• Legally, can I re reuse code for different customers?

  The company I work for develops custom factory automation applications for multiple customers. Even though each application is custom, they contain common code which is re-used across projects. One of the customers is now looking for the source code to their application, which has caused a major storm in the company. Management have decided that we can't give them the source to the shared components as they are used by other customers. I've been asked to modify the shared components 'enough' so as they aren't common. So my questions are: 1) Legally, should there be any problem with re-using common components for different customer? 2) If I really need to modify the common components, then how much is 'enough' ? (I know this sucks, but I either do this or hand in my notice). Oh yeah, and my company has no license in place with any of these customers.

I've been lucky enough to come in to a company in the oil business from the beginning, developing software for relatively new and unused technology. Long before I even got this job, I've wanted to start my own consulting firm. • Letters of recommendation from customers? [closed]

  I am leaving my job soon and am looking for letters of recommendation. My problem is, I've worked more closely with my customers than my project lead (not technical) or manager (the customers usually talk to me first and rarely even if CC my lead if I don't). So in this case, the customer has seen my work more closely than my leadership and can better attest to my abilities, communication skills, and performance. Are recommendations from customers viable, or will they be largely dismissed? Secondarily, can they be more useful than letters from managers that don't really know your work at all? Note: I already have a letter from the only coworker I've really worked with, but I'm looking to get more than one for good measure.

  I am updating a site for a training company. Each course has its own page, on which the dates of upcoming courses are listed. At present, the customer manually fills in a booking form with all the relevant information, including the course name, venue, and dates. What I would like to implement is a system whereby, when the user clicks the relevant date, the booking form (which is on a separate page) is automatically populated with the course name and date. Is that possible? Would it be simpler to have a form on each page and then have just the date and venue automatically filled in on click?

  I have Windows 8 Release Customer Preview on my laptop. I tried to install Ubuntu on it with Ubuntu Windows installer (I have always used this to install, although that was on Windows 7), it installs and asks to reboot, then immediately Windows 8 boots up. I do not have the option to choose what OS to boot. How can I boot to Ubuntu? VM is not exactly what I would like to use, but it is an option, however a last resort. Any help?

  I just installed SharePoint 2010 on my Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with SQL Server 2008. Everything is installed on this single server, and I configured SharePoint 2010 as described here: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/fromthefield/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=112 Everything installed correct, and the SQL databases were created. But when I try to access the administration site through http://server:47632/_admin/adminconfigintro.aspx, I get the following exception: [HttpException] at System.Web.Util.FileUtil.CheckSuspiciousPhysicalPath(String physicalPath) at System.Web.CachedPathData.GetConfigPathData(String configPath) at System.Web.CachedPathData.GetConfigPathData(String configPath) at System.Web.CachedPathData.GetConfigPathData(String configPath) at System.Web.HttpContext.GetFilePathData() at System.Web.Configuration.CustomErrorsSection.GetSettings(HttpContext context, Boolean canThrow) at System.Web.HttpResponse.ReportRuntimeError(Exception e, Boolean canThrow, Boolean localExecute) at System.Web.HttpRuntime.FinishRequest(HttpWorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context, Exception e) The same error occurs when accessing http://server:47632/. Or perhaps I'm just not understanding what they're saying is wrong. At first I thought it might be because I was using Wix 3.5, so just to be sure I tried using Wix 3.0, but I get the same error. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

• Blackberry Menu from native blackberry application

  I have an application that inserts an ApplicationMenuItem into the native blackberry contacts menu. I can get this to work just fine. Now my question is how would I change or remove that ApplicationMenuItem based on the contact that i am highlighted on? Would I need to use a GlobalEventListener? I assume overriding makeMenu can only be done for menus on my own screens and not the native contacts screen?

• Removing expired certificates from LDS (new ver of ADAM)

  Hi all. This is my situation: We are in the process of replacing a certificate store currently hosted on Sun's iPlanet with Microsoft's Lightweight Directory Services (new version of ADAM with Server 2008). These certificates have been imported into LDS into an application partition (say o=myorg, C=AU). Under this structure I have around 40,000 OU's each one representing a customer under each customers OU are one or more user (iNetOrg) objects (around 60,000 in all). In each user are one or more certificates in the UserCertificate attribute. A combination of in-house written application code and proprietory PKI code reads and publishes these certficates to validate financial transactions. As the LDAP path of the certificates is stored within the customer certificates (and within the application code) and there is zero appetite for changing any of the code, I have had to pick up the iPlanet directory as a whole and dump it in LDS in the same structure. (I will not be using or hosting a Microsoft CA, just implementing an LDAP compliant directory to host these certificates) We have fully tested the application using the data in LDS and everything works fine - here is my dilema and question (finally, phew!) There was no process put in place for removing revoked or expired certificates, consequently the vast majority of the data is completely useless, the system has been running for about 8 years! I have done a quick analysis and I estimate that at least 80% of the data is no longer valid. As I am taking on responsibility for managing the directory I would like to start with a clean directory. Does anyone have any idea how I can cleanup these expired certificates. I am not a highly experienced scripter but have some background in VB. I have been researching the use of CAPICOM and have a feeling this may be able to be used but in exactly what way I am not sure?? I would prefer to write a script that I could specify an expiration date (say any certs that expired prior to 2010) then run against the LDS paritition. This way I can reuse the script periodically to cleanup the directory (as mentioned above - I have no way to adjust the applications that are writing the certs, this is with a third party). Another, less attractive, alternative is to massage the LDIF file (2.7 million lines!) to rip the certs out prior to the import Any help and advice MUCH appreciated. Cheers Jon
