• Will ExtJS die?

  I look at ExtJS, and it appears to provide many of the RIA features that more bulky suites such as Flex provide, without the flash requirement. However, as Open-source initiatiatives such as jQuery-UI continue, will ExtJS simply die at some point? Furthermore, since flash penetration only continues to increase, why put stock in a javascript library? That said, JavaScript libraries such as jQuery have made gigantic leaps in providing easy-to-use APIs with great functionality, so maybe there's some merit in that. Thoughts? Opinions? ExtJS has a price tag, so I have to ask this question.

• Script or utility to export from ScrewTurn Wiki into Confluence?

  Has anyone tried migrating from ScrewTurn to Confluence? I'm hoping that I can export the ScrewTurn database to xml and then use a utility to put it in a format that Confluence can understand - perhaps the format used by the Universal Wiki Converter. Has anyone used such a utility? Is there anything I should know before I try to write one myself? Update: I've installed the Confluence trial and I took a look at the backup. There's an entities.xml file that looks like the data store. The root tag is <hibernate-generic>, which leads me to believe that they use Hibernate. I'm not familiar with Hibernate, but this should be useful.

• Regex to detect a proper permalink?

  These permalinks above are rerouted to my page: page.php?permalink=events/foo page.php?permalink=events/foo/ page.php?permalink=ru/events/foo page.php?permalink=ru/events/foo/ The events is dynamic, it could be specials or packages. My dilemma is basically; I need to detect an empty link in order so I can feed a robots no index meta tag in the case of: page.php?permalink=events page.php?permalink=events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events I can't use a simple pattern such as [a-zA-Z]+\/?(.+)/ since it won't work on the i18n permalinks. What regex could I use which would detect this, using $_GET['permalink'] as the reference to the permalinks? And avoid false positives? Update: Empty link means there's no fragment after the "events/" part. These are empty: page.php?permalink=events page.php?permalink=events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events

• differences between using wmode="transparent", "opaque", "window" for an embedded object on webpage

  when embedding a Flash object with the <object and <embed tag, there is an attribute called "wmode". It seems that most of the time, wmode="transparent" is the same as wmode="opaque" as the Flash doesn't actually have any transparent color so that the bottom HTML element is to be shown. As a result, "opaque" should be faster than "transparent" since it require less processing for transparency, yet most of the time i see Flash object embedded with "transparent" instead of "opaque". "opaque" is needed so that other HTML element won't be covered up by the Flash object. (such as a menu item that pops up an extra sub-menu won't be covered up by the Flash object). By the way, is there formal documentation for wmode's "opaque", "transparent", and "window"? I was only able to find blogs that describe it but not the formal documentation. thanks.

• Using Jquery to load Facebook fb:profile-pic - not working in IE

I followed the tips given on Loading Facebook fb:profile via ajax In my app, I am basically loading more comments posted by the user via Jquery and along with each comment showing the user's picture using the fb:profile-pic tag This is a sample of how I'm building the string via Jquery newcomment += "<fb:profile-pic uid='"+data.fb_userid+"' height='50' width='50' /"; newcomment += ""+data.user_name+": "; newcomment += ""+data.user_comment+": "; $("#morecomments").append(newcomment); So the profile-pic was not being displayed - After reading the above link, I added if ( FB.XFBML.Host.parseDomTree ) setTimeout( FB.XFBML.Host.parseDomTree, 0 ); The weird thing now is - its working in Chrome and Firefox but not in IE Cant figure out why. • Can I embed an icon to a .hta file?

  I have written an HTML Application (hta file) and am wondering if there is a way to embed an icon file into the hta file itself. I have seen html emails that include embedded graphic files, is there any way to do this with html applications and icons? HTA files have an HTA:APPLICATION tag that allows you to specify an icon, but I want to have only a single file for download. I don't want to have an external icon file. Is this possible? • How can I retain carriage returns when I'm encrypting data?

  I have this following setup, a textarea named with some data in it that may have carriage returns and another textarea that has style='display:none' in order to make it hidden as follows: <textarea id="myTextarea" onBlur="encryptMyData()"></textarea> <textarea name="encryptedText" style='display:none'></textarea> the user enters data in the first textarea and when that text area loses focus the 'encryptMyData()' javascript function is calling an ajax call to take whatever the user entered in the first textfield, encrypt it using rijndael, and paste it in the encryptedText textarea so that it is stored in the database later. Now what I need to do is this, find a way to convert the carriage returns before encryption to a tag like so [cr] so that when I retrieve the data, all formatting is retained. Any idea how I do this? I'm using asp.net and c# to perform the encryption.

• How to check if an apply-template filled variable is a string or (possibly) empty node in XSLT?

  I need a test which would evaluate to true in two cases: There is a string inside which contains any non white space characters There is any node (which can be possibly empty) on a variable that is filled with apply-template call result. I tried test="normalize-space($var)" but this doesn't cover the empty tag possibility. I also tried simply this: test="$var" but this evaluate to true even for white space only strings. By the way "$var/*" produces an error "Expression ...something I don't remember... node-set" which is I think because of apply-template variable instantiation. Is there any (which means even multi level decision) solution for this? EDIT: I forgot to say that it's for XSLT 1.0 and preferably without any exslt extensions or similar.

• SVN best practice - checking out root folder

  Hi all, quick question about svn checkout best practice. Once the structure of a repository is set up, ie trunk, branches, tags, is it normal to have the root checked out to our local machines. Or should you only check out the trunk if that's what you are working on or a branch if we so choose to create one. The reason i ask is that every time someone creates a branch or tag we all get a copy when we do an update. btw, we're recently migrated from vss.

  I am completely new to programming and starting my education with visual basic 9 and SQL. I have read Visual Basic, in easy steps, 2nd edition by Mike Mcgrath. Although it was very easy to understand, it only gave me an introduction to learning VB. I'm looking for something more in depth, albeit for a beginner. I've read through the questions with a VB and book tag. Unfortunately, most of what I've found here references VB 6 and VB 8. Any recommendations? I cannot afford to create a library or college at the moment. So, I need to make sure that what I do buy counts. Thanks for any suggestions!

• jquery issue, disable on mouseenter queue

  When you mouseenter .li_group class it does a slide down effect on 1 single <li> tag, everything goes smoothly, but during the delay if you take your mouse off and on .li_group it "queues" the effect and slides the li down, delay, slides it down again etc etc...   Most of us computer programmers are pretty obsessed about correct terminology. I certainly am, especially because sometimes changing just one character in a word can drastically change its meaning. So... what is the correct shorthand for "regular expression"? Is it "regex" or "regexp"? On the internet I see both uses, although "regex" seems to be more popular, and the tag list here on SO also includes just "regex". But plenty of people also use "regexp" in their questions.

• Http 404: Not Found (WebException)

  Hi, I am using a console app/class library to invoke a asp.net web service. The class library queries the database and sends the data to the web service. What I notice is that when the amount of data is huge (with 20 columns and 18K records), i get a HTTP 404: Not Found exception from the web service. I have tried increasing the maxReqeustLength and executionTimeout properties in the httpRuntime tag in the web.config of the web service. Is there any thing that I can do to overcome this? There are to be a series of elements to this form that require various styles applied to them. Ideally I'd like the VS 2005/2008 properties interface to be able to apply the CSSClass as it does at the control level, i.e. with a dropdown list of available CSS Clases.   So, how do we write a class over several files in action script 3? In C# there's the "partial" keyword. In C++ it's natural (you just "#include ..." all files). In Flex 3, in a component, you add this tag: <mx:Script source="myfile.as"/>. How do I split the following class into several files; package package_path { public class cSplitMeClass { public function cSplitMeClass() { } public function doX():void { // .... } public function doY():void { // .... } } } For example I want to have the doX() and doY() functions implemented in another ".as" file. Can I do this? And please, don't tell me something like "a good practice is to have them in one file" :)

• Linking to non-home panel in JQTouch site

  I'm trying to create a link from an external site that arrives at a particular, internal panel on a JQTouch site I'm building. However the browser always opens the home panel of the JQT site no matter what anchor tag I use in the link. e.g. If I try to link to the User Interface panel in the official JQTouch demo I use http://www.jqtouch.com/preview/demos/main/#ui but the home panel shows in the browser and not the sub-panel I requested. Any suggestions would be very welcome. I have control of the both the linked and linking sites so can tweak code is necessary. Thanks

Can anyone suggest how I do this? Or do I need to specify the types I want to allow somewhere and switch on the property's type to see if it's allowed? That's a little messy, so it'd be nice if I there was a tidier way.
