• Why is apt-get --auto-remove not removing all dependencies?

  I just installed a package (dansguardian in this case) and apt told me that I had unmet dependencies. # sudo apt-get install dansguardian Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam libclamav6 libtommath0 Suggested packages: clamav-docs squid libclamunrar6 The following NEW packages will be installed: clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam dansguardian libclamav6 libtommath0 0 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/4,956 kB of archives. After this operation, 14.4 MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? So I installed it and the dependencies. So far so good. Later on, I decide that this package just isn't the package for me, so I want to remove it and all of the other junk it installed with it since I'm not going to be needing any of it: # sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove --purge dansguardian Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: dansguardian 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. After this operation, 1,816 kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? However it is only removing that one specific package. What about clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam libclamav6 libtommath0? Not only did it not remove them, but clamav was actually running a daemon that loads every time the computer boots. I thought that --auto-remove would remove not only the packages, but also the dependencies that were installed with it. So basically, without going through the apt history log file (if I even remember to do so, or if I even remember that a specific package I installed 3 months ago had dependencies along with it), is there a way to remove a package and all of the other dependencies that were installed like in this case?

• What parameters to mdadm, to re-create md device with payload starting at 0x22000 position on backing storage?

  I try to recover from mdadm raid disaster, which happened when moving from ubuntu server 10.04 to 12.04. I know the correct order of devices from dmesg log, but given this information, I still cannot access the data. The superblocks look messy; the mdadm --examine for each disk is on this question on askubuntu By inspecting the raw contents of backing storage, I found the beginning of my data (the LUKS container in my case) at position 0x22000 relative to the beginning of the first partition in the raid. Question: What is the combination of options issued to "mdadm --create" to re-create mdadm that starts with the given offset? Bitmap size? PS. The relevant information from syslog when the system was healthy are pasted here.

• Freebsd 7.2: View firmware version for disks?

  I'm running FreeBSD 7.2, with Seagate Cheetah (Model ST####) drives. We are having some problems with the SCSI drives on these machines. Our vendor says that updating the firmware on the drives may fix the problems, and a firmware update did seem to fix some SCSI problems on another FreeBSD host. How can I view the firmware version of these drives? I tried some tips from nixCraft, but nothing has worked so far. In dmesg, I see the Make and Model, but In Linux, this information is often in /var/log/dmesg (Although /var/log/dmesg is sometimes out of date), or I often find this information with something like sudo lshw -class disk, lshal or dmidecode.

Whats the point in this question? The idea while not perfect is catch the most commonly asked questions regarding redirects using the htaccess on the Apache platform either on some type of lamp or a live server. The type of answers should be generally those that you could imagine are used by 100,000’s of sites world-wide and are constantly asked here at Pro Webmasters repeatedly over and over in various forms. • What exactly do I have to pay attention for when choosing Windows Hosting Provider?

  This is my first time choosing a hosting company. It is for a web site made in asp.net mvc3. So I was thinking choosing a provider would be easy since I found this page http://www.microsoft.com/web/Hosting/Home which contains hosting offers. Now hours later, I am still searching. The reason is that as soon as I start investigating about particular company, something stands out that I do not like. Here are some examples what I noticed when checking various companies in more detail: Company "about us" page is lacking in information about their company. Few of them had just general description what they do and nothing else, while some others had information like company name but had no address. Checking company name in Business Registry Searches gave no results. Two of the companies I checked had both company name and address but I was unable to find them in the registry. Putting company domain into Google gave mostly results from that domain or web hosting review sites but not much else. I am assuming that good companies should have search results from other sites too. Low Alexa Traffic Rank. There was one company which had a site that looked very professional but their alexa traffic ranking was like 2 million. Are there any other factors I should pay attention to when choosing a hosting company? Do I have legitimate concerns or am I just too paranoid?

• Coldfusion server VERY slow page loads

  I inherited a windows server 2003 coldfusion 7 server a few weeks ago. Today a network cable was unplugged by accident from the server. On plugging it back in, pages were NOT loading at all. Rather, we were receiving a generic coldfusion error page. After restarting IIS several times and coldfusion even more than that, we finally got pages to start loading. However, the loading is extremely slow (30+ seconds) on pages that used to load instantly. Loading through the local network (IE localhost/cfide/administrator) does nothing to help the load speed. I am not familiar with IIS or Coldfusion (We're in the process of migrating this to Linux/PHP), so this is all new territory to me. I'm hoping someone may have experienced this issue in the past and can help me solve it. I'm happy to provide any additional information that might be necessary....I'm just not sure what information you might need in order to help. Thanks for your time.

  I am really new to the whole concept of Data storage, Domain, Server and everything else related to this. Can someone pleases explain what a Domain is? How are server part of the Domain and How are Database stored in the Server or Domain? How does a new server be able to connect to existing database server to get all the data needed. I tried to find this information in the web but I am not really finding a good resource. It may be because these is really basic information. I will really appreciate if someone can explain these concept in plain terms. Thanks in advance.

  The recent Java Mac OS X 2012-006 update from Apple removes the Apple Java 6 plug-in from your Mac. The Mac OS X Install FAQ will be updated with the next 7u release, but you may find the following information useful in the meantime. Q: I have installed Java for OS X 2012-006 and Apple Java 6 can no longer be used for applets or Web Start. How do I get it back? A: The Java for OS X 2012-006 update from Apple uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. You can download the latest version of Java from Oracle, which has improved security, reliability and compatibility. If you prefer to continue using Apple's Java 6 plug-in, you can follow the steps provided in How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 applet plug-in and Web Start functionality. Q: After installing Java for OS X 2012-006, can I continue to use Apple's Java 6 alongside the OS X JDK or JRE for Java 7? A: If you want to continue to develop with Java 6 in a Terminal window you can modify the startup script for your favorite command environment. For bash, use this: export JAVA_HOME=`/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.6` Some applications use /usr/bin/java to invoke Java. After installing Java for OS X 2012-006, /usr/bin/java will find the newest JDK installed, and will use that for all of the Java related command line tools in /usr/bin. You may need to modify those applications to find Java 6, or contact the developer for a newer version of the application. • Populating cells with data from another spreadsheet after just keying in a few letters

  I have 1 workbook with 2 spreadsheets. Spreadsheet 2 column A contains a long list of company names, Columns B - H contain critical information about the company. Spreadsheet 1 contains all of the columns as Spreadsheet 2 plus some other columns. What I'm trying to achieve is that when you start to type in the first 3 characters of a company name on Spreadsheet 1 it would then have a drop down of the companies (as listed on Spreadsheet 2) that share the first 3-5 letters and you would select one. Upon selecting a company name all of the corresponding company information would populate in the other columns on spreadsheet 1 automatically. This is to avoid copying a row from Spreadsheet 2 and pasting it in Spreadsheet 1. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

  I have an sql server 2008 installed. there are about 6 databases created and running on this server I often get message like "SA account is locked out" is there any specific reasons for this account being locked out? is there any other place I need to check the reasons ( I checked the eventviwer but could not get much information) Edit: i found this information in teh eventviewer backups. Is this the cause? SQL Server failed to communicate with filter daemon launch service (Windows error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. ). Full-Text filter daemon process failed to start. Full-text search functionality will not be available.

• How can I keep websites from knowing where I live?

  This questions is related to issues and practicality, not security. I live in Brazil and, apparently, every single website I visit knows about it. Usually that's ok, but there are quite a few sites that don't make use of that information adequately. For instance: Bing keeps thinking that brazilian pages are way more relevant to me than american ones (which they're not). Google.com always redirects me to google.com.br. Microsoft automatically sends me to horribly translated support pages in portuguese (which would just be easier to read in english). These are just a few examples. Usually it's stuff I can live with (or work around), but some of them are just plain irritating. I have geolocation disabled in firefox, so I guess they're either getting this information from my IP or from windows itself (which I bought here). Is there a way to avoid this? Either tell them nothing or make them think I live somewhere else? Thanks

  When I am looking at the security tab of my event viewer on a Windows Server 2008 R2, I am showing a ton of Audit Failures with Event ID 4776. The computer attempted to validate the credentials for an account. Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon Account: randy Source Workstation: HPDB1 Error Code: 0xc0000064 I verified the account "randy" exist in my Active Directory. From my understanding, there has not been any recent password changes. Is there any way to get detailed information on this error? I am wondering what program is requesting this information. Also, is there any way to clear this error up? I was thinking about resetting the password and changing it back to the original.

• How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance. Edit: Thanks for the information.   Hi, Next year I will be doing a final year project at Uni. I've already thought of one and was wondering what you guys think of it. I want to create a University Information Search for prospective students who are trying to look for an affordable University to attend. It will depend on the student's family income and the grades they get. They enter in those two parameters (and some more) and it comes up with a list of suitable Unis based on their criteria. This is not about the price of tution fee. It's mostly to do with the cost of living. Stuff like: Rent (if living in a private flat). Student Accomadation. Cost of traveling to your home and back (for holidays). ...and some other stuff stuff I haven't thought about yet. It'll mostly be GUI driven with some textual information. I'm also thinking of using it as a website interface. What do you guys think? Can I program something like this Java? If there's any holes you see in my idea please tell me.

• How do I force apt-get to install a package that will not install due to a bug introduced by Ubuntu 11.10?

  Ubuntu 11.10 separated out python-profiler from the Python standard library due to licensing philosophies. (According to what I could Google, correct me if I'm wrong.) This is an active bug since October for 11.10. I have Python 2.7.2 installed, so the dependency errors are wrong. 'apt-get check' does not resolve the problem. I don't get it. Ubuntu is a popular distro, wine is very common thing for people to want to run. Using 64bit system is what everyone should be doing (I don't even get why are there 32 bit version of ubuntu). Here is how the dependencies looks like: wine - wine1.4 wine1.4 - wine1.4-amd64 wine1.4-amd64 - wine1.4-common wine1.4-common - wine1.4 I see a problem here.... :( Please help me.
