• How to prevent one account from unlocking products on other devices using Apple StoreKit?

  We are currently wrapping up a free-to-play game on iOS in which you can purchase non-consumable products. We have been discussing this case internally and are not quite sure what the best practices are as this is our first title. For example, if a user downloads our app, and makes some purchases. These can be restored should the app ever be deleted and reinstalled as long as the user uses the same Apple ID. What is to stop him from making a fake Apple account, purchasing items and then posting this account on the web allowing everyone to get the items for free? That is obviously a worst case situation. But a smaller case would be a user unlocking items for his friends. We do not want this to be an always online game but have considered doing a check on startup if there is internet available. If the currently logged in account doesn't own the products do we lock them again? Probably not because people may simply sign into the device with different Game Center logins at which point we don't want to constantly lock and unlock items. At some point we will be adding multiplayer at which point we can definately do a check with the currently logged in account. This is because A, they will be online when attempting multiplayer, and B, they will want to use their own account for multiplayer. Unfortunately we aren't quite ready for this yet. Has anyone tackled this issue. Are we overthinking here?

For example your brother hears that a friend of his needs a new website, so he gives him your number and highly recommends you. This is really good because the potential client is looking for the service you can perform, and you where already highly recommend.

• Which iPhone ad API has produced the highest revenue for you?

  This isn't a technical question, but more of a request for advice and empirical/anecdotal data. I'm nearly done writing a free app for iPhone, and I'm at the stage where I'm going to put ads into the app. I've had mixed success in the past with iAd (their fill rates have been atrocious recently, and their payouts have cut by about 75% over the past 4 months or so), and would like to know how much ad revenue you, the community, has seen from the various ad APIs you've used for your iPhone apps. This isn't a request for opinion, i.e. which is 'better', only what kinds of numbers you're seeing. I don't need absolute figures, but 'iAd pays x% higher than AdMob, and y% lower than AdSense' would be extremely helpful to me as I make my decision as to which ad API to integrate into my App. Also, have you had any experience or success with integrating multiple ad APIs into the same app? That's something I'm considering doing in my current iAd-filled apps (particularly my iPad app, which has yet to receive a single impression after nearly 60,000 requests)... something like: 1) Request-from-iAd 2) if that fails, request-from-adSense 3) if that fails, request-from-adMob 4) if that fails, ... etc.

• What is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)?

  A Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)  can also be called a traditional database that uses a Structured Query Language (SQL) to provide access to stored data while insuring the integrity of the data. The data is stored in a collection of tables that is defined by relationships between data items. In addition, data permitted to be joined in new relationships. Traditional databases primarily process data through transactions called transaction processing. Transaction processing is the methodology of grouping related business operations based predefined business events. An example of this can be seen when a person attempts to purchase an item from an online e-tailor. The business must execute specific operations for a related  business event. In this case, a business must store the following information: Customer Info, Order Info, Order Item Info, Customer Payment Data, Payment Results, and Current Order Status. Example: Pseudo SQL Operations needed for processing an online e-tailor sale. • Terrible App Review of the Week&ndash;October 2nd

  As some people know, I have a few apps in the Windows Phone Store.  One of these apps was intended to be a gimmicky app that did NOT really do anything useful.  It was just a funny little app that you probably try it once, then almost immediately uninstall.  To my surprise, this app ended up in some of the Top App lists and actually got a large number of downloads (for the Windows Phone Store).  Along with these downloads came a large number of really terrible and offensive reviews.  People are insulting me and saying awful things that they would never say to someone in person (I hope).  I am ok with this.  I can take the bad reviews and it doesn’t really bother me, but I still think that people are incredibly dis-respectful with their app reviews.  So..I am going to start sharing the best of the worst reviews.  If by chance this is your review, please contact me.  I would love to have a quick chat… Literally THE crappiest app I could of downloaded. • Need Directions to become a programmer [closed]

  Before youguys go on about how there are many types of programmers, please read through the post. Long term goal: Develop my own software (company) Short term goal: Get a job that involves coding/programming Current status: Support Analyst (at a software company but does not involve any programming) with 40k salary, 3rd year computer engineering student I had everything figured out. I'm going to develop a 2D scrolling game for iphone or android, publish the app, sell a bunch, and then apply at a studios as a software developer. And then something hit me. I think I need to get a job that involes programming to learn as much as I can in the shortest time possible. So I got a phone interview at a fast growing start up software company, passed that no problem, but then had to take an online technical assessment. That failed miserably. I thought that if I could just present myself, show that I am hard working, positive attitude, eager to make self improvements, type of a guy, I could get the job. I was wrong. And now, I am lost. Im thinking of staying with my job until I find a new one as a programmer. I will be working, self studying, and trying to make this happen without finishing university. I forgot to mention that the online technical assessment was based on data structures/algorithms, OO design, runtime complexity. I was hoping that I could get some guidence. Should I be focusing on app development or study computer science fundamentals? I have a list of books I can be going through: Learning C# O'Reilly (I got interested in C# because of Unity3D and Mono), C# 5.0 in a Nutshell, Head First Design Patterns, Code Complete, Introduction to Algorithms, Programming Interviews Exposed, Cracking the Coding Interview, The Google Resume.

• Cloning from a given point in the snapshot tree

  Although we have just released VirtualBox 4.3, this quick blog entry is about a longer standing ability of VirtualBox when it comes to Snapshots and Cloning, and was prompted by a question posed internally, here in Oracle: "Is there a way I can create a new VM from a point in my snapshot tree?". Here's the scenario: Let's say you have your favourite work VM which is Oracle Linux based and as you installed different packages, such as database, middleware, and the apps, you took snapshots at each point like this: But you then need to create a new VM for some other testing or to share with a colleague who will be using the same Linux and Database layers but may want to reconfigure the Middleware tier, and may want to install his own Apps. All you have to do is right click on the snapshot that you're happy with and clone: Give the VM that you are about to create a name, and if you plan to use it on the same host machine as the original VM, it's a good idea to "Reinitialize the MAC address" so there's no clash on the same network: Now choose the Clone type. If you plan to use this new VM on the same host as the original, you can use Linked Cloning else choose Full.  At this point you now have a choice about what to do about your snapshot tree. In our example, we're happy with the Linux and Database layers, but we may want to allow our colleague to change the upper tiers, with the option of reverting back to our known-good state, so we'll retain the snapshot data in the new VM from this point on: The cloning process then chugs along and may take a while if you chose a Full Clone: Finally, the newly cloned VM is ready with the subset of the Snapshot tree that we wanted to retain: Pretty powerful, and very useful.  Cheers, -FB

• Transformation?

  I started working at Oracle in 1997.  Since then, we (and most everyone) have been talking about transforming finance operations....but what does that mean exactly?  From my perspective, I thought it meant eliminate waste and menial tasks and giving your finance team more time to work on more strategic things.  That seems logical and simplistic, but how much progress have finance teams (and their IT departments) really made over the past fifteen years? I have yet to talk to a customer that doesn't have one amusing task that makes me chuckle.  Sometimes they still print hard copies of transactions to "file," or sometimes they print 700 pages of data to "analyze," or sometimes they cut and paste from one or more reports into a spreadsheet.  Upon hearing these things, my first question is always, "Why do you do that?" to which their response is rarely the same.    Sometimes it's related to trust (both the employee and the system).  Sometimes, it's habit-based.  And sometimes it is just impossible to accomplish the end result without some manual effort. I will say that I used to print nearly everything that I needed to review.  Partly, because I liked having the ability to scribble notes on the paper, and partly, because it was uncomfortable to read online.  However, I have changed. Rarely do I print anything anymore.  It's easier for me to read and notate online, and well, I guess I've just changed my habits. So where do you think our resistance to change comes from?  Is it truly deficits in our systems, or is it our own personal resistance to change?  What's your most annoying & untransformed task?

• Twitter "Authentication Error" Turpial & Choqok (latest versions)

  I use Turpial a lot, but Turpial isn't connecting at all. I can still connect to Twitter thru the OS app (no issues signing in through Online Accounts) and of course I can still sign in using the browser, but Turpial gives me an "Authentication Error" and Choqok fails to do anything. I've tried changing my password, revoking the Turpial and Ubuntu apps in Twitter and re-enabling them, but then it gives me an "Invalid Credentials" message. I've even removed and installed Turpial multiple times, still nothing. I can't find any information or resources for this type of error from Turpial online. I think it may be something recent after finding this message elsewhere: (article related to "Birdie") It looks promising i'm currently using it atm, since all the other twitter clients no longer work due to the API 1.0 shutdown (posted today) I've never used Choqok before today, so I don't even know if I've set it up properly. It's failing to retrieve or send Tweets it just blank screens, but at least it signs in. I've figured that this isn't an issue with Ubuntu, or Turpial or Choqok, or the router (already replaced it today), so I don't really know what I'm dealing with here. I hope it's not another API issue, Facebook did something similar just a few weeks ago

• What is the correct way to install Gnome Shell 3.6 on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I don't want to use Ubuntu Gnome Remix because I think it is kind of "incomplete". I prefer to install Gnome Shell on Ubuntu 12.10. I've searched the net for instructions on how to do it and found two different ways: Simply search for Gnome Shell on Ubuntu Software Center and install it. Follow the instructions from this WebUpd8's post. Now, my doubt is: what is the differecen between the two methods? Which is the correct way to do it? Does the first one lack features? If so, which ones? Is the second one better? Why? Is there a third and better method I haven't found? By the way, I have already tried (for testing purposes) the second method (WebUpd8's) and noticed that it installed some apps I really don't want to have, such as AbiWord and Gnumeric, because they are Gnome's default applications. So, "if" the second method is the way to go, I can certainly remove those apps manually, after installation, with no worries, right? Thank you very much for your attention.

• Can't connect nonlocally after 12.10 upgrade

  I've just upgraded one of my systems from 12.04 to 12.10. Now I can't connect on that system beyond my local network. Connections within the local network seem to work fine, and I can make nonlocal connections from other machines (like the one I'm asking this question from). I suspect that some routing information has been messed up, but I don't know where to look for it. It's not a nameserver problem -- pinging outside sites by their IP addresses doesn't work either. I have another laptop next to this one, also running Kubuntu 12.10. On the one that can't connect, arp produces no output. On the other one, it produces 192.168.0.1 ether 00:23:69:fa:ce:ae C wlan0 On the working machine, the output of netstat starts with some tcp entries. On the nonworking one, those entries are absent. I asked this question on the Ubuntu forum but haven't gotten any answers there. One further complication: since the troublesome machine has no outside connection, it's extremely difficult to download anything to it. For what it's worth, "ping 8.8.8.8" produces "connect: Network is unreachable". Update: after a lot of fiddling, I have my external world back. I don't know what the key action was, but the first indication of progress was that "ping 8.8.8.8" worked. At that point I still didn't have a working nameserver, so external URLs didn't work. But I did this (based on an online post, of course): sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf and answered Yes to all prompts. That did the trick!! Apparently my problem was unique, or close to it, since I couldn't find any online references to it: local net working, remote net not working, including explicit IP addresses. So I suppose that if no one else has this problem, no one cares about the solution!!

• Patients are Running out of Patience

  Healthcare is in a dramatic state of change globally and the change is being driven by patients. Patients are no longer content to wait in line, endure appointment delays and stay on hold waiting for a health insurance representative. Instead, patients are demanding on-line access to physicians, joining communities with fellow patients, scheduling appointments online and resolving claims issues over email.  To accomodate the demand for patient connectivity, providers are innovating to find new ways to collaborate with patients. To address the demand, providers are providing 24/7 access online and pioneering ways to deliver care via mobile devices -  for example using your iPhone as a heart monitor. • Is it possible to keep only one Database for both web and desktop applications?

  I'm experiencing a trouble with my business model, let me explain better. I'm developing a software for 1 year and few months, it's for the food industry, more exactly a software to: Delivery, Take Way, Table Reservation, POS, Accounts Payable and Receivable, Prints(receipt), Kitchen Monitors Orders, Customers Orders Control and Fiscal Area. Well, I had separated the software mainly in two areas, one is web area and the other is desktop area (Used by Admins only) and local installed. 1 - Web Area (Basically do the follow:) Show Catalog with the products Customers Make Orders Customers Pay for the Orders etc ... as mentioned above 2 - Desktop Area Manage Orders Manage Customers Manage Suppliers Manage Accounts Payable and Receivable etc ... as mentioned above The web area is hosted in an online web server (scripts and database are online). The Desktop area is hosted locally in a Linux machine with a local database and local scripts files. My question is: Is it possible to keep only one Database for both applications? If YES, please what is the best approach? Follow my technical specification environment Database: Actually I have two databases working and I would love to keep only one. Operating System: Linux (Kernel 2.6.X and above) or Windows (XP and above) For the Web Area Apache, PHP, Python, Java Script, Shell Script and MySQL. • New Nokia SDK 2.0 for Java (beta)

  Nokia recently launched the Asha 305, 306, and 311, which are full touch devices with smartphone-like functionality at a low price. This makes them particularly attractive to consumers in the developing and developed world who may not be able to afford a smartphone but have a strong demand for apps and the smartphone experience. The Asha phones are the latest addition to Nokia's Series 40 platform, all of which support Java ME. • How to learn to deliver quality software designs when working on a tight deadline?

  I read many books about how to design great software, but I kind of struggle to come up with a good design decisions when it comes to business apps, especially when the timeframe is tough. In the company I currently work for, the following situation happen all the time: my teamlead tells me that there's a task to do, I call some guy or a girl from business who tells me exactly what is it they want, and then I start coding. The task always fits in some existing application (we do only web apps or web services), usually it's purpose is to pull data from one datasource and put into the other one, with some business logic attached in the process. I start coding and then, after spending some time on a problem, my code didn't work as expected - either because of technical mistake or my lack of knowledge of the domain. The business is ringing me 2-3 times a day to hurry me up. I ask my team lead to help, he comes up, sees my code and goes like 'What's this?'. Then he throws away about half of my code, including all the design decisions I made, writes 2-3 methods that does the job (each of them usually 200-300 lines long or more, by the way), and task is complete, code works as it should have. The guy is smarter than me, obviously, and I'm aware of that. My goal is to be better software developer, that means write better code, not finish the job quicker with some crappy code. And the thing is, when I have enough time to tackle a problem, I can come up with a design that is good (in my opinion, of course), but I fall short to do so when I'm on a tight deadline. • Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

  Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request. • Help with collision detection method [on hold]

  I was wondering if any of you could spare me some time to go over some collision detection on my platform engine. i tried XNA a few years back but for reasons i wont go into online could not continue, my health is now at a state where i am ready to try again but due to my current circumstances (and age) schooling is out of the question so i turn to you guys for help. Whilst i can adapt the MS sample ok and have some great features, you will agree modifying code is not really learning. So i have spent the last couple of week going over my old MS code and lots of stuff online and decided on what i want and have ported most of it over to code that i understand 90% of. I have my player class that moves about, jumps with gravity, has animations and a bounding box that follows it around. I have my map & basic level class to load levels from text files. Its just how i handle the collisions that i am struggling with as i will want per pixel collision on some tiles(i have code for this in a pong game i made so that should be ok). I'm pretty clear in my mind on what i need to do its just putting it in code and in the right place, here's what i was thinking. I was going to do it all in layers, have a tile layer, a collision layer & an item layer this way i could make a nice map editor in Win Forms at some point. Anyway i need to read in the collision layer the assign each tile a rectangle and collision property, and this is where i get me. Would any of you be able to spare some time and go over this with me ? I will post some code later Regards Del

• What kinds of languages would be most useful for this kind of webapp?

  I've had some experience with programming in the past (2-3 years of C++ self-teaching), so I'm no stranger to the programming process, but there are so many languages out there that I'm lost when thinking about this project idea that's been floating around my head: I would like to create a webapp that would be used for helping somebody figure out what kinds of productivity tools would suit them. The first part of the app would basically be a survey with a variety of questions that would help weed out tools that wouldn't be useful for them. (Slider bar between minimalist and maximizer, slider bar between all free apps and no cost limit, checkboxes on what platforms are required, etc.) While the person is filling out the survey, they will see a web of applications, webapps, and other tools forming on the screen with links showing the relationships the programs have with eachother (syncing supported, good combinations of apps, etc.), along with a list of applications below sorted by general use (notetaking, document organization, storage, etc.) I would imagine that each program entered into the database that will be accessed would have a certain set of characteristics, ie. price, user friendliness, platforms supported, general uses, etc. and the survey would be designed to correlate to those elements and remove programs that don't match the criteria set. The difficult part of this entire process would be getting the web of applications to arrange itself and render properly. Now that I've finished mind-dumping, onto my question: What kinds/combinations of programming languages would you imagine being useful for this kind of project, and why? I learn best by setting up a project for myself like this one and tinkering with the languages, so I don't mind if the end product is out of reach from my current skill level. I'd just like some guidance so I don't fumble in the dark for too long.

• Laser range finder, what language to use? Beginner advice

  I hope this is the right place. I am a programming beginner, and I want to make a laser range finder, and I need advice about how to proceed etc. In a few weeks I will get a lot of dirt cheap 3-5V lasers and some cheap usb webcams. I will point the laser and webcam in parallel, and somehow use trigonometry and programming to determined distance. I have seen online that others made done it this way, I have purposefully not looked at the details too much because I want to develop it on my own, and learn, but I know the general outline. I have a general idea of how to proceed. The program loads in a picture from the webcam, and I dunno how images work really, but I imagine there is a format that is basically an array of RGB values.. is this right? I will load in the red values, and find the most red one. I know the height difference between the laser and the cam. I know the center dot in the image, I know the redmost dot. I'm sure there's some way to figure out some range there. TO THE POINT: 1) Is my reasoning sound thus far, especially in terms of image analysis? I don't need complete solutions, just general points 2) What I need to figure out, is what platform to use. I have an arduino... apparently, I've read it's too weak to process images. Read that online. I know some C I know some Python I have Matlab. Which is the best option? I do not need high sampling rates, I have not decided on whether it should be automated or whether I should make a GUI with a button to press for samples. I will keep it simple and expand I think. I also do not need it to be super accurate, I'm just having fun here. Advice!
