• Options for a site-specific-browser app

  I would like to have our intranet site accessed through Firefox or Chrome, rather than IE. However we don't want users having access to any other internet sites apart from our intranet, unless they are using IE. I notice that Chrome has what they called 'Hosted Apps' and there is a Firefox spinoff called Prism. Does anyone know whether either of these are suitable? Can you install a Chrome hosted app without giving the user access to other sites through Google Chrome? What about Prism? Are these products stable?

• Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU?

  I am virtualization newbie. Please advise on these questions. Please note using a commercial VM software like Citrix or VMware is not a choice for me. I have at my disposal a couple of 2x 4 core servers with 32 GB RAM. I need to create 16 VMs on each server to test some web applications. Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU for each VM? To my best knowledge I can't do so on Xen. Is it possible on KVM or some other free open source VM solution? If it's not possible to assign half a core, how do I ensure that uniform processing power is available for all VMs? Since the job is to create separate instances for hosting 16 web apps in a physical server, do you recommend setting up a private cloud using Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud as a better option? Is there HA solution under KVM, like Remus for Xen?

• Handling Junk Email with Apple Mail.app and Gmail

  I've just setup my Apple Mail client to work with Google Apps through IMAP. One lingering question is how to best handle SPAM (Junk Mail), however. In their Help section, Google recommends that we disable junk filtering on the client. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892 This leads me to wonder what we should do when a junk message makes it past Google's filter? Do I just delete the message? If I do, the Google spam filter will never improve and "learn" that the message was junk. Do I have to log in to the web interface at Google to mark the message as spam? That seems a bit arduous for every spam email I get. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks!

I don't want the users to download files with bittorrent (mainly used) and other p2p apps. I've also found some solutions about lowering p2p traffic priority using QoS. I really need to BAN p2p traffic. Does anyone know how to setup some rules to deny that kind of traffic ? I've tried to setup an Access Restriction Rule: But it's not working at all ...

• Issue with Ivan Heckman's allSnap

  For the longest time I have used Ivan Heckman's allSnap program to better manage Windows on my pc by making them easily snap together, instead of overlapping. However on Windows 8 I cannot seem to get this to work. I suspect it has something to do with how Win8 boarders seem to have a transparent pixel around the outside of the window padding boarder, but overall I would love to get the snapping functionality back if it is at all possible. It's very hard trying to find information about this online as all I find are posts talking about snapping Metro apps to the side of the screen in Desktop Mode.

• What would happen in a Software Raid 1 of one HDD and one SSD?

  Hi, I'm running my Windows 7 installation and all of my apps from an SSD for performance reasons. Since SSD's can instantly die at any moment, I'm looking for some kind of data backup strategy. Right Now I regularly backing up the drive image on a hard disk, but that only happens once per day, which is not enough for my taste. So I got an idea: What if I created a software raid 1 of the SSD and partition on my Hard disk? All data would be mirrored on both drives, making this a lot safer. But what about performance? Will Windows 7 detect that the SSD is faster than the hard drive and always read from the SSD? Or will it randomly read from both, thus reducing read performance? • Set mouse or keyboard button to simulate left click and hold or rapid left click repeating in Windows?

  Does anyone know a way to configure Windows 7 or use third party software to do this? I would like to click my middle mouse button and have it tell Windows to left click and hold until I click the middle mouse button again. A keyboard key would be fine as well. Some games and apps have me holding down the left mouse button for a long time and I would like to reduce the stress on my mouse hand. Also, I would like to do a similar thing but have it repeatedly click the left mouse button automatically if possible. If none of that is possible, how about temporalily setting a keyboard key to achieve a left mouse button emulation?

• How to set up different documentroot for ip based requests, and different for domain based requests

  My problem is simply that I have a domain, let's say example.com, and my server's ip address is e.g. 192.168.0.1. I want to set up 2 different virtual hosts, so when user enters ip address (192.168.0.1) in his browser, he will see content from here: /var/www/staging But if user will type example.com, he will see content from here: /var/www I think it's possible but I was playing around with it and couldn't make it work. Also I don't want to make simple redirection. I know I can, but I need both of my apps (live & staging) working in root on the same server. I can't buy second domain, and I can't associate new ip address.

  Not sure if this belongs here or on SuperUser, feel free to move as appropriate. I've noticed the performance on my RAID0 setup seems to have degraded over the past months. The throughput is fine, but I think the random access time has increased or something. In use I generally see about 1-5mb/sec when loading stuff in Visual Studio and other apps and it doesn't seem like the CPU is bottlenecking as the CPU utilization is pretty low. I don't recall what Access Time used to be, but HD Tune is reporting 12.6ms Read throughput is showing as averaging about 125MB/sec so it should be great for sequential reads. Defrag daily and it shows fragmentation levels low, so that shouldn't be an issue. Additional info, Windows 7 x64, Intel raid controller on mobo, WD Black 500GB (I think 32mb cache) x2.

• I can't externally access my home server's wordpress website

  Basically, I can access everything just fine using 127.0.0.1, but if I use my external IP (123.123.123.123), I get page not found. My router is port forwarding HTTP port 80 to port 8080 on my servers internal IP address. In other words: (Application: HTTP | Start: 80 | End: 8080 | Protocol: Both | IP Address 192.168.0.101 | Enable [YES]) I know it's forwarding properly, because when I stop port forwarding, I can access my router page by using my external IP. • Proxification rulte for System process

  I'm trying to configure Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 remote debugging and ran into issue: while connecting to remote computer running MSVSMON, client computer sends SYN request for connection. It makes it under the System process (as I see it in TCPView). As every network apps should be configured to use proxy in our network, I'm trying to add devenv.exe to proxification rules to make its traffic goes thru LAN's proxy server. It doesn't help. So my question is how can I make that low-level-system traffic will go through local area network proxy server?

• Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

  I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory.   Hi. I got a windows server 2008 where I host a site, now I decided to have the email on google apps. I did add the MX records I get from them to my DNS settings on the server but with no luck. I recently started doing server stuff so I did like this. Server Manager / Roles / DNS Server / DNS / SERVERNAME / MYDOMAIN / Forward Lookup / New MX Host or child domain: What goes here? FQDN: here is my domain name, i think because I named the ns my domain? FQDN MX: here is the google MX record I got from them MSP: 10 I have no Idea where I go wrong but I thought I would ask you guys if any of you can maybe give me some tips on what to look for or any newbee mistake I do that you see from this little info. I really appreciate all help I could get on this.

In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http://server:8085 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache http://server:90 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM http://server:8081 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http://apache.server or http://apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http://fdm.server or http://fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http://jdownloader.server or http://jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how? Even if it's possible only for Internet, I would like to know how to do it, if there's a way.

• Use trackball to scroll, zoom, etc

  I've got a Logitech Marble Trackball (which is great, btw). By setting one of the extra buttons as a "middle" mouse button, when I click it, many apps (like browsers) will start "scrolling mode" so that moving the trackball will scroll up and down. Most of the time, this is sufficient, but I figure it would be way cooler if I could have several "modes" to do different things like zooming, panning, rotating (particularly in GIMP). Then when I hold CTRL, CTRL+SHIFT, or some such, it would enter a new mode, and the trackball would behave differently. I found a couple questions similar to this that suggest using AutoHotKey, but I haven't found an example script to do this, nor can I find out to track mouse movements within AHK. Any pointers? hotkey for scrollwheel remedy for a no scroll wheel trackball? Thanks!

  Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 that I use to host various ASP.NET applications under IIS7. I would also like to run various PHP based web apps using Apache (or Apache 2). The server has three static IP addresses assigned to it and I would like to bind one of the IP addresses to Apache while using the other two IP addresses for IIS. I can use the IIS Manager to bind the specific IP addresses to IIS, but I am unaware of how to do this with Apache. Can anyone tell me how to go about binding Apache to a specific IP address and port (port 80 is what I want to use). Please note .. I am aware that PHP can run under IIS. In fact that is how I have been running my PHP web applications. However, there are so many inconsistencies and pitfalls with PHP running under IIS that I just prefer to use Apache.

  Hello, There are two different web-apps running on two (physically) different servers on our network... one of IIS and another one on Apache - both on port 80 since two machines are accessible by different IPs on our internal network. Now I want to expose both these services to the world. My idea is to somehow make the incoming connection redirect to the appropriate server based on user's choice of subdomain. Example xxx.domain.com maps to the IIS (Internal IP: 1.2.3.4) yyy.domain.com maps to Apache (Internal IP: 5.6.7.8) To the world, both these servers will share the same public IP. • Volume key occassionally changes relative volume in mixer

  I find this a bit of a nuisance but I usually use the "volume up/down" key on my Microsoft ergo 4000 to change the volume of my system. The problem I'm experiencing is every so often, the volume of Winamp goes way down relative to the other apps in the mixer: So I don't always notice this right away, suddenly I can't hear Brandy warbling. And that makes me sad. Or mad. Or both. But it's a nuisance - is there a special key combination I need to avoid pressing to stop the mixer from imbalancing? Is there a way to disable this "app specific" mixer, because it is completely useless to me.

• Keep only "lock" a single app open in iOS?

  Is there anyway to "lock" open a single app in iOS? My use case for this is simple. There are many apps and games designed for children. While these applications are appropriate for children, many other applications installed on an iPad are not. But even more so than protecting them from inappropriate content, I would just like to prevent them from leaving the application. They accidentally hit the home button or multi-touch gesture out of the application. I know you can turn gestures off. Developers also have links to their website or other related applications. Kids are constantly exiting the application and then bringing the device to me asking "Can you get me back into the game?" every couple minutes. How can I hand a child an iPad with "Angry Birds" running and make sure only "Angry Birds" runs? Cydia or jailbreak tweaks welcome. Thanks.

• Proper network configuration for a KVM guest to be on the same networks at the host

  I am running a Debian Linux server on Lenny. Within it, I am running another Lenny instance using KVM. Both servers are externally available, with public IPs, as well as a second interface with private IPs for the LAN. Everything works fine, except the VM sees all network traffic as originating from the host server. I suspect this might have something to do with the iptables-based firewall I'm running on the host. What I'd like to figure out is: how to I properly configure the host's networking such that all of these requirements are met? Both host and VMs have 2 network interfaces (public and private). Both host and VMs can be independently firewalled. Ideally, VM traffic does not have to traverse the host firewall. VMs see real remote IP addresses, not the host's.   I'm just starting to use Windows 7 and I want to know how to make my Outlook reminders pop up and show themselves. They keep opening discretely, quietly as just another Outlook entry on the taskbar. And I keep overlooking them, because they pop up behind everything else. How do I make them less easy to overlook? (Yeah, usually you don't want obnoxious apps that push themselves to the forefront. But there are a few places where I do want that, and Outlook calendar reminders are one of them.)
