• Using rel=canonical and noindex in a 1-n partners enviroment

  We sell a whole site (domain, etc) to partners that create content that is shown together at the main site. What we want to achieve is that the main site copy is the original, but the one that is indexed is the partners copy. We want to do it this way so the search results point to the partner sites but never to the main site while the main site gets all the credit for the links. We are trying setting the main site article with a noindex, follow and a link to the partner article, and in the partner article we have a rel=canonical pointing to the main site article. Are we correct or the noindex at the main site will break the canonical reference?

  After getting a new MacBook Air and deciding to try out OS X for a while, I started wondering why the battery would suddenly start dying really fast, but only when I was sitting at the kitchen table. That’s when I noticed the display brightness kept changing on its own… and realized the problem. OS X, just like your phone, and any modern device, tries to figure out the brightness of the room you’re in, and adjust the brightness of the screen. If you are over in Windows, it’s called “Adaptive” brightness, while your phone will just call it “Auto”. While this technology is great in theory, I don’t really need max brightness all the time, and I like to control it manually to make sure I’m getting the best battery life. Open up System Preferences, head to Displays. Then uncheck the Automatically adjust brightness setting.

• Trouble with UV Mapping Blender => Unity 3

  For some reason I am getting nasty grey edges around the edges of rendered 3D models that are not present in Blender. I seem to be able to solve the problem by reducing the size of the UV coordinates within the part of the texture that is to be mapped. But this means that: I am wasting valuable texture space Loss of accuracy in drawn UV maps Could I be doing something wrong, perhaps a setting in Unity that needs changing? I have watched countless tutorials which demonstrate Blender default generated UV coordinates with "Texture Paint" which are perfectly aligned in Unity. • Continuous integration - build Debug and Release every time?

  Is it standard practice when setting up a Continuous Integration server to build a Debug and Release version of each project? Most of the time developers code with a Debug mode project configuration set enabled and there could be different library path configurations, compiler defines, or other items configured differently between Debug/Release that would cause them to act differently. I configured my CI server to build both Debug & Release of each project and I'm wondering if I'm just overthinking it. My assumption is that I'll do this as long as I can get quick feedback and once that happens, then push the Release off to a nightly build perhaps. Is there a 'standard' way of approaching this?

I will list all the questions here and answer them together. What is the purpose of Master database? Should our backup Master database? What happens if Master database is corrupted? You can also include many other columns from the same view. Minimum Maximum Memory – Server Memory Options I was recently reading about SQL Server Memory Options over here. While reading this one line really caught my attention is minimum value allowed for maximum memory options. The default setting for min server memory is 0, and the default setting for max server memory is 2147483647. The minimum amount of memory you can specify for max server memory is 16 megabytes (MB). 2011 Fundamentals of Columnstore Index There are two kinds of storage in a database. Row Store and Column Store. Row store does exactly as the name suggests – stores rows of data on a page – and column store stores all the data in a column on the same page. These columns are much easier to search – instead of a query searching all the data in an entire row whether the data are relevant or not, column store queries need only to search a much lesser number of the columns. How to Ignore Columnstore Index Usage in Query In summary the question in simple words “How can we ignore using the column store index in selective queries?” Very interesting question – you can use I can understand there may be the cases when the column store index is not ideal and needs to be ignored the same. You can use the query hint IGNORE_NONCLUSTERED_COLUMNSTORE_INDEX to ignore the column store index. The SQL Server Engine will use any other index which is best after ignoring the column store index. 2012 Storing Variable Values in Temporary Array or Temporary List SQL Server does not support arrays or a dynamic length storage mechanism like list. Absolutely there are some clever workarounds and few extra-ordinary solutions but everybody can;t come up with such solution. Additionally, sometime the requirements are very simple that doing extraordinary coding is not required. Here is the simple case. Move Database Files MDF and LDF to Another Location It is not common to keep the Database on the same location where OS is installed. Usually Database files are in SAN, Separate Disk Array or on SSDs. This is done usually for performance reason and manageability perspective. Now the challenges comes up when database which was installed at not preferred default location and needs to move to a different location. Here is the quick tutorial how you can do it. UNION ALL and ORDER BY – How to Order Table Separately While Using UNION ALL If your requirement is such that you want your top and bottom query of the UNION resultset independently sorted but in the same result set you can add an additional static column and order by that column. Let us re-create the same scenario. • Firefox ignore GTK theme for localhost stuff

  I know this is pretty much a duplicate of How can one make firefox ignore my GTK theme entirely?, but the answers on that one are no permanent solution. It works by launching firefox from the terminal. I would like to know a solution that works for every instance of firefox no matter how it was created. There is the possibility to edit the userContent.css file, but the settings you make randomly do not apply to some sites or in some situations, strangely, even with the !important added... I have a dark GTK theme and this results in some textboxes having a black background with black text with a userContent.css that has input, textarea { color: black !important; background-color: white !important; } Update I changed a setting in about:config from true to false, namely browser.display.use_system_colors. Everything appears normal and well now, for one exception: everything that runs on localhost. This includes PHPMyAdmin and a website I am making. I would like to know if there is a solution to this.

• Is the Google Webmaster Tools verification temporary?

  When you add a site to Google Webmaster Tools, it asks you to verify it (e.g. via a <meta> tag). I verified a site a while ago, but when I logged in, I noticed that it isn't verified anymore. The history shows that it was verified 58 days ago, but then 30 days ago it tried and failed saying that "revierification failed". I'm not sure if this is a result of some setting I changed which required a reverification, or if Google Webmaster Tools periodically tries to verify the site. I was under the impression that the verification only happens once when you add the site, and then you can delete the <meta> tag. If this is not how it works, and it does reverify periodically, will it require a different <meta> tag value or can I keep the original one I used and never have to worry about it again?

• Should I work on CSS or apps first?

  I am working on my own website for my business, and I need to contract out some assistance. For example, I have the site looking pretty good on Firefox, but it needs help on other browsers. I also need some help with adding some Django apps to the site and setting up a database. I plan to seek the help of two different individuals via elance or odesk. My question is which to do first - get the css and html right then do the apps, or get the apps done and then work on the css and html? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

• Phone crash when try to use vibration on Android

  Im developing an app that when you click a button the phone has to vibrate, the issue is that the phone just chashes. Saing that I need permitions to vibrate. I've already set this permition in the build.setting (android manifiest). • Error java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: getNewTla using Oracle EPM products

  Running into a Java out of memory error, it is very common behaviour in the field that the Java heap size will be increased. While this might help to solve a heap space out of memory error, it might not help to fix an out of memory error for the Thread Local Area (TLA). Increasing the available heap space from 1 GB to 16 GB might not even help in this situation. The Thread Local Area (TLA) is part of the Java heap, but as the name already indicates, this memory area is local to a specific thread so there is no need to synchronize with other threads using this memory area. For optimization purposes the TLA size is configurable using the Java command line option “-XXtlasize”. Depending on the JRockit version and the available Java heap, the default values vary. Using Oracle EPM System (mainly 11.1.2.x) the following setting was tested successfully: -XXtlasize:min=8k,preferred=128k More information about the “-XXtlasize” parameter can be found in the JRockit documentation: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E13150_01/jrockit_jvm/jrockit/jrdocs/refman/optionXX.html

In the past month there have been 4,230 daily high-temperature records set across the continental United States. Over at NPR they’ve rounded up some environmental data that paints a picture of the US as a scorching hot place to be right now. The above map shows the number of locations reporting a recording setting temperature in the month of June; many of those places are on track to appear on the July map (available in the full NPR post). • Game Physics: Implementing Normal Reaction from ground correctly

  I am implementing a simple side scrolling platform game. I am using the following strategy while coding the physics: Gravity constantly acts on the character. When the character is touching the floor, a normal reaction is exerted by the floor. I face the following problem: If the character is initially at a height, he acquires velocity in the -Y direction. Thus, when he hits the floor, he falls through even though normal force is being exerted. I could fix this by setting the Y velocity to 0, and placing him above the floor if he has collided with it. But this often leads to the character getting stuck in the floor or bouncing around it. Is there a better approach ?

  I have a multi-language site for English and Chinese (Hong Kong). My previous setting for Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk) had: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh-hk" xml:lang="zh-hk"> Shortly, I began to notice browser with other Chinese language sub-codes like zh-tw and zh-cn were seeing my English site in search engines instead of Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk), which makes sense. I want to change my html lang to: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh" xml:lang="zh"> Would this cover all Chinese language settings? Also, would Google prefer to show pages that match language subcodes of the browser/country (zh-hk for Hong Kong, zh-cn for Taiwan) than a general language code (zh)?

• Inserting multiple links to one image in Confluence

  I am setting up a Wiki in Confluence v3.5.1 I have added a visio diagram (JPG) to a page (this diagram will take up most of the page) - This diagram depicts the workflow between developers and support and clients. I envisage users being able to click on different parts of the diagram and it to open up child pages with more details about that particular process (with videos on 'how-to' do that specific task, like log issues in Jira) However, from what I can see, there is no way from the Confluence editor to add multiple links to the one image, right? I looked at Anchors, but this does not look like it will do the job. So, what is the best option? I remember Dreamweaver having these sorts of tools built in, and there appears to be other utilities that can help put in image map HTML tags, but I cannot see a way of easily editing the HTML in Confluence editor. Also worried about the headache this could cause with managing future changes of the page.

• Can search engine robots read file with permission 640?

  I am on a shared web hosting linux server. I want search engine robots/spiders to be able to read the robots.txt but not any one typing www.mysite.com/robots.txt. As per the following google group post, the user specifies that by setting file permission to 640, it's possible to deny access to robots.txt file by the world but still enable search engine robots to read them. Is that true? If not how it's possible to deny general public access to robots.txt but still allow Search engine robots to read them.

• ~/.bashrc return can only 'return' from a function or sourced script

  I am trying to setup a OpenStack box to have a look at OpenStack Object Storage (Swift). Looking through the web I found this link; http://swift.openstack.org/development_saio.html#loopback-section I followed the instructions line by line but stuck on step 7 in the "Getting the code and setting up test environment" section. When I execute ~/.bashrc I get; line 6: return: can only 'return' from a function or sourced script. Below is the Line 6 extract from ~/.bashrc. My first reaction is to comment this line out, but I dont know what it does. Can anyone help? #If not running interactively, dont't do anything [ -z "$PS1" ] && return I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 as a VM on Hyper-v if knowing that is useful.

• Preventing indexing duplicate content by search engines

  I am in process of migrating my old domain (www.oldurl.com) to new domain (www.newurl.com). Almost all the content,URL structure as well database is same except for few URL's and only difference will be in the domain name. I have made entries in the Apache's .htaccess file to set 301 redirect and currently have blocked all search engines from crawling my new domain by setting in robot.txt file. I am not sure how i will handle the duplicate content issue as when i will make the new domain go live. Should i block search engines to index/crawl my old domain? i am new to this field and not sure if this is actually any duplicate content issue or not.

• Integrating eBay and PayPal inventory

  Say I have an item for sale on eBay, and the same item for sale on another site via PayPal. Is it possible to have sales on one site reflected in the inventory for the other site, and vice-versa? In other words, if I have ten items for sale, and I buy one on either site, it should show that there are nine items left on both sites. I know that PayPal has an API for setting the inventory level of an item associated with a button. eBay also has an API for controlling an item's inventory. I'm wondering if anyone has tried to integrate them.

• Use gnome custom themes appearance in KDE?

  Is there a way to get the colors of a gnome custom theme to KDE without matching every single setting manually? (Theres tons of different color settings in the KDE color schemes, most of which I even don't know where they are applied ... I use KDE with compiz to run emerald as windows decorator. Because I really like the "Elementary"-theme. Because my eyes aren't that great I had to tweak the gtk-elementary theme for some additional contrast. I saved it as "elementary-piedro". Now I want to choose this theme in KDE-Systemsettings/appearance/gtk-applications but it doesnt't show the tweaked version? Where is it saved by the normal "gnome appearance preferences"-utility? Is there a way to use the tweaked settings for KDE-applications?

• Good and easy way to share files on local machine

  I would like to have a directory that has following properties: Many users can copy files into it These files can be deleted/changed by these users (user A can delete/modify file that was copied into this directory) it cant be done using normal file permissions (because permissions are retained on copy). EDIT AFAIK setting SGID bit is not enugh, it only affects newly created files --- and basic workflow for these use cases ivnolves copying and other operations (which cleave file's gid unchanged)

• How do I get brightness controls working properly on an Eee PC 1001P?

  Is there a solution to the low screen brightness issue with the Eee PC 1001P and release 12.04? When I use the brightness control, the screen goes through three adjustment cycles of dark to semi bright, but never gets to bright. As you index the control up, brightness increases, then suddenly cuts back to dark. use the brightness button to further increase the brightness and the same cycle happens. As though there are three distinct brightness events, each one setting back to low level. Under no circumstances other than initial boot up can you get to a bright screen. I just finished installing 12.04 on two Acer (Gateway netbooks) with no brightness issue. Just on the Eee PC 1001P Eee PC model is 1001P
