  • Is it possible to modify/rebuild an rpm without the srpm?

    I have an rpm for which I need to change the preinstal scriptlet for testing. However, I do not have the SRPM from which is was built. Is it possible to change the scriptlet and/or rebuild the rpm without having the SRPM? If so, how? I've tried using Midnight Commander (mc) to open the rpm as a directory structure and edit the contents, but even with 444 permissions, it won't let me save any changes.

  • Getting a list of packages installed on CentOS (by command line and on the web)

    When installing CentOS (6.2), it installs a whole bunch of packages, but the installation is often very fast, it's hard to note the names of the packages. I have a couple of questions: 1) I'm guessing I could wait for the entire installation to complete and then query for the list of installed packages on the system. How do I do that? 2) Is there a printed list somewhere on the web, so I don't have to install the OS first just to get the list?

  • How to keep programs from source up to date?

    I'm designing a new server setup for hosting multiple websites. (Shared hosting for my clients over at SliceHost.) I've recently moved away from the traditional LAMP setup and chosen Ubuntu, Nginx, php-fpm and mysql. I like it a lot better then my old Apache, suphp, mysql setup. It works great, provided encapsulation between sites and uses substantiallly less memory. However I have one major maintenance problem. In order to have a recent version of Nginx and in order to use php-fpm I've had to compile these programs from source. The reason I see this as a problem is that keeping track of updates, and build configurations will end up being a lot of work. For two programs (and a patch) I can handle it, but it seems like this setup would not scale with many packages and servers. Are there good ways to manage this situation? I'm sure people do this all the time.

  • How are large companies handling the storing and cataloging of software installation disks?

    I just started working in the IT department of a small-medium sized construction company with about 200 users. One of my responsibilities is to setup and configure all new machines that come in. I would like suggestions on how to best manage the installation disks and licenses of the software that comes with them. Plus any additional licensed software such as Autocad, Photoshop, etc as well as peripheral driver disks such as printers and scanners. Right now every machine is associated and labeled with an asset id. All asset ids are kept in a spreadsheet with applicable serial numbers, current user, warranty info, and software licenses. The physical disks are then kept within a folder in a cabinet. Each folder is marked with the asset id number as well as the current user. My problems with this is that the system was not maintained very completely before I came to the company. There are plenty of software folders with no asset ids labeled on them. Plenty of missing software folders (most likely are a lot of the unlabeled folders). Folders with names but not asset ids. Machines get switched to different users without the folders and spreadsheet being updated. I am not saying this method would necessarily be bad if it was better implemented and managed, but if I am going to have to take a lot of time to fix this system currently in place. I thought I would ask the community first on how others manage this process in case there are easier, more efficient ways of doing so. Thank you.

    I've struggled with this one for a whole day, so here is both the problem & solution: After profiling an ASP.NET application on Windows 7 (x64), I exited Visual Studio (possibly a crash) and installed some updates which required a reboot. When I loaded back up the ASP.NET Web Application in my Visual Studio Solution was dimmed out, and the Web & WAS services turned out to be stopped. When I tried starting Windows Process Activation Service, I got the error "parameter is incorrect".

  • Apache2 + Php + Pthreads HowTos

    04 LTS 64 bit. What I would really love to do is sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 but compile PHP with --enable-maintainer-zts so I could later install pthreads with pecl install pthreads. Sadly I understand that it is not possible. I know that the easiest way is to recompile PHP together with apache support and zts. However I really like the way the standard Ubuntu PHP package is configured and I am used to the path`s for CLI php.ini config, Apache php.ini config and other paths for modules and files that this Ubuntu package defines. So i just want to change the package source a little bit and install it. # Get the stuff necessary to build the package sudo apt-get build-dep php5-common # Get the package source sudo apt-get source php5-common At this point I am getting sources not for the php5-common package but the whole php5 package. If I would sudo make && make install at this point, would it mean that I am installing a lot of unnecessary stuff? # Add configuration options ./configure --enable-maintainer-zts Does this mean that I am appending a configuration option? Or am I generating a whole new config? Alternative at this point Is there a way of getting the config options that this package defines, so that I can grab a php source from php.net and compile it with $ ./configure --prefix=package_prefix \ // Option 1 from package --enable-embed \ // Option 2 from package --with-regex=php \ // Option 3 from package Continuing the main idea ... Solution 1 # Compile (Not compiling) sudo make && make install Will I be building PHP with EVERYTHING at this point? Now whenever I use my terminal I get the following errors.: 5 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/1,250 kB of archives. After this operation, 5,120 B of additional disk space will be used.     I am using VS2010, and Silverlight 4. When I run my code the debugging does not work (I get the above error on my breakpoints. When I clean my solution a warning comes up saying that the system cannot find the file specified (a project dll). It is looking in the right path (..\debug), but there is no dll present. I started a new Silverlight 4 project, and get the same error. Sometime's the debugging does work (I am not sure if/what anything changed, but on one occasion I was surprised that my breakpoints worked. After changing one thing the breakpoints stopped working)

  • What is the easiest way to deploy a MVC2 application from Visaul Studio 2010 to IIS 7.5?

    I´ve tried a couple of different ways to deploy a application to a IIS 7.5 running on my machine for testing purposes and i´ve sort of hit a wall. Nothing works out of the box. Everything assumes I have knowledge I don't have and would prefer not to have to aqquire. Google isn't really helping either with answers ranging from "copy files by hand" to "install teamcity and set it up for CI". I have set up TeamCity for java projects before and it's really over kill for my needs at the moment. So anyone know of a fast, simple and easy way to deploy a application during testing/building?

  • Visual Studio 2008 maintenance mode - I can't remember my installation source drive letter!!!

    I've searched high and low for this and can't find the answer anywhere. I installed VS2008, but my drive letters are all mapped differently now, and of course I need to add a component to my current installation (VC++). But since I don't know which drive letter it was installed from, and since I don't want to try to figure it out the brute force way, I was hoping that someone here knew how to figure that out. I poked through HKCU and HKLM in the registry, hoping to find the info there, but couldn't. Does anyone know how to get this to work? Right now, I get the error "A selected drive is no longer valid. Please review your installation path settings before continuing with setup".

  • Share code between projects in a solution in Visual Studio 2008, when building a common assembly is

    Hi, I create an add-on for the product Foo. There are different versions of Foo, namely version 1, 2, 3 and 4. These versions have a mostly compatible API, but not fully. I currently have 5 projects: DotNetCommon - here are the common methods which could be used if I create an add-on or something other than the Foo product. FooOne FooTwo FooThree FooFour The Foo*-projects contains the add-in for version 1-4 of Foo. There are a lot of duplicated files in the Foo*-projects, as there are a lot of things in the API which are identical for all versions of Foo. It would be nice to separate out everything which is common for all Foo-versions. Why not just create a common assembly for all versions of Foo called FooCommon? If I would put all classes which are common for all versions of Foo into a new library project, I would still have to choose which version of Foo the new FooCommon should reference. As said, they are not identical.

I understand that the whole concept of it is to initialize nodes on the go as they are needed but I need all of them to initialize instantly. What is the smart way to do it? The only thing I came up with is to use GetLast() after adding nodes. I believe, there is a better way, or not?

    When running a macro that changes the selected text, tags are automatically closed and the text formatted. How can I prevent that from happening? For example, wrapping text in a tag: DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.Text = String.Format("<tag>{0}</tag>", DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.Text) Ends up with two closing tags: <tag>Text</tag></tag> Even stranger, multiple lines fails: <li>One</li> <li>Two</li> <li>Three</li> An ends up as <ul> <li>One</li> <li>Two</li> <li>Three</li></li></ul> How can I prevent that? As can be seen by the last example, the formatting is wrong and there is an extra </li>

  • Why can't I see the 'dataset project' property in Visual Studio DataSet designer?

    Hi, I am trying to follow 'n tier app design' tutorials and they tell me to set the DataSet Project property from the Data Set Designer in VS, to split table adaptors and entities into seprate projects. I can't see that property! (I'm looking in the same place shown on the videos... all other properties match) Does anybody know why?
