• Screen gets stuck in a dim setting after waking up

  I've got a laptop that I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. It works a lot better now for a lot of things, but there's one problem I've had happen a few times that never happened under Vista. When I put the system to sleep, then occasionally when I wake it up again, for no apparent reason, the screen's dim. Sometimes it's as if half the backlighting was turned off, and sometimes it's as if all the backlighting was turned off, all except for the mouse pointer, which remains as bright white as ever. Trying to change the screen's brightness does nothing, but rebooting fixes this. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas on what's causing it or how to make it stop happening?

• Jerky animation on window open/close

  Today, I received and installed Windows 7, and one of the first (slightly) annoying things I noticed is a visible jerk when opening of closing new windows. When I minimize or maximize already running window, the animation is smooth from beginning to end, but when I start a new program, it seems that just at the end of the animation Windows thinks for a fraction of a second. It is a bit distracting; especially since Windows 7 seems to be overall more responsive than Windows Vista. Does anybody has the same experience? Could it, for instance, a 64bit version specific issue (just in case)? I upgraded Vidia drivers, and even though my video card is not capable running latest games, it should be able to handle this (since it was OK in Vista, and since it does not look like a video issue).

• Wildcard subdomain .htaccess and Codeigniter

  Hi All, I am trying to create the proper .htaccess that would allow me to map as such: http://domain.com/ --> http://domain.com/home http://domain.com/whatever --> http://domain.com/home/whatever http://user.domain.com/ --> http://domain.com/user http://user.domain.com/whatever --> http://domain.com/user/whatever/ Here, someone would type in the above URLs, however internally, it would be redirecting as if it were the URL on the right. Also the subdomain would be dynamic (that is, http://user.domain.com isn't an actual subdomain but would be a .htaccess rewrite) Also /home is my default controller so no subdomain would internally force it to /home controller and any paths following it (as shown in #2 example above) would be the (catch-all) function within that controller. Like wise if a subdomain is passed it would get passed as a (catch-all) controller along with any (catch-all) functions for it (as shown in #4 example above) Hopefully I'm not asking much here but I can't seem to figure out the proper .htaccess or routing rules (in Codeigniter) for this. httpd.conf and hosts are setup just fine. • VirtualBox: Host OS processor is spiked while guest OS virtual processor is idle?

  I'm running Windows XP 32-bit on Windows Vista 64-bit with VirtualBox 3.0.6. Whenever I run the XP VM, Vista (host) reports 100% cpu utilization even though XP (guest) reports between 1-5% cpu utilization. The host box has 2 GB of physical RAM. The guest/vm is configured with 512 MB. The host box has a 64-bit AMD processor. No apps (other than VirtualBox) are running on either host, they're just idling. Any guesses as to why the host processor is spiked? I've enabled various advanced features for the XP guest in the hopes of having better performance: Settings → System → Motherboard: Enable IO APIC Settings → System → Processor: Enable PAE/NX Settings → System → Acceleration: Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nesting Paging

• SQLAlchemy DetachedInstanceError with regular attribute (not a relation)

  I just started using SQLAlchemy and get a DetachedInstanceError and can't find much information on this anywhere. I am using the instance outside a session, so it is natural that SQLAlchemy is unable to load any relations if they are not already loaded, however, the attribute I am accessing is not a relation, in fact this object has no relations at all. I found solutions such as eager loading, but I can't apply to this because this is not a relation. I even tried "touching" this attribute before closing the session, but it still doesn't prevent the exception. What could be causing this exception for a non-relational property even after it has been successfully accessed once before? Any help in debugging this issue is appreciated. I will meanwhile try to get a reproducible stand-alone scenario and update here. • Sourcing a script file in bash before starting an executable

  Hi, I'm trying to write a bash script that "wraps" whatever the user wants to invoke (and its parameters) sourcing a fixed file just before actually invoking it. To clarify: I have a "ConfigureMyEnvironment.bash" script that must be sourced before starting certain executables, so I'd like to have a "LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash" script that you can use as in: LaunchInMyEnvironment <whatever_executable_i_want_to_wrap> arg0 arg1 arg2 I tried the following LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash: #!/usr/bin/bash launchee="$@" if [ -e ConfigureMyEnvironment.bash ]; then source ConfigureMyEnvironment.bash; fi exec "$launchee" where I have to use the "launchee" variable to save the $@ var because after executing source, $@ becomes empty. Anyway, this doesn't work and fails as follows: myhost $ LaunchInMyEnvironment my_executable -h myhost $ /home/me/LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash: line 7: /home/bin/my_executable -h: No such file or directory myhost $ /home/me/LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash: line 7: exec: /home/bin/my_executable -h: cannot execute: No such file or directory That is, it seems like the "-h" parameter is being seen as part of the executable filename and not as a parameter... • Sharing hp Deskjet F380 using cups via http driver issues with xp client

  Hi the problem is xp doesn't have built in drivers for my printer but vista does. On vista it works perfectly without any issues. However when I try using xp, it insists that I select a driver from the selection xp offers by default. The drivers I've downloaded from HP don't support networking. Hp have stated they're non networkable. Is there anything I can do about this? Any help is greatly appreciated and would save me getting ear ache!

• BootMgr is missing, usual fixes don't work

  I know this question has been asked before but I've tried all the usual fixes and nothing works. Basically the hard drive had two partitions with Vista and Windows 7. I've deleted the Vista partition to make more room and expanded the Windows 7 partition to fill the drive (using GParted). I've tried: Running Startup Repair - it doesn't find any problems. Setting partition to Active - worked. bootsect /nt60 c: - worked. BootRec /FixMbr - worked. BootRec /FixBoot - worked. BootRec /ScanOs - I get the message "Total identified Windows installations: 0" BootRec /RebuildBcd - I get the message "Total identified Windows installations: 0" BcdEdit shows a Windows Boot Manager and a Windows Boot Loader, both on C: partition. What else can I try?

• Explorer forgetting how to cut and paste files

  My Windows XP (SP3) machine (at work) occasionally "forgets" how to cut-and-paste files in Explorer - if I cut or copy a file then go to paste it elsewhere, the "paste" and "paste shortcut" menu items are greyed out. The keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+X/Ctrl+C,Ctrl+V) don't work either, and neither does Drag-and-Drop - clicking and dragging a file/folder doesn't change the pointer and letting go doesn't drop the item anywhere. Restarting the explorer.exe process usually fixes the problem, but sometimes I need to do a full reboot. Note: this may be related to the following existing question, although that's Vista and it sounds like the asker has more permanent problems than I do: http://superuser.com/questions/27045/copy-paste-in-vista-explorer-broken-not-ms-vpc So, any idea what might be causing the problem and how to avoid it?

• Symfony + JQueryUI Tabs navigation menu question

  I'm trying to use the tabs purely as a navigational menu, loading my pages in the tabs, but being able to bookmark said tabs, and have the address bar correspond with the action I'm executing. So here is my simple nav partial: <div id='tabs'> <ul> <li id='home'><a href="<?php echo url_for('post/index') ?>" title="Home">Home</a></li> <li id='test'><a href="<?php echo url_for('post/test') ?>" title="Test">Test</a></li> </ul> </div> And the simple tabs intializer: $(document).ready(function() { $('#tabs').tabs({spinner: '' }); }); My layout just displays $sf_content. I want to display the content for the action I'm executing (currently home or test) in the tab, via ajax, and have the tab be bookmarkable. I've googled this like 4000 times and I can't find an example of what I'm trying to do. If anyone has a resource they know of, I can look it up, or if you can help, I would greatly appreciate it. • Toshiba monitor not displaying anything

  Alright, so I agreed to fix a friends computer, thinking it was a software problem, not hardware. I was going to use an XP disc and valid code to swap her from Vista to XP, as apparently Vista had some driver issues. I found out, however, that the real problem was her heat sink was completely clogged, causing the computer to overheat and shut down. So, I took the computer apart and cleaned the heat sink. However, after putting it all back together, and turning it on, nothing at all shows up. I plugged in an external monitor, and nothing shows up on that either. I have double, triple, decuply checked all the connections and everything appears to be plugged in, attached, and in the right place. I am out of ideas. So, my question is, does anyone have any clue what is going on, and have suggestions I could try?

• Deploying ASP.NET MVC to IIS6: pages are just blank

  I have an MVC app that is actually on a couple other servers but I didn't do the deploy. For this deploy I have added the wildcard to aspnet_isapi.dll which has gotten rid of the 404 error. But the pages are not pulling up, rather everything is just blank. I can't seem to find any IIS configuration differences. The Global asax.cs file does have routing defined, but as I've seen on a working server, that file isn't just hanging out in the root or anything so obvious. What could I be missing here? All of the servers are running IIS6 and I have compared the setups and they look the same to me at this point. Thanks... My question(s): Do I need to specify a 1) ServerName and 2) DocumentRoot in: /etc/apache2/apache2.conf? • Django apache-wsgi configuration problem

  Hi, I am trying to get my Django project running on the production server. I setup the environment using pip, so it is identical to the development environment where everything is running fine. The only difference is that I don't use virtualenv on production, because this project is the only one that is going to run on production. Also on production, there is an Nginx reverse proxy to serve static content, and passes dynamic requests to Apache2. The Apache wsgi file is as follows: import sys, os sys.path.append('/home/project/src') os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = 'settings' import django.core.handlers.wsgi application = django.core.handlers.wsgi.WSGIHandler() When I access the server, I get an import error: ImproperlyConfigured: Error importing middleware middleware: "cannot import name UserProfile" Which refers to the middleware.py under src/ folder which is referred by the settings. But I can import both the middleware and the UserProfile class from within ./manage.py shell prompt. It seems like a problem with paths in wsgi file but I cannot see what. The directory structure is: /home/project /home/project/src (which contains the settings.py, middleware.py and app folders) /home/apache/apache.wsgi Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, oMat

• Why does NX Client for Windows silently closes after connection?

  Hey! I connect remotely to my Ubuntu server from Vista machine. Now I need to run a GUI application on the server (Wireshark). So I decided to use FreeNX server/client to view Ubuntu GUI on Vista I have successfully installed FreeNX on Ubuntu and NX Client on Vista. I was following this guide Unfortunately, now I found myself stuck with the following problem. At the client, the !M logo window appears, but after a few seconds that window just closes, even without showing any error message. Guys, I'm really stuck, please help! I'm wondering how could I connect to the remote computer that has dynamic public ip address & private ip addresses assigned. I've 2 systems at home: xp system-------connected to internet(dynamic public ip) & allowed other users to connected to the internet on the interface. windows vista system--------enabled dhcp on the interface to access internet from xp. How could I remotely connect from my office to the 'vista system'?. If I've a router/modem at my home it may be possible to allow the ports for the system but I don't. Any tips?

• Firefox Not responding - Windows 7

  Have just upgraded from Vista to Win7 (32 bit). On vista Firefox worked great. I am using 3.5.6 version. 2GB RAM. In windows 7 however whenever i click on a link, field or tab within the browser or various other places within firefox 'Not Responding' flashes on the title bar. Most of the time i have to click 2 or 3 times to get any link or whatever to work which is very annoying. Any ideas? Can't find anything obvious on google but notice other people get Not Responding messages a lot with various apps. Chrome Plus seems to be fine.

• 64 Bit Windows drivers for Inspiron 1720

  Dell doesn't seem to offer 64 bit drivers specifically for the Inspiron 1720 (laptop). I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64bit and I want to pull down the necessary stuff before hand. Are there any Dell systems that are similar enough to the Inspiron 1720 that I can use for a baseline to make sure I still have Ethernet and WiFi after the reinstall? It doesn't matter if they are for Vista 64 or Windows 7. Identified hardware: Processor: Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T7500 Chipset: Intel Mobile 965 Express Wifi: Intel Pro Wireless Drive Controller: Intel Matrix Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Bluetooth: Dell TrueMobile 355 + EDR Ricoh card reader I think anything else, the default Windows drivers will be sufficient. Let me know if you think I missed something thing please.

• mysql subselect alternative

  Hi, Lets say I am analyzing how high school sports records affect school attendance. So I have a table in which each row corresponds to a high school basketball game. Each game has an away team id and a home team id (FK to another "team table") and a home score and an away score and a date. I am writing a query that matches attendance with this seasons basketball games. My sample output will be (#_students_missed_class, day_of_game, home_team, away_team, home_team_wins_this_season, away_team_wins_this_season) I now want to add how each team did the previous season to my analysis. Well, I have their previous season stored in the game table but i should be able to accomplish that with a subselect. So in my main select statement I add the subselect: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM game_table WHERE game_table.date BETWEEN 'start of previous season' AND 'end of previous season' AND ( (game_table.home_team = team_table.id AND game_table.home_score > game_table.away_score) OR (game_table.away_team = team_table.id AND game_table.away_score > game_table.home_score)) In this case team-table.id refers to the id of the home_team so I now have all their wins calculated from the previous year. This method of calculation is neither time nor resource intensive. The Explain SQL shows that I have ALL in the Type field and I am not using a Key and the query times out. I'm not sure how I can accomplish a more efficient query with a subselect. It seems proposterously inefficient to have to write 4 of these queries (for home wins, home losses, away wins, away losses). I am sure this could be more lucid. I'll absolutely add color tomorrow if anyone has questions

• Memory Leak Looping cfmodule inside cffunction

  Hoping someone else can confirm or tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am able to consistently reproduce an OOM running by calling the file oom.cfm (shown below). Using jconsole I am able to see the request consumes memory and never releases it until complete. The issue appears to be calling <cfmodule> inside of <cffunction>, where if I comment out the <cfmodule> call things are garbage collected while the request is running.
