  • Client-side or server-side processing?

    So, I'm new to dynamic web design (my sites have been mostly static with some PHP), and I'm trying to learn the latest technologies in web development (which seems to be AJAX), and I was wondering, if you're transferring a lot of data, is it better to construct the page on the server and "push" it to the user, or is it better to "pull" the data needed and create the HTML around it on the clientside using JavaScript? More specifically, I'm using CodeIgniter as my PHP framework, and jQuery for JavaScript, and if I wanted to display a table of data to the user (dynamically), would it be better to format the HTML using CodeIgniter (create the tables, add CSS classes to elements, etc..), or would it be better to just serve the raw data using JSON and then build it into a table with jQuery? My intuition says to do it clientside, as it would save bandwidth and the page would probably load quicker with the new JavaScript optimizations all these browsers have now, however, then the site would break for someone not using JavaScript...   • Python - converting wide-char strings from a binary file to Python unicode strings...

    It's been a long day and I'm a bit stumped. I'm reading a binary file that contains lots of wide-char strings and I want to dump these out as Python unicode strings. (To unpack the non-string data I'm using the struct module, but I don't how to do the same with the strings.) For example, reading the word "Series": myfile = open("test.lei", "rb") myfile.seek(44) data = myfile.read(12) # data is now 'S\x00e\x00r\x00i\x00e\x00s\x00' How can I encode that raw wide-char data as a Python string? Edit: I'm using Python 2.6

    How can I select all elements within an HTML document with a specific class and specific element type? I'm trying to select all anchors with the class title loggedin from an HTML document (and then open them within the browser). These are within parragraphs with the class title. They are leafs in the following DOM tree: + body + div class='content' + div id='siteTable' class='sitetable linklisting' + div class='thing id-t3_xxxx xxx xxx link' + div class='entry unvoted' + p class='title' + a class='title loggedin ' Where x indicates variable content. (I'm looking to do this in raw JavaScript, ie, not in jQuery.)

  • Apple Magic Trackpad Gestures carried out as personalized Commands in Windows

    I want to have the Apple Magic Trackpad to work on Windows, but NOT as a regular Mouse! I will need the normal Trackpad Gestures to work with a c# Application (i.e. when carring out a 2 finger swipe to the left, it will start playing a song...). I guess I´ll have to write my own driver? Is there a way to use Apples MAgic Trackpad Driver for Windows and re-write that one? OR is there any way (API, self-written driver), so that I could just hook the gestures to my Commands? Or any RAW Input examples? Does anybody know how to do that, or where to start? Thank you so much, I´m really lost.

  • How to read a file byte by byte in Python and how to print a bytelist as a binary?

    Hi, I'm trying to read a file byte by byte, but I'm not sure how to do that. I'm trying to do it like that: file = open(filename, 'rb') while 1: byte = file.read(8) # Do something... So does that make the variable byte to contain 8 next bits at the beginning of every loop? It doesn't matter what those bytes really are. The only thing that matters is that I need to read a file in 8-bit stacks. EDIT: Also I collect those bytes in a list and I would like to print them so that they don't print out as ASCII characters, but as raw bytes i.e. when I print that bytelist it gives the result as ['10010101', '00011100', .... ]

    I have this code: hubSpinner.setOnItemSelectedListener(new OnItemSelectedListener() { public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parentView, View selectedItemView, int position, long id) { final MediaPlayer mp2 = MediaPlayer.create(Textbox.this, R.raw.hero); mp2.start(); } public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> parentView) { } }); (The code basically runs when a new item is selected of a spinner and then plays a song, -which later will be a variable based on what was picked, but i'm fine as it is for now) Problem: And I want to be able to use 'mp2' out of this public void, (I want a button which pauses it) How can I do this?     Hi hi, I'm looking for a easy to learn php library to use for my coming web app project. I've recently finished a web app with fully handwritten raw php code and it's absolutely hard to be done again for another project. even though I have the recent project code snippets to be used again, but due to their non-structural arrangement (not object oriented), i have no passion to use 'em again. I have no experience with common frameworks like ZF, CakePhp, CodeIgniter, so I think to get my hands on a multipurpose OO library for my web app and the framework learning will be the next step! any suggestion? UPDATE: Many thanks guys, I have not enough time to get through the depth of every lib or framework you have kindly introduced. Since I'm going one step further I'm going to use ZF as famous framework which could provide me more job opportunities perhaps. thankssss :)

  • Custom HTTP Request headers in HTML

    Does anyone know if its possible to send out custom http REQUEST headers in HTML without having to use javascript (no xhr wrapper). Would it be possible to define them as meta tags within the head? Or may they be defined in the form somewhere? <meta http-equip="x-something-custom" name="custom value" /> this works, however, this is a RESPONSE header. What I need to set a REQUEST header. I'm not looking for setting hidden fields in forms, but actual raw http header manipulation with html tags. Is this possible?

    I've got several demonstration programs that use Electroserver, but I'd also want to test the same code using Smartfox. What is the most straightforward method to do this kind of migration? I know the types of classes that need to be changed, but since the terminology is slightly different in both libraries, it's difficult to make a smooth transition. Fortunately, the programs are simple and I can probably do a bit of trial and error in replacing each missing class, but is there a better solution? Thanks.

  • Strophe javascript prevent disconnection on some delay

    Hello, I am developing javascript XMPP application which uses Strophe library to connect to Jabber server. I need to engage the thread for about 5-10 seconds when Strophe connects to the server. Thread is engaged by running java applet and after it releases the thread it goes back to handle XMPP events, however at the moment I cannot manage to do that - trying to use a connection after delay gives me 404 HTTP error (this is sent by XMPP-BOSHS service straight after Strophe sends POST request with XMPP message to it). I was trying to 'pause' a connection with Strophe's connection.pause and then resume it - didn't work. Would sending some raw content to the server, maybe if it's possible telling it that client's gonna be unresponsive for a short time work ? Are there any other solutions ? Thanks

I see that we have float and Put( Integer'Image( Float'digits ) ); on my machine gives a value of 6, which is not enough for numerical computations. Does Ada has double and long double types as in C?     Hi, I am currently using JQuery's validation plugin for basic form validation such as required fields. I want to add functionality so that when the user types in the username field, an ajax call is triggered to check whether the username is already taken. My requirements are: Preferably integrate with JQuery Validation plugin, rather than writing a custom function I want the lookup to occur on the nkeyup event I want the lookup to be triggered approx 0.5 seconds after the keyup event has occurred.   • GUI Control For Audio Presentation

    I need GUI control for audio file presentation. The language is not very important but it should run on windows platform. I should be able to :- load the file play the sound put and move markers across the audio bar. it would be nice if it can load itself from RTP wireshark captures (and not wav files). An example may be seen in audacity (may be someone even had an experience extracting it from there). Writing nyquist scripts in audacity is not a good option because I have to operate on RTP captures and not on raw sound samples. Another example of such control is wireshark RTP analyzer. Any advise?

  • Python Daemon Subprocess not working at boot

    I am attempting to write a python daemon that will launch at boot. The goal of the script is to receive a job from our gearman load balancing server and complete the job. I am using the python-daemon module from pypi (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-daemon/). The nature of the job that it is completing is converting images in the orf (olympus raw image format) to jpeg. In order to accomplish this an outside program is used, ufraw in this case. The problem comes in when I start the daemon at boot, if I launch from the shell it runs perfectly and completes the work. When it starts at boot it is unable to launch the subprocess command. commandString = '/usr/bin/ufraw-batch --interpolation=four-color --wb=camera --compression=100 --output="' + outfile + '" --out-type=jpg --overwrite "' + infile + '"' args = shlex.split(commandString) process = subprocess.Popen(args).wait() I am not sure what I am doing wrong.     I work with Zend Framework a lot and I just took a peek at Kohana, and it strikes me as odd that this is a typical scenario in these frameworks: throw Some_Componenents_Exception( 'invalid argument' ); Where I believe this wouldn't be mouch more useful: throw Some_Components_InvalidArgumentException( 'whatever discription' ); Because it is easier to catch. I suspect, but immediately admit it's prejudiced, that the former practice is common in the PHP community. Should we, the PHP community, start using these descriptive types of expections more?

  • Why does Silverlight provides webcam and microphone support without any encoding API?

    In the list of new features in Silverlight 4 you will find following: Webcam and microphone to allow sharing of video and audio for instance for chat or customer service applications. Silverlight captures an audio stream as raw pcm. So how would you realize for example audio/video chat or client/server audio recording application without any encoding on the client side, where there is no APIs in Silverlight available? Much less in a Silverlight you cannot use an unmanaged dll. You can use a com automation (a new feature of the Silverlight 4, I think only for Windows) but only if it was already installed on the client side (do you know any encoding COM servers that are installed with the windows). Otherwise, how would you deploy a custom COM server within you Silverlight application? The only way I found is either to deploy a command-line encoding and use it with COM AutomationFactory.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") or to implement an encoding to use it in your own AudioSink.
