• How to recognise vehicle licence / number plate (ANPR) from an image?

  Hi all, I have a web site that allows users to upload images of cars and I would like to put a privacy filter in place to detect registration plates on the vehicle and blur them. The blurring is not a problem but is there a library or component (open source preferred) that will help with finding a licence within a photo? Caveats; I know nothing is perfect and image recognition of this type will provide false positive and negatives. I appreciate that we could ask the user to select the area to blur and we will do this as well, but the question is specifically about finding that data programmatically; so answers such as 'get a person to check every image' is not helpful. This software method is called 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition' in the UK but I cannot see any implementations of it as libraries. Any language is great although .Net is preferred. • How do you detect a website visitor's country (Specifically, US or not)?

  I need to show different links for US and non-US visitors to my site. This is for convenience only, so I am not looking for a super-high degree of accuracy, and security or spoofing are not a concern. I know there are geotargeting services and lists, but this seems like overkill since I only need to determine (roughly) if the person is in the US or not. I was thinking about using JavaScript to get the user's timezone, but this appears to only give the offset, so users in Canada, Mexico, and South America would have the same value as people in the US. Are there any other bits of information available either in JavaScript, or PHP, short of grabbing the IP address and doing a lookup, to determine this?

• What stage of normalization is this? (moving repeating data into separate table)

  Hi There, I have noticed that when designing a database I tend to shift any repeating sets of data into a separate table. For example, say I had a table of people, with each person living in a state. I would then move these repeating states into a separate table and reference them with foreign keys. However, what if I was not storing any more data about states. I would then have a table with StateID and State in. Is this action correct? State is dependant on the primary key of the users table, so does shifting it into its own table help with anything? Thanks,

• jqgrid - edit form field combobox not defaulting to selected row value after first edit

  i am using jqgrid with asp.net-mvc. I have an edit form (using jqmodal) which works great but for some reason one combobox field doesn't default to the current selected row after the first time i bring up the edit form. the weird thing is that i have many other comboboxes which work fine every time and i don't see any real difference. here is an example of the field that doesn't work: { name: "TechOwner", index: "TechOwner", width: 70, editable: true, edittype: "select", editoptions: { dataUrl: "/Person/GetSelectData" }, editrules: { required: true} }, and here is a field that works fine: { name: "FundingType", index: "FundingType", align: "left", width: 25, editable: true, edittype: "select", editoptions: { dataUrl: "/Project/FundingGetSelectData" }, editrules: { required: true} }, the dropdown is getting populated with all options (including the current selected row option) but its just defaulting to the top item) instead of one that matches the current row. is there anything to look out for here that may cause this behavior?

  I'm trying to write 2 classes with members that reference each other. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or it's just not possible. Can anyone help me out here... I'm pretty sure I'm not missing any semicolons or stuff like that. The program works find if I take out one of the members. I tried finding similar questions and the solution was to use pointers, but that's what I'm doing and it does't seem to be working!

• Automated payment notification with php

  I'm about to integrate automated payments into a site. To date, I've successfully used paypal for a number of projects, but these have always been sites which sell physical goods, meaning I can upload the cart contents, user pays, person physically ships goods. This site is a one off payment to enable extra features on a web app. My current thinking is to go down the paypal IPN route to get a notification back and update the users account based on the successful payment. Question is in two parts: 1 - is there a better / simpler way? (any payment processor considered) 2 - does anyone know of a code library or plug in for php which will speed up my integration? • Restarting service from a client computer without rights

  I have already created the program to restart a SQL database but it only works if the client has the rights. This is going to be done on a local network from a client computer when they can't get a person that has the password on the phone. Any thoughts I'm currently using the servicecontroller to start and stop database. When I don't have the rights I get a access denied error, or This operation might require other privileges. Not sure if impersonation would work since I don't have the userid and password.

  Is there any libraries for this? I will put this on a server and it will be a windows service. And Skype will not be installed on server. So Skype API will not mean anything I guess. Edit: I am sorry for not being clear. Here is what i need: I just need a Skype client which will act like a small bot. A person who uses Skype will ask it something like: print totalCreditsLoadedToday And it will answer: 567867867 credits. I need to write a windows service which will accept text messages from Skype and will send responses as text message (a very simple Skype client).   Hi, I've created a custom user model in my application. This user model is working fine, but there are a couple of problems I have with it. 1) The change password link in the my register.html page doesn't work? 2) The default password box on the add/edit page for a user is a little unfriendly. Ideally, what I'd like is the two password fields from the change password form on the add/edit user form in the admin, which will automatically turn convert the entered password into a valid encrypted password in Django. This would make the admin system MUCH friendlier and much more suited to my needs, as a fair number of user accounts will be created and maintained manually in this app, and the person responsible for doing so will likely be scared off at the sight of that admin field, or just type a clear text password and wonder why it doesn't work. Is this possible / How do I do this?

  I asked this last week over the weekend and it got buried in the archives before anyone could answer. So forgive me if you've already seen this. I teach classes and want to be able to select those students who have taken one class, but not another class. I have two tables: lessons_slots which is the table for every class such as: -------------------- -ID name slots- -1 basics 10 - -2 advanced 10 - -3 basics 10 - --------------------- The other table is class_roll, which holds enrollment info, such as: -------------------- -sID classid firstname lastname- -1 1 Jo Schmo -2 1 Person Two ... -13 2 Jo Schmo --------------------- What I want to do, I select everyone who has not had the advanced class (for example). I've tried doing SELECT * FROM lessons_slots LEFT JOIN class_roll ON lessons_slots.ID = class_roll.classid WHERE lessons_slots.name != 'advanced' But that doesn't work...All it does is eliminate that row, without eliminating the user. I want Jo Schmo, for example, to not show up in the results. Any ideas?

Ex: People older than 26 Name Properties Jane Smart, Funny, Good-looking Joe Smart, Workaholic It's also acceptable to return one of the properties and total property count. The query should be efficient: there are millions of rows in people table, hundreds of thousands of rows in properties table (so most people have no properties). There are hundreds of rows selected at a time. Is there any way to do it?

• Serial.begin(speed, config) not compiling for Leonardo Board

  I would like to configure my serial communication to have no parity, 1 start- and 2 stop-bits. The documentation for Serial.begin(speed, config) states: (...) An optional second argument configures the data, parity, and stop bits. The default is 8 data bits, no parity, one stop bit. The documentation also lists the possible configuration-values. According to my (limited) understanding, I need SERIAL_7N2 or SERIAL_8N2 to meet my requirements. (I'm not sure how the data-bits relate to the the 1-start-bit that I need.) However, I can't even compile because I have no idea how to supply that config value to the begin method. (I don't have much Arduino/C++ experience) I've tried in my code the following two variants: Serial.begin(9600, SERIAL_8N2); Serial.begin(9600, "SERIAL_8N2"); Am I missing something? Additional Information: Serial.begin(speed, config) has been introduced with the latest Arduino 1.0.2 IDE version. The code defining/implementing the begin methods can be found here. HardwareSerial.h HardwareSerial.cpp Edit: According to the replies from PeterJ and borges, the following variant is correct. Serial.begin(9600, SERIAL_8N2); However, it's still not working. I found that the compile error doesn't occur if I change the configured board from my Arduino Leonardo to Arduino uno. Therefore, it could be a bug occurring only with a subset of boards ... or maybe it's not supported?!

• COM-Objects containing maps / content error(0)

  I'm writing a small wrapper to get familiar with some important topics in C++ (WinAPI, COM, STL,OOP). For now, my class shall be able to create a (child) window. Mainly, this window is connected to a global message loop that distribute messages to a local loop of the right instance (global is static, local is virtual). Obviously, there are surely better ways to do that but I'm using std::maps to store HWND and their instance pointer in pairs (the Global loop looks for the pointer with the HWND-parameter, gets itself the pointer from the map and calls then the local loop). Now, it appears that the map does not accept any values because of a unknown reason. It seems to allocate enough space but something went wrong anyway [ (error) 0 is displayed instead of the entries in visual C++). I've looked that up in google as well and found out that maps cause some trouble when used in classes AND DLLs. May this be the reason and is there any solution?? • How do I limit the permissions of a C# program to read only on an SQLServer Database?

  Hi Guys, I have written some C# which connects to a live production database. I want to give my application read only access to the DB but am unsure how to achieve this. Is there any trivial way to get this done by amending the connection string? My understanding is that the application will logon with the credentials of the person running the application and hence may or may not have write access to the db based on that fact. Can I statically limit the permissions of the application so that if someone changes the program to do something devastating at a later date any manipulation will fail? Apologies for how trivial the question may be but it's my first venture into the world of MS programming. Thanks, Gav

• Access reading error when using class member variable

  Hi, I have a class with private member variables declared in a header file. In my constructor, I pass in some filenames and create other objects using those names. This works fine. When I try to add another member variable, however, and initialize it in the constructor, I get an access reading violation. I sent the code to someone else and it works fine on his computer. Any idea what could be wrong?   Hello all Some time ago I read a posting on a board where the person was talking poorly about people that have HTML embedded/within their PHP. I do quite a bit of PHP development but I still interleave HTML and PHP in the same document. Is there a better way to do this, am I doing it wrong? I know that in JSP/JSF they use an XML document with namespaces to insert their HTML code so I was wondering if there was a similar function that PHP uses that I should be taking advantage of.   This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.

  I'm buying a Server from a person (that I don't know really well) and I want to make sure that the previous owner hasn't got any access anymore. It's an Ubuntu Virtual Server and I already received the admin access (via shell). How can I find out if there are still other accounts left, who are still able to access my server (e.g. with a still existing shell account, ftp or another type of user account)? • Stop default hashtag behavior with jquery

  I'm using the following code to append a hashtag to the end of a url. That way someone can copy that url and take them back to that page, with certain divs visable. $("a.live").click(function() { window.location.hash = 'live'; $("#live).slideDown(); }); In this example I have a div called 'live', that would slideDown when a link is clicked, and '#live' added to the url. Then I have code that checks the hash tags when the page is loaded to show the proper divs. My problem is, how do I prevent the browser from jumping to the 'live' div once it's called? I don't want the page to scroll down to the div, just want it opened and the hashtag appended so a person could copy it and come back to that page with that div showing. Any tips? Thank you!

• subscript for a join (\bowtie) operation in LyX/LaTeX

  I'm using LyX to write some Relational Algebra queries. I'm using the \bowtie symbol for the join operation but when I try to put a text in subscript directly under the symbol, I get the following error: ...a_{\t{pId}}\t{person}\right)\bowtie\limits {\t{pId}{1}=\t{pId}_{2}... I'm ignoring this misplaced \limits or \nolimits command. Anyone knows how to do what I want? Preferably in LyX, but ERT code snippets will also be appreciated. Thanks!
