  • Getting Assert to work in Visual C++ Unit Tests?

    I'm using Visual Studio 2008's built in testing framework in my Visual C++ project. I'm adding a new Test Project, then a new Unit Test. However, I can't use any of the functions provided by Assert. Assert shows up in the Intellisense, but I can't do anything with it. I've done unit tests fine in Visual C#. Am I forgetting to do anything? EDIT: There isn't much code because everything I'm doing is auto-generated by Visual Studio 2008. Here are the steps I'm doing: File - New Project - Visual C++ - General - Empty Project Right click solution in Solution Explorer - Add - New Project... Visual C++ - Test - Test Project Open UnitTest1.cpp (auto-generated) Go to TestMethod1() From here, when I try to use the Assert class (like Assert.AreEqual), I can't do it. If I do the same in a Visual C# project, it works fine.

  • SQL Express as a main DB

    Hi everyone, Does anyone out there use SQL Express 2008 R2 in a production environment? I am looking at hosting a Windows VPS as a server for a client software product I have developed. Clients connect to the server, send their data to a service running on the server, and the service updates the database. I'm trying to keep running costs down, and whilst I have a license for SQL Developer I obviously can't use this in a production environment. Would it be wise/possible to use SQL Express 2008, and if so why/why not? Thanks, JD

  • Can the Sequence of RecordSets in a Multiple RecordSet ADO.Net resultset be determined, controlled?

    I am using code similar to this Support / KB article to return multiple recordsets to my C# program. But I don't want C# code to be dependant on the physical sequence of the recordsets returned, in order to do it's job. So my question is, "Is there a way to determine which set of records from a multiplerecordset resultset am I currently processing?" I know I could probably decipher this indirectly by looking for a unique column name or something per resultset, but I think/hope there is a better way. P.S. I am using Visual Studio 2008 Pro & SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.

    Imagine that we have two tables as follows: Trades ( TradeRef INT NOT NULL, TradeStatus INT NOT NULL, Broker INT NOT NULL, Country VARCHAR(3) NOT NULL ) CTMBroker ( Broker INT NOT NULL, Country VARCHAR(3) NULL ) (These have been simplified for the purpose of this example). Now, if we wish to join these two tables on the Broker column, and if a country exists in the CTMBroker table on the Country, we have the following two choices: SELECT T.TradeRef,T.TradeStatus FROM Trades AS T JOIN CTMBroker AS B ON B.Broker=T.Broker AND ISNULL(B.Country, T.Country) = T.Country or SELECT T.TradeRef,T.TradeStatus FROM Trades AS T JOIN CTMBroker AS B ON B.Broker=T.Broker AND (B.COUNTRY=T.Country OR B.Country IS NULL) These are both logically equivalent, however in this specific circumstance for our database (SQL Server 2008, SP1) two different execution plans are produced for these two queries with the second version significantly outperforming the first version in terms of both time and logical reads. My question really is as follows: as a general rule would (2) be preferred to (1), or does this just happen to be exploiting some particular idiosyncracy of the optimiser in 2008 SP1 (that could therefore change with future versions of SQL Server).

    My client has a XenServer 6.0.2 installation with 2 Window Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. Whenever the virtual machines are rebooted they lose their IP settings (IP address, subnet, gateway). Each time after a reboot I need to login to each VM via XenCenter and re-apply the required static IP settings. This causes issues with connected iSCSI drives within each VM - drives need to be reconnected after each reboot.   • Difference between User Control and Custom Control Library

    I'm working on creating a date/time user control in WPF using C# 2008. My first user control. I'm also using Matthew MacDonald's book, "Pro WPF in C# 2008". In that book he strongly recommended creating a user control using the WPF Custom Control Library project template; so I followed his suggestion. I've finished writing the code which would go into what I think of as the code-behind file. Now I'm ready to write the XAML. The only problem is, I just discovered there is no corresponding .xaml file? So, I don't get why using a WPF Custom Control Library project is better, or prefered, when writing a user control?

    hi guys, i was wondering how could i deploy/make it into an installer for an app which is created using vs 2008 express. i know that the setup and deployment feature is only available via the full version of visual studio right? So are there any add ons or perhaps additional free/or non-free if it has to come to that which i can use to do this? or is the best tool for the job is the old visual studio installer from the vs 6.0 days? :) thanks Updates: After some googling, i found this link on using click once to deploy vs 2008 express with tutorials in them, i'll check it out, but of course more & better recommendation is always welcomed :)

  • Porting existing code from C# 2.0 to C#3.0 and .Net 3.5 (possibly .net 4.0)

    Our one and only enterprise application suite has been developed over last 3 years using C# 2.0 on .Net 3.0. We use winforms and WCF heavily. The development tools is VS 2005 Pro / TFS 2005 / Resharper 3.1 As technical lead I obviously understand the benefits in a move to C#3.0 and .Net 3.5. But I want to convince management for a move to C#3.0, .Net 3.5, VS 2008 and TFS 2008. They will obviously be interested in things like productivity, cost, quality etc. Please suggest me some ideas on how best to make my case. Given that this may not happen till mid next year am I better off to hold till VS 2010 and .Net 4.0 is out.

  • About the leading newline in Visual Studio solution files.

    Sometimes, for unknown reasons, VS 2008 creates solution files led by a newline. Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 10.00 # Visual Studio 2008 [...] This happened on various machines, and I have no idea why this is. A Google search did not yield any useful results. Now, why do I worry about this? Because I can't open these solutions in Windows Explorer. I have to open VS, select File - Open - Solution and it works fine. But to open solutions from within Explorer, I have to edit the sln file and remove the leading newline. Edit: After Leom's suggestion I tested a few times and found that the issue is solely dependent on the leading newline.

  • Dependency Replication with TFS 2010 Build

    Some time ago, I wrote a post about how to implement dependency replication using TFS 2008 Build. We use this for Library builds, where we set up a build definition for a common library, and have the build check the resulting assemblies back into source control. The folder is then branched to the applications that need to reference the common library. See the above post for more details. Of course, we have reimplemented this feature in TFS 2010 Build, which results in a much nicer experience for the developer who wants to setup a new library build. Here is how it looks: There is a separate build process template for library builds registered in all team projects The following properties are used to configure the library build: Deploy Folder in Source Control is the server path where the assemblies should be checked in DeploymentFiles is a list of files and/or extensions to what files to check in. Default here is *.dll;*.pdb which means that all assemblies and debug symbols will be checked in. We can also type for example CommonLibrary.*;SomeOtherAssembly.dll in order to exclude other assemblies You can also see that we are versioning the assemblies as part of the build. This is important, since the resulting assemblies will be deployed together with the referencing application.   When the build executes, it will see of the matching assemblies exist in source control, if not, it will add the files automatically:   After the build has finished, we can see in the history of the TestDeploy folder that the build service account has in fact checked in a new version: Nice!   The implementation of the library build process template is not very complicated, it is a combination of customization of the build process template and some custom activities. Next, I will add funtionality for automatically merging the assemblies (using ILMerge) as part of the build, we do this to keep the number of references to a minimum.

Feature 1 – Set up Work Items Queries as Team Favorites The task board looks cooler when the team favourite work item queries show up on the task board. The demo setup console application now has the ability to set up the work item queries as team favorites for you. If you want to see how you can add Team Favorites programmatically, refer to this blogpost here. Image 1 – Task board without Team Favorites Let’s see how the TFS Demo Setup application sets-up team favorites as part of the run… Open up the DemoDictionary.xml and you should be able to see the new node <TeamFavorites> this accepts multiple <TeamFavorite>. You simply need to specify the <Type> as Query and in the <Name> specify the name of the work item query that you would like added as a favorite. Image 2 – Highlighting the TeamFavorites block in DemoDictionary.xml So, when the demo set up application is run with the above config, work item queries “Blocked Tasks” and “Open Impediments” are added as team favorites. They then show up on the task board, as highlighted in the screen shot below. Image 3 – Team Favorites setup during the TFS demo setup app execution Feature 2 – Choose what you want to setup and exclude the rest I had a great feature request come in requesting the ability to exclude parts of the setup at the sole discretion of the executioner. To accommodate this, I have added an attribute with each block, the attribute “Run” accepts “true” or “false”. If you set the flag to true then at the time of execution that block would be considered for setup and if you set the flag to false, the block will be ignored during the setup. So, lets look at an example below… The attribute "Run” is set to true for TeamSettings, Team Favorites, TeamMembers and WorkItems. So, all of these would be setup as part of the demo setup application execution. Image 4 – New Attribute Run added to all blocks in DemoDictionary.xml If I did not want to recreate the team and did not want to add new work items but only wanted to add favorites and team members to the existing team “AgileChamps1” then I could simple run the application with below DemoDictionary.xml. Note – TeamSettings Run=”false” and WorkItems Run=”false”. Image 5 – TeamFavorites and TeamMembers set as true and others set to false Feature 3 – Usability Improvement If you try and assign a work item to a team member that does not exist then the application throws a nasty exception. This behaviour has now been changed, upon adding such a work item, the work items will be created and not assigned to any user. The work item id will be printed to the console making it simple for you to assign the work item manually. As you can see in the screen shot below, I am trying to assign the work item to a user “Tarun” and a user “v2” both are *not valid users in my team project collection* so the tool creates the work items and provides me the work item id and lets me know that since the user is invalid the work item could not be assigned to the user.   • Sysprep and Capture task sequence failing using MDT 2010

    I have created a Windows Deployment Services server in Windows 2008 R2. When I originally set it up I was able to successfully use MDT 2010 to create my boot images as well as creating task sequences that would sysprep and capture, and deploy my custom .wim files. Everything was working perfectly. About a month later I boot up my Windows 7 x86 image and run Windows updates to keep my image up to date. I then go and run my sysprep and capture task sequence and I get the following errors: I searched online for the cause of this error message and it just seems to be a generic permission denied type of error message. I then decided to completely rebuild my VM image from scratch and try again. I am still getting the same error messages as before. The following is what I have tried troubleshooting this issue: Troubleshooting: I have ensured that that UAC and the firewall is turned completely off when trying to capture the image. I have tried recreating the task sequence and making sure that the deployment share is updated. I have ensured that the local Administrator account is enabled and has the same password as specified in the task sequence. I have tried joining the computer to the domain and running the task sequence and I get a different error: I have attempted to run the script from the command prompt with "Run as Administrator" and I still receive the same errors above. For testing purposes I have ensured that Everyone has read/write access to my deployment share. I have spent days on trying to resolve this to no avail. Any ideas?   • Can't connect to samba

    Windows 7, connecting to Samba shares I have a follow up question from the link above. I am running Samba 3.0.23d on FreeBSD is release 7.1 I changed the policies as described above but still cannot connect to the samba server with the windows 7 or a server 2008. I feel it is a problem with recognizing the new machines on the network. the windows machines can see the samba server, but cannot connect to it or view any of the files. After changing the security policies the samba server asked for network id and password but would not allow the machine to connect, said they were unknown username or bad password. Here is my current config file. there is no sign of encryption anywhere, should I just add the line? not sure what that would do elsewhere.   • AD-Integrated DNS failure: "Access was Denied"

    I have a single Windows 2008 R2 server configured as a domain controller with Active Directory Domain Services and DNS Server. The DNS Server was recently uninstalled and reinstalled in an attempt to fix a (possibly unrelated) problem; the event log was previously flooded with errors (#4000, "The DNS Server was unable to open Active Directory...") which reinstalling did not fix. However, while before it was at least showing and resolving names from the local network (slowly), now it's showing nothing at all. (The original error started with a #4015 error "The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory," followed by a long string of #4000 and a few #4004. This may have been caused when a new DNS name was recently added, but I can't be sure of the timing.) Attempting to manage the DNS through Administrative Tools > DNS brings up an error: The server SERVERNAME could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied. Would you like to add it anyway? Selecting yes just puts a SERVERNAME item on the list, but with all the configuration options grayed out. I attempted editing my hosts file as per this post but to no avail. Running dcdiag, it does identify the home server properly, but fails right away testing connectivity with: Starting test: Connectivity The host blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda could not be resolved to an IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc. Got error while checking LDAP and RPC connectivity. Please check your firewall settings. ......................... SERVERNAME failed test Connectivity Adding the blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda address to hosts (pointing at 127.0.0.1), the connectivity test succeeded but it didn't seem to solve the fundamental problem (Access was denied) so I hashed it out again. Primary DNS server is properly pointing at 127.0.0.1 according to ipconfig /all. And the DNS server is forwarding requests to external addresses properly (if slowly), but the resolving of local network names is borked. The DNS database itself is small enough that I am (grudgingly) able to rebuild it if need be, but the DNS Server doesn't seem willing to let me work with (or around) it at all. (and yes before you ask there are no system backups available) Where do I go from here?   • Accessing TFS from Powershell

    Hello I am new to PowerShell and I am trying to get branches from TFS and merge them using a PowerShell script. Unfortunately I am failing a first hurdle. I do have Visual Studio 2010 install on my local machine and can access the TFS server (also 2010) fine. I am running the script from my local machine and have the following lines: $tfs = get-tfs http://TFSServerName:8080/TFSProject $branchfolders = $tfs.VCS.GetItems('$/Dev/Branches/', $tfs.RecursionType::OneLevel) and I receive the following error on the second line 2 above Exception calling "GetItems" with "2" argument(s): "Unable to connect to the remote server" I have configured the TFS server to accept incoming connections on port 8080 which works but I am now not to sure how to resolve this error. Is further configuration required? Thanks for any help given.

  • don't have "sufficient right" to my own TFS 2010

    after I removed an active directory domain service, I lost all my accounts...then not only the SQL server and the TFS stopped working, the TFs administration console also says that I don't have sufficient right to add members... Now I manage to get the SQL server kind of running, and I can see my project in team explorer, but the TFS still says SQL access denied, SQL server says I don't have permission to add new logins or add my admin account to sysadmin, the TFS still give me the TF246017 tfs could not connect to the database and I don't have sufficient right to add member to any of the project groups... Anybody knows how can I get all these permissions back....?
