  • "Try Ubuntu without installing" results in graphical artifacts on MacBook

    - by ubuntukeks
I am trying to bless my MacBookPro 5,3 (Unibody/Core2Duo/Nvidia 9400M+Nvidia 9600M GT) with Ubuntu 12.04 (already got rEFIt running), but every time I select Try Ubuntu without installing, it will lock up and always give me the same coloured graphical artifacts all over the screen. Whether I use a CD-ROM or a USB Stick, it does not change a thing. Is there anything else that can be done or am I stuck for now?

  • Do you prefer building your interfaces in IB or programmatically? and why?

    - by LolaRun
I've been using Xcode and building iPhone apps for two months, but I'm finding it really hard to grasp good application design. I always face problems—like you can't put your tabbarcontroller in another custom viewcontroller, for example—that 'sometimes', of course, would work if you did the creation of the views/viewcontrollers programmatically. So I don't know if I should start writing the creation of my objects or use Interface Builder. What are your experiences?

  • Determine Better Coding Practice

    - by footprint.
As a new programmer, it has always been hard to create applications, because I am still at the learning stage. I understand that to achieve a particular affect or function in an application, there will be numerous ways to achieve the same result. However, should I just purely create a function to it's working state, which means that as long as it works, just as the way I want it to, then it should be fine. Can any fellow programmers of a higher level kindly let me know the right way of doing things?

  • How hard is to be the anonymous owner of a website?

    - by silla
I'd like to create a website with a very radical political message. It won't be unethical (encouraging violence, etc) but I feel the points I plan to list in it will definitely make me a lot of enemies. How hard would it be to protect my identity from anyone finding out who I am? I know domains always have a $10/year option for privatizing your registration information but is there any other protection I should think about having? Thanks!

  • Which areas( I.T.) are mostly affected by Outsourcing?

    - by Herbut
My parents complain about me choosing a career in IT instead of business since most companies outsource IT nowadays. I always thought IT/Desktop supports are the ones who got outsourced, but it seems programmers are being outsourced to India as well. I need to choose the most secure area (less affected by outsourcing) in order to convince my parents. Which areas in IT are mostly affected by outsourcing?

  • How to make Unity remember brightness settings?

    - by Teresa H
This question has been asked many times for Ubuntu 11.10 but it always has been closed and linked with this link, but that accepted answer is from 2010 and that setting doesn't work anymore for Ubuntu 11.10. Furthermore, the brightness setting doesn't exist anymore in "Energy" options. It is now on "Screen" options and it doesn't seem to remember the setting after reboot. So, how to make Unity remember brightness settings?

  • Declaring variables in SQL

    - by Tim Hibbard
I would like to blog more about the problems I encounter on a daily basis.  I find that taking 10 minutes or so to write a simple solution to my problems helps me retain that information. I always forget the specific syntax to declaring variables in T-SQL.  declare @startdate datetime; declare @enddate datetime;   set @startdate = '04/01/2010'; set @enddate = '04/30/2010';   select count(id) from triphistory where tripdate between @startdate and @enddate

  • Should subcontractors be paid for a lunch hour and breaks? [closed]

    - by Richard DesLonde
I have never charged my clients for lunch-time or breaks, and I have never paid a subcontractor for it before either (at least not to my knowledge). My view has always been that subcontracting has many positives (higher pay, autonomy, etc.) and many negatives (no benefits, etc.) and one of the negatives is you get paid for productive time, which does not include lunch or breaks. But I still wonder, should subcontractors be paid like employees, for lunch breaks, coffee breaks etc.?

In Opensuse, I can always use Ctrl+Up to autocomplete the command line using previously typed command. That feature is very useful for me as it allows me to work faster without having to retype long command. Can anyone provide a way to enable this on Ubuntu? Thank you

  • git commit –m “CodePlex now supports Git!”

Finally, yes, CodePlex now supports Git! Git has been one of the top rated requests from the CodePlex community for some time: Admittedly, when we launched CodePlex, we never expected that at some point we would be running a source control system originally invented by Linus Torvalds to use for the Linux kernel. Though I would also say, nobody would have thought the open source ecosystem would be as important to Microsoft as it has become now. Giving CodePlex users what they ask for and supporting their open source efforts has always been important to us, and we have a long list of improvements planned, so stay tuned as we have more up our sleeves! Why Git? So why Git? CodePlex already has Mercurial for distributed version control and TFS (which also supports subversion clients) for centralized version control. The short answer is that the CodePlex community voted, loud and clear, that Git support was critical. Additionally, we just like it, we use Git on our team every day and making the DVCS workflows more available to the CodePlex community is just the right thing to do. Forks and Pull Requests One of the capabilities that distributed version control systems, such as Mercurial and Git, enable is the Fork and Pull Request workflow.  Just like with Mercurial, projects configured to use Git enable Forking the source and submitting contributions back via Pull Requests. The Fork/Pull Request workflow is a key accelerator to many open source projects and you will see improvements in our support coming later this year. More Choice With the addition of Git, now CodePlex has three options when it comes to Open Source project hosting. Projects can now select between TFS, Mercurial, and Git. Each developer has their own preferences, and for some, centralized version control makes more sense to them. For others, DVCS is the only way to go. We’re equally committed to supporting both these technologies for our users. You can get started today by creating a new project or contribute to an existing project by creating a fork. For help on getting started with Git on CodePlex, see our help documentation here. If you would like to switch your project to use Git, please contact us at CodePlex Support with your project information, and we will be happy to help you out. We're Listening CodePlex is your community, and we want to deliver the experiences you need to have a successful open source project. We want your ideas and feedback to make CodePlex a great development community.  The issue tracker on CodePlex is publicly available. Add suggestions or vote up existing suggestions. And you can always find us on Twitter, I’m @mgroves84; follow us to keep up to date with our latest releases: @codeplex
