• Distributed Database Services?

  I'm working on a database-driven web service with clients in the US and Australia. We're currently hosted in the US, however our Australian clients are experiencing lag. The lag is primarily due to the fact that the pages launch AJAX queries which require some db work to be done on our database in the US and these take a while to perform a round trip. Ideally, we're looking for some kind of distributed database system which replicates our main US database in Australia (and possibly other locations if we choose to expand later on). Does anyone have any suggestions for services which offer something like this? Something like a CDN (CacheFly etc), which is web-based, simple to set up etc but for databases instead of static files. Ideally it would be completely transparent to the application and abstract away all the distributed database management, syncs etc.

However, all coloring is lost: categories, automatically formatted entries, etc. are not visualized in my colleagues colors - just in a non-distinguishable standard office style.   This is my first attempt at virtualizing SQL server on VMWare and I want to make sure I am doing things correctly. Should I have SQL server installed on the C: drive / same partition as the OS, Then add a virtual disk for the Data files, say 300GB, and then another virtual disk for the log files say 100GB? Or should I add 2 300GB vdisks, for the data files mirror them in the operating system, and then add a non mirrored vdisk of 100GB for LogFiles??

• Can a virtual mikrotik box bridge a hyper-v internal network with a hyper-v external network?

  I am trying to set up a Mikrotik router as a transparent firewall on my network. I got the machine working on a hardware MT box, but my boss wants the MT virtualized. I have been trying the set up where my virtual windows box talks to the Mikrotik via private or internal network on the Hyper-V host. I can get the two machines to talk, but as soon as I set up a bridge on the MT, all traffic ceases between the two. Is it possible to create a bridge for this purpose (having the MT silently in front of my firewalled server)? I could really use some help.

• Renaming server - sql 2008 server instance affected

  Will changing the computer name on which SQL Server 2008 is installed on affect SQL Server in anyway? Or will changing the computer name be transparent to SQL Server? For example: I plan to install Windows 2008 Server and naming it "BobStage". Next I will install SQL Server 2008 R2 and restore a few DB's. Finally I plan to rename the windows machine to "BobLive". Will me renaming the computer's name affect SQL Server's instance ID/name and possibly break something?

• ubuntu 10.04 logs itself out overnight

  Every night when I leave work, I lock the screen via ubuntu's "power" button in the top right hand panel. When I come to work in the morning, I'm greeted with the log-in screen. • What are the good alternatives to Windows Movie Maker in Vista?

  Short of getting a Mac and using iMovie, what are the alternatives that you'll recommend to a non-profit organization that needs to produce simple (but polished) videos to showcase their community service activities to raise funds. Currently they are using Windows Movie Maker but have sort of outgrown it. I installed Jashaka for them, and understandably, they couldn't grok it at all.   I'm a student and have just moved into a house of 6. We've setup 100mb broadband with Virgin and get quite good speeds on it so we're really pleased. However, as there are 6 of us, who all like to stream/game/download etc I was looking at setting up QoS to ensure speeds were fair/equal etc. I looked into it and found out that the Virgin Superhub can't do it out of the box, so my next option is to setup squid proxy on my machine (always on) to act as at transparent proxy and provide QoS etc. However, I'm not really sure how to do this and had a look on the Internet but couldn't see any guides as such! I was wondering if someone could give me some more and perhaps provider a summary of the steps involved - and let me know if this is possible with the SuperHub etc. Thanks, Dave

Making some security testing I'd noticed than my server is returning a 200 HTTP status code of the default error page when I try to access to a non-existent element instead of return a 404 status code and redirect me to the default error page. • Linux-Mint Maya Mate loses Alt-F1 menu and Alt-F2 run-dialog with Compiz

  I like the Linux-Mint 13 Mate Alt-F1 menu and the Alt-F2 run-dialog, but as soon as I installed Compiz those keys became non-functional. Conpiz has a Gnome compaatibility settings panel which allows you to set these keys, but using that Compix settings panel did not make any diference (probably because Mate is not Gnome, strictly speaking)... Is there some way to get those two shortcut keys back into acton with Compiz?

• Windows 7 offline files - work temporarily offline even if network connection works

  Sometimes I am connected via VPN to a network containing the server where files are stored which are cached by Windows offline files feature. Sometimes the connection works good and working this way is not a problem - on other times working is quite a pain because of high latency when working with the files in the Windows explorer. Is there an interactive way how a user (with admin permissions) can temporary suspend online usage of offline files? I already activated the "Transparent caching" group policy feature (Computer Configuration Policies Administrative Templates Networks Offline Files) with a network latency of 200msec but from my experience even if I get ping times to the file server of less than 40msec online usage is quite tenacious. Setting low latency times at this point causes the offline files often to toggle which makes problems with some applications working with several files and requires them to be consistent (like SVN client).

• Excel 2007: what happened to the Auto Expand Selection tool?

  Older versions of Excel had a icon that would expand the selection to include any non-empty cells in all directions. It was an X shape with four arrowheads. You can still write VBA code to do this, but I really miss this tool. Did they just drop it from Excel 2007? In older versions you had to go get it from the Customize menu because it wasn't on any toolbar by default.

It seems to be pretty transparent in terms of deployment and with my seat of the pants testing I have not noticed any difference in performance. The main reason that I want to boot vhd is due to their transportablility between different hardware and to hyper-v servers. the following roles will be installed. dfsr dhcp iis application server dc <- haven't tested this yet but see no reason why it won't work.   I'm running Adobe AIR 1.5.2 (latest) on Windows 7 (64-bit RTM) and downloaded TweetDeck 0.31.1 (latest). When I run TweetDeck I get the following errors: Ooops, TweetDeck can't find your data and Sorry, Adobe AIR has a problem running on this computer Other AIR applications install and run fine. I've uninstalled both TweetDeck and AIR and reinstalled. Following the uninstalls I've also removed all on-disk references to both TweetDeck and AIR, but no luck. UPDATE: Using Process Monitor I did a trace of Tweetdeck from the moment it launched until the first error occurred. I saw the following information in the output of the trace: 1 5:22:18.6522338 PM TweetDeck.exe 5580 CreateFile D:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\rs\??\d:\Use\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR\ELS\TweetDeckFast.F9107117265DB7542C1A806C8DB837742CE14C21.1\PrivateEncryptedDatak NAME INVALID Desired Access: Generic Write, Read Attributes, Disposition: OverwriteIf, Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory File, Attributes: N, ShareMode: Read, Write, AllocationSize: 0 In this trace output, Tweetdeck.exe is trying to create the file D:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\rs\??\d:\Use\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR\ELS\TweetDeckFast.F9107117265DB7542C1A806C8DB837742CE14C21.1\PrivateEncryptedDatak but the path specified is invalid. When looking at the path you can see that it is indeed an invalid path. First, there’s the “??” portion which doesn’t exist in the file system since the “?” is an invalid character in Windows/NTFS file systems. Additionally, looking at this path, it actually seems to be composed of two parts (is the "??" a delimiter?): Part 1: D:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\rs\?? Part 2: d:\Use\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR\ELS \TweetDeckFast.F9107117265DB7542C1A806C8DB837742CE14C21.1\PrivateEncryptedDatak (the problem here is that d:\Use... doesn’t even exist. What seems to be happening here is that Tweetdeck is looking for the user credentials (the “PrivateEncryptedDatak” file) but it’s looking in the wrong place, can’t find the file, and hence the error that Tweetdeck is giving (shown in the screenshot). I'm trying to determine how TweetDeck is getting this path. I searched the contents of all files on my hard disk hoping to find some TweetDeck or Adobe AIR configuration file containing this incorrect path, but I was unable to find anything. UPDATE: See Carl's comment regarding directory junctions and symbolic links under my accepted answer. This ended up being the problem.
