  • LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression not working anymore in .Net 4 / VS 2010 ?

    Hi, I recently migrating my ASP.Net MVC 1 application from VS.Net 2008 / C# 3.5 to VS.NET 2010 / C# 4.0. I massively used a builder to get URL strings from the strongly typed calls. It looks like this : // sample call : string toSamplePage = Url.To<SampleController>(c => c.Page(parameter1, parameter2)); the code is added as an extension to the default UrlHelper : public static string To<Tcontroller>(UrlHelper helper, Expression<Action<Tcontroller>> action) where Tcontroller : Controller { // based on Microsoft.Web.Mvc.dll LinkBuilder return LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression<Tcontroller>(helper.RequestContext, helper.RouteCollection, action); } The only problem of this, is the reference to Microsoft.Web.Mvc dll, but the gain in readability was worth it. Problem : it does not work anymore, return (null) whatever the parameters. Questions : is there a better way now to build links from an expression ? (yes I tried to google it without success) is there a trick to have the former LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression works ? I tried to recompile it into C# 4.0, but the problem is that it implies working on my own compilated version of System.Web.Mvc which is not an option. I'm currently trying to migrate to MVC 2 but I still have issues... Waiting for your suggestions...

  • What's slowing for loops/assignment vs. C?

    I have a collection of PHP scripts that are extremely CPU intensive, juggling millions of calculations across hundreds of simultaneous users. I'm trying to find a way to speed up the internals of PHP variable assignment, and looping sequences vs C. Although PHP is obviously loosely typed, is there any way/extension to specifically assign type (assign, not cast, which seems even more expensive) in a C-style fashion? Here's what I mean. This is some dummy code in C: #include <stdio.h> int main() { unsigned long add=0; for(unsigned long x=0;x<100000000;x++) { add = x*59328409238; } printf("x is %ld\n",add); } Pretty self-explanatory -- it loops 100 million times, multiples each iteration by an arbitrary number of some 59 billion, assigns it to a variable and prints it out. On my Macbook, compiling it and running it produced: lees-macbook-pro:Desktop lee$ time ./test2 x is 5932840864471590762 real 0m0.266s user 0m0.253s sys 0m0.002s Pretty darn fast! A similar script in PHP 5.3 CLI... <?php for($i=0;$i<100000000;$i++){ $a=$i*59328409238; } echo $a."\n"; ?> ... produced: lees-macbook-pro:Desktop lee$ time /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/php test3.php 5.93284086447E+18 real 0m22.837s user 0m22.110s sys 0m0.078s Over 22 seconds vs 0.2! I realize PHP is doing a heck of a lot more behind the scenes than this simple C program - but is there any way to make the PHP internals to behave more 'natively' on primitive types and loops?

  • How does VS 2005 provide history across all TFS Team Projects when tf.exe cannot?

    In Visual Studio 2005, in the TFS Source Control Explorer, these is a top-level node for the TFS Server itself, with a child node for each Team Project. Right-clicking either the server node or the node for a Team Project gives a context menu on which there is a View History item. Selecting this gives you a History window showing the last 200 or so changesets, either for the specific Team Project chosen, or across all Team Projects. It is this history across all Team Projects that I am wondering about. The command-line tf.exe history command provides (as I understand it) basically the same functionality as is provided by the VS TFS Source Control plug-in. But I cannot work out how to get tf.exe history to provide this across-all-Team-Projects history. At a command line, supposing I have C:\ mapped as the root of my workspace, and Foo, Bar, and Baz as Team Projects, I can do C:\> tf history Foo /recursive /stopafter:200 to get the last 200 changesets that affected Team Project Foo; or from within a Team Project folder C:\Bar> tf history *.* /recursive /stopafter:200 which does the same thing for Team Project Bar - note that the wildcard *.* is allowed here. However, none of these work (each gives the error message shown): C:\> tf history /recursive /stopafter:200 The history command takes exactly one item C:\> tf history *.* /recursive /stopafter:200 Unable to determine the source control server C:\> tf history *.* /server:servername /recursive /stopafter:200 Unable to determine the workspace I don't see an option in the docs for tf for specifying a workspace; it seems to only want to determine it from the current folder. So what is VS 2005 doing? Is it internally doing a history on each Team Project in turn and then sticking the results together?? note also that I have tried with Power Tools; tfpt history from the command line gives exactly the same error messages seen here

I am new to SP development, and am already bewildered by the number of different versions of SP, and the VS add-ons. This particular problem has come up, which highlights my confusion. What's happened? Why has my default Web Part got a different signature to the authors?

  • Properties vs. Fields: Need help grasping the uses of Properties over Fields.

    First off, I have read through a list of postings on this topic and I don't feel I have grasped properties because of what I had come to understand about encapsulation and field modifiers (private, public..ect). One of the main aspects of C# that I have come to learn is the importance of data protection within your code by the use of encapsulation. I 'thought' I understood that to be because of the ability of the use of the modifiers (private, public, internal, protected). However, after learning about properties I am sort of torn in understanding not only properties uses, but the overall importance/ability of data protection (what I understood as encapsulation) within C#. To be more specific, everything I have read when I got to properties in C# is that you should try to use them in place of fields when you can because of: 1) they allow you to change the data type when you can't when directly accessing the field directly. 2) they add a level of protection to data access However, from what I 'thought' I had come to know about the use of field modifiers did #2, it seemed to me that properties just generated additional code unless you had some reason to change the type (#1) - because you are (more or less) creating hidden methods to access fields as opposed to directly. Then there is the whole modifiers being able to be added to Properties which further complicates my understanding for the need of properties to access data. I have read a number of chapters from different writers on "properties" and none have really explained a good understanding of properties vs. fields vs. encapsulation (and good programming methods). Can someone explain: 1) why I would want to use properties instead of fields (especially when it appears I am just adding additional code 2) any tips on recognizing the use of properties and not seeing them as simply methods (with the exception of the get;set being apparent) when tracing other peoples code? 3) Any general rules of thumb when it comes to good programming methods in relation to when to use what? Thanks and sorry for the long post - I didn't want to just ask a question that has been asked 100x without explaining why I am asking it again.

  • NUnit for VS has suddenly bombed.. Anyone else experience this?

    I'm getting the following set of errors in a project, that previously worked fine, from NUnit for VS when I try to run either individual or all of the tests in a given solution. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.ApplicationTests\bin\Debug\Application.ApplicationTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.FileDetectorTests\bin\Debug\FileDetectorTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.PresentationTests\bin\Debug\Application.PresentationTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.DomainTests\bin\Debug\Application.DomainTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. I've verified that each project is setup with the appropriate ProjectTypeGuids for a test project in the Project file. I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling NUnit for VS, but have had no luck. Does anyone have any advice as to how I might start troubleshooting this? If I open each individual test project outside of the main solution (that includes all projects, by the way,) and save it as it's own solution, they run just fine. Nothing of note has changed since this stopped working. Thanks! Ian

  • VS 2008 debugger: How does it decide what Cassini port to run a web service under?

    I have a VS 2008 solution that includes a web site and a web service. I'm developing both at once, and it's helpful to be able to debug from one into the other. It occasionally can't find the web service. If I look in the web.config, I find the port number it's looking at is not the port number it auto-runs the service in when I use the debugger. For example, the web.config reference says something like: add key="mynamespace.mywebservice" value="http://localhost:55765/mywebservice.asmx" When I hover over the Cassini port icon, I find that the web service is running in port 55382 (or some other non-55765 port). No wonder it can't find it. Is there a way to enforce that the port number it runs under is the one specified in the web config? And if it's not using the web config port number to figure out where to run it... where does it decide? I know in VS2005, there was a way to specify the port number to use when debugging, but I can't find that anywhere in the web service project in VS 2008. This is really going to cause problems as more developers come on to this project - how can I fix it? Deleting and re-adding the web services to the project fixes it, but I'd literally have to do it a couple times a day, not an ideal solution.

  • Are SQL Reporting Services Report Parameters deprecated in VS.NET 2010?

    We use an Reporting Services inside an ASP.NET web application. (We have an *.rdlc which is presented to the ReportViewer web control in our page). Our ASPX page wires up a few report parameters in code: var parameters = new List<ReportParameter>(); parameters.Add(new ReportParameter("StoreAddress", InvoiceStoreAddress)); parameters.Add(new ReportParameter("LogoURL", InvoiceLogoURL)); parameters.Add(new ReportParameter("StoreName", InvoiceStoreName)); ReportViewer1.LocalReport.SetParameters(parameters); These are just general parameters that are passed to the report, instead of hooking it up to a data source. Recently, we upgraded to VS.NET 2010. We upgraded the *.rdlc to the newest version and also upgraded the ReportViewer control used by ASP.NET. Everything works as it did before. However, I now want to add a new report parameter to my *.rdlc. I typically right-clicked on the top left corner and clicked on "Report Parameters" to add it. With the new VS.NET, I cannot find this option anywhere - it is not even in the report properties. Where did it go? Are the deprecating this feature? How should I be passing some general parameters now?

  • Advantage of WPF app vs Winform for business apps?

    I know asp.net and winform development. I am not the type of developer who jumps into a new technology just because it's new. It needs to give me extra benefits like higher productivity. What are the advantages of WPF over Winforms for pure business apps? I am not interested in the extra eye candy, animation, gradients, image display effects and so on which WPF provides. The business apps are for data entry, data reporting and maybe some charts and static display of photos. How will WPF help in these apps? Better richer data binding? WinForm is a mature proven technology and I like the fact I can do everything in Visual Studio vs multiple IDE's for WPF (VS & Blend family). Plus I think WPF doesn't have as rich data binding controls like their Winform counterparts (DataGridView..etc). AFAIK, Microsoft will still support Winforms for many years. Try to convince someone like me to switch.

    Hi all, First - This is not meant to be a 'which is better, ignorant nonionic war thread'... But rather, I generally need help in making an architecture decision / argument to put forward to my boss. Skipping the details - I simply just would love to know and find the results of anyone who has done some performance comparisons of Shell vs [Insert General Purpose Programming Language (interpreted) here), such as C# or Java... Surprisingly, I have spent some time on Google on searching here to not find any of this data. Has anyone ever done these comparisons, in different use-cases; hitting a database like in a XYX # of loops doing different types of SQL (Oracle pref, but MSSQL would do) queries such as any of the CRUD ops - and also not hitting database and just regular 50k loop type comparison doing different types of calculations, and things of that nature? In particular - for right now, I need to a comparison of hitting an Oracle DB from a shell script vs, lets say C# (again, any GPPL thats interpreted would be fine, even the higher level ones like Python). But I also need to know about standard programming calculations / instructions/etc... Before you ask 'why not just write a quick test yourself? The answer is: I've been a Windows developer my whole life/career and have very limited knowledge of Shell scripting - not to mention *nix as a whole.... So asking the question on here from the more experienced guys would be grealty beneficial, not to mention time saving as we are in near perputual deadline crunch as it is ;).   • Can a pc with a 1.2 ghz dual core run VS 2013? [on hold]

    Edit: This question is about a tool used for programming, Microsoft Visual Studio 2013. I already read the minimum requirements for VS 2013 before I posted or I wouldn't have asked the question. I searched on the web for an answer for a few hours before posting. Why should I go out and spend $400 on a laptop if I can spend less than $100 and use it to learn how to program? In the context of the question it is clear I was not asking for advice on what laptop to buy and it was also clear I was not asking for someone to walk me through the system requirements of VS 2013. This is a vast community and I was wondering if someone in this vast community would have experience in dealing with my question. In other words has anyone ever tried anything like it? If I had an old computer sitting around I would have tested it. At the moment all I have is a friend's Chromebook I'm borrowing. End Edit. I know the requirements for Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 state 1.6 ghz processor. I'm looking at getting a laptop for school and I found one that is old but cheap and would work for college. The Dell D430 I'm looking at getting has a 1.2ghz Core 2 Duo CPU, 80GB HD, 2GB RAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium. It's refurbished. I can get it for less than most phone's cost and from a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher. I know it's not a skyrim rig but it's lightweight and can handle being a college laptop and doing word processing. Would Visual Studio 2013 run at all? If it is slower I'm not concerned. I just want to know if it would work and compile my assignments and run them? I'd be using this laptop for doing assignments and learning programming languages not for coding the next social media sensation.

  • Block access to certain websites from other computers on shared internet connection

    I have very little knowledge about networking. I have an internet connection on my PC (running Windows XP). I've enabled internet connection sharing to other computers on my network connected using a WIFI router. I want to block use of GMail (in general, specific domains) from other computers, but should be able to access them from my own machine. I can't edit my hosts file because my machine too would lose access. I guess I need to configure my wireless router for that. But I have no idea how to do so. My wireless router is a Zyxel P-660HW-T1 v2. I'd appreciate any pointers.

Now my question is the following: what makes this class being the first class to get called when VS starts? In other words, why this class gets active and it runs as of some code instantiate an object of this class type? Hosts (x2) have 8 pNICs and while I usually reserve 2 pNICs for iSCSI per host (and 2 for VM, 2 for management, 2 for vMotion, staggered across adapters), these extra ports on the SAN have me wondering if storage I/O would be significantly improved with 2 additional NICs per host, or if the limitations of the vmkernel/initiator would prevent the additional multipaths from ever being realized. I'm not seeing alot of 4 pNIC iSCSI implementations per host; 2 is the de facto standard from what I've read/seen online. I could and probably will do some I/O testing, but just wondering if there's a "wall" that someone else has discovered long ago (i.e. before 10GbE) that makes a 4 NIC iSCSI per host setup somewhat pointless. Just to clarify: I'm not looking for a how-to, but an explanation (link to paper, VMWare recommendation, benchmark, etc.) as to why 2-NIC configurations are the norm vs. 4-NIC iSCSI configurations. i.e. storage vendor limitations, VMKernel/initiator limitations, etc.

  • Finding a Relative Path in .NET

    Here’s a nice and simple path utility that I’ve needed in a number of applications: I need to find a relative path based on a base path. So if I’m working in a folder called c:\temp\templates\ and I want to find a relative path for c:\temp\templates\subdir\test.txt I want to receive back subdir\test.txt. Or if I pass c:\ I want to get back ..\..\ – in other words always return a non-hardcoded path based on some other known directory. I’ve had a routine in my library that does this via some lengthy string parsing routines, but ran into some Uri processing today that made me realize that this code could be greatly simplified by using the System.Uri class instead. Here’s the simple static method: /// <summary> /// Returns a relative path string from a full path based on a base path /// provided. /// </summary> /// <param name="fullPath">The path to convert. Can be either a file or a directory</param> /// <param name="basePath">The base path on which relative processing is based.   • SQL SERVER – Template Browser – A Very Important and Useful Feature of SSMS

    Let me start today’s blog post with a direction question. How many of you have ever used Template Browser? Template Browser is a very important and useful feature of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Every time when I am talking about SQL Server there is always someone comes up with the question, why there is no step by step procedure included in SSMS for features. Honestly every time I get this question, the question I ask back is How many of you have ever used Template Browser? I think the answer to this question is most of the time either no or we have not heard of the feature. One of the people asked me back – have you ever written about it on your blog? I have not yet written about it. Basically there is nothing much to write about it. It is pretty straight forward feature, like any other feature and it is indeed difficult to elaborate. However, I will try to give a quick introduction to this feature. Templates are like a quick cheat sheet or quick reference. Templates are available to create objects like databases, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, statistics, and functions. Templates are also available for Analysis Services as well. The template scripts contain parameters to help you customize the code. You can Replace Template Parameters dialog box to insert values into the script. Additionally users can create new custom templates as well with folder structure. To open a template from Template Explorer Go to View menu >> Template Explorer or type CTRL+ALT+L. You will find a list of categories click on any category and expand the folder structure. For our sample example let us expand Index Folder. In this folder you will notice the various T-SQL Scripts. These scripts can be opened by double click or can be dragged to editor area and modified as needed. Sample template is now available in the query editor area with all the necessary parameter place folder. You can replace the same parameter by typing either CTRL+SHIFT+M or by going to Query Menu >> Specify Values for Template Parameters. In this screen it will show  Specify Values for Template Parameters dialog box, accept the value or replace it with a new value. This will now get your script ready to go. Check it one more time and change the script to fit your requirement. I personally use template explorer for two things. First one is obviously for templates but the hidden one and an important one is for learning new features and T-SQL commands. There is so much to learn and so little time. I have a maintenance bug in a VS 2008 project, and have been told that I cannot upgrade the project file. Is there a way for me to make the changes I need to make within VS10 without upgrading the project (including compiling, using the debugger, etc.), or do I need to re-install VS 2008?
