• How to play SWF files without browser

  I like to play some downloaded Shockwave Flash (.SWF) files without opening my internet browser. Sometime ago, I remember I could do it just double clicking on the SWF item. Then it was opening in a plain Shockwave window. Now XP won't play ball. I tried Folder Options > File types but couldn't find the associated player exe. How can I surpass this? Edit: There has to be some way to do this without a 3rd party software since I can already play SWFs on my browsers.

• Vnc viewer authentication failure

  I recently backed up my data and I had moved the vnc viewer executable from my PC to my portable hard disk. Realizing that I no longer had vnc, I got the latest one, but all of a sudden I could not connect to my server anymore and got authentification failure. So I moved the VNC exectuable back from my portable HD to my local HD. And I am still getting Authentification failure errors. I had a certain setup and I don't want to re-create it, do you know how I can recover or what happened to get auth failures all of a sudden ? I checked and the vncserver process is running fine. • Is there an RSM replacement in Windows 7? (to eject USB and Firewire devices from command line)

  I know Windows XP and previous had an rsm.exe file in the <root>\windows\system32 folder that could be used to manage media. I used this command in batch files and from the command line to eject external disks (iPod, CF cardreader, etc.). This utility appears not to be included in Windows 7, and I wonder if there is some replacement utility that will allow the same thing. I've been unable to find any such thing. I'm aware of the 3rd party utilities; this question is only about what is included with Windows 7.

• Windows 8 blue screen error watchdog violation

  My system is windows 8 pro rtm x64. Recently my system started hanging frequently. Nothing but the restart button works. But now just after hanging it showed me a BSOD error saying watchdog violation. I used bluscreen viewer to see the error in the memory dump and it showed me something about hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe. This is what windows showed me. • Why can't I install MySQL on my computer?

  I have read a lot of tutorials, but I am still having problems. What I tried: I downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64. All that I read says that I can run Setup.exe, but there is no such file in the download. The other option I know there is, is including \mysql-5.5.9-winx64\bin in the PATH variable and then trying to execute the mysql command. When I do that, the error I get is: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) I then downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64.msi, which is easier to install, but once I followed the instructions and it was installed, I got the same error executing the mysql command. How can I use MySQL? EDIT: I've now removed everything I installed, and I want to start from scratch.

• Win Server 2008 R2 - Mapped shared folder hanging?

  I have recently built a windows 2008 server R2 machine. This is purely for file server purposes and is very much a basic build. All windows updates installed and part of domain. I have setup a shared folder on the C:Drive and added permissions for domain users as co-owners. The client machines run XP SP3 and are part of the domain also. We have a few servers running the same setups on a few of our sites but this one is particular crashes users machines (explorer.exe hangs for at least a few mins) when attempting to access the shared folder. I have turned off the option on the network card for power save aswell still no change. Any help with this is very much appreciated and i look forward to hearing from you ;)

• Converting Visio (.vsd) files to pdf automatically

  I am trying to create a scheduled task to convert all my .vsd files to pdf so all of our devices can read them (linux, mac, smartphones, etc..) and I would prefer not paying for something that can be done with Visio + PDFcreator. The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog. I'm using this command for replace special characters like $ or * : sed -i "s/\*/123/g;" 1.txt But how command must i use to replace this strings with ciao! in my text files? • In windows 7, how do I disable "Ease of Access" pop ups on the logon screen as I am typing my password?

  So the question is pretty much in the title. Things to note: 'Use On-Screen Keyboard' is un-checked I have disabled Ease of Access by replacing utilman.exe But my problem now is that when I'm typing my password, It'll stop all together on the 'u' or the 'p' character and I have to click on the ease of access button then move focus back to the password to continue. Yes, one obvious solution is to not use a password that has 'u' or 'p' in it (which I've done), but that's obviously not a completely satisfying answer. Thanks! I feel a tumbleweed badge...

• Sunbelt Firewall 4.5 won't block Firefox

  I blocked Firefox with Sunbelt Personal Firewall v.4.5 (formerly Kerio Firewall), by placing red X's on the four in/out points in the configutation. I noticed that the posted text messages on the Nascar Live Racecast on EPSN are still updating. I then blocked svchost.exe (out-Trusted), the only other thing enabled that's relevant, and the messages are still updating. (The only other thing allowed is completely unrelated, it's an independant application doing something else, and I don't want to kill that right now, or do a 'disable all traffic' in Sunbelt until it's done.) Anybody heard of Sunbelt Firewall having such a huge, obvious hole? Is there something else that needs set?

• Altering the Windows 7 grouping thumbnail preview

  I like the windows 7 grouping behaviour for multiple similar windows, except when I have multiple Explorer windows open. In this case, showing thumbnails of each open explorer window is next to useless, and I would like to know how to either: Disable thumbnail display completely (but preserve the grouping behaviour) Disable thumbnail display for a subset of programs (all explorer.exe instances) Change the number of similar programs that are open before the grouping behaviour falls back on a more sensible text preview when hovering over the taskbar icon (currently 14 or over) I don't particularly want to disable any other features of windows to get this behaviour, so disabling the theme compleletely isn't what I want to do. I definitely want to keep the grouping behaviour. Its just those thumbnail previews I would like to alter. • Missing subject field values in user certificate (Windows)

  I am trying to enroll (on behalf of) a user certificate but certain fields appear to be missing in the subject field. Specifically, O and OU. Using ADSI, I see that the fields have the values I want but when I generate the certificate using Enroll on Behalf, certreq.exe, or certmgr.msc (run as different user) O does not appear at all and OU values are the AD containers the user account belongs to. This occurs despite my specifying the values in my .inf for certreq and setting the values in certificate properties when using certmgr.msc. Am I missing something or could I have configured something wrong? I am using an in internal CA.

The file is just one line and the seperator is '<br>' foo<br>bar<br>.....<br> I just want to split the file in parts, where each file has 100 datasets (text plus <br>)( normaly 100 datasets, but at the end maybe less) I already played around with this ... split-file-in-2-with-sed and this split-one-file-into-multiple-files-based-on-pattern sed.exe -e "^.*.<br>{0,100}/g" < original.txt > first_half.txt The split do not work an the result is only 1 file instead of many.

  I have a core Hyper-V Server 2012 that I am remotely managing from a Windows 8 client. I can connect in Hyper-V Manager, Server Manager, and MMC. However, I don't understand how I can manage the physical hard drive (for ex, deleting vhdx files, creating folders, etc) from my Windows 8 client. I tried to attach the remote share as follows: q: \\MyServer\c$ It said command completed successfully, but I don't see the drive on my client's Explorer. • Nvidia 8600 GT drivers Will not run setup

  I am attempting to upgrade my video card drivers with my nvidia 8600 gt. I downloaded the drivers from NVIDIA and when I run the setup, nothing happens. It does appear in the Processes, but never does anything. I've tried restarting, tried killing the process and re-running, I am an admin account... nothing works. What is wrong? [EDIT] The installer does run, it extracts the setup files to C:\NVIDIA as normal then when it tries to run that setup to do the actual install, nothing happens (the process does show up in Task Manager and just sits there). Attempting to run the installer manually via C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\296.10\WinXP\English\Setup.exe has the process open, but nothing happens. This machine is WinXP 32bit.

• IIS wont run a BAT File

  The problem we have run into is as follows. We have an ASP.NET WebService which runs under IIS7. The code in the WebService works 100%, however when the WebService tries to run a .BAT file, nothing happens. Nothing at all, the code doesn't crash, the server doesn't warn us about anything, nothing at all. We have tried setting the User Permissions, we have attempted difference ways of running the BAT, we have tried playing around with the registry, cmd.exe has full rights as well. We are now quite stumped as of what to do, any help would be appreciated.

• How to install Python 2.7 w/ unix libs on cygwin

  I have been trying for about a week to get this to work. Obviously getting Python 2.6 is easy - just install the cygwin package with setup.exe. Installing the windows version of Python2.7 was also easy, but I could not access the Unix Modules. So I've been trying to install Python from source, but it seems every time I fix one make error there is another waiting just behind it. Getting rather fed up with the whole thing & thinking someone else must have either done this or figured out it is impossible. I feel installing Linux would have been the easier route . . .

However, having never done this before I have no idea how to transfer files from my local desktop to the online server. What is the standard convention for transferring files from local machine to the server? As a side note, why can I not download the .NET framework 4 .exe file? • Odd behavior of permissions and icons

  After some virus had infected my Windows 7, I did a complete format and re-installed the OS. I was just installing applications and copying back some data when I noticed some shortcuts changing their icons to something I couldnt recognize (Yellow icons in the image below). Also, a few exe files which previously did not ask for User permission, are now asking for it. Wondering if this is an icon cache problem, I cleared the cache by deleting the IconCache.db in AppData/Local but the problem still persists. Although I did a full system scan with MS Security Essentials, I'm not sure if this is another virus or some other problem. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Edit: Now even Firefox needs permissions to launch. It's icon hasnt changed, but it's got the 'shield' overlay on it like the other yellow icons.

• Default Program With Multiple Versions Installed

  I have multiple versions of Excel installed. Excel 2010, 2007 and 2003. I have them installed on one hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS. When I double-click on an XLS file, Excel 2007 opens. I would like Excel 2010 to open. I read and followed the instructions to go to the Control Panel at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs" and set the default programs. I changed the default to the physical EXE for Excel 2010 at the proper folder that it is installed. When I double-click on the XLS files, Excel 2007 still opens. So I tried to change it to Excel 2003 just to see if it changed to that and it still opens Excel 2007. What am I missing? I would really like the file extension to open Excel 2010, but can not seem to do that.

  I have an IIS 6 server running on Windows 2003 SP2 x86. The server has 4GB of RAM and runs consistently with 2GB allocated. I realise that with x86, the server won't utilize all of the 4GB RAM and the application space is also limited but the IIS processes seem to be limited elsewhere. w3wp.exe never has more than 500MB allocated and I occasionally get OutOfMemory exceptions from a busy .NET application (there are several applications running, each with a separate application pool). What is the maximum memory that an IIS6 web site/app pool can use?

  I have to use the On-Screen Keyboard of Windows 7 for typing: (In case you haven't used it yet, you can get it via: All Programs - Accessories - Ease of Access - On-Screen Keyboard or simply search for "osk.exe") It offers a feature to "hover" about the buttons. Microsoft describes it as the following: In hovering mode, you use a mouse or joystick to point to a key for a predefined period of time, and the selected character is typed automatically. There is my specific problem. The predefined period of time is too long to be useful for me. The minimum amount of time is 0.5 seconds (max. 3 seconds). Is there any way to alter this value to something < 0.5? For example via editing the registry? Edit: The entry *'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk\HoverPeriod'* cannot be set lower than 500 ms. Any helpful tip would be great!

• putty 0.61 : why do I see "Access Denied" message after I enter my login id?

  I use putty to login to my RHEL 5.3 server. I'm prompted to enter my login as "login as " and I enter my login Id. as soon as I press ENTER, I see a "Access Denied" message following which I'm prompted with password. I successfully enter password and I'm through -- no problems. I tried the same with putty 0.60(as opposed to above putty 0.61) but in this version, I don't get any "access denied" error. What should I make of this ? Is putty 0.61 version buggy ? P.S : If I login using ssh.exe(from cygwin), then I'm fine -- I don't get any "access denied" errors. Thank you,

• Domain controller policies having administrative issues with program installations

  I have an issue with our domain and policies where a user needs administrative rights to install a program and someone provides the credentials for the 'run as admin' or 'run as other user' it will always show an error: Cannot find specified file on the drive. So we cannot install programs for our employees. How I fix it is I add the user to administrators, force a policy update, have them reboot, run as administrator and install it that way. Then remove them after and update the policy. Another way was to right click the install file (.exe/.msi) and add the user and administrator as an owner with full control. Only works when we have the installation file. I have no idea how to fix this and I can't find a relevant thread or QA about this problem. I can only find users having issues on their home computers not on a domain. Any help and threads to read would be great!
