37 MB to 23 MB, the Object Alloc settles around 7 MB, Leaks show two or three leaks a few bytes in size, the Gart Object Size is about 5 MB and Memory Monitor says the application takes up about 14 MB of real memory. I am perplexed as where did the memory go – when I dig into the Object Allocations, most of the memory is in the textures, exactly as I would expect. But both my own texture allocation counter and the Gart Object Size agree that the textures should take up somewhere around 5 MB. I am not aware of allocating anything else that would be worth mentioning, and the Object Alloc agrees. Where does the memory go? (I would be glad to supply more details if this is not enough.) Update: I really tried to find where I could allocate so much memory, but with no results. What drives me wild is the difference between the Object Allocations (~7 MB) and real memory usage as shown by Memory Monitor (~14 MB). Even if there were huge leaks or huge chunks of memory I forget about, the should still show up in the Object Allocations, shouldn’t they? I’ve already tried the usual suspects, ie. the UIImage with its caching, but that did not help. Is there a way to track memory usage “debugger-style”, line by line, watching each statement’s impact on memory usage? What I have found so far: I really am using that much memory. It is not easy to measure the real memory consumption, but after a lot of counting I think the memory consumption is really that high. My fault. I found no easy way to measure the memory used. The Memory Monitor numbers are accurate (these are the numbers that really matter), but the Memory Monitor can’t tell you where exactly the memory goes. The Object Alloc tool is almost useless for tracking the real memory usage. When I create a texture, the allocated memory counter goes up for a while (reading the texture into the memory), then drops (passing the texture data to OpenGL, freeing). This is OK, but does not always happen – sometimes the memory usage stays high even after the texture has been passed on to OpenGL and freed from “my” memory. This means that the total amount of memory allocated as shown by the Object Alloc tool is smaller than the real total memory consumption, but bigger than the real consumption minus textures (real – textures < object alloc < real). Go figure. I misread the Programming Guide. The memory limit of 24 MB applies to textures and surfaces, not the whole application. The actual red line lies a bit further, but I could not find any hard numbers. The consensus is that 25–30 MB is the ceiling. When the system gets short on memory, it starts sending the memory warning. I have almost nothing to free, but other applications do release some memory back to the system, especially Safari (which seems to be caching the websites). When the free memory as shown in the Memory Monitor goes zero, the system starts killing. I had to bite the bullet and rewrite some parts of the code to be more efficient on memory, but I am probably still pushing it. I

Looking at the example config file: cat /usr/share/doc/dovecot-common/dovecot/example-config/dovecot.conf was of no help. Dovecot is running: ps -A | grep 'dovecot' 9663 ? 00:00:00 dovecot But I can't seem to get that elusive "dovecot-auth" process. Anyone know what's going on?

• Slab uses 88Gb of 128Gb available. What could cause this?

  We run a debian 2.6.26-2-amd64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a server with 128 Gb. Recently it our available memory became rather low. Looking at the /proc/meminfo showed that the Slab was using 88Gb, which is counted in the used memory off course. Is this a problem? I suspect that memory will be freed when necessary, but I don't know if that could have unwanted side effects. Why would Slab need that much memory? Is there a clear cause for that? can we avoid this to happen in the future?   I have a RAID6 array managed by LSI 9286-8e card. I also have Sans Digital 24-bay NexentaSTOR JBOD enclosure with SAS extender built-in. They are connected to separate UPS devices. Normally, I'd shut down the PC, leaving RAID6 in healthy state. But today the power to JBOD enclosure was cut but PC kept running. After restarting the PC, all disks in RAID6 have lit up RED, and the only option in LSI MegaRAID manager app was to reset each disk to unassigned, thereby loosing all data on RAID6 array. Thankfully, I am only testing, but how would I recover if this were to happen in production?

• Static route in conflict with a default route

  Hi guys, I have a default route configured. 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.1 I'd like to add a static route to pass traffic destined for 192.168.1.51 via a load balancer's redundant virtual interface at 192.168.1.2. ip route add 192.168.1.51 mask 255.255.255.255 via 192.168.1.2 When I try to add the static route I get this error. Error: either "to" is duplicate or "default" is garbage." It doesn't want to add the static route because it's in conflict with the default route. Is there a way around this? Regards Ossan

• Smart card / auditable access for rack KVM tray

  Is there such a thing as a KVM Tray for a standard 19" rack whose use can be validated by a smartcard (or some other auditable authentication method)? It looks like we have a security requirement where just because users have a key to the rack doesn't mean they will be allowed to use the console inside the rack, and rather than just lock the console (and keep track of who has keys), we would prefer to be able to audit the actual user that was attached at the KVM. (It's worth mentioning that I'm aware of the Raritan devices, but they surely can't be the only ones) (If these things existed, I don't think half of the tratoirs that somehow manage to infiltrate CTU on the TV show 24 would ever get away with anything)

• OSX: Python packages fail to install, error message "/usr/local/bin: File Exists"

  I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory. Peculiar, I thought, so then I tried a Anchorage:local khotchkiss$ ls -a -l total 26168 drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 204 Dec 26 20:18 . drwxr-xr-x@ 14 root wheel 476 Feb 24 12:54 .. -rwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 13395080 Oct 22 23:04 bin drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 Dec 26 20:18 git drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Dec 18 11:31 include drwxr-xr-x 12 root wheel 408 Dec 18 11:31 lib And haven't a clue of what the 'bin' is, why its so large, and why its preventing me from installing python packages. Any clue?

• How to recover bitlocker encrypted partition that is now 'unallocated'/'free space'?

  My hard drive had 5 partitions(including 1(some 4-5GB) bit locker encrypted one). When I used disk mgmt I could view 2 partitions(24.4GB and 8.94GB) in green colour labeled Empty space. So, I wanted to merge them and I used minitool partition wizard for the purpose. I don't know, what that software did, but all I was left with 2 partitions and lots of green free space. I recovered 2 partitions using EaseUS partition master, but the bitlocker encrypted partition cannot be searched by it(and also minitool partition recovery). Now, the disk mgmt shows 2 free space partitions of 28.36GB and 8.94GB respectively. P.S. - It contains very important data.

  I have a ZyXel GS2200-24 managed switch, and a free-radius server running on Ubuntu 11.10. Radius is configured and when I log into the switch the authentication goes through Radius. Now, I'm trying to ensure that access to web resources (as an example, I set up a web server on the ip 192.168.1.2) requires first authenticating with radius, before the switch will allow the connection. Am I correct that this should be handled at the switch level? What are these rules usually called / how are they usually defined?

• Linux, fdisk: change order of partitions

  I have a harddrive with 24 logical partitions on it. Half of them are Linux and half are windows. Current ordering is: 3 Linux partitions; 12 windows partitions; 9 Linux partitions. In this setup, Windows can access any of partition (no limits on partition number), but Linux can't access sda16, sda17 ... Can I change numbering of partitions without moving them on disk? I want to put all Linux partitions to be <16; and windows partitions to be 16, so linux will be able to access all linux partitions. I have fdisk/sfdisk and it sees all partitions.

• Q8300 Core-2 Quad vs X3360 Xeon

  I'm looking at this ABMX server, and trying to decide on the CPU. I'm purchasing 2 servers, to be used as dedicated web and DB servers for a web site that has low traffic now but could ramp up quickly. Just trying to decide if it is worth about $200 more (per server) for the Xeon vs the core-2. Passmark rates them at 3567 and 4153, which didn't seem that different. I'm not planning at this point to need virtualization. I did hear rumors that Xeon stands up better in a 24/7 server environment, but heard others say there wasn't that much difference. Planning to run Windows Server 2008, likely the R2 release, with 8GB RAM.

  Hi , It's 3 days I'm trying to install SqlServer 2005 under Windows 7 64 bit on my machine . First let me tell you what I've done and what I've got till now . 1-I Installed Windows 7 64 Bit on my computer 2-I tried to install SQl Server 2005 "Developer Edition" 2.1 But in "System Configuration Check" Page i recieved 2 warning , One for "IIS Feature Requirement" and another for "ASP.NET Version Registration Rquired" . 2.1.1 . I installed "Internet Information Services" from "Turn Windows features on or off" section in control panel 2.1.2 I Enabled reporting service 32 bit from "Inetpub= AdminScripts = adsutil.vbs 2.2 At this stage There was no waring in System Configuration Check 3- So I installed SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition By all default settings 4- I installed Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 64 bit Now when when i run "Management Studio" There is no name in "Server name" section . I typed my Computer name Or "." and i got this Error : A network -related instance-specific error occurred while establishinga connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider , error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server ) ( Microsoft SQL Server , Error :2) . I googled some for this Error and some people said follow this instruction: Startsql server 2005Configuration toolsSql Server Surface Configuration AreaSurface Area Configuration for services and Connections But i got this Error : No SQl SErver 2005 Components were found on the specified computer . Either no components are installed , or you are not a administrator on this computer (SQLSAC) I'm really tired because of that , and i don't know what's wrong with this . Some more information : I have no additonal software on my computer , like Antivirus or Proxy I tried all step with "Standard Edition" either , but no difference My user is Administrator I tried more than 5 times all those steps including re-installing Windows 7 . Please help me , I'm losing all my hair
