• Getting search results from Twitter in php

  I'm attempting to put together a little mashup with some twitter APIs. However, the whole area is new to me (I'm more of an embedded developer dabbling). And frustratingly, every tutorial I am trying in Php is either out of date, not doing what it claims to do, it or is broken. Essentially, I just want a nice bit of example code - say, an HTML file, a connection.js for the JQuery magic, and a php file - 'getsearch' which contains the relevant Curl calls to the API to just return the results for a given search term. Followed the tutorial to the letter at http://www.reynoldsftw.com/2009/02/using-jquery-php-ajax-with-the-twitter-api/ and even downloaded the guy's code and chucked it on my webserver, but it just seems to sit there. I'm relatively competent at php and html, but it's the Curl and the JQuery side of things which is new to me, and would appreciate any thoughts, links, or code suggestions. I've attempted reading the API - but even that seems sparse - and several links are broken to their own tutorials, so that's put me off a bit for now.

• Problem with inheritance and List<>

  I have an abstract class called Grouping. I have a subclass called GroupingNNA. public class GroupingNNA : Grouping { // blah blah blah } I have a List that contains items of type GroupingNNA, but is actually declared to contain items of type Grouping. List<Grouping> lstGroupings = new List<Grouping>(); lstGroupings.Add( new GroupingNNA { fName = "Joe" }); lstGroupings.Add( new GroupingNNA { fName = "Jane" }); The Problem: The following LINQ query blows up on me because of the fact that lstGroupings is declared as List< Grouping and fName is a property of GroupingNNA, not Grouping. var results = from g in lstGroupings where r.fName == "Jane" select r; Oh, and this is a compiler error, not a runtime error. Thanks in advance for any help on this one! More Info: Here is the actual method that won't compile. The OfType() fixed the LINQ query, but the compiler doesn't like the fact that I'm trying to return the anonymous type as a List< Grouping. private List<Grouping> ApplyFilterSens(List<Grouping> lstGroupings, string fSens) { // This works now! • IE8 positions DIV overlay wrong way and keeps playing video when it's hidden.

  Hi! Please take a look at: http://www.binarymark.com/Products/PasswordGenerator/default.aspx (the Overview tab, on the diagram). The issue is wjen you click on any of the diagram elements say "Character Groups" all browsers, except IE8 behave well - that is they display the overlay, start playing a video, and when the overlay is closed, the video stops playing an the div is hidden. IE8, on the other hand has two flaws: it positions the overlay way towards the bottom and too much to the right, and even more annoyingly - it keeps playing video in the background even when the overlay div is closed! I use flowplayer.org/tools/overlay/ for overlay. Can you help please? Thanks.

• Checkboxes in ADF are initially null, where I want them to be 0

  I am using ADF in JDeveloper and don´t have any experience with either of the two. Now I´ve run into quite some trouble yet, but for this particular thing I decided to consult the wisom of stackoverflow. The thing is, I have an edit form for an object that contains 3 checkboxes. The checked values are set to 1, unchecked to 0. In my database, the values are NOT NULL, and I want to keep it that way. The thing is, in the edit form, if the user submits the form leaving any boxes unchecked, it will result in an error, because the unchecked box values apparently remain null. Only after checking and then unchecking the boxes again, their values will be '0' rather than null. I've tried some things, including making the attributes mandatory in the domain BCD, but that just gives a bit more neat error message.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! EDIT I made a little progress thanks to the guide provided by Joe, but still run into problems. I changed the values that should be checkboxes in my model, making them BOOLEANs where the table columns are NUMBERs (All are also mandatory and have a default value of 0). This automatically changed the corresponding View Object too. In the Application module, this now works great. It shows checkboxes, a checked one will return 1, an untouched one will return 0. However, I deleted the old form, and inserted a new one using the corresponding Data Control. I gave these values the checkbox type. I still had to edit the bindings (which I think reflects the problem, as this is not the case with, say, a model-level defined LOV) and gave them 1 for checked and 0 for unchecked. However, now apart from the original problem still occurring, also the checkboxes cannot be unchecked after checking, and return 0 when checked (and null when left untouched). Even though this has created new problems, it works correctly in my AM. Does someone know what I'm doing wrong in my Swing form?

  Hi, I am curious, do new compilers use some extra features built into new CPUs such as MMX SSE,3DNow! and so? I mean, in original 8086 there was even no FPU, so compiler that old cannot even use it, but new compilers can, since FPU is part of every new CPU. So, does new compilers use new features of CPU? Or, it should be more right to ask, does new C/C++ standart library functions use new features? Thanks for answer.

• how to convert numbers to alpha numeric system with php

  Im not sure what this is called, which is why im having trouble searching for it. What im looking to do, is take numbers, and convert them to some alpha numeric base so that the number say 5000, wouldnt read 5000, but like G4u or something like that. The idea being to save space and also not make it obvious how many records there are in a given system. Im using php, so if there is something like this built into php even better, but even a name for this method would be helpful at this point Again, sorry for not being able to be more clear, im just not sure what this is called.

• How do you optimize database performance when providing results for autocomplete/iterative search?

  Note: In this question I'm using the term "autocomplete" (or "iterative search") to refer to returning search-as-you-type results, e.g. like Google Search gives you. Also my question is not specific to web applications vs. fat client apps. How are SQL SELECT queries normally constructed to provide decent performance for this type of query, especially over arbitrarily large data sets? In the case where the search will only query based on the first n characters (easiest case) am I still issuing a new SELECT result FROM sometable WHERE entry LIKE... on each keypress. Even with various forms of caching this seems like it might result in poor performance. In cases where you want your search string to return results with prefix matches, substring matches, etc. it's an even more difficult problem. Looking at a case of searching a list of contacts, you might return results that match FirstName + LastName, LastName + FirstName, or any other substring.

  How can I tell if return() was called from within the included file. The problem is that include() returns 'int 1', even if return() wasn't called. If anyone comes here looking for the same thing to be answered... print_r(preg_split('/([\!|\?|\.|\!\?])/', $string, null, PREG_SPLIT_DELIM_CAPTURE)); Is there any way to split a string on a set of delimiters, and retain the position and character(s) of the delimiter after the split? For example, using delimiters of ! ? . !? turning this: $string = 'Hello. A question? How strange! Maybe even surreal!? Who knows.'; into this array('Hello', '.', 'A question', '?', 'How strange', '!', 'Maybe even surreal', '!?', 'Who knows', '.'); Currently I'm trying to use print_r(preg_split('/([\!|\?|\.|\!\?])/', $string)); to capture the delimiters as a subpattern, but I'm not having much luck.

• Stubborn UIButton

  I have a UIButton that is supposed to be disabled during certain phases. So, when this happens I do [myButton setEnabled:NO]; This is perfect because the button stays grayed and if clicked will not trigger its action, but... when the button is clicked even grayed, it enables again and a second click will trigger its actions (???????!!!!!!!!!!). How can that be? If the button is disabled it is supposed to be "part of the background", i.e., an image without any action. I have tried to make the button vanish using alpha but even if you click on the empty spot, it reappears after the first click and then can trigger actions after the second click... (????) Am I missing something?

  I am fairly new to R, but the more use it, the more I see how powerful it really is over SAS or SPSS. Just one of the major benefits, as I see them, is the ability to get and analyze data from the web. I imagine this is possible (and maybe even straightforward), but I am looking to parse JSON data that is publicly available on the web. I am not programmer by any stretch, so any help and instruction you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Even if you point me to a basic working example, I probably can work through it.

• [C#] Running elevated applications on user login with UAC?

  I need to start a program every time the user logs in, but I cannot do this without being met by a UAC dialog asking for permissions for that application. Is there any way to have an application start up on user login without the user having to answer the UAC prompt? I was thinking about running a service, but this would be a last resort. I saw something about an Application Compatibility Toolkit to disable UAC for certain applications, but I feel this is too big of a hassle - even services would be easier to program. I was just wondering if there is an even easier solution I am missing. Thanks in advance.

• A good F# codebase to learn from

  Hi all, I've been teaching myself F# for a while now. I've read Programming F# by Chris Smith (great book) and I've written a few small scripts for getting the job done here and there. But IMO the best way to learn a new programming language—and more importantly, the idioms that come with it—is to read a good open source codebase written in that language. Naturally, writing code in that language is crucial, but in the beginning, you're basically struggling with your own ignorance about how things should be done. You could perform certain tasks one way or the other, but it takes experience to realize the flaws and virtues of each. Even after you've gotten a firm grasp of how things work, reading the code of people who have an even firmer one helps a great deal. Most would agree that the most insightful parts of any learn-a-programming-language book are the code examples, and reading a well-written open source codebase is the next level of that. So are there any out there for F#?

  Need some help figuring out how to best Store Passwords, User information/Profile data and Photo/Video albums for a social website? For photos/videos the actual photo/video + even encrypting the URL with the IDs to the photo/videos so other users cannot figure it out. Creating a site like myspace and designing retirement documents but i am unsure how to specify the security requirements for the database. Two things: 1) Protect from outside users 2) Protect all these from employees being able to access this info For #2, the additional question is: If we encrypt the user info and password so even the system admins cannot get in, how can we retrieve the user data tomorrow if someone flags the user's account as spam and admin needs to check it out or if law enforcement wants info on a user?   I need to check if the user has windows on focus, I'm currently doing this: var isonfocus=true; window.onblur = function(){ isonfocus=false; } window.onfocus = function(){ isonfocus=true; } And whenever I need to check if the user has the windows on focus I just do if(isonfocus==true). Problem: if the user loses focus before the page loads, even if I do if(isonfocus==true) it will return true, even though the window is not on focus, and defining the var to false var isonfocus=false; will do the reverse. • "Cannot use fixed local inside lambda expression"

  I have an XNA 3.0 project that compiled just fine in VS2008, but that gives compile errors in VS2010 (with XNA 4.0 CTP). The error: Cannot use fixed local 'depthPtr' inside an anonymous method, lambda expression, or query expression depthPtr is a fixed float* into an array, that is used inside a Parallel.For lambda expression from System.Threading. As I said, this compiled and ran just fine on VS2008, but it does not on VS2010, even when targeting .NET 3.5. Has this changed in .NET 4.0, and even so, shouldn't it still compile when I choose .NET 3.5 as the target framework? Searching for the term "Cannot use fixed local" yields exactly one (useless) result, both in Google and Bing. If this has changed, what is the reason for this? I can imagine capturing a fixed pointer-type in a closure could get a bit weird, is that why? So I'm guessing this is bad practice? And before anyone asks: no, the use of pointers is not absolutely critical here. I would still like to know though :)

• SvcUtil and /dconly generates XSD's for data types NOT marked with the DataContract attribute.

  Has anyone ever encountered a problem with Svcutil and the /dconly option where it generates metadata for EVERY data type in an Assembly, even if it is NOT marked with with the [DataContract()] attribute? It also appears to be generating metadata for types only referenced in the code, such as XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas even though these are not a part of the physical assembly that I generated metadata on. Some info: Using the .NET 4.0 version of SvcUtil. Does not matter if class is empty or not. No references are specified in the command line for SvcUtil. • Looking for suggestions about an architecture of a MultiThreaded app.

  Hello everyone. I am looking to develop a multithreaded application that will be running in unconditional loop and processing high volume of data. High volume is 2000+ records per minute. Processing will involve data retrieval, calculations and data updates. I need the application to perform so that there is virtually no back log, meaning i need to be able to finish up all of the 2000 points in one minute or even faster. Our current implementation features a multithreaded application that is spawn multiple times (from 10 to 20) and we are noticing that it's not handling data as expected and i even feel that instances of the application compete with each other for processor time and eventually if not slowing, not benefiting each other for sure. I would like to know what would be the best approach: have a single instance running but maximize threads that can run simultaneously? or is there other ways i don't know? I'm open to suggestions. • Qt/C++ event loop exception handling

  I am having an application heavily based on QT and on a lot of third party libs. THese happen to throw some exceptions in several cases. In a native Qt App this causes the application to abort or terminate. Often the main data model is still intact as I am keeping it in pure Qt with no external data. So I am thinking that I could also just recover by telling the user that there has occured an error in this an that process and he should save now or even decide to continue working on the main model. Currently the program jsut silently exits without even telling a story. Please help.

  So I have been googleing around for a couple of days but I have not found a solution so far, so I'm turning to you guys with hope that there even is a possible solution for this. I need to, at the end of each line in a textarea add a linebreak before it is sent to PHP. That is, even if the user does not press enter but if a word get's cut of or it just jumps down a row because it has filled the with of the textarea. And I need to do so with jQuery or Javascript. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to do so? Thanks!

• How can I get around MySQL Errcode 13 with SELECT INTO OUTFILE?

  but I am trying to dump the contents of a table to a csv file using a MySQL SELECT INTO OUTFILE statement. If I do: SELECT column1, column2 INTO OUTFILE 'outfile.csv' FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' FROM table_name; outfile.csv will be created on the server in the same directory this database's files are stored in. However, when I change my query to: SELECT column1, column2 INTO OUTFILE '/data/outfile.csv' FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' FROM table_name; I get: ERROR 1 (HY000): Can't create/write to file '/data/outfile.csv' (Errcode: 13) Errcode 13 is a permissions error, even if I change ownership of /data to mysql:mysql and give it 777 permissions. MySQL is running as user "mysql". Strangely, I can create the file in /tmp, just not in any other directory I've tried, even with permissions set such that user mysql should be able to write to the directory. This is MySQL 5.0.75 running on Ubuntu.
