  Whenever I attempt to make a record for *.schneiderdonnelly.com.au and CNAME it, I get two errors: You can't mix CNAME/MX records together using the same hostname. Domain root's cannot be CNAME's, however you can web-forward this record to www.schneiderdonnelly.com.au instead for the same effect. I've read it's possible so why can't I make it work? • Return to the old C days.

  Long back I used to program on C and than VB exploitation changed the career path. After VB came the .NET that proved to be a HoneyPot of Microsoft for old VB programmers and frustrated programmers of other hard to learn languages. The label on this HoneyPot was: "Getting things done." I now want to contribute to the Linux and other GNU projects. I feel whatever programming language you learn today, but if programming is your bread-and-butter, you must remain in touch with C. Many things have changed now. From the old Turbo-C for DOS to the present ...? Please advise me how to get back on the C track again. Reading again whole thing, chapter-by-chapter is not possible now, but I can learn by writing small utilities type of things, but sure GUI based. And yes, I hope, learning is going to be easy now with so many live forums and active community spots like StackOverflow etc.

• Are there any guidelines for laying out screen "real estate?"

  I'm wondering if there is any information about creating a decent page layout so that your website will appeal to users of all resolutions. For example, the optimal width for pages. It seems like on my resolution, most websites have their content centered and covers about 80% of the page, which is easy on the eyes. Or maybe the height of the website's logo/header -- some sites I stumble upon have a huge logo with links or navigation under it, making it so that I need to scroll down to see the actual content, like articles or images (these sites don't keep me for very long). I understand that every user is different and may have browser extensions, page zoom or may be running some ancient system that displays in 640x480. I'm not looking for a "best" solution, but rather, some guidelines about designing to accommodate different resolutions. Basically, how can I make sure that I don't design a page where a paragraph might display in several easy-to-read lines on my resolution, but it turns into a single line on a 1920x1080 resolution and makes it hard for the user to follow?

• Flash isn't working in Chrome on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 fresh install

  I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit last night on my laptop and installed Google Chrome ver. 8.0.552.237. So far flash works on Firefox and Chromium, but not at all on Chrome. I did the sevenmachines install for flashplugin64 and that worked for firefox and chromium. Anyone know how to make it work on Chrome? I really would prefer to use Chrome over Chromium, but if it's not an easy fix I can switch. I'm not too Ubuntu literate, but I can figure things out if necessary. (In short, long explanations are not necessary).

• Lubuntu with only Ubuntu's workspace/tiling features

  I searched around for a long time but found nothing. I am moving from Ubuntu to Lubuntu. Everything is great (I am okay with the bland style) except for three features that I use regularly in Ubuntu. 1) Win+w / Win+s zooms out to see an overview of the current workspace and all the workspaces respectively. 2) Ctrl+Alt+num which puts the current application in a specific portion of the workspace. 3) Snap to edge of workspace. How would I get those three features onto Lubuntu? Would that cancel out the benefit of Lubuntu, so I should just stick with Ubuntu (or any distro you can recommend)? Thank you.

  So it’s been a really long time since I consistently blogged on my previous ASP.NET blog (and, let’s be honest, it wasn’t that consistent to begin with!)  With the mainstream use of microblogging sites like Facebook and Twitter, I’ve been able to post more frequent updates (http://www.facebook.com/scott.vanvliet & http://twitter.com/scottvanvliet) but haven’t really authored any good content lately. Well, I decided it’s time for me to try again! • Ubuntu Software Center does not proceed from applying changes

  I have a problem with Ubuntu software center. It is "Searching" and "applying changes" for long period of time. I tired to cancel by clicking cross(X) mark. However, it is now stuck at "cancelling". • Ensure we're found in Facebook search for both full & abbreviated company names?

  We have a client with a facebook page, let's say his company is called Bob Roberts Super Widgets. And if you search in Facebook for Bob Roberts Super Widgets then up he pops. But the shorthand he's commonly known by is BR Super Widgets and indeed the website we've created for him is br-super-widgets.com. In Facebook, searching for BR Super Widgets doesn't show up our Mr Bob. We don't have a lot of Facebook expertise, so asking for help here. Does anyone know how to ensure you're found in Facebook search for both short and long company names? Have found this this similar question in the Facebook forum but the poor old questioner never got a response.

• How do I approach large companies if I have a killer mobile game idea?

  I have an idea for a game that has potential, but I'm not a programmer. How do I tell this to development companies without having my idea stolen? All I want from the company is for somebody to watch a three minute long video presentation about my idea and if they see potential in it then we can talk about the details. I have already sent an e-mail to several big companies that have the expertise needed to code the game, they haven't answered me. Actually the idea is nothing fancy, no 3D, but fun and unique.

• Row Count Plus Transformation

  As the name suggests we have taken the current Row Count Transform that is provided by Microsoft in the Integration Services toolbox and we have recreated the functionality and extended upon it. There are two things about the current version that we thought could do with cleaning up Lack of a custom UI You have to type the variable name yourself In the Row Count Plus Transformation we solve these issues for you. Another thing we thought was missing is the ability to calculate the time taken between components in the pipeline. An example usage would be that you want to know how many rows flowed between Component A and Component B and how long it took. Again we have solved this issue. Credit must go to Erik Veerman of Solid Quality Learning for the idea behind noting the duration. We were looking at one of his packages and saw that he was doing something very similar but he was using a Script Component as a transformation. Our philosophy is that if you have to write or Copy and Paste the same piece of code more than once then you should be thinking about a custom component and here it is. The Row Count Plus Transformation populates variables with the values returned from; Counting the rows that have flowed through the path Returning the time in seconds between when it first saw a row come down this path and when it saw the final row. It is possible to leave both these boxes blank and the component will still work.   All input columns are passed through the transformation unaltered, you are not permitted to change or add to the inputs or outputs of this component. Optionally you can set the component to fire an event, which happens during the PostExecute phase of the execution. This can be useful to improve visibility of this information, such that it is captured in package logging, or can be used to drive workflow in the case of an error event. Properties Property Data Type Description OutputRowCountVariable String The name of the variable into which the amount of row read will be passed (Optional). OutputDurationVariable String The name of the variable into which the duration in seconds will be passed. (Optional). EventType RowCountPlusTransform.EventType The type of event to fire during post execute, included in which are the row count and duration values. RowCountPlusTransform.EventType Enumeration Name Value Description None 0 Do not fire any event. Information 1 Fire an Information event. Warning 2 Fire a Warning event. Error 3 Fire an Error event. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. For 2005/2008 Only - Finally you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Row Count Plus Transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations, and this component requires a minimum of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1. Downloads The Row Number Transformation is available for SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 (includes R2) and SQL Server 2012. Please choose the version to match your SQL Server version, or you can install multiple versions and use them side by side if you have more than one version of SQL Server installed. If you get an error when you try and use the component along the lines of The component could not be added to the Data Flow task. Please verify that this component is properly installed.  ... The data flow object "Konesans ..." is not installed correctly on this computer, this usually indicates that the internal cache of SSIS components needs to be updated. This is held by the SSIS service, so you need restart the the SQL Server Integration Services service. You can do this from the Services applet in Control Panel or Administrative Tools in Windows. You can also restart the computer if you prefer. You may also need to restart any current instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. • How do I overcome paralysis by analysis when coding?

  When I start a new project, I often times immediately start thinking about the details of implementation. "Where am I gonna put the DataBaseHandler? How should I use it? Should classes that want to use it extend from some Abstract superclass..? Should I an interface? What level of abstraction am I going to use in my class that contains methods for sending requests and parsing data?" I end up stalling for a long time because I want to code for extensibility and reusability. But I feel it almost impossible to get past thinking about how to implement perfectly. And then, if I try to just say "screw it, just get it done!", I hit a brick wall pretty quickly because my code isn't organized, I mixed levels of abstractions, etc. What are some techniques/methods you have for launching into a new project while also setting up a logical/modular structure that will scale well?

• Open source level editor for HTML5 platform game?

  A natty GUI editor is very helpful to create level map. I want to use some open-source choices rather than build my own from scratch. I found Tiled Map Editor but it doesn't work for what I want. Though I'm building HTML5 game, I don't have to use a HTML5 level editor as long as it can output well-formatted map files which my javascript can read. Edit: Sorry for the confusion. Tiled does not work for me because to make the player perform a 'tricky' jump, sometimes I want to set the distance between two platforms to, say, 7/3 or 8/3 tiles. But in Tiled I get only 2 or 3. If Tiled can do this, please teach me.

  When I first got Ubuntu and got used to it, I decided to install lots of packages, and I overwhelmed the update manager. I had to interrupt it, because the download time was crazy long. That was 2 years ago. I haven't been able to upgrade anything since then. But now, some things I need will not work in my 2-year-old version of Firefox. I want to cancel all of the package installations that I started, and was not able to finish, and I need to upgrade Firefox. What should I do?

• Which tool to use for "home banking"?

  I would like to manage my bank accounts in a secure manner on Ubuntu. I saw several applications in the Software Centre, but I don't know which one to choose. I don't need fancy features like stock options. I just have regular accounts which I want to follow, I don't want complicated stuff. As bank data are quite sensitive, I would highly prefer an application that does encryption of the data. Though, if you have a really cool app but it does not have this feature, as long as it offers to store the data in one dedicated place, I could do with encrypting that place. So what tool do you use that could fit my needs?

• Intel NUC Video Blur

  I recently purchased the D34010WYKH NUC and I figured this would be a great time to make the jump to a Linux based system. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, and I'm having an issue with video rendering that is driving me mad. Essentially videos (all 1080p mkv files) appear to be slowly blurring, and its most noticeable when the camera remains on a scene for a long period of time. Then all of a sudden the video will correct the blur and the image will be sharp, only to begin happening again followed by more sudden and noticeable corrections. I have seen the exact same issue in both VLC and XBMC and across several different videos. I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers, and searched the web but to be honest I'm not sure how to accurately describe this problem. I'm also quite new to the OS, so my experience tinkering is limited. Has anyone experienced this type of issue before? Can it be resolved?

• Learning Python is good?

  Recently I have seen some videos from MIT on computer programming topics. I found it's really worth watching. Especially the concepts of algorithms and fundamental stuffs. The programs were written and explained in Python. I never had looked into this language before as I learned and doing stuffs with C/C++ programming. But the cleanliness and better readability of syntax attracted me. Of course as a C++ programmer for long time it's the most readable language for me. Also I heard Python library contains solid algorithms and data-structures implementations. Can you share your experience in this language?

  I have two instances where I'd like to display information in a "justified" alignment - but I don't care if the values are switched in order. One example being displaying the usernames of people online: Anton Brother68 Commissar Dougheater Elflord Foobar Goop Hoo Iee Joo Rearranging them we could get exactly 22 characters long on each line: Anton Brother68 Foobar Commissar Elflord Goop Dougheater Hoo Iee Joo This is kind of a knapsack, except seems like there ought to be a P solution since I don't care about perfection, and I have multiple lines. Second instance is identical, except instead of names and character count I would be displaying random images and use their width.

• Java regex patterns - compile time constants or instance members?

  Currently, I have a couple of singleton objects where I'm doing matching on regular expressions, and my Patterns are defined like so: class Foobar { private final Pattern firstPattern = Pattern.compile("some regex"); private final Pattern secondPattern = Pattern.compile("some other regex"); // more Patterns, etc. private Foobar() {} public static Foobar create() { /* singleton stuff */ } } But I was told by someone the other day that this is bad style, and Patterns should always be defined at the class level, and look something like this instead: class Foobar { private static final Pattern FIRST_PATTERN = Pattern.compile("some regex"); private static final Pattern SECOND_PATTERN = Pattern.compile("some other regex"); // more Patterns, etc. private Foobar() {} public static Foobar create() { /* singleton stuff */ } } The lifetime of this particular object isn't that long, and my main reason for using the first approach is because it doesn't make sense to me to hold on to the Patterns once the object gets GC'd. Any suggestions / thoughts?
