How to handle server-client requests

Currently I'm working on a Server-Client system which will be the backbone of my application. I have to find the best way to send requests and handle them on the server-side. The server-side should be able to handle requests like this one: getPortfolio -i 2 -d all In an old project I decided to send such a request as string and the server application had to look up the first part of the string ("getPortfolio"). Afterwards the server application had to find the correct method in a map which linked the methods with the the first part of the string ("getPortfolio"). The second part ("-i 2 -d all") got passed as parameter and the method itself had to handle this string/parameter. I doubt that this is the best solution in order to handle many different requests. I know that there are the SUBSCRIBE and NOTIFY commands but I have found no event package for signaling incoming calls. Background: for a SIP-capable telephony system, I would like to provide an application that displays information about the caller (e.g. name, address, contracts, etc.) when the phone rings. I'm coding up a small Vista/7 sidebar gadget for our web based employee schedule system and I've run into a Javascript problem that my Google-FU can't solve. I can't figure out how to fill in a login form from the client. I'm creating a new ActiveXObject, navigating to the site, but lost as to where to go from here. var conn = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); conn.open("POST", "url", false); conn.send(null); Can access the form from the ActiveXObject based on the form id? I'd also assume I'm going to need to change a few headers for a POST vs. a GET? Thanks for any tips or links to references! I can't seem to find much and JavaScript isn't my forte.

How to determine IP used by client connecting to INADDR_ANY listener socket in C

I have a network server application written in C, the listener is bound using INADDR_ANY so it can accept connections via any of the IP addresses of the host on which it is installed. I need to determine which of the server's IP addresses the client used when establishing its connection - actually I just need to know whether they connected via the loopback address 127.0.0.1 or not. I want to clean things out and refactor the code out completely, so there is a clear seperation of concerns. I am looking at MVC or some other suitable design pattern in order to achieve this. I would like to get recommendations from people who have walked this road before - Do I use MVP or MVC (or another pattern)? What is/are the best practices for undertaking something like this (i.e. useful steps/checks) ?

Unable to send an associative array in JSON format in Zend to client

Hi, In one of my actions in a controller, I'm using the json view helper to send back a response to an ajax request. On the client side I alert the data that is passed to the success callback function. It works fine as long as the response is a number or an array with default keys. Once I try to send an associative array, it alerts with [object Object]. Server code: $childArray = array('key'=>'value'); $this->_helper->json($childArray); javascript: function displayChildren(data){ alert(data); } ... $.ajax({ url: "/po/add", dataType: "json", data: {format: "json"}, success: displayChildren }); I have no idea what am I doing wrong here, so any help would be appreciated...

Securing database keys for client-side processing

I have a tree of information which is sent to the client in a JSON object. In that object, I don't want to have raw IDs which are coming from the database. I thought of making a hash of the id and a field in the object (title, for example) or a salt, but I'm worried that this might have a serious effect on processing overhead. SELECT * FROM `things` where md5(concat(id,'some salt')) = md5('1some salt'); Is there a standard practice for obscuring IDs in this kind of situation?

Proper mechanism for sending PHP errors to the client

Greetings, I was trying to discover a proper way to send captured errors or business logic exceptions to the client in an Ajax-PHP system. In my case, the browser needs to react differently depending on whether a request was successful or not. However in all the examples I've found, only a simple string is reported back to the browser in both cases. Eg: if (something worked) echo "Success!"; else echo "ERROR: that failed"; So when the browser gets back the Ajax response, the only way to know if an error occurred would be to parse the string (looking for 'error' perhaps). This seems clunky. Is there a better/proper way to send back the Ajax response & notify the browser of an error? Thank you.

Are sessions modifiable by the client/user?

In my PHP Web-App I use sessions to store the user's data. For exmaple, if a user logs in, then an instance of the User class is generated and stored in a Session. I have access levels associated with each user to determine their privileges. Store the user in a session by: $_SESSION['currentUser'] = new User($_POST['username']); For example: if($_SESSION['currentUser'] -> getAccessLevel() == 1) { //allow administration functions } where getAccessLevel() is simply a get method in the User class that returns the _accesslevel member variable. Is this secure? Or can the client somehow modify their access level through session manipulation of some sort?

Hello Friends, I am writing one simple web page with bunch of textboxes and a button control. Now when user finished editing the values on this text boxes user has to click the button and this button invoke heavily process intensive algorithm on server side code based on the data received from client (Textboxes) And it could some time takes up to 30 to 45 minutes to complete the whole operation so the current thread is still inside the button click event handler function. That background task only provides one event, and the web page subscribes to it to get some text data after each stage of processing I was wandering if there is any way I can keep user up-to-date with what is the current progress on that background task. I have div element to print the current status information So I am looking for some sort of reverse mechanism then "get" and "post". I have read some articles on the Comet (programming) but I can't find any easy or definitive answer Thanks in advance

Methods for breaking up content client-side into multiple "pages"

I have a long HTML text-only article formatted with paragraph tags. What I'd like to do is break this content into N number of divs so that I can create individual pages. So, for instance, on an iPad/iPhone, instead of reading one long page the user could swipe right/left to navigate to pages. My initial javascript attempts have been somewhat convoluted: creating an array of the text, measuring line-heights, device window heights, adding closing/opening paragraph tags and the end/beginning of pages. Thoughts on a good way to approach this? I will not have access to server-side processing, this has to be a client-side solution.

Issuew while checking in in TFS client explorer 2005

We have recently installed Team Explorer client for 2005 and TFS server 2008.. We have been using VS2005 and VSS earlier. To connect to TFS server 2008 we have installed a hotfix VS80sp1-KB932544-X86-ENU.exe. Everything has been setup well. However I noticed that when the files are checked out and u make some modifications , during checking in resolve confict dialog box asking to merge changes done by others isn't appearing. Instead the file is getting checked in overwriting the changes done by others. Is there some setting that needs to be done on TFS server 2008? Kindly help.

Downloading file using FTP client in BlackBerry

Password Recovery without sending password via email

So, I've been playing with asp:PasswordRecovery and discovered I really don't like it, for several reasons: 1) Alice's password can be reset even without having access to Alice's email. A security question for password resets mitigates this, but does not really satisfy me. 2) Alice's new password is sent back to her in cleartext. I would rather send her a special link to my page (e.g. a page like example.com/recovery.aspx?P=lfaj0831uefjc), which would let her change her password. I imagine I could do this myself by creating some sort of table of expiring password recovery pages and sending those pages to users who asked for a reset. Somehow those pages could also change user passwords behind the scenes (e.g. by resetting them manually and then using the text of the new password to change the password, since a password cannot be changed without knowing the old one). I'm sure others have had this problem before and that kind of solution strikes me as a little hacky. Is there a better way to do this? An ideal solution does not violate encapsulation by accessing the database directly but instead uses the existing stored procedures within the database...though that may not be possible.

I tried this fix: http://forums.asp.net/p/1016960/1368933.aspx#1368933 and added: public override void VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control control) { return; } But now the errror I get is: VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control)': no suitable method found to override Does anyone have a fix for this? Create combined client side and server side validation in Symfony2

I think it would be very useful to create client side form validation up on the symfony2 Form and Validator components. The best way to do this would be to pass the validation constraints to the form view. With that information it would be possible to make a template that renders a form field to something like this: <div> <label for="form_email">E-Mail</label> <input id="form_email" type="text" name="form[email]" value="" data-validation-constraints='["NotBlank":{},"MinLength":{"limit":6}]' /> </div> The JavaScript part then would be to find all <input> elements that have the data-validation-constraints attribute and create the correct validation for them. To pass the validation constraints to the form view i thought the best way would be to create a form type extension. That's the point of my Question: Is this the correct way? And how is this possible? At the Moment my form type extension looks like this: use Symfony\Component\Form\FormInterface; use Symfony\Component\Form\FormView; use Symfony\Component\Form\FormBuilder; class FieldTypeExtension extends \Symfony\Component\Form\AbstractTypeExtension{ public function getExtendedType(){ return 'field'; } public function buildView(FormView $view, FormInterface $form) { // at this point i didn't find a way to get the // validation constraints out of the $form // the `getAllValidationConstraints` here is just an example $view->set('validation_constraints', $form->getAllValidationConstraints()); } } How can i get all validation constraints applied to one form field out of the FormInterface object?

Reading email address from contacts fails with weird memory issue

Hi all, I'm stumped. I'm trying to get a list of all the email address a person has. I'm using the ABPeoplePickerNavigationController to select the person, which all seems fine. I'm setting my ABRecordRef personDealingWith; from the person argument to - (BOOL)peoplePickerNavigationController:(ABPeoplePickerNavigationController *)peoplePicker shouldContinueAfterSelectingPerson:(ABRecordRef)person property:(ABPropertyID)property identifier:(ABMultiValueIdentifier)identifier { and everything seems fine up till this point. The first time the following code executes, all is well. When subsequently run, I can get issues. First, the code: // following line seems to make the difference (issue 1) // NSLog(@"%d", ABMultiValueGetCount(ABRecordCopyValue(personDealingWith, kABPersonEmailProperty))); // construct array of emails ABMultiValueRef multi = ABRecordCopyValue(personDealingWith, kABPersonEmailProperty); CFIndex emailCount = ABMultiValueGetCount(multi); if (emailCount 0) { // collect all emails in array for (CFIndex i = 0; i < emailCount; i++) { CFStringRef emailRef = ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(multi, i); [emailArray addObject:(NSString *)emailRef]; CFRelease(emailRef); } } // following line also matters (issue 2) CFRelease(multi); If compiled as written, the are no errors or static analysis problems. This crashes with a *** -[Not A Type retain]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x4e9dc60 error. But wait, there's more! I can fix it in either of two ways. Firstly, I can uncomment the NSLog at the top of the function. I get a leak from the NSLog's ABRecordCopyValue every time through, but the code seems to run fine. Also, I can comment out the CFRelease(multi); at the end, which does exactly the same thing. Static compilation errors, but running code. So without a leak, this function crashes. To prevent a crash, I need to haemorrhage memory. Neither is a great solution. Can anyone point out what's going on?

Hello, I want to send EMail from my Website hosted at GoDaddy, and we are using Google Apps for Emails. Regular expression, excluding .. in suffix of email addy

This is homework, I've been working on it for a while, I've done lots of reading and feel I have gotten pretty familiar with regex for a beginner. I am trying to find a regular expression for validating/invalidating a list of emails. There are two addresses which are giving me problems, I can't get them both to validate the correct way at the same time. I've gone through a dozen different expressions that work for all the other emails on the list but I can't get those two at the same time. First, the addresses. [email protected] - invalid [email protected] - valid The part of my expression which validates the suffix I originally started with @.+\\.[[a-z]0-9]+ And had a second pattern for checking some more invalid addresses and checked the email against both patterns, one checked for validity the other invalidity but my professor said he wanted it all in on expression. @[[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+]+ or @[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+ I've tried it written many, many different ways but I'm pretty sure I was just using different syntax to express these two expressions. I know what I want it to do, I want it to match a character class of "character+"."character+"+ The plus sign being at least one. It works for the invalid class when I only allow the character class to repeat one time(and obviously the ip doesn't get matched), but when I allow the character class to repeat itself it matches the second period even thought it isn't preceded by a character. I don't understand why.

Mail function wont send eMail. ERROR

I think i tried to fix this issue fr 3 days now and cant seem to find the problem. I use XAMPP and use this code: <?php $to = "[email protected]"; $subject = "Test mail"; $message = "Hello! This is a simple email message."; $from = "[email protected]"; $headers = "From: $from"; $res= mail($to,$subject,$message,$headers); echo " $res Mail Sent."; ?> when i enter that page i get an error that says: Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set( My php.init file in xampp are as follow: [mail function] ; For Win32 only. ; http://php.net/smtp SMTP = smpt.gmail.com ; http://php.net/smtp-port smtp_port = 25 That is all my codes.
