• Github - what is it really?!

  ok.. this might seem like a strange question but my idea of Github and that of my boss is very different. From what I can tell its a version control tool. My boss seems to think that it will connect to the server where we're hosting our webapp and when changes are committed on github that these get applied to the server to... If this is the case how do I connect github to my server? Many thanks for helping me with what might seem like a stupid question but I've searched forums, articles and I'm more confused than ever! • Is Git ready to be recommended to my boss?

  I want to recomment Git to my boss as a new source control system, since we're stuck in the 90s with VSS (ouch), but are the tools and 3rd party support good enough yet? Specifically I'm talking about GUI front-ends similar to TortoiseSVN, decent visual diff/merge support, as well as stuff like email commit notifications and general support from 3rd parties like IDEs and build systems. Even though this will be used by programmers, we really need this kind of stuff in our team. I don't want to leave everyone stuck with a new tool, and even a new source control paradigm (distributed), with nothing but a command-line app and some online tutorials. This would be a step backwards. So what do you think... is Git ready? What decent tools exist for Git and what third party development apps support it? EDIT: My original question was pretty vague so I'm updating it to specifically ask for a list of available tools and 3rd party support for Git. Maybe we can get a community wiki post with a list of stuff. I also do not consider 'use subversion' to be an adequate answer. There are other reasons to use a distributed source control system other than offline editing - private and cheap branches being one of them.

• WCF service blocked by Windows Firewall

  Hi, I've got a WCF service using a HttpBinding. The service is running in a self hosting process (A Windows Service) and this process is inside the Windows Firewall exceptions list. If the Firewall is active and I'm trying to access the service using a C# client or Internet Explorer, the service does not respond. But if the Firewall is disabled the connection works like a charm. Does anyone have expirence with WCF and the Windows Firewall? The problem came up on Windows 7 64bit. I didn't try another OS yet. Regards Michael

  can i have multiple iis ftp sites using something similar to web site's unasigned host headers? i have a dedicated server in a hosting facility and want to make a web site for each of my clients. to add/ remove files and content i want ftp access to each of the sites root folders. lets say i have 10 sites set up using unasigned host headers... how can i set up 10 analogous ftp sites on the same server?   Hey everyone, Just moved to shared hosting on GoDaddy and Im trying to get my .htaccess rules working. • mysql/algorithm: Weighting an average to accentuate differences from the mean

  This is for a new feature on http://cssfingerprint.com (see /about for general info). The feature looks up the sites you've visited in a database of site demographics, and tries to guess what your demographic stats are based on that. All my demgraphics are in 0..1 probability format, not ratios or absolute numbers or the like. Essentially, you have a large number of data points that each tend you towards their own demographics. However, just taking the average is poor, because it means that by adding in a lot of generic data, the number goes down. For example, suppose you've visited sites S0..S50. All except S0 are 48% female; S0 is 100% male. If I'm guessing your gender, I want to have a value close to 100%, not just the 49% that a straight average would give. Also, consider that most demographics (i.e. everything other than gender) does not have the average at 50%. For example, the average probability of having kids 0-17 is ~37%. The more a given site's demographics are different from this average (e.g. maybe it's a site for parents, or for child-free people), the more it should count in my guess of your status. What's the best way to calculate this? For extra credit: what's the best way to calculate this, that is also cheap & easy to do in mysql?

• Structuring System Architecture in a Flex Web Application on a Budget (w/o Java)

  I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge. In the end I used a PureMVC (Presentation/Client) - ZendAMF (Communication) - MySql (Data) Layout. It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ? NOTE: I would just ask the adobe guys but they barely reply on their site. Thanks !

I want to host near to my WCF services my own tcp programm (like WCF service but with out WCF) for direct sockets operations (like lien to some sort of broadcasting TCP stream) I want to use ServiceHost for somehow simplyfiing proces of creating my TCP sender\listener, to somehow control namespaces (so I would be able to let my clients to send TCP streams directly into my service using some nice URLs like www.example.com:34123/myserver/stream?id=1 or www.example.com:34123/myserver/stream?id=222 and so that I will not be bothered with Idea of 1 client for 1 socket at one time moment, BTW I realy want to keep my WCF services on the same port as my own server or what it is...) Can any body please help me with this?

• What to know - for building a form with PHP and MySQL

  Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described? • apache mod_rewrite redirection problem

  ok i am having a problem with redirection on apache, i have a domain configured on my hosting account but the domain needs to be redirected to a folder. eg: / is root of server where the mysite.com answers /mysite is where the files are so i got this htaccess code to do the job: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?mysite.com$ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/mysite/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /mysite/$1 RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?mysite.com$ RewriteRule ^(/)?$ mysite/index.php [L] plus i made an index.php to redirect to mysite folder. everything seems to be working good the only problem is i added a forum on /mysite/forums/ and for some reason instead of getting mysite.com/forums/ in the browser im getting mysite.com/mysite/forums/ could anyone help me solve this problem?   So, I'm trying to send an smtp email from my website as a confirmation that their order has been place. The site is hosted on godaddy and I have no idea what's going on. I'm getting all kinds of error messages. The current one is: "System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Mailbox name not allowed. The server response was: sorry, your mail was administratively denied. (#5.7.1)" My code is: string body = "Your order was placed"; MailMessage objEmail1 = new MailMessage("[email protected]", userEmail, "Confirmation Email", body); objEmail1.IsBodyHtml = true; SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient(); client.Host = "relay-hosting.secureserver.net"; client.UseDefaultCredentials = false; client.Send(objEmail1); I think the problem lies in the from address not belonging to godaddy or with the client.Host. Ideas?

• Invisible .htaccess Redirect from /public_html/ to /public_html/folder

  I need to point the root domain of my hosting account to a subdirectory (joomla). I want this to be invisible (i.e. browser address bar doesn't change). Also, I need this to work when a user hits the root or a subfile/subfolder. I've tried the following rules, which work individually, but I can't get them to work together. This one works when no subfile/subfolder is specified: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^$ /joomla/ [L] And this one works when a subfile/subfolder IS specified: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule (.+)$ /joomla/$1 [L] I just can't figure out how to combine them.

• PHP exec() and system() functions always return false in IIS

  Hi there, I'm trying to use the PHP exec() or system() (or any other similar function) to run a batch file, but I can't seem to get these to return anything. The simplest example I've seen is this, which outputs nothing: <?php echo system('dir'); ?> The script is running on a windows XP machine on IIS with PHP installed and I've also tried it on my shared hosting account running windows 2003 server/IIS. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get this working, or provide any commands I can use for troubleshooting? Cheers, Tom

• How can I tackle 'profoundly found elsewhere' syndrome (inverse of NIH)?

  How can I encourage colleagues to embrace small-scale innovation within our team(s), in order to get things done quicker and to encourage skills development? (the term 'profoundly found elsewhere' comes from Wikipedia, although it is scarcely used anywhere else apart from a reference to Proctor & Gamble) I've worked in both environments where there is a strong opposition to software which hasn't been developed in-house (usually because there's a large community of developers), and more recently (with far fewer central developers) where off-the-shelf products are far more favoured for the usual reasons: maintenance, total cost over product lifecycle, risk management and so on. I think the off the shelf argument works in the majority of cases for the majority of users, even though as a developer the product never quite does what I'd like it to do. However, in some cases there are clear gaps where the market isn't able to provide specifically what we would need, or at least it isn't able to without charging astronomical consultancy rates for a bespoke solution. These can be small web applications which provide a short-term solution to a particular need in one specific department, or could be larger developments that have the potential to serve a wider audience, both across the organisation and into external markets. The problem is that while development of these applications would be incredibly cheap in terms of developer hours, and delivered very quickly without the need for glacial consultation, the proposal usually falls flat because of risk: 'Who'll maintain the project tracker that hasn't had any maintenance for the past 7 years while you're on holiday for 2 weeks?' 'What if one of our systems changes and the connector breaks?' 'How can you guarantee it's secure/better/faster/cheaper/holier than Company X's?' With one developer behind these little projects, the answers are invariably: 'Nobody, but...' 'It will break, just like any other application would...' 'I, uh...' How can I better answer these questions and encourage people to take a little risk in order to stimulate creativity and fast-paced, short-lifecycle development instead of using that 6 months to consult about what tender process we might use?

• ASP.Net: Scheduled tasks in a shared environment.

  This is really an extension of this question, which asked the best way to schedule tasks which need to be performed periodically within ASP.NET in a normal environment. However, I would like to ask this specifically for a Shared Hosting Environment (most of the answers to the previous question would not work in a shared environment as far as I know). One obvious solution would be to have a page which is responsible to performing the tasks on the hosted machine, and call this page from another machine (that you have full control over) using e.g. a windows scheduled task. This is a bit nasty though - are there any better approaches?

• mod-rewrite to ignore the subdomain

  I'm using a mod-rewrite for pretty URLs, meant to run on the domain root. Working fine but now I'm trying to make it run on a subdomain and it keeps giving "500 Internal Server Error". The subdomain automatically redirects to the folder with that name on my hosting account (sub.domain.com shows the content of domain.com/sub/). Does it fail because this request is already being mod-rewritten automatically or can I simply change something in the htaccess to address the subdomain instead? • Can a war file be deployed on any server?

  Please pardon me if this question is silly. Suppose I develop a j2ee web application using srping framework and a MS SQL Server database, using a Webspphere application server. I later create a war file for this application. Can I deploy this war file on a tomcat server without any change in code? Or my question is can this be hosted by web hosting which provides only Tomcat servers? If yes, is there any change in code required? If it cannot be deployed, can you please suggest me what to do, because I havent developed any application on a tomcat server. All the applications that I have developed have been on Websphere App Server using RAD.

• Continuously checking database from a Windows service

  I am making a Windows service which needs to continuously check for database entries that can be added at any time to tell it to execute some code. It is looking to see if it's status is set to pending, and it's execute time entry is than the current time. Is the only way to do this to just run select statements over and over? It might need to execute the code every minute which means I need to run the select statement every minute looking for entries in the database. I'm trying to avoid unneccesary cpu time because I'm probably going to end up paying for cpu cycles on the hosting provider

• ISO/IEC Website and Charging for C and C++ Standards

  The ISO C Standard (ISO/IEC 9899) and the ISO C++ Standard (ISO/IEC 14882) are not published online; instead, one must purchase the PDF for each of those standards. I am wondering what the rationale is behind this... is it not detrimental to both the C and C++ programming languages that the authoritative specification for these languages is not made freely available and searchable online? Doesn't this encourage the use of possibly inaccurate, non-authoritative sources for information regarding these standards? While I understand that much time and effort has gone into developing the C and C++ standards, I am still somewhat puzzled by the choice to charge for the specification. The OpenGroup Base Specification, for example, is available for free online; they make money buy charging for certification. Does anyone know why the ISO standards committees don't make their revenue in certifying standards compliance, instead of charging for these documents? Also, does anyone know if the ISO standards committee's atrociously looking website is intentionally made to look that way? It's as if they don't want people visiting and buying the spec. One last thing... the C and C++ standards are generally described as "open standards"... while I realize that this means that anyone is permitted to implement the standard, should that definition of "open" be revised? Charging for the standard rather than making it openly available seems contrary to the spirit of openness. P.S. I do have a copy of the ISO/IEC 9899:1999 and ISO/IEC 14882:2003, so please no remarks about being cheap or anything... although if you are tempted to say such things, you might want to consider the high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who might not have all that much extra cash. Also, you might want to consider the fact that the ISO website is really sketchy and they don't even tell you the cost until you proceed to the checkout... doesn't really encourage one to go and get a copy, now does it?

  Hello, it's the first time I developp such tool you all know (the possibility to compare articles according to price and/or options) Since I never did that i want to tell me what do you think of the way i see that : On the database we would have : offer / price / option 1 / option 2 / option 3 / IDseller / IDoffer best buy / 15$ / full FTP / web hosting / php.ini / 10 / 1 .../..../.... And the request made by the client : "SELECT * FROM offers WHERE price <= 20 AND option1 = fullFTP"; I don't know if it seems OK to you. Plus i was wondering, how to avoid multiples entries for the same seller. Imagine you have multiple offers with a price <= 20 with the option FullFTP for the same seller, i don't want him to be shown 5 times on the comparator. If you have any advices ;) Thanks

• calling a method on the parent page from a user control

  I am using a user control that I created (just a .cs file not an .ascx file), that does some magic and depending on a value generated by the control, I need it to do something on the parent page that is 'hosting' the control. It needs to call a method under certain circumstances (method is on the parent control). the control is placed on the parent page like so: <customtag:MyControl ID="something" runat="server" /> I'm dynamically creating buttons etc on the control itself but when a button is clicked, let's say for example that there's a text box on the control and if the value of the textbox is "bob" it needs to call a method on the page that's housing the control...how can I accomplish this?

• Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the preferred method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. <bean id="c" class="com.domain.TestController"> <constructor-arg ref="service" /> </bean> <bean id="service" class="com.domain.Service" /> My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• How do I write my own desktop sharing application in java ?

  Hello I want write my own desktop sharing application in Java. The application should have some very default features: Capture screen; Allow a remote connected user to click / edit fields. I was thinking to use Java Robot class for mouse movements / key pressing. The problem is i don't know what screen capture strategy to use. Should I make sequentially screen captures (on the hosting computer) every second, and send those captures with UDP via network, so that the clients can intercept the data-grams ? Isn't this a little overkill for the network ? What other strategies are available ? (Except trying an already existing app). PS: If necessary I can even write native code using JNI (still that's the last thing I planning to do).

On the official documentations it is stated that Note that services, like other application objects, run in the main thread of their hosting process and AsyncTask only works if it is executed in the UIThread. So is it possible to use AsyncTask in a Service class?
