I have 20 PCs (Windows XP) in remote locations connecting to the same server (Windows Server 2003) using Remote Desktop over a VPN. On just one of the PCs the remote desktop screen flashes (redraws) multiple times after connecting, the others don't. The screen resolution is the same: local is 800x600 32bit; RDP file is set to full screen, 256 color; remote when connected is 800x600 8bit color.
Any suggestions what the problem might be, or what to investigate next?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and the hard drive is failing and I'd like to get a new one.
What I'm wondering is, do I need to buy a hard drive specific to my computer model, or are laptop harddrives usually fairly generic? (If that's the case then I can shop around for the best value.)
I have been contributing to Stanford's Folding@Home project for some time with most of the computers I own.
I just installed the Windows client on a new machine running Windows 7, but see that the F@H process only binds to one CPU core. Is this due to it being run on Windows? (I have the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 installed.)
On the Mac and under 64-bit Linux distros, it will run across all available CPU cores.
Hello,
I have a SVG document that is made of several lines and arcs that should form a continuous outline of some figure. How can I join all of those pieces into one path?
When Windows 7 is configured to automatically update at a certain time (say Friday 5pm), is that also when it tries to download updates, or does it pull in the updates throughout the week, and only installs them at the update time?
UPDATE:
So I actually want the machines to download during one set of times (9am-3pm Mon-Fri), but install during another set of times (e.g. 5pm Friday). Is there a way to achieve this?
I have a rather big directory on one server (over 4000 files), which I'd like to copy to another server (which contains a previous version of this directory). rsync is the first option, but it will put the destination folder into waiting status for a rather long period of time (more than a minute).
I'd like to do it a bit differently:
gzip the source folder
scp the archive to the destination server
gunzip the file there
delete the archive at the source and the destination
What is the best way to accomplish all this?
Is it possible to copy an XP Mode Virtual PC image from one computer to a completely different computer (not on the network, not related in any way whatsoever)?
I tried this, but it only would seem to work on the same computer:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/21904-virtual-xp-machine-copy.html
When I copy it to another computer and modify the settings as described above, the cursor just jumps around all over the screen and never starts.
I recently came across this product:
http://ppa-usa.com/shared-network-hub-4-port-usb.html
The only problem is, this is nearly opposite of what I need.
Ideally, I'm looking for a USB hub-like device that can accept at least two devices for input, and toggle those two devices between at least 2 PC's. The hub linked above appears to be only able to accept one device.
Does anyone know of such a product?

Say you have a directory with tens of thousands of messages in it. And you want to separate the spam from the non-spam.
Specifically, you would like to:
Run spamassassin against the directory, tagging each message with an X-Spam-Flag: YES if it thinks it's spam
Have a tcsh shell or perl one-liner grep all mail with the flag and move those mails to /tmp/spam
What command can you run to accomplish this? For example, some pseudocode:
/usr/local/bin/spamassassin -eL ./Maildir/cur/* | grep "X-Spam-Flag: YES" | mv %1 /tmp/spam
I have a batch file that changes a few registry files, and then restarts explorer.exe so that they take effect. I'm using the command taskkill /f /im explorer.exe and then explorer.exe which of course kills all the explorer.exe processes, including the explorer windows I have open.
Obviously, I am using the option to Launch folder windows in a separate process.
Is there any way I can determine which instance of explorer.exe is the main one, and just kill that?
Suppose that a motherboard doesnt ship with the bios that supports your cpu, do you still get into bios and can flash it without a cpu or do one have to geardown and plug in a supported cpu and then update bios?
I am new in this field.I want to connect to the LinkedIn from my Native Application and post a blog from that also so any one please help me how can i connect to the linkedIn.If possible then explain me with Example.
We need to use SSL on our internal network for a few sensitive applications, and I need to know if there is a difference between a self signed certificate and one signed by a Windows Server CA that we setup? Do we need to setup a CA?
In MySQL you have to authorized a user based on the name of the origin network. From my network to a remote one all connections appear as sent from mail.mycompany.com. But connections to another remote network it appears with a different origin. How to discover which name/ip it is using?
I tried tcpdump and netstat in the destination but it is difficult to find my connection among billions of others.
In my case the destination is a Windows Server 2003
I have a column of cells, all of which I want to equal the value in another cell. I highlight the cell and type = and then do that again below, and then I highlight the cells and drag down but the column of cells equals a parallel column of values. I want it to fix to one cell. Does this make sense? I'm sure it's easy but I cannot figure it out.
I need to try Linux (Ubuntu) and feel hesitant to install Ubuntu on top of a Win 7 machine to dual boot (might need to use Win7 and Ubuntu at the same time).
Is creating a Virtual PC on Win7, and then install the latest Ubuntu on that Virtual PC one of the better option?
So I think I can create a Virtual PC with an empty virtual hard disk (vhd), say, for 30GB, and then put in the Ubuntu DVD-R or CD-R to install Ubuntu onto that empty hard disk.
Where in BitDefender can one change that instead of automatically deleting infected files (or, to be more precise, the files which it thinks are infected) to ask the user what to do ?
Hello Experts,
if I want to querey the DNS delegation "manually", I normally start using one of the "DNS-Root-Servers", like b.root-servers.net.
dig @b.root-servers.net test.com
But what if the root servers would change? My question is, is there any possibility to query a "central Server" even being "above" the root servers that returns me the list of Root servers?
To create a test email server, I have a similar requirement as:
http://serverfault.com/questions/94640/how-to-redirect-all-outgoing-email-from-postfix-to-a-single-address-for-testing
But I need to send all the emails to an external account, not a local one.
I would like to do something like:
xyz:[email protected]
but xyz is not local nor smtp.
My network engineer states I am part of a cluster where two apache application servers(512G RAM each) have 142 instances each of Tomcat (of which my company represents 6 each with 2G RAM). This seems like a lot and my latency issues move with the hour of the day - 7AM CST software functions fine, 10AM CST - system slows significantly this slowness continues until 6PM CST. My question is how many Tomcat instances can one application server handle?
Is there an easy way to migrate the Hub to a new server. My current one is running out of space. Do I need to redesign the configuration or can I do a migration to the new server.
I got a AT&T compatible Nexus One that I'm trying to connect to my Mac Book Pro (Snow Leopard) for development. When I do an adb devices, it doesn't appear, and I can't do an adb install either. Until today, I've been using a G1 and I haven't had any issues. I haven't placed a SIM in the phone yet, but I don't think that should matter.
The network admin of a wireless network I am trying to access needs to know the hostname of my computer. My "computer" is actually a Google Nexus One - do you know how I can find out the hostname?
