• Write a compiler for a language that looks ahead and multiple files?

  In my language I can use a class variable in my method when the definition appears below the method. It can also call methods below my method and etc. There are no 'headers'. Take this C# example. class A { public void callMethods() { print(); B b; b.notYetSeen(); public void print() { Console.Write("v = {0}", v); } int v=9; } class B { public void notYetSeen() { Console.Write("notYetSeen()\n"); } } How should I compile that? what i was thinking is: pass1: convert everything to an AST pass2: go through all classes and build a list of define classes/variable/etc pass3: go through code and check if there's any errors such as undefined variable, wrong use etc and create my output But it seems like for this to work I have to do pass 1 and 2 for ALL files before doing pass3. Also it feels like a lot of work to do until I find a syntax error (other than the obvious that can be done at parse time such as forgetting to close a brace or writing 0xLETTERS instead of a hex value). My gut says there is some other way. Note: I am using bison/flex to generate my compiler.

• Should we have a database independent SQL like query language in Django? [closed]

  Note : I know we have Django ORM already that keeps things database independent and converts to the database specific SQL queries. Once things starts getting complicated it is preferred to write raw SQL queries for better efficiency. When you write raw sql queries your code gets trapped with the database you are using. I also understand its important to use the full power of your database that can-not be achieved with the django orm alone. My Question : Until I use any database specific feature, why should one be trapped with the database. For instance : We have a query with multiple joins and we decided to write a raw sql query. Now, that makes my website postgres specific. Even when I have not used any postgres specific feature. I feel there should be some fake sql language which can translate to any database's sql query. Even Django's ORM can be built over it. So, that if you go out of ORM but not database specific - you can still remain database independent. I asked the same question to Jacob Kaplan Moss (In person) : He advised me to stay with the database that I like and endure its whole power, to which I agree. But my point was not that we should be database independent. My point is we should be database independent until we use a database specific feature. Please explain, why should be there a fake sql layer over the actual sql ?

• Hybrid EAV/CR model via WCF (and statically-typed language)?

  Background I'm working on the architecture for a cloud-based LOB application, using Silverlight for the client, WCF, ASP.NET/C# for server and SQL Server for storage. The data model requires some flexibility per user (ability to add custom properties and define validation rules for them, for example), and a hybrid EAV/CR persistence model on the server side will suit nicely. Problem I need an efficient and maintainable technology and approach to handle the transformation from the persisted EAV model to/from WCF (and similarly allow the client to bind to the resulting data - DataGrid is a key UI element)? Admission: I don't yet know enough about WCF to understand if it supports ExpandoObject directly, but I suspect it will. Options I started off looking at WCF RIA services, but quickly discovered they're heavily dependent upon both static type data and compile-time code generation. Neither of these appeal. The options I'm considering include: Using WCF RIA services and pass the data over the network directly in EAV form (i.e. Dictionary), and handle the binding issue purely on the client side (like this) Using a dynamic language (probably IronPython) to handle both ends of the communication, with plumbing to generate the necessary CLR type data on the client to allow binding, and transform to/from EAV form on the server (spam preventer stopped me from posting a URL here, I'll try it in a comment). Dynamic LINQ (CreateClass() and friends), although I'm way out of my depth there and don't know what the limitations on that approach might be yet. I'm interested in comments on these approaches as well as alternative approaches that might solve the problem. Other Notes The Silverlight client will not be the only consumer of the service, making me slightly uncomfortable with option #1 above. While the data model is flexible, it's not expected to be modified heavily. For argument's sake, we could assume that we might have 25 distinct data models active at a given time, with something like 10-20 unique data fields/rules each. Modifications to the data model will happen infrequently (typically when a new user is initially configured).

• What is a good programming language/environment for Linux database applications?

  I could use some advice on my move from the Windows world to Linux. For my business, I have used VB6 and Microsoft Access with both Access databases and SQL server in the past. The easy to use forms, report writers and programming language were perfect for CRUD apps and analysis for our small hotel/restaurant business. After using Linux at home for some time I would like to convert our small business. Our server is already a Linux box using Samba. I am happy with the OpenOffice.org applications instead of Microsoft Office. The only thing which is holding me back is a desktop database application where I can develop the forms and reports we require. Base does not seem to be up to the job yet from my experience. I would like something like VB.Net with visual studio (express) but I would like to avoid Mono – I just don’t see the point of it. (You can correct me if I’m wrong.) But a good collection of forms, controls and a good report writer would be ideal. I have looked at web based stuff like Ruby on Rails, but I think a webserver for our 5 pc network is overkill. I don’t mind running a proper database on our Ubuntu 9.10 server. I may have exposed a few prejudices above but my mind is open. Any thoughts?

• How do I add the go language to gitg's list of viewable sources?

  Hoping a 'git' guru will help out here. I am just beginning to "git" for the first time and have (among other things :-) ) git and gitg installed from Ubuntu 10.4 / AMD64 distribution (ie. maybe not 'latest' version but not ancient). I am trying to look at the go code I've committed via gitg and in the "tree tab" it says :Cannot display file content as text. However, the "details tab" shows the diffs of the same file just fine. I know gitg's "tree tab" is working because I can use the tree view on *.c / *.html / *.txt etc just fine. Is there a way to tweak gitg into understanding that "*.go" is just text? A little more context: Installed gitg version is 0.0.5 - ie a version behind latest - 0.0.6 - source of which I am looking thru now. I do have a working /usr/share/gtksourceview-2.0/language-specs/ go.lang. It works just fine as highlighter in gedit. It appears that gitg may require displayable files to have a mime type of "text/plain", so I added that to go.lang No joy. gitg still fails on *.go I'm relatively sure the fix is simple, just don't know where to look.

  In the following code, I create one peg puzzle then do a move on it which adds a move to its movesAlreadyDone vector. Then I create another peg puzzle then do a move on it which adds a move to its movesAlreadyDone vector. When I print out the values in that vector for the second one, it has the move in it from the first one along with the move from the second one. Can anyone tell me why it seems to be assigning by reference and not value?   I have this problem containing some inequations and requirement to minimize a value. After doing some research on the Internet, I came to conclusion that using Prolog might be the easiest way to solve it. However, I never used Prolog before, and I would hate to waste my time learning it just to discover that it is not the right tool for this job. Please, if you know Prolog, take a look at this problem and tell me if Prolog is the right one. • openvpn not creating internal route for client

  I have two openvpn clients and a server using shared keys. I have internal routes specified in the ccd directory for both clients, but when they connect, the server only creates the internal route for one of them, despite the logs saying it's creating both. Both clients and the server use the "--script-security 2" command-line option. Can anyone think of why it would do this ?   Hi Guys, So its more like advice i need. I got 2 iPhone 3GS (Bootloader 06.02 and BB 05.11) which are lying around useless cause it was bought it from US and now i am in Dubai. Cannot use the phone because there is no unlock. Now rather than waiting and relying on other people to provide a unlock for the baseband , i was thinking of learning what it takes to unlock a iPhone. I currently don't even know what i got to learn to do this. I understand from soem reading around that i will need to learn ARM to understand the baseband and try to find a exploit: is it correct? I really want to help people out in getting their iPhones working. Also the iPhones cost was $645 each (16GB) so its not like Apple is going to loose any money of it, the person who bought it for me thought that if your not buying with an AT&T contract it means that it is unlocked but it is not true. I need help, i am willing to learn and you guys are the best bunch around to give me advice. Regards.

  I often hear people talking about Javascript in conjunction with web browser programming/web page programming and such, and/or form logic, etc. However, outside of a browser, can Javascript source be written and compiled to work outside of a browser, much like C/C++ can work in a terminal window/GUI window with a library? Can I write "Hello World" in Javascript in a console terminal on a modern OS GUI and such like C?

  I like how Windows Skydrive lets you drag files into Internet Explorer where an ActiveX component uploads those files to your Skydrive account in a queue. This avoids the cumbersome traditional HTML approach where you present multiple "Browse" buttons and the user has to select individual files one by one, click Upload and then select more files after the first batch completes. What I'm not sure is how the same effect could be achieved in a web app without ActiveX. Any suggestions?

  I'm new to django, so please feel free to tell me if I'm doing this incorrectly. I am trying to create a django ordering system. My order model: class Order(models.Model): ordered_by = models.ForeignKey(User, limit_choices_to = {'groups__name': "Managers", 'is_active': 1}) in my admin ANY user can enter an order, but ordered_by must be someone in the group "managers" (this is the behavior I want). Now, if the logged in user happens to be a manager I want it to automatically fill in the field with that logged in user. I have accomplished this by: class OrderAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): def formfield_for_foreignkey(self, db_field, request, **kwargs): if db_field.name == "ordered_by": if request.user in User.objects.filter(groups__name='Managers', is_active=1): kwargs["initial"] = request.user.id kwargs["empty_label"] = "-------------" return db_field.formfield(**kwargs) return super(OrderAdmin, self).formfield_for_foreignkey(db_field, request, **kwargs) This also works, but the admin puts the username as the display for the select box by default. It would be nice to have the user's real name listed. Do I need to use the super() function somehow to pass on this info? or something completely different?

  I would like to display a directory structure using Gtk# widgets through F#, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to translate TreeViews into F#. Say I had a directory structure that looks like this: Directory1 SubDirectory1 SubDirectory2 SubSubDirectory1 SubDirectory3 Directory2 How would I show this tree structure with Gtk# widgets using F#? EDIT: gradbot's was the answer I was hoping for with a couple of exceptions. If you use ListStore, you loose the ability to expand levels, if you instead use : let musicListStore = new Gtk.TreeStore([|typeof<String>; typeof<String>|]) you get a layout with expandable levels. Doing this, however, breaks the calls to AppendValues so you have to add some clues for the compiler to figure out which overloaded method to use: musicListStore.AppendValues (iter, [|"Fannypack" ; "Nu Nu (Yeah Yeah) (double j and haze radio edit)"|]) Note that the columns are explicitly passed as an array.   hi my knowledge of xml and php is somewhat basic but have been able to parse a simple xml document (one level) ~ <numbers> <number>1</number> <number>2</number> </numbers> i'm attempting to parse an xml document from a website providing the latest market prices for gold bullion. I think i'm going to need a paid professional but want to give it a shot the xml file looks like this: <envelope> <message type="MARKET_DEPTH_A" version="0.1"> <market> <pitches> <pitch securityClassNarrative="GOLD" securityId="AUXLN" considerationCurrency="GBP" > <buyPrices> <price actionIndicator="B" quantity="0.153" limit="23477" /> </buyPrices> <sellPrices> <price actionIndicator="S" quantity="0.058" limit="23589" /> </sellPrices> </pitch> </pitches> </market> </message> </envelope> and simply i have no idea how to access the values within the "headings". • How prevalent is the use of Emacs' eshell in multi-platform development?

  I've only recently become aware of Emacs' eshell tool. It looks quite powerful in that it is entirely written in Emacs Lisp and does not require native subshell support. The Emacs info documentation is a bit sparse but EmacsWiki has pretty decent information, at least on a first glance. Given the potential value of eshell as a scripting tool/programmer's aid that works equally well on multiple platforms I'm wondering how prevalent the use of eshell versus the normal (bash) shell is among software developers. Would those of you who have taken the time to learn it recommend it or is it one of those many interesting ideas that did not really pan out?

  I know that the eclipse code completion widget can be customized to add new suggestions and even to change the order. I'm wondering whether there's a way to replace the current list format (or single-level tree, if this is a tree control) with a tree of multiple levels. Thus, for example, instead of selecting from a list of methods sorted by name, I will select from a category and then from a subcategory, and then from the items. I'm not too familiar with that part of the SDK, but I'd like to know if this is feasible. Thanks!

  I'm using Google Maps and have the map set to height/width=100%. I noticed that when I resize the browser window, my map marker icons appear to redraw on top of the same location. Meaning, if I should only have 1 map marker icon on "987 Main St", when I resize the browser window - multiple map marker icons are being now draw on top of "987 Main St" that shouldn't be there. Any ideas why this is happening and how to prevent it? UPDATE: Link to actual code

• In JSF How can I understand of multi checkboxes whether all of them is checked or not?

  As you understand from the title above, I have a datatable and checkboxes in each row. I want to enable a button when at least one checkbox is selected, and disable it when there is no selected checkboxes (I mean all of them is unselected). I could achieve this as like if one of the checkboxes is selected, the button becomes enable. However, the reversable case I have to do is when the checkboxes is being unselected, when the last selected checbox becomes unselected, the button immediately must become disabled... BTW, I must do it without using a setter method nor a backing bean. Can I perform it by using jquery or a jsfunction, richfaces, etc? As a result, I want to learn how I can disable a button at the moment when all of the checkboxes are unselected?   I've been whacking on this regex for a while, trying to build something that can pick out multiple ordered property values (DTSTART, DTEND, SUMMARY) from an .ics file. I have other options (like reading one line at a time and scanning), but wanted to build a single regex that can handle the whole thing. • Best approach for a multi-tab ASP.NET AJAX control?

  Looking for some implementation advice: I have a page that has a 3-tab ajaxToolkit:TabContainer. The purpose of the page is to expose a calculator that has two basic inputs: geo-location and date. The three tabs are labeled "City and State", "Postal Code", and "GPS Coordinates". The layout of each tab container is the same for each tab, with the exception of the location section; the location section changes because each type of location has different inputs. For example, to specify city/state, there will be three fields: city, country, and state (country and state will use cascading drop-down lists). But Postal code requires only one field (which will validate via regular expression for allowed countries). See the example design mockup: So, what I WOULD LIKE to do (in order to minimize duplicate code), is to have a common control that contains the layout and structure of the calculator without specifying anything about the location section. Then, I'd like to be able to pull in each of the unique location controls based on what tab is selected. The tab structure exists at the page level, not in a control. Any advice? I was looking at templated controls (see MSDN article here), but I'm not convinced that it's the right solution. If I HAVE to create three separate controls with similar layouts and common elements, then that's what I have to do. But REALLY, I'd prefer a more elegant, inheritance-based solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
